AMy mother and her best friend Martha were in their mid-80s when they saw each other for the last time. They had been friends since they were 18, both of them students atWesleyanCollegeinMacon,Georgia. My mother was the dreamy one, who loved to read and dream herself as an actress. Martha, however, was more practical. I’m not sure what they had in common except that they trusted each other, helped each other, and stayed in touch even when life separated them.Martha spent most of her adulthood inAtlanta, where she raised three kids. My mother, meanwhile, raised eight children, and moved many times during her financially and emotionally troubled marriage, which included several months living with her family inseedymotels.I sensed my mother hid her troubles from most people, but not from Martha, and I knew from my mother that Martha carried her own sorrows. Their willingness to share sorrow without judgment was part of what bond them. The best friendships can also withstand (抵挡) periods without communication. They didn’t communicate a lot — this was before the ease of emails and texts and yet I knew they were always in each other’s minds. One day in 2008, 1 drove my mother to Martha’s house for their final visit. The moment my mother hobbled (蹒跚) into Martha’s house, they threw their arms around each other and went to sit out in the garden, laughing until they were dizzy. I snapped a photo, and spotted something joyous, young and free on my mom, which existed only in the presence of her best friend. Two years later, my mother died. Of all the people I had to tell, Martha was the hardest because I felt it erased her past. After that, we lost touch. But I still think of her and how that friendship strengthened my mother.1. What does the underlined word “seedy” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. largeB. dirtyC. urbanD. bright2. The author’s mother and Martha had a lasting friendship partly because they________.A. were willing to shareB. were constantly in touchC. had much in commonD. had a likeness in personality3. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A. To tell the importance of friendship.B. To express his gratitude to his mother.C. To share his standard of choosing a friend.D. To praise the friendship between Martha and his mother.BCigarettes aren’t just harmful when they’re being smoked. Even when cigarette ends go out and are cold, new research has found they continue to give off harmful chemicals in the air. In the first 24 hours alone, scientists say a used cigarette end will produce 14 percent of the nicotine (尼古丁) that an actively burning cigarette would produce. While most of these chemicals are released within a day of being put out,an analysis for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the level of nicotine fell by just 50% five days later.“I was ly surprised,” since environmental engineer Dustin Poppendieck from the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). “The numbers are significant and could have important impacts when cigarette ends are dealt with indoors or in cars. While much attention has been paid to the health influence of first-hand, second-hand and now third-hand smoking, it is not the case when it comes to the actual cigarette end of the matter.”To measure emissions (排放) from this forgotten thing, Poppendieck and his team placed 2,100 cigarettes that were recently put out inside a special room. Once the ends weresealed away, the team measured eight chemicals commonly produced by cigarettes, four of which the FDA have their eye on for being harmful or potentially so.After setting the room’s temperature, the researchers tested how emissions changed under certain conditions. When the air temperature of the room was higher, for instance, they noticed the ends produced these chemicals at higher rates. This finding might discourage those who want to leave ashtrays (烟灰缸) out for days ata time, especially in the heat.4. What do the researchers say about cigarette ends?A They contain little nicotine.B. They produce no nicotine five days later.C. They give off nicotine for days.D. They create as much nicotine as burning cigarettes.5. What do Poppendieck’s words suggest?A. First-hand smoking does most harm.B. The findings are within his expectation.C. Cigarettes should be dealt with indoors.D. Health influence of cigarette ends is ignored.6. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to not cleaning ashtrays for days?A. Unclear.B. Disapproving.C. Unconcerned.D. Puzzled.7. What can be the best title for the text?A. Used Cigarette Ends Release Harmful ChemicalsB. Cigarettes Are More Harmful While Being SmokedC. Research Found Reasons For Cigarette Ends’ HarmD. Cigarette Ends Produce More Chemicals in the HeatCJack was born without eyes. He was very lucky as he grew up having other kittens (young cats) to socialize (交往)with, and was used to people from the moment he was born. However, when it came time to find the kittens homes, no one knew where Jack would end up.That’s when I got an e-mail from my friend. All she asked was “Do you still want one of the kittens? There’s one here with no eyes and no one would like to take him”. Without thinking I told her that I did want the kitten. When we first brought him home, Jack stayed mostly in my room. After about a day he had noissues running around and climbing on everything. At times he gets lost in the house, he’ll stop. But we just call his name and talk to him and it isn’t long before he finds his way back to us.A few weeks after getting Jack, we got a new cat named Bear. Jack and Bear have become best friends. It doesn’t matter that he can’t see. He always knows when Bear is around. He’ll run across the yard straight to Bear and wrap his front legs around his neck in a big hug. They run after each other around and wrestle (摔跤). They’ll lie down in the grass together when tired.Jack is truly an inspiration. I’ve owned lots of kittens in my life, but Jack is the happiest and most playful. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself. He doesn’t need pity. I think Jean, owner of Gumbo, another eyeless cat, said it best when she told me that cats don’t have disabilities; they have adaptability.8. Why did Jack come to the author’s home?A. The author cared for an eyeless cat.B. The author didn’t mind whether he was blind.C. No other young cats kept him company.D. The author’s friend begged the author to take him home.9. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Jack often wrestles with Bear indoors.B. Jack likes to play with a new eyeless cat.C. Jack quickly adapts to the new environment.D. Jack is good at talking and playing with people.10. What does the underlined word “issue” in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Trouble.B. Fun.C. Luck.D. Business.11. What does the passage mainly tell us?A. A cat has nine lives.B. All is well that ends well.C. God helps those who help themselves.D. A good beginning makes a good ending.DThe Nez Perce Indians are a tribe that lived in the Pacific Northwest of theUnited States. At the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition (探险队) , which was one of the first journeys by Americans from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast and back again, the Nez Perce territory (领土) covered about 17 million acres, covering parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Butthat was a brief sweet history. In September 1805, when Lewis and Clark came off theRockieson their westward journey, the entire exploring party was hungry and ill -- too weak to defend themselves.Had the Nez Perce chosen to attack them, they could have put an end to the Lewis and Clark expedition there on the banks ofClearwater River. Instead the Nez Perce welcomed the white Americans and looked after them until they made a full recovery. Thus began a long friendship between the Nez Perce and white Americans. But white men’s greed for land and gold finally broke the friendship. In 1855 Governor Isaac Stevens ofWashingtonTerritoryinvited the Nez Perce to a peace conference. He said there were a great many white people in the country, and many more would come. But the Chief of the tribe at that time, Old Joseph, replied, “Take away your paper. I will not touch it with my hand.”Things were quiet for a while after that, but not for long. When Old Joseph died, the chiefship was passed onto Young Joseph. In the late 1870s, government officials came to order the Nez Perce to leave theWallowaValleyand then began hard battles between the Nez Perce and the white soldiers. After the tribe had fought thirteen battles and moved 1,600 miles to-wards Canada in an attempt to retreat(撤退) north, YoungJoseph, gave in to the United States Army. Here was his famous statement, “Hear me my chiefs. I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever.”In 1885, Chief Joseph was sent along with manyof his band to the Colville Reservation inWashingtonwhere Joseph continued to lead his band for another 25 years, at times coming into conflict with the leaders of 11 other tribes living on the reservation.(保留地,居留地)12. My friends regard me as a goody-goody; my parents say I am conservative and modest when it comes to clothes. None of my skirts or shorts end above my knees. So why, why did I feel so invited? My family and I were in Target, and there it was, waiting. A skirt, specifically designed not to cover anything. It looked like something that one of those modern schoolgirls would wear.I checked my purse. The skirt cost $10. I had the money. I could buy it. I imagined walking into school and my friends’ jaws (下巴) dropping. Guys would ask me out, and I would be happy. I could buy it, no, — I should buy it.I showed my mother. She was surprised but said it was my decision. My sister looked on enviously.I went into the dressing room to try it on. So sure was I that this skirt would change me, somehow make me not what I am but what I wished to be. I slid my jeans off and put it on. I looked in the mirror. There I was — a terrible girl in a Superman T-shirt and sneakers. My glasses fogged up as I started to cry.The skirt did not change me. Though it fit well and might make me look good in the eyes of today’s world, it was not me. I am not a girl who wears cool clothes to fit in.I took the thing off and slid back into the comfort of modesty. My mom knocked on the door. “Emily, are you okay?”I wiped away my tears. “I’m fine.” I looked in the mirror again and saw a slim girl with funny glasses. I saw myself.