(Text 1)
M:What is your working time?
W:I work from 9 to 6 from Monday to Friday and on Saturday I work from 10 to 5.
(Text 2)
W:Sahara has been very sad these days.
M:What's the matter with her?
W:She's all right, but her grandma passed away.
(Text 3)
W:Front desk. Can I help you?
M:Yeah, hi. This is Room 201. Is your dining room still open?
W:I'm sorry, sir. The dining room closes at 10:30.
M:Thank you.
(Text 4)
W:John, good news. Here's a letter for you.
M:Thanks a lot.
W:It's always exciting to get letters.
M:That's true. But it's always tiring to write letters.
(Text 5)
W:I hope you remembered to pick up my clothes from the cleaners.
M:I couldn't go because my car wouldn't start.
(Text 6)
W:In order to reduce crimes in the city, I think we should employ more policemen.
M:I don't think so. Only education works. What are you doing here? You seem to be so happy.
W:Oh yeah, I'm stealing other people's crops.
M:How can you do that on the Internet?
W:Of course I can. You know, there is a special website here for you to grow and steal crops. It's great fun.
(Text 7)
W:Have you heard the city has passed a law against walking dogs in the streets?
M:Sure, it's published in the newspapers.
W:It means that dogs have to be kept inside all the time.
M:It's rather cruel, isn't it? We shouldn't be so cruel to dumb animals.
W:But dogs often leave a mess everywhere.
M:But owners can clean up the mess.
W:Would they?
M:Perhaps the best solution is to build a dog park. Then people can walk their dogs there.
W:Sounds too good to be realistic. The city is already too crowed without dogs.
(Text 8)
W:When are you going to take your vacation?
M:I've got a tenday vacation starting from July 25th.
W:Where are you going?
M:To Hawaii.
W:That sounds like a good place. Is your family going?
M:Yes. We plan to climb the mountains, go fishing, swimming, and wind surfing, just to relax. My wife is taking a whole bunch of books to read.
W:Your children must be all excited about it.
M:Yes, they are. They're already crossing out days on the calendar. Are you going to Europe again this summer?
W:No, not this time. We're going to visit some old friends in Egypt.
M:Are you going by ship or taking a flight?
W:We're going by air.
(Text 9)
Young people and older people do not always agree. They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way.
Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills. There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn phototaking or drawing. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his own way to pass his free time.
When people live together, they should have rules. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, “Why did it happen? What should we do about it?”
One of the teenag ers has said something about it, “You have to stop thinking only about yourself. You learn how to think about the group.”
(Text 10)
If someone offered to pay all my expenses for a month's holiday anywhere in the world, I would feel very surprised and very excited. I think I would decide to fly around the world and to visit three different countries. The countries I would visit would be Australia, the United States of America and Kenya. If I went to Australia, I would stay there for about two weeks. Before I went, I would write to one of my Australian friends. I would suggest that if it were possible, he should spend a week with me visiting Aboriginal tribes in the northern part of Australia. My friend could explain what we saw and he could translate what people said because he majored in Aboriginal Studies at Queensland University. If I went to the United States, I would
stay there for about a week. I expect I would start by visiting New York. I have heard that New York is a very exciting city. After I had stayed for two or three days in New York, I would fly to San Francisco. I hope I could stay with my friends who live there and I would visit the city and other parts of California. Finally, I would fly to Kenya where I would stay for about a week. There are three things I would like to do in Kenya. First, I hope I could visit the coast. Next, I would like to visit a game reserve. I imagine the wild animals of Africa — the lion, elephant and hippopotamus —are very exciting and beautiful. Finally, I would like to visit the Mountains of Kenya where you can see snow on the Equator. If someone offered me this money, I would be amazed. Unfortunately, I do not think this will ever happen and I doubt if I shall ever visit these countries.

As a young man, Al was a skilled artist, a potter with a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal (肠的) disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had
only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always
felt he was guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left
him a short time later, leaving him alone with his
sixyearold younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol for help. In time, Al became an alcoholic.
As the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he possessed — his land, house, etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Al's death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure!”
As time went by, I began to revalue my earlier rough judgment. I knew Al's now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, and most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and love had to come from somewhere.
I hadn't heard Ernie talk much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, “As a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘Love you, son.’”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind and loving father, and left behind his best love.

We all know that exercise is good for your health, but some kinds of exercise may be better than others.
Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running also may help you live longer. Researchers say it is not important how far you run. It also does not matter how fast or even how often you run. As advertisements for the running shoe Nike say, “Just do
it.”
Recently, researchers studied more than 55,000 a dults. About onefourth of the adults reported running regularly. The study found these runners were considerably less likely than nonrunners to die of any form of disease, including heart disease. In fact, the runners usually lived three years longer tha n the nonrunners.
This study lasted 15 years. During that time, more than 3,400 of the individuals died. About 1,200 of the deaths were linked to heart disease, a heart attack or a stroke. Compared to nonrunners, runners showed 30 percent lower risk of death by any causes. Also, runners compared to nonrunners showed 45 percent lower risk of death by cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
The runners in the study ran between 10 and 16 kilometers per hour. Slower runners, and those who only ran once or twice a week, were helped nearly as much as those who ran faster and further. Researchers looked at the running over time and found that persistent runners — over six years — showed the biggest benefits.
To stay healthy, doctors suggest that adults up to age 65 do 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) exercise every week. They say these individuals need 75 minutes of energetic exercise, like running, every week for good health.

What do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common? That's the places where students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to function efficiently.
The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas
Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic
studies, a person should “spend two hours on exercise
every day, for health must not be sacrificed (牺牲) for
learning. A str ong body makes the mind strong.”
It turns out Jefferson_was_on_to_something. A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn't exercise. This and other evidence suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity.
But experts today do not demand 2 hours of daily exercise. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people get at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
Walking, jogging and swimming are easy ways to increase your heart rate and improve health. Exercise can also help lower blood pressure and reduce stress. For
women, exercise that makes the body and bones bear weight —like walking or running — may reduce the risk of osteoporosis (骨质疏松) later in life.
You'll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater selfconfidence. This may make it easier for you to participate in class and help you perform well in academic and social situations.
