Many restaurants, in particular the great chain restaurant company, McDonald's, specialize in "fast food蔦food which is served at the counter ready H to go”,or H to take out n. The food, cooked and hot, is packed into cardboard and plastic containers, and hot drinks go into plastic cups with tight-fitting lids. But they do not really know what they are talking about because they rarely get a chance to eat it. Most of the restaurants in large towns have foreign owners and serve foreign food・When visitors are invited to eat in an English home, their hosts often feel they must offer them something foreign and exotic. Those of us who do know English food are aware that at its best it can be really very good. On the other hand it is true to say that sometimes it is terrible. Part of the problem is that we are not really interested in food 一we eat to live; we do not live to eat. So we don't generally spend the necessary time and effort needed to cook really good meals. We prefer food that is simple and easy to cook, or ready prepared food which only needs heating up before eating. You can find the best English food in the country away from the large towns, where life is slower and people are not in such a hurry. But, of course, most visitors come to London. They come because they are interested in shopping and sightseeing. They do not come because of food, so why should they complain about it?Listening IV1.CDE2.Television / Meat and potatoes / Sugar-filled biscuits, cakes and chips / Becausechemicals make the hamburgers look good. / One can remain healthy withoutmeat.Script:All right! I wish there were more characters like old Popeye the sailor, who ate spinach and not chips. Just because I like brown rice, beans, and fresh vegetables, I don*t expect my children to eat this "health food11. Fm glad to cook traditional meals of meat and potatoes for them. I really can't be too upset with the kids because most adults aren't careful about what they eat. The other night, my wife and I went to a party where there was plenty to drink but very little for us to eat. They served hot dogs and hamburgers. I can't eat hotdogs, with all those preservatives, and hamburgers are filled with chemicals so that they look good. Besides the meat, they had sugar-filled biscuits and cake, and, of course, chips. Terrible! I don't want the world to change because of me, but I think that people should realize that there are alternatives to eating meat. Every term students are given the opportunity to evaluate their teachers. They are supposed to judge their teachers’ lectures, interests in students’problems, methods of exercise, and general ability to conducta class. Then, when the teacher has left the classroom, theymust write their evaluation o the forms provided. They are not supposed to exchange views or discuss their responses. After everyone has completed the forms, one student collects and puts them in envelopes. It is very difficult to evaluate another person’s performance fairly. For example, Santa recently wroteirresponsible remarks about her teacher because she was failing the course. Her friend Sam wrote a marvelous description of the same teacher because he was receiving an A in the course. Both Santa and Sam were not fairly evaluating the teacher. They were influence by the grades they were earning and were unfair in their judgments.Another irresponsible form of evaluation occurred when James rated his teacher excellent because the teacher is“easy”. He gives few tests and only assigns (分配) one paper during the entire term. His lectures are often filled with jokes and endless stories about his family. On the other hand, Jamesrated Professor Jones poor because he assigns homework daily, gives pretest previews and post-test reviews, and packs his lectures with information.Santa, Sam, and James have not thought about their teachers’ teaching abilities. They have w ritten unfair evaluations and have not given thought to their evaluations. They had neither planned to buy a house of their own nor planned to buy lots of furniture. They were going to rent a house either with furniture or they would buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new way that more and more people were using in settling down in new places. The renting of home furnishings-beds, tables, dishes, and so on, has become one of the fastest growing businesses in the United States. What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? Many kinds ofpeople do: international business people, government officials, airline (航空公司) workers, young married couples - people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city (or country) to another. They are saved the trouble and cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they won't like any more within a short time. They prefer to wait untilthey have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find that they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy.One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. But they don't like to tell people about it. The idea of renting home furnishings is still quite new, and they are not sure what their neighbors might think.6.The text is mainly about why some people rent their furniture.A.TB.F答案:A7.According to the text, home furnishings may include beds, tables, dishes and so on.A.TB.F答案:A8.People who have to move frequently rent home furnishings.A.TB.F答案:A9.One reason that people rent home furnishings is that they like new furniture.A.TB.F答案:B10.To the family who have a large, beautiful home of their own, renting furniture is not a wise thing to do.A.TB.F答案:BIn the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.11.What is the main idea of this passage? ________A.It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B.The role of time in social life over the world.C.If people are late, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the U.S.D.Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.答案:B12.What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? _______A.A matter of work.B.A matter of life or death.C.You want to see him or her.D.You want to make an appointment with him or her.答案:B13.Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend in the U.S. A.?A.at 7:00 amB.at 4:00 pmC.at the midnightD.at 4 am答案:B14.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ________A.In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date.B.No misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures about the concept of time.C.It may be considered foolish to make an appointment well in advance in the U.S.A..D.Promptness is valued highly in American life.答案:D15.From the passage we can safely infer that _______A.it’s a matter of lif e or death if you call someone in day time.B.the meaning of time differs in different parts of the world.C.it makes no difference in the U.S. whether you are early or late for a business party.D.if a person is late for a date, he needn’t make some explanation.答案:B三、词汇与语法16.How often do you _________your brother?A.hear aboutB.hear ofC.hear toD.hear from答案:D17.Small arms _______ often carried by the soldiers.A.areB.hasC.wasD.have答案:A18.______ he was tired he went on working.A.EvenB.YetC.AlthoughD.In spite答案:C19.________ you are leaving tomorrow, we can have dinner together tonight.A.SinceB.WhileC.ForD.Before答案:A20.His salary as a driver is much higher than ________.A.a porterB.is a porterC.as a porterD.that of a porter答案:D四、完型填空The world is not only hungry; it is also thirsty for water.