【1】In the author’s eyes the skirt that interested her was ______.A.not modern B.very shortC.too expensive D.poorly designed【2】The author thought if she went to school in this skirt her schoolmates would be ______.A.shocked B.hurt C.confused D.happier【3】The underlined sentence in the 3rd paragraph indicates the author ______.A.hesitated about buying the skirtB.made up her mind to buy the skirtC.was able to afford to buy the skirtD.worried about others’ opinion on the skirt【4】The author cried because ______.A.she found that she looked ugly in the skirtB.she was aware the skirt didn’t fit her wellC.she realized it’s a wrong decision to make a changeD.she was disappointed the skirt failed to change her3.Travel can be a lifesaver. But in today’s economy (经济) with airlines adding new fees almost daily and ticket prices sharply on the rise, many have written off travel as too expensive. However, with a few saving tricks and a little research, there are still lots of great deals to be had on airline tickets and more.Early Bird Gets the Deal.Travel experts say that there are certain times of day when more deals are available. Airfares can change three times a day as airlines adjust their prices to fill up flights. Early morning is when the fares tend to be lowest. What Wouldn’t a Business Traveler do?Flying when business travelers don’t can save you big money. Most business travelers fly on Mondays and Fridays, so Tuesday and Wednesday are the best days. Airlines will usually lower their prices on these days to aggressively try and fill empty seats.Fly to popular places at unpopular times. The slowest time of the year for travel is in the Fall between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Again, to try and fill more empty seats, the airlines will lower prices and offer better deals to get people to fly during this time of the year.Package DealsMany times the best deals on airfare can be found as part of a package rate. Most travel sites have package rates available. Often, the entire package (hotel, airfare, rental car) is cheaper than just the plane ticket on another site. Even if you don’t need the rental car, with the money you’ve saved on the flight, you can afford to take a taxi. These deals are especially good on last minute bookings. With a little inside knowledge and some good timing, you can get yourself a steal on a ticket to the vacation you thought was out of reach.【1】Which would be the best title for the text?A.Tips on Vocation TravellingB.Advice for Business TravelersC.The Effect of Economy on AirlinesD.Tricks of Finding the Cheapest Flights【2】Many people have to cancel their travel plan because they _____.A.have no saving tricks B.consider economic reasonsC.seldom do research D.can’t have great deals【3】Which of the following can be filled in the blank in the text?A.Fly to popular places.B.Don’t Miss the Holydays.C.Better Avoid the Crowds.D.Lose No Chance for Travelling.【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.Saving tricks can make the seemingly impossible vacation possible.B.Inside knowledge and good timing help you to steal tickets from airlines.C.Vacation will be out of reach without inside knowledge and good timing.D.Who thinks the vacation is out of reach never grasps the tricks of saving.4.Not many people can say that they have lived in two totally different environments, and technically neither can I.I have lived in the same house in the same Connecticut town my whole life, but a lot of my childhood and teenage years have been spent visiting my family in New York City.Wethersfield is a typical New England town, a small close community (社区) where almost everyone knows your name. My friends all go t o the same high school and my parents are friendly with my friends’ parents. Most of my friends don’t realize what life is like outside this little town. Maybe every so often a few take a day trip to Manhattan or Boston, but none really knows what it’s lik e to live in an urban environment. My parents are both from New York City and since they have siblings and friends who still live there, we visit a lot. From an early age I have been exposed to urban life. Jeff, one of my cousins, lives with his mother in a one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. He has never had his own room and has always been very much on his own. I don’t think any of my friends could understand how someone could live like that. When I go to the city I see things I would never see in my hometown. I see poverty and people struggling to make a living. I observe a whole different pace; there, you’re just one guy living with millions of others who will never know your name.I feel blessed to have experienced the lifestyles of two completely different places. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had. I feel that living in Wethersfield has given me a solid base in forming my character and the ability to deal in a close-knit society. On the other hand, my time spent in New York has exposed me to diverse cultural experiences. I feel that I would be comfortable in any environment and could make the best of any situation.【1】According to the author, most of his friends in the town _____.A.have never experienced city lifeB.can only understand the rural lifeC.prefer the small close communityD.know little about the real city life【2】The underlined word “siblings” in paragraph 3 means _____.A.schoolmates B.colleagues C.relatives D.parents【3】The author’s life in New York has brought him _____.A.his present character B.the social abilityC.the comfort of city life D.diverse cultural experiences【4】What could be the best title for the passage?A.A Small Town and a Big CityB.A Man of Two Different WorldsC.Experience Various EnvironmentsD.Make the Best of Diverse Cultures5.U.S. Bottled Water Sales Are Booming Again Despite OppositionDespite organized anti-bottled-water campaigns across the country and a noisy debate a bout bottled water’s environmental impact, Americans are buying more bottled water than ever. Why do so many people seem to think they should have any input on what other American’s choose to buy or do? If they want to buy bottled water, let them.If they want to eat fast food, let them.If they want to smoke pot, let them.— BarackalypsePeople just get tired of paying for others’ bad behavior. If many people eat excessive fast food, you pay higher insurance premiums. If many people frequently buy bottled water, your trash bills go up and landfills fill up quickly. It’s about personal responsibility, which really should be a cornerstone of libertarianism.— BdbrSo? This is the price you pay to live in a free society. You want to control the life of another just so you can save a few bucks? What would you say when someone do the same to you?— Norman619Defend selfish pricks all you like; I’m just glad there are still people who still believe personal responsibility is a good and decent thing. We make your life cheaper and less bothersome.— YoyoWhat a waste of money! It’s fine when you’re on the road and you need a cold drink, but people who buy cases of bottled water for home are completely crazy.— AgmlauncherI wish we all can find a way to improve things and benefit from this. The environment needs a lot of help but businesses will always work on what people would need and demand. Is this part of the balance? Hope we can find better ways.— Skipweis【1】What can we know about bottled water in America?A.Americans are consuming more bottled water than tap.B.US bottled water sales have increased for the first time.C.Activists in several regions have been fighting against it.D.Some people worry about its bad effect on the environment.【2】Who would agree with Barackalypse on this matter?A.Bdbr.B.Norman619.C.Yoyo.D.Agmlauncher.【3】According to the text, Agmlauncher is _____ bottled water.A.partly supportive of B.extremely againstC.strongly in favor of D.not concerned about【4】Which of the following statements goes with Skipweis’ opinion?A.The environment is emphasized too much.B.It’s impossible for people to find a better way.C.Business is not totally responsible for the problem.D.At present we can’t benefit from bottled water at all.6.The structure and workings of the university are ever changing. The university of the past is not like the university of the present and the university of the present will not be like the university of the future. This “adaptation” to the times is what can make some universities great or make some universities among the worst in the nation. In the past the university was very set in their ways. They did things the way they wanted them done. They paid no attention to the rest of the society and the way the ones paying the bills wanted them done. In the past the professors would lecture endlessly to the students, which often left the students bored and with no idea what was really said to them in the lecture. This is no way to try and teach students; students need interaction with the professors that are paid to teach them. As Paulo Freire believed there needs to be communication between the students and the professors and the class should not be totally memorization. This is the way that things were done in the past.In the present many universities have either changed or are changing the way that they run their universities. The universities now are taking on many of the modern educational beliefs in order to make changes in the teaching methods. Universities are breaking down many of the divides between majors that they offer. By breaking these barriers the universities are becoming less specialized and more diverse. This goes along with the ideas of Berry who believes that the schools are over-specialized and that the universities are now just machines that are merely meant to produce workers. In the past few years the colleges have been lowering the standards of admission, which in turn lowers the standards of all the schools below the college level. The universities are now on the right track by increasing the standards of admission into their colleges.