It can reveal (揭示) laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal, The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement , appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal , however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t? To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of subjects. Because of this, you might expect the book to cover a variety of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold试卷第2页,共9页and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters. On the whole, Brooks’s story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expec t, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’s attempt to translate his tale into science.1、The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to ________. A .show the value of Brooks’s new book B .show where science can be appliedC .remind the reader of the importance of scienceD .explain why many writers use science in their works2、According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book? A .Its clear writing. B .Its convincing points. C .Its strong characters. D .Its strong basis.3、What is the author’s general attitude towards the book? A .Cautious. B .Critical.C .Contradictory(矛盾的).D .Supportive.Our room was on the second floor but you could still hear the roar of the ocean and see the stars at night. I used to take long walks along the water. The food in town was wonderful and the people were very friendly. The area was very quiet and peaceful, and fairly deserted. The last evening of our vacation, however, we all heard strange footsteps following closely behind us as we were walking up to our room in the holiday centre. We turned around and noticed a fairly young man moving very rapidly across the beach and getting closer to us. He was tall and wore a baseball cap. We could n’t see his face and he was approaching us very rapidly. The man’s actions made my dad very nervous. Dad warned us that we’d better try to试卷第3页,共9页make it to our hotel room as quickly as possible. I didn’t like my dad’s voice; I could hear fear in it. It was late and we were all alone. We didn’t have any cell phones on us. I never saw Dad as worried as he was then and I knew that something was terribly wrong. The sense of fear started to overwhelm Mom and me. We had had such a good time in town. Now, the night was rapidly turning into a dangerous situation. We could hear the man’s footsteps getting closer. Dad’s face was almost pale. The so -called intruder (侵入者) had moved nearer and nearer when all of a sudden, the nearby vending (自动贩卖) machine started going crazy and spitting out cans of soda! The noise actually scared the intruder and he ran out of sight. My parents were shaking, but we all turned around to see who had put money into the vending machine downstairs, and actually saved us, but no one was around at all. Not a soul. It’s one vacation I will never forget. 4、Where did the author spend her vacation?A .Near a lake.B .At the seaside.C .In a village.D .In a mountain. 5、What does the underlined word “overwhelm” in Paragraph 2 mean? A .move. B .impress. C .control. D .excite. 6、What helped them get out of the trouble? A .Their quick action. B .Other people’s kind he lp. C .The young man’s warning.D .The noise from the vending machine.According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality.Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal (胎儿的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up (蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these试卷第4页,共9页people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep. “The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for you rself,” according to Phipps.Yearner (向往) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style —on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.Perhaps the most peculiar (奇怪的) of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.Inconclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: “A good night’s sleep set you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.” 7、Which sleeping position indicates that the sleeper tends to seek perfection? A .The fetal position. B .The log position. C .The yearner position. D .The freefaller position. 8、Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A .A good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day B .Your personality depends a lot on how you sleep at night C .How you sleep at night affects what you do the next day D .Which sleeping position helps you sleep comfortably二、完形填空(题型注释)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A 、B 、C 、D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解Every year migratory(迁徙的) bats travel from Mexico to Bracken Cave, where they spend the summer consuming insects that would otherwise hungrily eat common food crops. But the bats have been showing up far earlier than they did two decades ago.In a study, scientists at Rothamsted Research, an agricultural laboratory in England, used radar data from 160 U.S. weather