注:在否定句中,besides 也表示“除……之外不再有……”,与but, except 同义。
如:No one passed the exam besides [except] Jim. 除吉姆外,没一个人通过考试。
2. 关于but 与except(1) 两者都可表示“除……外不再有……”,但含义上略有差别:but侧重指意义的几乎完整性,而except 则侧重指后面除去的部分。
比较:All are here but one. 除一个人没到,其他人都到了。

(2) 在现代英语中,but 的介词用法十分有限,一般来说,它只能用在下列词语之后:① no, no one, nobody, nothing, nowhere 等② any, anyone, anybody, anything, anywhere 等③ every, everyone, everybody, everything, everywhere 等④ all, none 等⑤ who, what, where 等Everyone knows it but you. 除你之外大家都知道。

3. exercise在这里是动词,表示“进行练习,训练,锻炼”。
作为此意义时,exercise后不接宾语。
有时,exercise也可用于表示“使锻炼”,此时是及物动词,可以在其后接宾语。
如:You're getting fat; you should exercise more.你长胖了;应该多锻炼。
She is exercising her horse in the park.她在公园里操练马匹。
4. one third表示“三分之一”。
英语中表示分数时,多用基数词表示分子,序数词表示分母,如果是带分数,应用and连接整数和分数部分。
如果分子大于一,分母应使用复数形式。
表示“二分之……”,“四分之……”时,常使用half或quarter代替。
分子中的one也常可使用不定冠词代替。
如:one / a half二分之一;一半one / a quarter四分之一two thirds三分之二one and five eighths一又八分之五5. rise表示“升起,增长,上升”等意恩,通常作不及物动词用,其后不接宾语。

2.howmany的用法(1)对therebe句型中主语的数量如:some,five,onlyone等提问时,如果主语是可数名词,不管主语是单数还是复数的一般都用复数形式提问,因为问话人不知道具体的数量是多少,而且many只能接可数名词的复数形式,所以be一定要用are.即用Howmany+可数名词复数+arethere+地点/时间状语?的句型结构.例如:①Thereisabookonthedesk.Howmanybooksarethereonthedesk?②Therearesevendaysinaweek.Howmanydaysarethereinaweek?(2)记忆口诀howmany在句首,名词复数跟着走,一般问句紧相随,其它成分不要丢。
3.howmuch的用法(1)用来询问事物的数量,后接不可数名词。
例如:Howmuchmilkisthereintheglass?玻璃杯里有多少牛奶?(2)用来询问事物的重量。
例如:-Howmuchdoesthepigweigh?这头猪多重?-Eightykilos.八十公斤。
(3)howmuch意为“多少钱”时,可单独使用,也可构成词组howmuchmoney,但英语中常省略money,用来询问某物的价钱、价格。
(注意:howmuch询问价格时,它的回答若是中国的货币单位应采用汉语拼音yuan,fen来表示,几角常采用几十分来表示,字母用小写,且不用复数。
)例如:-Howmuchistheeraser?这块橡皮擦多少钱?-Ninetytwofen.九角二分。