【1】In the author’s view, what can decide a university’s quality?A.What its structure is like.B.How its workings are run.C.What times it belongs to.D.Whether it’ll adjust itself.【2】Which of the following is NOT a feature of universities in the past?A.They were run in a fixed way.B.They ignored the needs of society.C.They had lower standards of admission.D.Professors lacked interaction with students.【3】What is the author’s main attitude towards universities in the present?A.Positive.B.Doubtful.C.Passive.D.Uncertain.【4】What would the author most probably focus on in the following part of this passage?A.Universities in the future.B.The standards of schools.C.The admission into some colleges.D.Other changes of teaching methods.四、书面表达1.请结合图片内容,按要求用英语写作。

He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace, and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet his schedule.A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the money box without stopping, and continued to walk.A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work. The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.This is a real story. Joshua Bell’s playing in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment. The outlines were: in a common environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we enjoy beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected situation? One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?”【1】Few people stopped to listen to Joshua Bell playing because______.A.people were in a hurryB.they were not interested in musicC.it was too cold in the subwayD.the performance was not good enough【2】When children stopped to look at the violinist, their parents ______.A.would give him some moneyB.would stop to enjoy the musicC.would applaud for the performanceD.would urge them to continue walking【3】Joshua Bell played in the metro station in order to ______.A.make more moneyB.practice his skills in playing musicC.made an advertisement for his concertD.find out people’s reaction under such a circumstance【4】The purpose of the passage is to _____.A.set us to think about our lifeB.show us how to play musicC.tell us the importance of musicD.report a subway performance2.A smart phone is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced computing abilities than a common phone. The first smart phones enabled the users to send and receive emails. Later models added the function of portable media players, pocket video cameras, and GPS navigation units to form one multi-use device. Many modem smart phones also include touchscreens and web browsers that display web pages.A recent report says we spend an average of two hours and 40 minutes each day looking at a smart phone. That doesn’t mean making calls, but playing phone games and browsing the Web.Nowadays we always find people checking emails in a restaurant, taking a picture of the food when it arrives, or checking a message during a c onversation instead of traditional communication. It’s no secret that our lives are being affected by our smart phones obsession. However, this phenomenon has never been presented so vividly as in the short YouTube film I Forgot My Phone. Despite only being online for a few days, it's already been viewed more than 10.5 million times. Whether it will be screened in the cinema remains to be seen.Ironically, YouTube’s data show that the site gets a billion views per day from mobile devices, so a lot of those people watched it on their phones. The short film, written by and starring actress Charlene Deguzman, shows groups of people in various social situations, the majority of whom are absorbed in their phones instead of the world around them. To a certain extent, we all do it.【1】People prefer a smart phone to a common one, because the latter only can help us ______.A.check emails B.send messages C.find the destination D.watch a video【2】The underlined word “obsession” in the third paragraph most probably means “______”.A.devotion B.contribution C.addiction D.emotion【3】Which of the following is right?A.People spend as average of two hours and 40 minutes each day using smart phones.B.The film hasn’t been put on in the cinema.C.The film is written by an actor named Charlene Deguzman.D.The film has already been viewed more than 105 million times in the first few days.