stations to analyze activity in the Texas bat colony from 1995 through 2017. They discovered the creatures were leaving their winter quarters in Mexico earlier and reproducing sooner. They were also astonished to find increasing numbers of bats overwintering(过冬) at Bracken Cave instead of heading back to their cold weather quarters in Mexico. Overwintering is a sign that warmer temperatures change the bats' annual rhythms, Rothamsted biologist Phillip Stepanian says.A separate study of migratory bats in Indiana, published last year, found that temperature variations affected arrival and departure times—likewise hinting at the potential influence of climate change. Joy O'Keefe, a biology professor at Indiana State University and co-author of that study, says early arrival at their summer habitats(栖息地) could expose these bats to cold snaps(寒流), and they could freeze to death.Joy O'Keefe and her colleagues also found that changing bat migration times can also clash with rainfall patterns. Many insects that bats eat breed in seasonal lakes and puddles. If the bats arrive too early to benefit from summer rainfall and the resulting abundance of insects they may struggle to feed their pups(幼崽) or skip reproduction altogether, O'Keefe says. She fears this shift could cause Midwestern bats to decrease toward extinction, which would be bad news for humans. "Declines in bat populations could have severe effects for crop success," she says, adding that bats also "control significant disease vectors, such as mosquitoes."However, scientists are not certain that climate change alone is causing the Bracken Cave bat colony to migrate earlier. They have found a direct link between seasonal temperatures and bird migration, but bats are also influenced by factors such as changes in wind speed and direction. And there are other complications. “Bats are mysterious little animals th at move mostly at night and are difficult to observe and track," Stepanian says. "We have this conceptual picture of what might be happening, but really tying it to the cause is the next step."(1)Scientists at Rothamsted Research found that _________.A. bats prefer colder weatherB. bats delay their reproductionC. warming affects bat migrationD. radar can be used to observe bats(2)Joy O'Keefe discovered that _________.A. bats are used to living in rainfall seasonsB. bats' earlier migration might harm farmingC. insects' reproduction helps to spread diseaseD. insects shortage makes bats reproduce earlier(3)What does the last paragraph want to tell us?A. Wind speed and direction affect bats.B. It is difficult to observe and track bats.C. Climate change makes bats migrate earlier.D. Further research on the cause is necessary.(4)What is the best title for the passage?A. Bats' habitatsB. Endangered batsC. Bats' scheduleD. 2021-2022学年浙江省高二上学期期中考试英语试卷含答案
浙江省2021-2022学年高二上学期期中考试英语试卷AThe other day a big, ugly, black bat found its way to the bathroom of my house and hung upside down, over the toilet bowl.As "the man of the house",I was asked to rid the house of the awful creature.I grabbed a pillow and held the broom.I quickly opened the bathroom door and threw the pillow at the bat.It didn't move. Then that old feeling started to come over me.It was the same feeling I experienced when I was sent down the stairs in the middle of the night to see what made a noise. The feeling can be summed up in one word—trapped. All men,I think, sometimes have had that feeling of being trapped in some male role.It may be something as simple as having to carve the chicken before it is served,or having to pretend that you know something about car engines when the car won't start. However, women nowadays seem to have the freedom to be themselves. They can repair cars or be firefighters.Yet menappear to be more afraid to do something different. It's as if being a man is not what you are,but what you do and the way you do it.As I came towards the fierce and frightening bat,I wondered what would happen if I had simply told my wife that I won't do it—that she could get it out,or else call someone in themorning. But I couldn't do that!I am the man!I slowly opened the window and closed the toilet bowl cover.I then, carefully, lifted the broom over my head and swept the bat out thewindow.Just like that,it was gone.My wife was so pleased and in the morning,my son thought I was a hero. They asked me how I had got rid of the bat.I started to tell them—but then stopped.A man doesn't talk of such things.1.Why does the author mention the old feeling in Paragraph 1?______A.To recall the old days.B.To show his fear of darkness.C.To predict his fight with the bat.D.To highlight the situation of being trapped.2.What does the author mean by mentioning women's freedom in Paragraph 2?