It was a crisp autumn evening when I logged onto my computer and saw the reminder pop up - Liam's 20th birthday was just two weeks away! As one of my closest friends, I knew I had to do something really special to celebrate this milestone. A simple birthday card or gift just wouldn't cut it. Liam deserved an epic celebration with all our friends to mark turning 20 and the end of our teenage years.
I immediately started brainstorming ideas. A birthday party was a no-brainer, but it had to be a total surprise. Liam loves being the center of attention, but hates when people make a fuss directly to his face. So the challenge would be pulling something off behind his back without him catching wind of it beforehand. This was a mission I was determined to accept.
The first step was assembling my party planning committee and support crew. I couldn't do this all alone. I shot off texts to our friends Sarah, Tyler, and Jess. They were all quickly on board
and we agreed to meet up at the student dining hall the next day to start the covert operation.
As we gathered around a corner table, I laid out the objectives: 1) Secure a venue 2) Arrange food and drinks 3) Compile the guest list and send invites 4) Plan decorations, music, and activities 5) Most importantly, keep Liam completely in the dark. We had our work cut out for us, but with teamwork and meticulous coordination, I was confident we could pull off the perfect surprise party.
Sarah took the lead on venue scouting. Her cousin was the RA for a dorm that had a decent common area we could potentially reserve and decorate. That seemed like our best bet to host something on a college student's budget. Tyler and Jess were put in charge of food and drink planning - finger foods, snacks, pizza, soda and beer (thoug

Here's a 2000-word continuation in English, written from a student's perspective, describing preparing a birthday party for a friend:
Birthday Bash for My Best Bud
Last weekend was one of the most hectic but fun times I've had in a while! It was my best friend Jess's 18th birthday, and I was in charge of planning her surprise birthday party. I wanted to make it extra special since turning 18 is such a big milestone.
Jess and I have been inseparable since we met on the first day of kindergarten. We instantly clicked over our love of dinosaurs and have been two peas in a pod ever since. She's more like a sister to me than just a friend. I had to go all out to celebrate her finally becoming an adult!
The planning started about a month in advance. I created a group chat with some of our closest friends to coordinate all the details. Keeping it a surprise from Jess was the trickiest part. That girl can sniff out a secret from a mile away!
First thing was booking the perfect venue. I knew Jess would want it to be somewhere fun but not too over-the-top. After some debate, we decided to reserve a private room at the bowling alley we used to have birthdays at as kids. A little nostalgic but still cool for teenagers.
Next up was the guest list. I typed up a list of all our friends from school, her teammates from the soccer team, relatives, you name it. I wanted to pack the place! Jess has always been the life of the party, so I knew she'd love having a huge bash.
Once I had the headcount, I could start planning food and drinks. You can never go wrong with pizza at a teenager's party, am I right? I called around to a bunch of local places to get quotes and ended up getting an insane deal on 20 pies from a new joint that just opened up.
For beverages, I knew I'd need a plethora of options. Soda, juice boxes for the young cousins, maybe some grown-up beverages for the aunties and uncles... But not for us, of course! We're still underage for another couple months. Definitely no alcoholic drinks at this party. Pinky promise!
With food and venue squared away, it was time for decorations. This was my chance to really go all out and make it an epic night to remember. After a marathon shopping session, I had stocked up on silly string, glow sticks, colorful wigs and glasses, one of those inflatable dances guys that flails around...basically anything bright, loud and obnoxious that would infuriate our parents. Just how Jess would want it!
I also picked up a couple boards' worth of poster paper to make massive Happy Birthday signs. A few of the artsy girls in our friend group volunteered to decorate them with brilliant designs, drawings of inside jokes, embarrassing pictures from
childhood, the whole nine yards. Those signs would be a showstopper for sure.
With just a few days until the big party, we had to buckle down and get all the tiny details squared away. The group chat was a constant flurry of messages as we split up remaining tasks. Amy was in charge of making a playlist of Jess's favorite songs to blast at the party. Spencer volunteered to pick up a gag gift, knowing how much Jess loves dumb pranks. Kayla's mom was an amazing baker and offered to make a custom cake with a photograph printed onto the frosting.
Finally, the night before the party, we all met up at the bowling alley to decorate. We turned that place upside down, plastering the walls with streamers and happy birthday signs. The inflatable dancing guy got a prime spot right in the middle of the room. By the time we were done, you could spot the place from across the parking lot!
The morning of Jess's birthday, I was aamassive bundle of nerves. So much effort and secrecy had gone into pulling this off.
I was going to be crushed if she didn't absolutely love it! I swung by her house first thing under the pretense of wanting to get breakfast together for her birthday. When she opened the door,
my heart sank a bit as she looked like she was still half asleep and in a grumpy mood.
"Happy birthday, grumpster!" I gave her a big hug as soon as she answered. "Get that frown turned upside down, we've got a fun day planned!"
"Yeah, yeah," she yawned, rubbing her eyes. "Just let me take a shower and I'll be a little more human."
While she was getting ready, I texted everyone to make sure they were in position at the bowling alley. This was it, the moment of truth! When she finally emerged, looking more awake and refreshed, I tossed her a bagel for the road.
"C'mon, let's go grab something more substantial for your bday breakfast," I said, trying to sound nonchalant.
