Dear John,
Thank you very much for your concern over the earthquake in Ya’an, Sichuan Province. Now I’m writing to tell you something about it.
As far as I know, about two hundred people were killed and more than ten thousand injured in the earthquake. The army was soon sent to join the local government in the rescue. Together with the local people, they are making every effort to search for the trapped and send the injured to hospitals.
I know you are dying to help out. But personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to come. You know, danger still exists. Besides, you will find it hard to communicate with people there; after all, you speak a different language. Anyway, thank you for your offer and I will keep you informed of the situation.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

W: Hi, Mr. Smith. I’m Dr. Hawkins. Why are you here today?
M: I thought it would be a good idea to get a check-up.
W: Yes, well you haven’t had one for…five years. You should have one every year. M: I know. I figure as long as there’s nothing wrong, why go to see the doctor? W: Well, the best way to avoid serious illnesses is to find out about them early.
So, try to come at least once a year for your own good.
M: O.K.
W: Let me see here. Your eyes and ears look fine. Take a deep breath, please.
Do you smoke, Mr. Smith?
M: Yes.
W: Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and heart disease, you know. You really should quit.
M: I’ve tried a hundred times, but I just can’t seem to kick the habit.
W: Well, we have classes and some medicine that might help. I’ll give you more information before you leave.
M: O.K., thanks, doctor.

W: Good evening, and welcome to this weeken d’s Business World, the TV program for and about business people. Tonight, we have Mr. Steven Kayne, who has just taken over an established bicycle shop. Tell us, Mr. Kayne, what made you want to run your own store?
M: Well, I’ve always loved racing bikes and fixing them. When I was working full-time as a salesman for a big company, I seldom had time to enjoy my hobby.
I knew then that as soon as I had enough money to get my own business going,
I’d do it. I had my heart set on it and I didn’t let anything s tand in my way. When I went down to the bank and got a business loan, I knew I’d love being my own boss. Now my time is my own. I open the store when I want and leave when I want.
W: Have you hired any employees to work with you yet?
M: Yeah, a couple of friends of mine who love biking as much as I do. They help me out a few days a week. It’s great because we play cards or just sit around and talk when there are no customers.
W: Thank you, Mr. Kayne. We wish you success in your new business.
Text 10
My friend Leo makes up weak and poor excuses whenever there is something he doesn’t want to do. Just two weeks ago, he was at my house when he decided he didn’t want to go to work. He called his boss and said he had to get a new set
of tires put on his truck. Then he sat down and watched TV with me. Not only had
he lied but his excuse wasn’t a very good one. Another time, he cancelled a date
with his girlfriend at the last minute telling her he had to get a new battery
for his truck. She was angry and refused to go out with him again until he apologized. Last weekend, Leo offered the poorest excuse yet. He’d promised to
help me move some furniture from my parents’ house to my new apartment. He was supposed to bring his truck over about 8 o’clo ck Saturday morning. But three hours later, he called to apologize, saying that he’d been getting a new set
of tires put on his truck. I guess he’d forgotten he used the same excuse when
he called his boss from my house. I think I need a new set of friends.。
