AWhen Christopher Columbus landed on the then unamed Costa Rica in 1502, he saw many Indians wearing gold earrings. So he thought the land must be rich in gold. He named the place Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish.Though little gold was found, Costa Rica today is indeed rich with coffee and bananas. Coffee is the most important product in Costa Rica and most of it is exported (出口) to other countries like Ameri ca and West Germany. Bananas are the country’s second most important export.Costa Ricans also grow many other crops such as fruits, corn and beans for their own use. Costa Ricans love colors and their houses are painted in bright colors.Education is very important to the Costa Ricans. Almost every village has a school and education is a must for children between seven and fourteen years of age. Boys and girls go to separate (单独的) schools. Classes begin in March and end in November. The other three months of the year are harvest time and the children have to help their parents to pick coffee beans.21. From December to February, school children in Costa Rica ______.A. have lessons every dayB. have their examinationsC. help their parents pick coffee beansD. help their parents decorate their houses23. This passage is mainly about ______.A. Christopher ColumbusB. Costa RicaC. some products from Costa RicaD. the education of Costa RicaBChristian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (细菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate — refined white rice (精炼米). When he fedthem with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery — that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills.24. The underlined word “cure” in Paragragh 1 probably means ______.A. a medical treatmentB. a kind of vitaminC. a kind of germD. a kind of rice25. Christian Eijkman went to the island of Java to ______.A. spend his holidayB. find ways to grow better cropsC. do some research about the islandD. help the Javanese with their illness26. Why did Christian Eijkman raise some chickens?A. To eat them.B. To carry out his experiments.C. To give the Javanese a surprise.D. To make money by selling them.27. We can learn from the passage that ______.A. beri-beri was caused by chickensB. t he Javanese didn’t like vitaminsC. Christian Eijkman’s experiment was successfulD. the Javanese’s disease was caused by a kind of germCAmerica is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while —then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, expresstheir welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!28. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.29. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.A. warmly welcomed at the airportB. offered a ride to his homeC. treated hospitably at his homeD. treated to dinner in a restaurant30. The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______.A. strict with timeB. serious with timeC. careful with timeD. willing to spend time31. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.A. Friendships between ChineseB. Friendships between AmericansC. Americans’ hospitalityD. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendshipsDThe other day I heard a few local musicians talking:“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”“I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (责怪) others, and you play the role of victim (受害者), chances are you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, andsimply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard (标准) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.32. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?A. A friend in need is a friend indeedB. How to make friendship last for everC. You are who your friends areD. F riends are the most important in one’s success33. The underlined sentence “they’re rubbing off on you” in Paragraph 6 means ______.A. they’ll push you aheadB. they’ll influence youC. they’ll cover your shortcomingsD. they’ll help you achieve your goa l34. By taking the exercise mentioned in Paragraph 7, you can ______.A. improve a lot in making more friendsB. come to the right way of making friendsC. develop a better relationship with your friendsD. arrange the time with your friends properly35 ,The passage is mainly written for ______.A. musiciansB. managersC. negative peopleD. people wanting to succeed第二节:(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

AMom and Dad are two of the most important people in your life. You probably see at least one of them every day. If your dad worships(崇拜) the Pittsburgh Stealers, you’re lik ely to grow up being a big fan of that football team. And if your mom loves to read, you just might grow up carrying a book wherever you go, just like she does. Here are four ways you can stay close and build a strong relationship with your parents.(1)Spent time together. How much time do you spend just enjoying each other’s company?Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV, maybe you can ask your mom and dad to play with you. Go outside together, try a board game, or read a book out.(2)Share your feelings and ask for help. Your mom or dad might not know that you’re having a problem. Tell a parent if you’re sad or struggling with something.(3)Show your care. Some families are always kissing, hugging, and saying “I love you”. It’s important to show that you care for each other. And she asked why.One of the old men explained: “His name is Wealth,” pointing to one of his friends, “ and he is Success, and I am Love.” Then he added, “ Now go in and discusswith your husband which one of us you want in your home.”The woman went in and told her husband what had happened. Her husband was overjoyed. “How nice!” he said. “Since that is the case, let Wealth come in andfill our home with wealth!” His wife disagreed, “My dear, why not invite Success?” Their daughter-in-law gave her own suggestion: “Wouldn’t it be better to invite Love? Our home will be filled with love then.” “Let’s heed our daughter-in-law’s advice,” said the husband to his wife. “ Go out and invite Love to be our guest.”Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other two also got up and followed him. Surprised, the woman asked Wealth and Success: “ I only invited Love, why are you com ing in?”The old men repli ed together. “ If you had invited Wealth or Success, the othertwo of us would have stayed out. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would, is it the best solution?Despite what it promises, GM technology actually has not increased the production potential of any crop. In fact, studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report that analyzed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.Something else, however, has been on the rise, While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides (杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. “The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true,” said Bill Christison, President of the US National Farm Coalition. At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report. As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which “green” farming is supposed to be the first choice.28. The author develops the second paragraph mainly .A. by classificationB. by comparisonC. by exampleD. by process29.What does the underlined word “boost ” in the third paragraph probably mean?A. control.B. evaluateC.increase D.. obtain.30. GM companies promise farmers that they will benefit from ______________.A. use of less chemicalsB. practicing “green” farmingC. fair distribution of their cropsD. using more crops for fuel31. Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards GM technology?A. OptimisticB. DefensiveC.Casual D. DisapprovingD(NEW YORK) A French tourist highly praised for rescuing a two-year-old girl in Manhattan said he didn’t think twice before diving into the freezing East River. Tuesday’s Daily News said 29-year-old Julien Duret from France was the man who left the spot quickly after the rescue last Saturday. He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank at the South Street Seaport museum. He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had dived in after him.“I didn’t think at all,” Duret told the Daily News. “It happened very fast. I reacted very fast.”Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier(码头) when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he approached the river. Immediately, he took off his coat and jumped into the water. When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless, he said. 河南省周口市中英文学校2013-2014学年高二下学期期中考试英语试题AI hear many parents saying that their teenage children are rebellion(反叛的). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they degree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to seize at one another’s hands for safety. They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(蚕茧) -----into a larger cocoon. It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly opened up a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from newspapers and TV what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award(奖励)high narks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the difficulty is worth getting over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come-----with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.21.The writer’s purpose in writing this passage is to tell_______.A.readers how to be popular in the worldB.parents how to control and guide their childrenC.teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselvesD.people how to understand and respect each other22.According to the writer, many teenagers think they are brave enough toact on their own, but, in fact, most of them______.A.are not sure of themselvesB.have much difficulty in understanding each otherC.dare not do thingsD.are very much afraid of getting lost23.During the teenage years, one should learn to_____.A.become different from others in as many ways as possibleB. B. find one’s real selfC.get into the right reason and become popularD.D. rebel against parentsBDo you like to eat out? Do you like to eat quickly? Do you like inexpensive food? Some people go to fast-food restaurants for these reasons. In the past, people usually went to diners(小餐馆)for these reasons. In fact, many people in the States still go to diners today for the same reasons.A man named Walter Scott had the first “diner” in 1872. It wasn’t a real diner. It was only a food cart. People on the street walked up to the cart to buy food. These carts served late-night workers who wanted a cup of coffee and a late-night meal. The meal was a sandwich or boiled eggs. In 1887, Samuel Jones built the first diner big enough to allow the customers to come inside. However, they did not sit down. Later, people built diners with counters and stools, and people sat down while they ate. Before long, many diners stayed open around the clock. In other words, people were able to eat in diner at any time. Diners changed in other ways, too. The original menu of sandwiches and coffee became bigger. It included soup, favorite dishes, and a breakfast menu. In addition, diners soon became permanent buildings. They were no longer carts on wheels.Diners today look similar to the diners of the early 1900s. They are usually buildings with large windows. Inside, the diners have shining counters with stools, booths, and tables and chairs. People can eat all three meals in a modern diner.Today, many people eat in fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s and Burger King. However, the diner remains an American tradition, and thousands of people still enjoy eating there. It was popular a century ago, and it is still popular today.24. Samuel Johns built the first diner big enough to allow the customersto come insideC. American diners serve many types of food 24 hours a day to theircustomersD. Diners are different from fast-food restaurants in many waysCI came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet, I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the car accident I had to see a doctor---- and go to court(法庭).After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury. I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.But every time I want to see doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines and it cost me $215.My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made pay him $770.Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance(保险) company the date I was leaving American. Knowing that, they played for time,….. and I left without getting a cent.My experience taught me two things about America firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality(职业道德). Secondly foreigners are still being treated unfairly. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.28. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares. Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce ,or possibly erase(抹去),the effect of painful memories. In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased. The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, While others support it.Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories."Some memories can ruin people's lives . They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering."But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past."All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.32. The passage is mainly about .A. a new medical inventionB. a new research on the pillC. a way of erasing painful memoriesD. an argument about the research on the pill33. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that, ”and it is even harder to say, “I was wrong, and you were right about that. ”I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain grocery store in the neighborhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons (箱子). Then he related an incident and I began to remember clearly the incident he was describing.I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the dairy food department where the incident took place. There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was an impressive display of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were stacked three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the display back together, so I went to work. The Manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees inspecting (examining)some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the criminal. He severely scolded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I protested my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, obviously the manager did not.24. The author was ______ when he wrote this article.A. about 8B. about 18C. about 23D. about 1525. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. The next person.I asked was a policeman. He listened to me carefully, nodded and gently took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I nodded politely and began walking in the direction he pointed.About an hour passed and I noticed that the houses were getting fewer and fewer and green fields were appearing on either side of me. People's understanding of health also becomes deeper with the progress in scientific research. Recently the term "health" has come to have a wider meaning than it used to. It no longer means just the absence of illness. Today, health means the well-being of your body, your mind and your relationship with other people. This new concept of health is closely related to another term-quality of life. Quality of life is the degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life. Why has the emphasis of health shifted from the absence of disease to a broader focus on the quality of a person's life? One reason for this has to do with the length and conditions of life that people can now expect. Medical advances have made it possible for people today to live longer, healthier lives. Imagine for a moment that you were born in the year 1900. You couldhave expected on average to live until about the age of 47. They know that they will have to face difficult moments, that they won't be able to communicate with the persons around them, and that they have to work in illegal conditions to get the money they need for their families, but they all take these chances and they hope they will succeed. On the other hand, there are people who immigrate (移民) just for the sake of the people they love. They leave their families to make other families with the people they love. Women go to meet their men who have chosen other countries to start a new life, even if they miss their families and friends. Maybe they don't have a place to work but they are able to wait to see what destiny (命运) has for them. There are also the cases of the people who are forced to leave their countries because of a war which threatens their lives. They'd rather start from the very beginning again than risk putting their lives in danger. When well-developed countries see that their homeland is being "invaded" by lots of immigrants, they set new laws that make immigration harder. As a result of this, many illegal immigrants cross the borders and are eager to work, although they are paid only half the amount of money native workers receive for the same kind of job.The opinions of the local people are varied and they range from total refusal to complete acceptance. Immigrants in countries which have large communities of them are fighting for the recognition of their social rights and for equal treatment. Whenpeople are touched, the quantity of hemoglobin (血红蛋白)-a type of matter thatproduces the red color in blood increases greatly. This results in more oxygenreaching every part of the body and the whole body benefits. In experiments,bottle-fed baby monkeys were separated from their mothers for the first ten daysof life. They became sad and negative. Studies showed the monkeys were more probableto become ill than other babies that were allowed to stay with their mothers.Human babies react in much the same way. Some years ago, a scientist noticedthat some well-fed babies in a clean nursery became weak. Yet babies in anothernursery were growing healthily, even though they ate less well and were not keptas clean. The reason, he concluded, was that they often had touches from nurses.Experiments show that most people like being touched. And nearly all doctorsbelieve touch helps to reduce patients' fear of treatment. Of course there is timewhen a touch is not welcome. But even if we don't like being touched, a smile canmake us feel better. Smiling increases blood flow and starts