【4】When the writer mentions the number of people watching the film from mobile devices in the fifth paragraph, he mainly feels ______.A.encouraged B.depressed C.proud D.satisfied3.Kids undergo a large amount of pressure and stress during their school exams, which can often become quite overwhelming (to much) for them. It may be the first experience of stress, at this level, they have ever experienced and therefore quite frightening. Yes, you may say that it's all a part of growing up and therefore good lessons for them to learn, and to an extent I agree with you. However, it’s important to learn how to prepare for life’s challenges so that they aren’t overwhelming or scary and so that we are able to manage them the best we can. Here are some tips you can use during your kids exam time.Break their revision plan down into small parts. Doing this will help transform what once seemed like a huge impossible task into a more manageable one.Help them arrange properly so that the subjects they like the least (perhaps ones that require more time and effort) are worked on first; once they are out of the way, it will help reduce the worry.Plan week on week to make sure they are on track. Ticking items of a list each week will help them to feel good about themselves and their progress.Create rewards for all the ticks - a favourite TV programme, a delicious snack, an hour’s surfing the Internet, computer games or whatever it was that they enjoy the most. This will encourage them to carry on and make them feel good.Think of strategies on how to deal with exams calmly so their anxieties don't get the better of them.Talk about times in their lives when they had been successful at something and look at the qualities they used to get them there - determination, persistence, hard work, patience, positivity, dedication - discuss how they can apply these skills to their exams.Acknowledge that if they do their best that is good enough.Ensure they realize that this period in their lives will pass and that exams are only a temporary time in their lives; nothing can and does last forever.Ensure they keep their eye on the prize: enjoying their long summer holiday when the exams are finished; giving them something to look forward to will help to motivate them and provide a positive end in sight.【1】According to paragraph 1, it’s important to learn how to prepare for exams because___.A.it is a part of growing up.B.It is the first experience of stressC.it helps kid release stress and do better.D.it is important to get a good mark in exams.【2】Which subjects should be worked on first?A.Their best ones.B.Their favourite ones.C.the easiest ones D.the most difficult ones【3】According to the passage, which of the following is true?A.Kid should become aware of the importance of exams.B.Kids should learn to deal with exam pressure independently.C.Parents should keep their kids away from entertainment.D.Parents should care about the psychological development of children.4.Being honest are fundamental requirements if you want to grow spiritually and follow your true destination of personal development. It's not simply about being honest with people. While that will make you a better person and a more accepted one it's more importantly about being honest with yourself.Living your life honestly means that you've decided to live openly and to show your true self to others and that you can be relied upon to be trustworthy. On the other hand, dishonesty is all about shade and concealment and living your life in 'dark corners'. When you're dishonest, it means that you remain living in the dark and cannot grow spiritually.Honesty produces trust-trust in ourselves and in all those around us. Trust in turn produces confidence which we all need to overcome life's problems and which also encourages us to take risks in order to achieve our goals. You'll have no doubt you have heard expressions such as "what goes around, comes around" and "you get back, what you give out in life" and that's very true. If you don't live your lives honestly, you can be assured that the people you'll attract will turn out to be very similar to you and it's therefore unavoidable that one day you'11 be on the receiving end of someone's dishonest actions or words. There may be situations where telling the whole truth causes you to bring a lot of pain on somebody else. For example, John may have told Paul that he can't go on a weekend fishing trip with him because he has a family commitment arranged that weekend. You know differently and that the real reason John isn't going is because he hates Paul. When Paul asks you if you know whether the reason is true, what do you say? Well, in situations like this, it's often better to be economical with the truth. You might say that you don't know why John can't go or that you think he has something on that weekend." Of course, this isn't telling the complete truth but you are sparing Paul's feelings on something that won't, after all, have strong influence on Paul's future.