Limiting kids' recreational(消遣的) screen time to less than two hours a day, along with enough sleep and physical activity, is associated with improved cognition(认知), according to a study published in The Lancet Child&Adolescent Health.
The study included about 4,500 US children aged 8 to 11 and measured their habits against the Canadian24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth. It found that 51% of the children got the recommended(建议) nine to eleven hours of uninterrupted sleep per night, 37% met the recreational screen time limit of two hours or less per day, while 18% met the physical activity recommendation of at least 60 minutes of accumulated physical activity a day. Only 5% of the children in the study met all three recommendations; 30% met none at all.
The researchers found that as each recommendation was met by a participant, there was a positive association with global cognition, which includes memory, attention, processing speed and language. Those who met all three had the most "superior" global cognition, followed by those meeting the sleep and screen time recommendation and finally the screen time recommendation alone, according to the study.
Other organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics have guidelines in place to help with the management of children's screen time. The organization suggests putting realistic rules or limits in place for how long your children are on their screens, knowing who they are talking to and what they are doing. The amount of recommended screen time depends on the age of the child. Besides, parents should also make sure to encourage physical activity and have bedroom rules such as creating "tech-free zones".
(1)Who are the target readers of this passage?

(3)According to the passage, which of the following might contribute least to cognition?
A.The screen time limit.
B.Sleep hours.
C.The physical activity time.
D.Sleep hours and the screen time limit.
(4)Why does the American organization suggest creating "tech-free zones"?
A.To make sure children have enough physical playtime.
B.To make sure children have enough sleep time.
C.To make sure children have recreational time.
D.To protect children against radiation.
【答案】(1)C
(2)D
(3)C

In New York City public schools, 176 different languages are spoken among the more than 1 million students. For 160,000 children, English is not their first language. New York's Department of Education makes learning better for these students by providing dual-language(双语) programmes.
Students are taught in two languages, English and another one, like Russian or Chinese. Maths, social studies, science and all other regular courses are taught in both languages so that they could learn about the culture of the other countries.
Milady Baez is Deputy Chancellor of English Language Learners and Student Support. She says," The jobs of the future require that our students know more than one language. They are going to be travelling abroad; they are going to be communicating with people from all over the world. This will open doors for them."
Middle-schoolers might not have jobs on their minds yet. For Kequing Jaing, she likes keeping up her first language, Mandarin. "It makes me feel that I am home because I can speak in Chinese and learn in Chinese, while learning in English. So it makes me feel better and makes me understand more about the task I'm learning.
Anastasia Hudikova came to the United States when she was 2 years old. She says the Russian-English programme keeps her connected to her heritage and her parents.
The New York schools also offer dual-language programmes in seven other languages: Arabic, French, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Korean, Polish and Spanish. There are plans to add even more languages in the future. While these dual-language programmes are popular, educators in the US say that teaching English comes first. The US English wants to make English the official language of the United States.

Parents do not owe (欠) their children a college education. If they can afford it, they can certainly send them to a good university. But they needn't feel guilty if they can't. When children grow up and want to get married, their parents do not owe them an apartment. They do not have the duty to look after their grandchildren, either. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor, not an obligation.
Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.
One of their obligations is to give their children a personal worth. Children who are always made to feel stupid and unworthy, constantly compared with brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins will become so unsure, so afraid of failing that they won't try at all. Of course they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but it's often better to let children learn their mistakes by themselves in time. All their parents should do is to trust them, respect them, understand them and give them chances to try and fail. They must learn to stand failure. When criticisms (批评) are really needed, they should be balanced with a smile and a kiss. That is the way children learn. Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law. The best way to teach such values is by deed. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving. No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.
(1)The author thinks parents ________.
A.should send their children to college
B.should support their children after they get married
C.need to buy an apartment for their children
D.needn't feel guilty if they can't send their children to universities
(2)What does the underlined word "obligation" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Right.
B.Promise.
C.Duty.
D.Excuse.
(3)According to the passage, what should parents do when children make mistakes?
A.Understand them and tell them not to do that again.
B.Let them learn the mistakes by themselves in time.
pare them with brighter brothers or sisters.
D.Correct their mistakes immediately.
(4)What does the author mainly talk about in this passage?
A.The duties of parents.
B.The best way to teach children.
C.The reason why children feel stupid and unworthy.
D.The reason why parents owe their children something.

根据第一段中的“Parents do not owe (欠)their children a college education...But they needn't feel guilty if they can't.”

根据第一段中的“If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor, not an obligation. ”如果他们想这样做,就必须把它看作一种恩惠,而不是义务,这一句中的“favor”意为“恩惠、帮忙”相反意思应为“义务、责任”,所以可以判断“obligation”应是“义务”之意,同时“obligation”和前一句“They do not have the duty to look after their grandchildren, either.”

