Living in the City
Growing up in a big city has been quite an adventure! I was born and raised right here in the heart of Downtown. My name is Jamie and I'm 12 years old, about to start 7th grade. Living downtown has been exciting, loud, crowded, and just a little bit crazy at times - but I wouldn't want it any other way!
Our apartment building is really tall, with 30 floors. We live on the 22nd floor, so the views are incredible. From my bedroom window, I can see the whole skyline lit up at night. The buildings almost seem to twinkle with all their lights and signs. During the day, I can watch the traffic and people down on the streets below. It's a bit like having a live ant farm to observe!
The best part about living downtown is that everything is so close and convenient. We don't even need a car since we can just walk most places. The grocery store is a block away, there are lots of restaurants and shops on every street, and I can get to school in 10 minutes on foot. On Saturdays, my friends and I
often go to the huge public library branch that's nearby. They have every book you could ever want!
There's also no shortage of things to do for fun in the city. We're just a few blocks from an amazing museum that has dinosaur fossils, ancient artifacts, a butterfly garden, and so much more. A new exhibit is always being added. My favorite is the science wing with all the cool experiments you can try. Whenever I get bored, I just beg my parents to take me to the museum and I'm entertained for hours.
Another awesome thing about the city is all the events that happen year-round. In the summer there are outdoor concerts and movie screenings in the park. The gardens are in full bloom and there are food trucks everywhere. Around the holidays, they have a massive Christmas tree lit up in the town square and carolers singing songs. You can go ice skating at the outdoor rink or see the windows decorated at all the big department stores. People come from all around to see the sights!
I also don't love how crowded and hectic it can get on the streets and sidewalks sometimes. You really have to pay attention to where you're going so you don't get bumped into or run over someone. The crowds are worst during rush hours when everyone is trying to get to work or get home. I've accidentally
stepped in my fair share of chewing gum globs on the sidewalk too. Gross!
My parents also get annoyed with how expensive it is to live downtown. Rent is super pricey since we're in a great location. Just paying for parking can cost a fortune if you need to go somewhere. Plus, everything from groceries to restaurants tends to have higher city prices. We try to save money by walking to free activities as much as possible.
Despite the drawbacks, I still love urban living and can't picture growing up anywhere else. There's just something special and exciting about being right in the center of a big, bustling city. Tall buildings loom over you in every direction. People are always rushing by on important business. There are flashing lights, honking horns, new sights and smells around every corner. You never quite know what you'll encounter next. One day it could be a movie filming right on your street!
I know the city isn't for everyone though. Some people prefer the peace and quiet of living out in the suburbs or a small town. To each their own! But for me, I really thrive on the energy and liveliness of the city. I just love the fast-paced environment and having so many opportunities right at my fingertips. From
world-class museums to beautiful city parks to delicious foods from every culture - this place has something for everyone.
Who knows, I may eventually want to experience a different way of living in the future. But for now, I'm a city kid through and through. This place helped shape who I am today and I have so many amazing memories here already. I wouldn't trade my urban childhood for anything! My Life in the Big City
Hey there! My name is Alex and I'm a 7th grader living right in the heart of New York City. I know a lot of kids my age probably dream of living out in the suburbs with big backyards
and quiet streets, but for me, there's nothing better than the hustle and bustle of city life!
Every morning I wake up to the sound of honking car horns and rumbling traffic outside my bedroom window. Instead of birds chirping, it's the roar of engines and the shouting of street vendors that rouses me from sleep. I actually find those familiar city sounds kind of comforting now. It lets me know that another exciting day in the Big Apple is beginning!
Getting ready for school is an adventure in itself. My mom and I have to leave the apartment super early because the subway gets so packed during rush hour. We squeeze ourselves into the crowded train cars like sardines in a can. I've gotten pretty good at holding my ground and not getting shoved around too much by all the business people rushing to their offices. A city kid has to be tough, you know?
The subway lets us off right nearby my school which takes up a whole city block. Can you believe over 4,000 students attend my middle school?! The hallways are always crammed with kids running every which way to get to their lockers and classrooms on time. You have to practice defensive walking skills so you don't get trampled!
At lunch time, the cafeteria is mayhem. Long lines snake around the food stations as hangry students wait impatiently for their pizza or burgers. Lunchroom aides have to yell at kids for cutting in line or throwing food across the room. It's pretty wild, but also oddly fun and exciting in a weird way. Definitely keeps you on your toes!
After school, my friends and I often go explore different parts of the city. One day we might visit the museums or central park, and the next we're checking out the street performers and food trucks in different ethnic neighborhoods. There's so much to see and do here, you can never get bored! We always have to be careful when we're out and about though, sticking to crowded areas and not going down deserted alleys or anything. Street smarts are a must for city kids.
My favorite thing to do is just walk around taking in all the sights and sounds. I love looking up at the towering skyscrapers, watching people from all walks of life rushing about, and observing the endless stream of taxis and cars creeping along the roads. I Live in the City
The city is an exciting place to live! My name is Emily and I'm a 7th grader. I've lived in downtown Chicago my whole life with my mom, dad, and little brother Michael. Living right in the middle of a huge city is really cool. There's always something new and fun to see or do.
Our apartment is on the 22nd floor of a tall building, so we have an amazing view looking out over the city. I love going up to the roof sometimes and taking in the incredible skyline. You can see the skyscrapers stretching up to the sky, with their bright windows twinkling at night. The city is like a concrete jungle full of gigantic steel and glass trees!
In the mornings, I wake up to the sound of traffic and car horns honking down on the street below. Our neighborhood is
always alive with the hustle and bustle of people hurrying to work or running errands. I don't mind the noise at all – it's just part of living in a vibrant city.
After school, there's a nice park just a couple blocks away where Michael and I meet up with friends. We'll toss a frisbee around, skateboard through the concrete plazas, or just hang out on the park benches and people watch. The best part is how easy it is to walk or take the train pretty much anywhere downtown. There are cool shops, museums, theaters, restaurants, and attractions everywhere you look. Or other times we'll just wander around doing "urban exploring" as my dad calls it. We'll duck into different ethnic neighborhoods and try delicious food from all over the world –
Mexican, Italian, Thai, Indian, you name it. The variety and mix of cultures in the city is endless.
On sunny days, we'll pack a picnic and take the train out to the beach stretching along Lake Michigan. It's crazy being able to go from the middle of a metropolitan city to swimming and playing in the sand in just a short ride. The city parks along the lakeshore are perfect for riding bikes, flying kites, or just relaxing and watching the sailboats drift by.
At night,the city takes on a different vibe with the glittering lights and lively nightlife scene. From our windows, I can see the towers illuminated against the night sky. My dad says the city "never sleeps" since there's something happening at all hours of the night.
Don't get me wrong – living in the city isn't perfect. The traffic can be a nightmare, everything is expensive, and there's a lot of noise and commotion everywhere you go. But to me, the energy and excitement of the city is all part of the fun.