______A.Men are forced to bear household burdens.B.Men have to live up to social expectations.C.Women are free to choose their jobs.D.Women are equal to men in workplaces.3.The last sentence of the passage implies that the author ______ .A.believes silence is gold C.will do what he has to doB.feels proud of himselfD.will be what he wants to be BCats communicate a variety of messages using cats' body language.Examples include arching (弓起)their backs as a signal of fear or attack, and slowly blinking(眨)their eyes to signal relaxation.Mouth open and no teeth showed suggests a feeling of playfulness.A cat whichchooses to lie on its back shows happiness, trust and comfort.Cats show dissatisfaction bymoving their ears back, equal to a human frown. As is the case with dogs,a twitching(抽动)tail can mean a little anger while a tail held high suggests confidence.Cats will twitch their tails when hunting or angry, while larger twitching suggests displeasure. They may also twitch their tails when playing.A tail held high is a sign of happiness,or can be used as a greeting towards humans or other cats(usually close relatives)while half-raised shows less pleasure, and unhappiness is expressed with a tail held low. Some characteristic signals, however, are often misunderstood. It is important to keep in mind that each cat may show its feelings with different body language. For instance,a cat rubbing its body along an arm or a leg of its owner is not only a way in which to attract attentionand, perhaps,a way to ask for food;it is also a way of "marking" its owner as its ually a cat with its tail held high and twitching shows excitement, but this is often mistaken for anger. Many people fail or are too slow to understand the silent body language of cats. And they may have the false impression that cats are cold-hearted,unfaithful or not clever. To understandcats, people must observe a cat closely and learn what its body signals tell them.4.Which cats' body language shows that a cat is relaxed?______A.Lying on its stomach.C.Holding its tail high.B.Blinking its eyes slowly.D.Moving its ears back.5.According to the passage,a cat will twitch its tail EXCEPT ______ .A.when it feels sleepy C.when it feels angryB.when it is hunting D.when it is playing6.The last paragraph intends to tell us ______ .A.many people often have wrong opinions on catsB.it is not easy to understand cats' body languageC.every cat has its own special body languageD.we should learn more about cats' body languageCAlbert Einstein single-handedly changed the universe 100 years ago.For centuries,IsaacNewton's straightforward formulas ruled the universe— or at least how physicists thoughtabout it.Any object with mass caused an attractive force on any other object with mass;the bigger the masses, and the closer the two objects, the stronger the attraction.Simple.But in1915,Einstein suggested that things were a bit trickier.Even Einstein had to labor for almost a decade to formulate the complex mathematicalrelationships behind his work, his own version of gravity:the general theory ofrelativity.Gravitational attraction,it turned out,was due to nothing less than the bending of the space.A massive object actually bends the 3-D structure of the space around it,taking anysmaller objects in the close area along for the ride. This results in familiar phenomena likeorbiting moons, planets and stars,as well as some stranger effects like cosmic ripples(宇宙涟漪)and black holes. And,surprise,it turns out that Einstein was right. But,even after a century of confirmation, physicists' growing technological signposts mean they are still eager to push the theory, anxious to see if it holds up.The rest of his life,Einstein tried to combine all the known forces of the universe(including his version of gravity)into one simple set of rules, but the answer fled him. Some 60 years after his death, scientists still hope to unify the forces.Testing relativity might just turn up a key clue in the quest.Physicists may be able to do what Einstein never could if they find out where, ifever, nature begins to disagree with general relativity.Whatever it was that fueled Einstein's insights into the universe— whether it was an extraordinary brain or just the way he looked atthe world— his work has lasted at least 100 years undefeated.Maybe it always will. But perhaps,in the next 100,someone else will have changed the universe once more.7.What does the underlined word "unify" mean in the last paragraph?______A.ceaseB.integrateC.displayD.adopt8.Where might you read this passage?______A.in a story book C.in a journalB.in a fiction D.in a recipe9.According to the text, which of the following phenomena is not caused by gravity?______A.black holes C.cosmic ripplesB.orbiting satellites D.wormholes10.What can we learn from the passage?______A.Einstein successfully explained his version of gravity on the shoulder of Newton.B.There's no chance that anyone could do better than Einstein in a century.C.The closer two objects get,the less the attraction will be.D.General relativity is already out-dated.As the world enters the second year of the pandemic(疫情),two crises are unfolding. The more urgent and visible one is in poor countries like India, where an increase of COVID-19 cases is threatening to overwhelm the state.India is recording more than 350,000 cases aday, and many more than that are thought to be going undetected. (1) Oxygen supplies at Indian hospitals are running far short of what is needed, causing numerous deaths.