【1】If you want to grow spiritually, it is best for you to______.A.follow your destinationB.be true to yourselfC.plan your personal developmentD.accept honest people as ends【2】The passage tells us that if you choose to live a dishonest life, you will_____.A.suffer from dishonestyB.become very attractiveC.influence honest peopleD.have attractive friends【3】The example in the last paragraph is used to prove that______.A.we should always tell the truthB.John is not a trustworthy personC.telling lies causes pain on someone elseD.sometimes we can't be completely honest【4】What is the main idea of the passage?A.We should be economical with the truth.B.People can gain from dishonesty.C.Honesty helps you develop.D.Trust produces confidence.5.Most people know precious gemstones (宝石) by their appearances. An emerald flashes deep green, a ruby seems to hold a red fire inside, and a diamond shines li ke a star. It’s more difficult to tell where the gem was mined, since a diamond from Australia or Arkansas may appear the same to one from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, recently, a team of scientists has found a way to identify a gemstone’s origin.Beneath the surface of a gemstone, on the tiny level of atoms and molecules, lie clues to its origin. At this year’s meeting of the Geological Society of America in Minneapolis, Catherine McManus reported on a technique that uses lasers to clarif y these clues and identify a stone’s homeland. McManus directs scientific research at Materialytics, in Killeen, Texas. The company is developing the technique. “With enough data, we could identify which country, which mining place, even the individual min e a gemstone comes from,” McManus told Science News. Some gemstones, including many diamonds, come from war-torn countries. Sales of those “blood minerals” may encourage violent civil wars where innocent people are injured or killed. In an effort to reduce the trade in blood minerals, the U.S. government passed law in July 2010 that requires companies that sell gemstones to determine the origins of their stones. To figure out where gemstones come from, McManus and her team focus a powerful laser on a small sample of the gemstone. The technique is called laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Just as heat can turn ice into water or water into steam, energy from the laser changes the state of matter of the stone. The laser changes a miniscule part of the gemstone into plasma, a gas state of matter in which tiny particles called electrons separate from atoms. The plasma, which is superhot, produces a light pattern. (The science of analyzing this kind of light pattern is called spectroscopy.) Different elements produce different patterns, but McManus and her team say that gemstones from the same area produce similar patterns. Materialytics has already collected patterns from thousands of gemstones, including more than 200 from diamonds. They can compare the light pattern from an unknown gemstone to patterns they do know and look for a match. The light pattern acts like a signature, telling the researchers the origin of the gemstone. In a small test, the laser technique correctly identified the origins of 95 out of every 100 diamonds. For gemstones like emeralds and rubies, the technique proved successful for 98 out of every 100 stones. The scientists need to collect and analyze more samples, including those from war-torn countries, before the tool is ready for commercial use.Scientists like Barbara Dutrow, a mineralogist from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, find the technique exciting. “This is a basic new tool that could provide a better fingerprint of a material from a particular locality,”she told Science News.【1】We learn from Paragraph 1 that __________________.A.an emerald and a ruby are names of diamonds.B.it’s not difficult to tell where the gem was mined.C.appearances help to identify the origin of gemstones.D.diamonds from different places may appear the same.【2】Why did the U.S. government pass law that requires companies selling gemstones to determine theorigins of their stones?A.To look for more gemstones.B.To encourage violent civil wars.C.To reduce the trade in blood minerals.D.To develop the economy.【3】Which of the following facts most probably helps McManus and her team in identifying the origin of stones? A.Heat can turn ice into water or water into steam.B.Gemstones from the same area produce similar light patterns.C.Laser can changes a miniscule part of the gemstone into plasma.D.Materialytics has already collected patterns from thousands of gemstones.【4】From the last two paragraphs, what can be inferred about the laser technique?A.It is ready for commercial use.B.People can use the new tool to find more gemstones.C.It can significantly reduce the gemstones trade in blood minerals.D.It will bring about a revolutionary change in identifying the origin of minerals.【5】The author wrote this passage mainly to ________.A.tell us how to identify the origin of diamonds.B.introduce a laser technique in identifying a stone’s originC.prove identifying the origin of gemstones are difficultD.attract our attention to reducing trade in blood minerals四、书面表达1.请结合材料,按要求用英文写作,词数不少于60。