根据第三段中的“Of course they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but it's often better to let children learn their mistakes by themselves in time.”

根据第一段中的“Parents do n ot owe (欠)their children a college education...”从父母送子女上大学,帮忙买房子或照看孙辈等琐事引入主题,说明这些并不是父母真正的职责;以及第三段中的“One of their obligations is to give their children a personal worth.” 他们的义务之一是给孩子们个人的价值和最后一段中的“Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives.”

故选A。

Some African schools are adding programs that teach what officials are calling "soft skills" to students. Soft skills are personal qualities that help a person relate effectively to others. Officials say this kind of training can help students succeed in the job market and in life.
The training is being offered at the St. Bernadette Kamonyi Secondary School in Kigali, Rwanda. For weeks, its students have been visiting neighborhood businesses. The goal of these field trips is for the young people to learn what is necessary to secure a job.
For the secondary school students, this information is important. In a few months, they'll complete their studies and try their best to find work. One of the Rwandan students is 22-year-old Aminadab Niyitegeka. He says he will look for any job available. He hopes that what he learns in his work readiness class will help. Traditionally, secondary schools in Africa have spent more time on subjects like mathematics and science, largely ignoring areas like public speaking and teamwork. But that is changing. Schools are exploring new teaching models to offer soft skills and professional training. It is part of an effort to prepare students to become better communicators, problem solvers and citizens (公民).
Rwanda has started a work readiness training program called Akazi Kanoze Access. It means "work well done" in Kinyarwanda, the official language of Rwanda. The program has trained more than 20,000 students to help make them more appealing to employers.
Emmanuel Ntagungira is a teacher and works as a trainer for Akazi Kanoze Access, He often visits employers who have given jobs to high schools. The employers are very happy because the graduates are ready to work. He says he hopes the program will help lower unemployment, which stands at over 13 percent nationwide. He also explains that the graduates have a healthy mindset and employers are satisfied with the job they've been doing.

Food experts say washing could spread the germs on your turkey in the kitchen sink or nearby food. But it's been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop rinsing (冲洗)off raw poultry. Germs that can make people sick are common in the guts of healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on raw turkey and chicken. The assumption is that nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough cooking will kill the bacteria.
The do — not — wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn't caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a study author and food safety expert at North Carolina State
University, said the instinct to wash raw poultry goes back at least decades when people relied more on visual clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile, washing hands and surfaces are also important.
But food preparation is a complicated act, and germs from poultry can be spread even if it's not washed, especially when birds are removed from packaging.
The USDA-funded study stresses that point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a harmless strain of E. coli (大肠杆菌)and watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.
To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees. Even after the meal is cooked, you aren't out of the danger zone. To keep turkeys and other leftovers safe, experts say they should be refrigerated after two hours.
(1)People don't accept USDA's advice because____.
A.the advice is relatively new
B.cleaning seems more trustworthy
C.cooks clean the turkey before cooking it
D.heat can kill most germs and no one eats raw food
(2)What can be concluded from Paragraph 4?
A.Food packages carry germs.
B.Hands and surfaces are easy to get E. coli.
C.Germs from a turkey can be spread whether it is washed or not.
D.Multiple methods should be applied to food to get rid of germs.
(3)Which way may help to cook a turkey safely?
A.Rinse off the turkey before it is heated.
B.Keep the turkey away from the lettuce and refrigerator.
C.Wash hands and packages before taking out the turkey.
e a thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey.
(4)From which section of a magazine is the text probably taken?
A.Culture.

根据第二段中的“The do —not —wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn't caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman.”

根据第四段中的“Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.”

根据最后一段中的“To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a t hermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees.”

It has always been thought that alcohol causes people to put on weight because it contains a lot of sugar, but new research suggests a glass a day cold form part of a diet. Looking at past studies they found that, while heavy drinkers do put on weight; those who drink in moderation can actually lose weight.
A spokesman for the research team at Navarro University in Spain says, "Light to moderate alcohol intake, especially of wine, may be more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain." The International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research reviewed the findings and agreed with most of the conclusions, particularly that data do not clearly indicate if moderate drinking increases weight.
Boston University's Dr. Harvey Finkel found that the biologic mechanisms(生物学机制) relating alcohol to changes in body weight are not properly understood. His team pointed out the strong protective effects of moderate drinking on the risk of getting conditions like diabetes(糖尿病), which relate to increasing obesity. Some studies suggest that even very obese people may be at lower risk of diabetes if they are moderate drinkers.
The group says alcohol provides calories that are quickly absorbed into the body and are not stored in fat, and that this process could explain the differences in its effects from those of other。
