1.0 Purpose:
1.1 To define workmanship standards for LP Gas Tank Cylinders.
2.0 Applicability:
2.1 This Standard applies to all LP Gas Tank Cylinders.
2.2 This Standard is to be applied by all Charbroil Team members and subcontractors
of Charbroil.
3.0 Scope
3.1 This Standard does not cover dimensional or print specifications.
3.2 This Standard attempts to cover all major defects and most minor defects.
3.3 Any definitions not covered by this standard shall be addressed by Charbroil
Quality Assurance and may be added to this standard if deemed necessary.
4.0 Definitions:
4.1 Surface Identification:
4.1.1 “A” Surface: The surface that will be viewed when the tank is mounted
correctly in the gas grill. The “A” surface covers all exterior portions of the
Tank Cylinder that can be seen. Primarily decorative or esthetic surface.
4.1.2 “B” Surface:The bottom of the Tank Cylinder.
4.2 Tank Components:
4.2.1 Collar –4” metal guard protecting tank valve. Contains vital information and
has rolled access (handle) used to transport the tank.
4.2.2 Valve – brass device on top of tank that controls flow of gas to and from
tank fitted with internal and external threads for attaching appropriate
appliances. Has knob for opening and closing valve.
4.2.3 Dust Cap – Rubber cap that covers the valve connection opening.
4.2.4 Body – Reservoir for liquid and vaporized fuel.
4.2.5 Foot-ring – Protects the underside of the tank body; provides a means for
setting tank on a flat surface or a mounting bracket for use in appliances.
4.2.6 Sleeve – heavy paper or plastic protective device surrounding the body of
the tank.
4.2.7 Label – Warning label stating requirements for overfill protection.
4.2.7.1 Purge Label –located on valve handwheel (approx 2.5” diameter)
4.2.7.2 OPD Label – located on top dome at collar opening (approx. 1.5
x 2.5 inches)
4.2.7.3 ANSI Warning Label – located on tank sidewall (approx. 4 x 7
inches)
4.3 Defect Descriptions:
4.3.1 Scratch – A fine line with depth caused by a pointed or sharp object.
4.3.2 Scuff – An abrasion mark caused by a force strong enough to distort the
surface without necessarily causing a dent or bend in the metal.
4.3.3 Dent – A dimple or concavity in the surface caused by a blunt force.
4.3.4 Bend – A crease in the metal that extends to an edge of the surface
distorting it from its intended shape.
5.0 Defect Accept / Reject Criteria:
5.1 Collar:
5.1.1 Scratches or Scuff marks: Cannot expose base metal. No more than one
allowable.
5.1.2 Dent: No greater than .500” at greatest diameter point. No more than one
allowable.
5.1.3 Bent: Reject
5.2 Valve, Knob:
5.2.1 Dent: Reject
5.2.2 Bent: Reject
5.2.3 Missing or damaged Dust Cap: Substitute with a non-defective replacement
Dust Cap.
5.2.4 Missing or damaged Purge Notice Label: Apply a non-defective
replacement label.
5.2.5 Corroded or contaminated with foreign substance - Reject
5.3 Body:
5.3.1 Scratches or Scuff marks:
5.3.1.1 “A” Surface: Depth <= .005”; Length <= .500”; Max allowed per
surface = one.
5.3.1.2 “B” Surface: Acceptable as long as scratches and scuffs do not
expose base metal and dents are not present.
5.3.2 Dent: Reject
5.3.3 Missing or damaged Sleeve: Replace with a non-defective sleeve
5.4 Foot-ring:
5.4.1 Scratches or Scuff marks: Depth <= .005”; Length <= .500”; Max allowed per
surface = two.
5.4.2 Dent: No greater than .500” at greatest diameter point. No more than one
allowable. Dent should not inhibit proper alignment when attached to the
tank support bracket.
5.4.3 Bent: Reject
5.5 Warning Label (OPD Requirement):
5.5.1 Tanks should be visibly affixed with an Overfill Protection Devise (OPD)
Warning Label.
5.5.2 If any of the following criteria fail to be met, the LP Tank should be rejected
or affixed with a new label.
5.5.2.1 Label is missing from the tank.
5.5.2.2 Label contains missing or illegible verbiage.