(2) That is long COVID(新冠后遗症),which is becoming apparent in rich countries likeAmerica,Britain, and Israel that have largely vaccinated their way out of the pandemic, butwhich will affect poor ones,too.Post-COVID syndrome(综合征),to give it its formal name, isa set of symptoms affecting any part of the body. (5)A.The other crisis is more unnoticeable.B.Half a million people in Britain have had long COVID for more than six months.C.Evidence is mounting that long COVID is a real threat to global health.D.Over a third said it had weighed on their finances.E.People are not aware of the long COVID.F.The suffering is extreme.G.Three stand out:breathlessness, fatigue and "brain fog".11. 1. The boy sat on his chair, with his hands above the keyboard. He thought about what to write. He recalled that the competition deadline was merely a week away. But he still had not even started on his piece. He looked at the brochure again."WRITING COMPETITION! " the title read. His mom had encouraged him to enter the writing competition, and now he was taking it on as his personal task for the holidays. As the boy reflected on his previous writing efforts,he realized how hopeless his task of winning was. Every story he ever wrote was based on other stories. He has little imagination, and unfortunately, imagination was the key to writing.Suddenly,he had a brainwave. This time,he came up with an original and imaginative story. The words shot towards him like a storm of leaves. Words were coming easily, flowing through him, faster than he could type. He typed faster than he ever had before. He continuedto type, amazed how easy writing this story was. The boy could not stop writing. He looked at the word count and saw the number "248" staring right back at him. He was not even halfway yet. Then he heard his mother's call of saying time for bed. He continued writing thepiece, ignoring her. He had to make up for the time he had lost in thinking about a topic to write. Finally,he finished. The word count now read "498"."Perfect," he thought,"just under the word limit." He knew this was the story that would win. He went to the website and searched for the competition. He found the page but therewas no "Enter" button.Confused,he then re-read the page again. It read COMPETITION CLOSED.(1)What caused the boy to take part in the writing competition?________A.A new computer.B.The prize money.C.His own interest.D.His mom's encouragement..(2)How did the boy finish his earlier writing?________A.His mom helped him.B.He copied others' ideas.C.His friends assisted him.D.He used his imagination..(3)Which might be the maximum word limit for each entry?________A.100.B.250.C.500.D.1,000..2. Looking through a magazine in a waiting room recently, I came across an article with the title "My top five most precious possessions". It was just a few lines of text with pictures, but it caught my imagination. It's interesting how inanimate(无生命的) objects can take on such significance and become woven(编织) into a person's, and sometimes a whole family's, life history.Anyway, the article had me considering what my most precious possessions are. It was difficult to choose only five, but here are mine:An old cardboard box filled with my children's baby photos.A yellow pocket-sized birthday book of special things(poems, pictures of flowers and trees, etc) given to me by my dad when I was probably about seven or eight years old.A 21st birthday card from my mum. In it she's written her congratulations, her love, and her hopes for my future. She died not long after, when I was in my early twenties.A few ancient but very beautiful botany books that were once my greatgrandmother's. She was a botanist in a time when it was relatively unusual for women to be qualified in this field and I think she was probably a remarkable and very interesting woman. I'd like to have known her.A brooch(胸针)left to me by my much-loved grandmother. It was given to my great grandmother by my great grandfather on his return from World War Ⅰ. It is not worth anything in terms of money. However,it not only stands for a link between four generations of women, but it is also a reminder of one young man's return from World War Ⅰ.How about you? I'd love to hear what you feel are your most precious possessions.(1)What made the writer have the idea of writing the passage?________A. Her love for her relatives.B. Her rich imagination about the objects.C. An article in a magazine.D. Some pictures in an article..(2)According to the passage, the writer________.A. lost her mother at the age of 26B. was a mother of several childrenC. got the yellow birthday book at 8D. studied botany well when she was young.