the production of "happybrain" chemicals. For example, a group of neighbors may gather on their street to eat food, play music and visit with one another. This is called a block party. A woman might invite a group of women to a party called a baby shower for a friend who is about to give birth. Guests bring presents for the new baby.Americans also attend tailgate parties. A tailgate is the back end of a truck or other vehicle that opens down. The tailgate parties are a big part of sports culture in the United States. Friends bring food and drink to a sports event. Birthday parties usually include gifts and a birthday cake with candles. In many parts of the United States, cupcakes have become a popular replacement for cakes.Birthday parties can be low cost or very costly. Some parents take their children’s birthday parties very seriously, even when the child is too young to fully understand the celebration. One group of parents started a website called Birthdays Without Pressure. They decided that some parents were under too much social pressure to plan costly parties for their children. The group sees this movement as an example of America’s culture of “too much stuff”. In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic(经济的) reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响)its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏)the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的)and do not like change.Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move_things_forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previousarchitectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.32.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?A.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.B.Some of them are not attractive.C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.33.Which of the following is true according to the author?A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.C.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.j-yD.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.34.By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means “________.”A.destroy old buildingsB.respect people's feelings for historical buildings21C.put things in a different placeD.choose new architectural styles35.What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.B.To explain why people dislike change.C.To warn that we should end up living in caves.D.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Giving someone all your love is never an assurance(保证)that they will love you back. Do not expect love in return;but if it does not,be content it has grown in yours. Do not rely on one's appearance;it can trick you. Do not rely on wealth;even that fades away. Rely on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them. Dream what you want to dream;go where you want to go;be what you want to be,because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off. May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials(考验)to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy. The happiest people do not necessarily have the best of everything;they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those who appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives. Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you,it probably hurts the other person, too. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die,you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.29.I n t his passage, the writer wants to tell us ______.A.how to treat our life B.where to go with other personsC.what to do in our life D.how to get on well with other persons30. A 10-year Australian study found that old people with a large circle of friends were 22 percent less likely to die during the study period than those with fewer friends. A large 2007 study showed an increase of nearly 60 percent in the risk for obesity (肥胖) among people whose friends gained weight. And last year, Harvard researchers reported that strong social ties could improve brain health as we age.“In general, the role (作用) of friendship in our lives isn’t well realized,”said Rebecca, a professor at the University of North Carolina. “Friendship has a bigger effect on our psychological (心理的) health than family relationships.”While many friendship studies are about the close relationships of women, some research shows that men can benefit, too. In a six-year study of 736 middle-aged men, having friendships reduces the risk of heart attack. Only smoking was as important a risk factor (因素) as having little social support.Exactly why friendship has such a big effect isn’t entirely clear. While friends can send a sick person to the hospital or pick up medicine, the benefits go well beyond physical assistance. Friendship clearly has a big psychological effect. “People with stronger friendships feel like there is someone they can turn to,”said Karen, a doctor. “The message of these studies is that friends make your life better.”33. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.36 Try the following steps:Calm yourself. 37 You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. 38 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your mounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.39 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.Don’t forget to forgive yourself. 40 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.A. Why should you forgive?B. How should you start to forgive?C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.D. Try to see things from you offender’s angle.E. AFrank Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York., in 1852. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people’s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品 ) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store., selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. His business skills and his wealth.B. The low price of the goods he sold.C. His trip to Germany and his huge order of knives.D. His natural skill for showing things.BWe each have a memory. That’s why we can still remember things after a long time. Some people have very good memories and they can easily learn many things by heart, but some people can only remember things when they say or do them again and again. Many of the great men of the world have got surprising memories.A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his mother language when he is a small child. He hears the sounds, remembers them and then he learns to speak. Some children are living with their parents in foreign countries. They can learn two languages as easily as one because they hear, remember and speak two languages every day. In school it is not so easy to learn a foreign language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects, too.But your memory will become better and better when you do more and more exercises.25、Some people can easily learn many things by heart because .A.they always sleep very well B.they often eat good foodC.they have very good memories D.they read a lot of books26、In school the pupils can’t learn a foreign language well because.A.they have no good memories B.they have no recordersC.they have too much time for it D.they are busy with other subjects 27、Your memory will become better and better .A.if you do more and more exercisesB.if you have plenty of good foodC.if you do morning exercises every dayD.if you get up earlyCAbout ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman! There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green - a strange world indeed.Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color. Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.28. The passage is mainly about _____________.A. color blindnessB. women being luckier than menC. danger caused by color blindnessD. color and its surprising effects.29. According to the passage, with the help of the “cones”, we can_______________.A. tell different shapesB. tell orange from yellowC. kill mosquitoesD. see in a weak light30. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women?A. Women are more careful.B. There are fewer color-blind womenC. Women are fonder of driving than men.D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.31. Which of the statements about the color- blind is true?A. All of them see everything in shades of green.B. None of them can see deep red.C. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.D. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.DMany people go to school for a good education. They learn languages, history, maths and other lessons. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. No matter how much a teacher knows, he cannot teach his students everything they want to know. His work is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves. It is always more important to know how to studyby oneself. It is quite easy to learn something in a language or a formula(公式)in maths, but it is difficult to use a formula in finding the answer to a maths problem . Great inventors do not get everything from school but they can invent many things and change the world a lot. Though Thomas Edison invented many things he didn’t have much school education. How do they do all these? Because they know how to study. Alot of things are not taught in the classroom. They get knowledge from books outside school. They work hard all their lives, and the most important thing is that they know how to use their head.32. What do many people go to school for?A. To make friendsB. To get everythingC. To study by themselvesD. To get a good education33. What should a student learn to do from school?A. Try to remember more knowledge and formulas.B. Try to learn how to read and how to think.C. Try to remember what the teachers teach.D. Try to invent the world.34. How can an inventor invent things? The most important thing is how to:A. be a great inventorB. study by himselfC. use his head wellD. remember what he’s been taught35. What is the main idea of this passage?A. But relaxation is completely necessary for a healthy mind and body.Stress is an natural part of everyday lift and there is no way to avoid it.In fact , it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount ofstress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only whenthe stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand(忍受) depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviouslyprime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signsof unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or "flight" andin more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. Thecrises(危机)we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little thestress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. And viewing TV for an average of six hours a day can cut short your life by five years. The research claims that a sedentary(久坐的) lifestyle is as bad for health as smoking and obesity, because of the dangers caused by inactivity and the greater opportunities it offers for unhealthy eating. The academics conducting the study set out to calculate the overall risk to life expectancy from watching television. Their research involved more than 11,000 people over the age of 25.Writing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, they concluded. "TV viewing time may be associated with a loss of life, which is similar to other major chronic disease risk factors such as physical inactivity and obesity."The researchers, from the University of Queensland, used information from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study, together with population and death rate data. But they said: "Although we used Australian data, the effects in other industrialized and developing countries are likely to be similar, considering the large amounts of time spent watching TV and similarities in disease patterns." In the United Kingdom, the average amount of time spent watching TV is four hours a day, compared with five hours in the United States.Earlier this year, a separate study suggested the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease, or dying early, rises by as much as 20 percent after just two hours a day in front of the box.England's Chief Medical Officer, Sally Davies, said: "Physical activity offers huge benefits and these studies back what we already know - that a sedentary lifestyle carries additional risks.