We headed over to the bowling alley, making casual chit chat. Jess didn't suspect a thing! As we approached the entrance, I could see our friends peeking out the windows with big grins on their faces. Here goes nothing...
"Actually, I kind of fibbed about breakfast," I said as I opened the door with a flourish. "SURPRISE HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESS!"
Her jaw dropped as she saw the absolutely bonkers scene we had created inside. The look of shock and joy on her face was
better than I could have imagined! She immediately shrieked like crazy and ran over to hug everyone. Tears were streaming down her face as she thanked me for putting it all together.
"You are INSANE! This is the coolest thing ever!" she bellowed, pulling me in for a bear hug. "I can't believe you did all this for me! Best birthday ever, hands down!"
Seeing how emotional and happy she was made all the effort worth it ten times over. We spent the whole day bowling, eating obscene amounts of pizza, rocking out to the music, silly stringing each other until we could barely see...Just a day of pure, uninhibited fun like we loved as kids.
As the night wound down and the party started clearing out, Jess pulled me aside with a sappy look on her face. She gave me one final tight hug and whispered "Thanks for being such an incredible friend. I really hit the buddy jackpot with you."
My heart melted into a puddle on the floor. Corny as it sounds, that's really all I needed to hear. Jess's happiness was the best gift I could have asked for. I can't wait to start planning her 19th bash! Though it'll be pretty hard to top this one...

It was time to start planning Jake's surprise birthday party! Jake has been my best friend since we were little kids, and his 18th birthday was coming up in a few weeks. I wanted to make it an extra special celebration since we'll be heading off to different colleges next year.
The first step was getting a guest list together. I decided to keep it relatively small and intimate - just our close group of friends from school. I made a group chat and asked everyone to keep it on the down-low so the surprise wouldn't be ruined. Keeping a secret is hard with how quickly news travels in our friend group!
Next up was finding a venue that would be fun but also affordable on a high school student's budget. Jake loves anything sports or game-related, so I thought a bowling alley would be perfect. I called around to a few different places to compare pricing for a private party room rental. Cosmic Bowl ended up having the best deal - just 100 for 3 hours in one of their party rooms, which came with 4 bowling lanes, a couple of big screen TVs, and a awesome sound system to hook up our music playlists.
With the where figured out, it was time to plan the when. Jake's actual birthday was on a Wednesday, but that wouldn't
work well with everyone's schedules. I decided to throw the party on the Saturday after his birthday to make it easier for all our friends to attend after school and activities. I booked Cosmic Bowl for 7-10pm that night.
The trickiest part was going to be getting Jake there without him suspecting anything. My mom agreed to take him out for a "birthday dinner" that night under the pretext of my having a group project to work on. Little did he know the "project" was actually setting up his party! I'd have to be sure to get there extra early to have everything ready before they arrived.
Now for the fun part - party decorations, food, and activities! We all chipped in 10 each to cover the costs. I headed to the party supply store to go all out in Jake's favorite colors - blue and green. I bought blue and green paper lanterns, tablecloths, plastic cups and plates, and a huge #18 mylar balloon. For food, I knew we'd need plenty of classic bowling alley snacks like pizzas, wings, nachos, and candy. The bowling alley had a deal where you could get a few large pizzas and a couple buckets of fried foods for a set price when you booked one of their parties.
To make it more than just bowling, I printed out some trivia questions about Jake's life and interests. We could play a round between bowling games with a little prize for the winner. I also
bought an inflatable baseball toss game and basketball hoops for more activities. For music, I made a massive "lit birthday bangers" playlist on Spotify with all of our favorite jams.
With the plans all set, I could hardly wait for the party! In the days leading up to it, a few of us worked on making "Happy 18th Birthday Jake!" posters and banners to decorate the party room. I also grabbed some fun colorful props like wacky wigs and glasses for everyone to wear and use in the obligatory silly group photos.
Finally, the day of Jake's surprise party arrived! A bunch of us got to Cosmic Bowl a couple hours early to start setting everything up. We pushed a few of the tables together to make one long food and present table, laid out the green tablecloth, and set up the decorations. The colored lanterns and that big
#18 balloon really made the room feel fun and festive! We also had time to warm up on the lanes with a practice game before Jake arrived.
At 7 pm, I got the group text from my mom - they were five minutes away! We killed the music and lights, hiding in the dark party room. When the door opened, Jake walked in first, obviously confused by the darkness and silence. Then, once he made it far enough into the room, we all jumped out yelling
"SURPRISE!" with the lights and music blasting. The look on his face was priceless, completely stunned but then so happy and grateful once he realized what was happening.
Over the next three hours, we bowled, played trivia and the other activities, stuffed ourselves with junk food, and danced our faces off to the sprawling 5+ hour music playlist. Whenever a new banger would come on, pretty much all of us would put down whatever we were doing to run out and have a little dance party in front of the lanes. I don't think the smiles ever left our faces that night!
Looking back, I'm so glad I took the time to plan a fun birthday surprise for one of my best friends. So many of the specifics like the venue, activities, and little decorative details made it extra memorable and personalized just for Jake. As we're all getting ready to go our separate ways after graduation, nights like these celebrating together with our friend family will be extra irreplaceable. I'll forever cherish the memory of revealing the surprise, seeing the look of pure joy and gratitude on Jake's face, and all of us being able to let loose and act like kids one last time before having to be "adults." It was the perfect sendoff to our high school years and kick off to the next chapter!。