(3)The writer considered her great grandmother remarkable and interesting becauseshe________.A. wrote a large number of botany booksB. left the writer some ancient but beautiful botany booksC. was unusually famous for her achievementsD. could become a botanist in the special time.(4)In the writer's opinion, something that is thought to be the most precious should be able to________.A. change a person's and even the whole family's life historyB. have a great effect on one person's lifeC. remind somebody of his or her close relativesD. show a person's love and respect for his or her relatives.3. What will man be like in the future - in 5000 or even 50, 000 years from now? We can only make guesses,of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an obvious example. Man,even five hundred years ago,was shorter than he is today. Now,on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time,so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again,in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so,we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity. As time goes on,however,we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact,we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These,as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same,in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.(1)The change in man's size of forehead will probably be because________.A.he makes use only 20% of the brain's capacityB.his brain has grown larger over the past centuriesC.the other 80% of his brain will grow in due timeD.he will use his brain more and more as time goes on.(2)What will be true about a human being in the future?________A.He will be hairless because hair is no longer useful.B.He will have smaller eyes and will wear better glasses.C.His fingers will grow weaker because he won't have to make use of them.D.He will think and feel in a different way..(3)It is implied that________.A.human beings will become less attractive in the futureB.less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degenerationC.human beings hope for a change in the future lifeD.future life is always predictable.第二节(共5 个小题;每小题2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Empty! Searching for the watch anxiously, I was about to burst into tears when I spotted something shiny. The golden case of the watch was forced open. The glass was cracked into several pieces and some Roman numbers were displaced. Seeing the mess, I was frozen with misery. Just at that moment, a group of boys led by Crawley passed. They laughed loudly with Crawley screaming words like “What a broken watch!” I shook my fist tightly and glared at them.Paragraph 2:“That’s not the right way. Patience, Peter. Patience,” a voice echoed in my ears after the boys left. Though anger, embarrassment and sadness seized me, I managed to take a deep breath and forced myself to calm down. Wiping away my tears, I wrapped the watch with great care. Grandfather was right! I shouldn’t have pleased the boys in such a hasty and foolish way. “Time will tell everything—whether it’s study or friendship!” Realizing the meaning of the gift, I promised this broken watch would serve as a constant reminder, inspiring me to be patient.听力材料Text 1M: Excuse me. 一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解The term "smiling depression" —appearing happy to others while actually suffering depressive symptoms—has become increasingly popular. In fact, many people who experience a low mood and a loss of pleasure in activities manage to hide their condition in this way. And these people might be particularly easy to suicide. While smiling depression is not a technical term that psychologists use,it is certain to be depressed and manage to successfully mask the symptoms. The closest technical term for this condition is "atypical depression: It can be very hard to spot people suffering depression because they may seem like they don't have a reason to be sad —they have a job, an apartment and maybe even children or a partner. They smile when you greet them and can carry pleasant conversations. In short, they often put on a mask to the outside world while leading seemingly normal and active lives. Inside, however, they often feel hopeless and down, sometimes even having thoughts about ending it all.People with smiling depression put on a happy face to the outside world, but they can experience a lift in their mood as a result of positive occurrences in their lives. Other symptoms of this condition include overeating, feeling a sense of heaviness in the arms and legs and being easily hurt by criticism or rejection. They are also more likely to feel depressed in the evening and feel the need to sleep longer than usual. With other forms of depression, however, your mood might be worse in the morning and you might feel the need for less sleep than you are normally used to.So how can they break this circle? A starting point needs to be known that this condition actually exists and that it's serious. Only when we stop ignoring our problems because we think they're not serious enough can we start making an actual difference. