In Chinese myths dragon is a positive symbol,
indicating being generous, wise and noble. Besides,
they can bring good fortune. Dragon has a good
reputation. In emperors' robes, there was a gold
dragon with five sharp claws. While in the western
countries, dragon is considered to be a frightening
creature. Due to its fierce appearance and the huge
destruction, dragon has a bad reputation. Some people say dragon died out long time ago, but in fact, dragon doesn't exist in the world. It is an animal made up by man.
Dragon is an ancient mystery. But recently, another mystery has caught our attention. The “Monster of Lake Tianchi” has been back in the news since several sightings. Tianchi is a volcanic lake and covers an area of about ten square kilometers. Some tourists here claimed that they saw a mysterious creature with two huge horns under the calm surface of the lake. It was in the middle of the lake for several minutes and soon dived into the water and disappeared. The experts are sceptical about the description, because the water temperature in the lake is so low that such a large living creature is unlikely to live in the lake. They can't adapt to such low temperature. The experts hope to find some evidence to throw light on the mysterious phenomenon.

We usually tell ourselves that our life will be complete when we get a nicer car, when we are able to go on a nice vacation, when we retire ...
The __1__ is, there's no better time to be __2__ than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with __3__. It's best to admit this to yourself and __4__ to be happy anyway.
One of my __5__ quotes (引言) comes from Alfred D'Souza. He said, “For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to __6__ real life. But there was always some obstacle (障碍) __7__ the way, something to be __8__ first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. __9__ life would begin. At last I realized that these __10__ were my life.”
This view has helped me to see that there is no __11__ to happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure (珍惜) every __12__ that you have. And treasure it more because you __13__ it with someone special, special enough to spend your time ... and __14__ that time waits for no one.
__15__ stop waiting until you finish school, until you start work, until you get married, until you have kids, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is __16__,until you retire, until you __17__,until you are born again to __18__ that there is no better time than right now to be happy.
Happiness is a(n) __19__,not an end.
Thought for the day, “Work like you don't need money, __20__ like you've never been hurt, and dance like no one's watching.”

I was asked by a reader recently why so many animals seem to have pink ears, when their bodies are all different colours? The truth is that most animals actually don't have pink ears. Let us explain.
Near the equator (赤道), where the climate is hot, animals are likely to have darker skin, including on their ears. Think of the African elephant, which has quite dark ears. In colder climates, skin colour is usually lighter and often pink.
Why is skin colour different in different climates? Skin pigmentation, which is what gives skin its colour, can protect against sunburn and skin cancer (癌症). When animals live in colder parts of the world, they don't need it as much to survive. Light-coloured skin also helps animals stay warmer because it reduces heat loss, which is useful if you're in a colder climate.
For most animals, the colour of their fur or other body covering has generally developed as camouflage. That allows animals to mix into the background and avoid being eaten or for predators (捕食者) to remain hidden during hunting. One example is the sandy-coloured coat of the desert fennec fox, which uses camouflage for both hunting and hiding.
By the way, in many animals, ears come in many different shapes and sizes. For example, in bats, the serval (a type of African wildcat) and the fennec fox, the ears are large compared to their body size — this helps them hear better because it allows them to sense more sound waves. Naked mole-rats have tiny ears because they need to dig a lot. Big ears would get in the way. The other downside of big ears is that you can lose a lot of body heat. That's why animals that live in really cold places, like the Arctic fox, have quite small ears.
A.A teacher. B.A librarian.
C.A zoo worker. D.A science writer.

I was asked by a reader recently why ... Let us
explain.”

2.What does th e underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Sunlight. B.Camouflage.
C.Skin pigmentation. D.Light-coloured skin.

根据画线词前一句内容“Skin pigmentation, which is what gives skin its colour, can protect against sunburn and skin cancer (癌症).”

3.Which animal uses its skin colour to protect itself from being eaten?
A.The Arctic fox.
B.The naked mole-rat.
C.The African elephant.
D.The desert fennec fox.

根据第四段中的“That allows animals to mix into the background ... the desert fennec fox, which uses camouflage for both hunting and hiding.”

4.What do we know about animals living in cold places?
A.They usually have small light-coloured ears.
B.They know ways to store body heat.
C.They need big ears to keep warm.
D.They usually have good hearing.

根据第二段中的“In colder climates, skin colour is usually lighter and often pink.”及最后一段中的“That's why animals that live in really cold places, like the Arctic fox, have quite small ears.”

I was worried about the missing bag all the evening. I tried to remember exact what I had done from the time I left the store until at the time I got home. I remembered whether I had looked at the bag while I was having lunch. So I must have it when I left the store. I remembered show it to a friends on the bus. But I had the bag then. I came directly from the bus to my house, and I must have left it on the bus. I was in a hurry to get on and forgot to check the packages lying on the floor. This is the third time that I lost a bag. I should be much careful next time.
第三句:whether→that或去掉whether
第五句:show→showing; 去掉a或friends→friend
But→So
第八句:on→off
第九句:I后加have

Li Hua
Dear Jack,
I am happy to hear from you again. Today I would like to share some interesting information about Shenyang Strange Slope with you.
In April, 1990, the discovery of the Strange Slope in Shenyang, Liaoning Province drew attention worldwide. It is 80 meters long and 15 meters wide. If a car stops at the foot of the slope, it will run to the top of the slope without any difficulty. The contrary occurs when cars attempt to drift downwards. Experts and scholars have attempted to solve the mystery of it. Commonly scholars believe this phenomenon results from magnetic fields and optical illusions. Due to the lack of evidence for a satisfactory explanation, the Strange Slope is still regarded as a mystery.
I hope you can visit Shenyang Strange Slope some day with me.
Yours,
Li Hua

(Text 10)
M:My wife and I occasionally go to a nice restaurant to eat. My wife's mother lives with us and she stays with the children. This makes it very easy for us to go out for the evening.
Last week we went to the restaurant in a new hotel. We had a wonderful meal. First, we had soup and a salad. Then Helen, my wife, had mutton with peas and carrots, and I had a beef steak with potatoes. For dessert, I had some ice-cream and Helen had fresh fruit. We had several cups of coffee after we finished eating. The food was delicious, the quantity was large, and it wasn't too expensive.
Our children don't like to eat in the restaurants because they have to sit and be quiet for a long time. They would rather go to their grandmother's farm. Their grandmother — my mother prepares everything they like. She usually has fried chicken, corn, and hot biscuits with honey. She always serves plenty of chocolate ice-cream and cake for dessert.
I'm always surprised that my father doesn't weigh a lot more when I see how much he eats. But he works very hard on the farm from about 5 o'clock in the morning until it gets dark in the evening.
When my parents visit us in the city, we usually take them to a restaurant. I know they enjoy
it, but my father always eats something else after he gets home. The quantity may be large in the restaurant, but it is still not large enough for a hungry farmer.

A
There are several reasons why cats climb trees, mostly to do with defensive purposes.Cats, as predators (捕食者), like to understand their environment well.Cats climb trees to get a better view of their surroundings, to help them see any potential dangers or potential prey (被掠食者).While cats are predators, they can also be easily attacked by
larger animals.A tree often provides a safe hiding place. In the wild,
cats climb up trees to give them a resting place that is out of predators'
range. It also helps disguise their presence, which can prevent any prey
from noticing that there is a cat nearby.
Sometimes some cats may climb trees for fun, or possibly to work on improving their climbing abilities. Kittens frequently test out their claw skills by trying to climb up everything, from bookcases to trees to a person's leg.Climbing practice is good for cats; it can improve their strength and flexibility and teach them an important defensive skill. To prevent them from practicing indoor climbing of your furniture, however, owners may wish to buy a carpeted cat tree for climbing.
If a cat has gotten up a tree and cannot get down, the owner may wonder why its remarkable climbing abilities only work in one direction.A cat's claws curve (弯曲) inward, allowing it to take hold of surfaces while going up head first.Unfortunately, this useful climbing curve does nothing to help the animal get back down again.Eventually, most trapped kittens will either jump out of the tree or realize that they can get down by going tail first.Either way, a cat up a tree is usually nothing to panic about unless it is injured; they are intelligent animals and will find out how to get down sooner or later.
A.have fun B.seek food
C.defend themselves D.please their owners

由第一段首句“... mostly to do with defensive purposes”可知,大多数情况下,猫儿爬树是出于自卫。

22.What does the underlined word “disguise” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Find out. B.Focus on.
C.Make clear. D.Cover up.

23.Why do people want to buy carpeted cat trees?
A.To train their cats in climbing.
B.To help protect their furniture.
C.To improve their cats' claw skills.
D.To keep their cats warm in winter.

由第三段中的“To prevent them from practicing indoor climbing of your furniture, however, owners may wish to buy a carpeted cat tree for climbing.”

24.Seeing your cat up a tree, you are supposed to ________.
A.just take it easy
B.lead it down slowly
C.feed some food to it at once
D.keep an eye on it all the time

I'm crazy about reality TV and I can't get enough of it.
Very soon the new series of ITV's Lo v e Island will be starting and I'm counting down the days until it's on my TV screen. It's a show that sends single people abroad to live in a beautiful house in the sun. The audience (观众) at home then watches their highs and lows, their arguments and how their relationships and friendships form and fall apart.
Lo v e Island is just the tip of a huge reality TV iceberg (冰山). There're many other programmes like Big Brother and Geordie Shore. All these shows have something in common: people seem to either love them or hate them.
Perhaps we love them so much because they actually use real people instead of characters. Series and films with actors are great to watch but they aren't real and we know that. With reality TV we can become more interested because the “characters” are real and (usually) not acting.
However, reality TV doesn't appeal_to everyone. Some people say that if you watch reality
TV, it's a sign that your own life is boring. Why watch someone else's life when you have your own to live? Why would you want to sit and watch someone else arguing about silly things on the TV? Other people don't like reality TV because they believe it doesn't show true reality and parts of it are set up. They feel cheated that the “reality” they are watching isn't completely real.
Whether you love or hate reality TV, it's a fact that this genre (类型) has become increasingly popular, and while I understand it can be set up sometimes, I'm still so excited for Lo v e Island to be back on our screens!

Divya Singh from Cardiff went on a short language exchange (交流) to Chile
I went to a talk given by a couple of students who had been on an exchange programme last year, and I hoped I could have a break from my usual school life some day. Then, I got a chance to actually do it, and was soon in a totally different educational culture. A great advantage of my month abroad was that I picked up Spanish much more quickly than in classes back home. As a result, I'd like to do Spanish and Latin American studies at university.
Nelson Grace from Boston went to New Zealand for a summer camp
I stayed on a farm on South Island. Being a city boy, the experience of farming life was totally new, but I loved it and took every chance to go out and help with the work of the farm. I also think I grew up a lot during my summer abroad. I'm not so dependent on my family now.
Bruce Brown from Sydney went to boarding school in England
The students and teachers were really welcoming, but what I found hard to get used to were the seemingly endless rainy days and the fact that it got dark so early in winter. Even so, I did plenty of sport and made a lot of new friends. At the same time, I learned far more than I expected and got good grades.
Carmen Echevarria from Bilbao moved to Scotland with her family for a year
Studying there was a complete surprise to me: even though it looked old-fashioned, we weren't expected to spend hours every evening memorising facts. Instead, we spent a lot of time discussing questions, solving problems and writing creatively. I really appreciated learning to think in new ways.

You want to have fun and adventure and so you decide to travel somewhere to do it. Sounds like a simple enough thing. And basically it is. But what is adventure? That is the key here and the answer can be different for different people.
For those who love sports, adventure travel can have a whole different meaning than for those who like history. The physical travel types that you can find
include such adventure travel as white water rafting
kayaking or climbing and hiking to some mountains somewhere. To
the hiker, backpacking across Ireland might be their adventure. For
this type of person, adventure travel almost always includes
something physical. Often the goal is to push their body's limits and
test their individual endurance (耐力).
For those who less want to climb mountains, adventure travel might mean traveling to Nepal and taking in the local festivals. Wine tasting in Italy is also vacation adventure for the more relaxed traveler who enjoys peace and comfort. Anything that is opposite to the normal scope (范围) of the traveler's lifestyle defines adventure.
Adventure travel is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all type of vacation. Adventure depends on the person's physical limits, how much money the person has and what the person enjoys doing. Going beyond the normal is adventurous for many. If your life is quite busy, then sitting on a beach in the moonlight with your family might be adventure for you. The point is not what you do but that you have a good time and that it is an adventure for you — not for the person next to you.
Do not sit home this year when vacation time rolls around. Go beyond your normal routine and try something new. If you usually spend your vacation sun-bathing on a beach, try hiking instead, through the mountains. Look around you, think beyond your comfort zone and head out。
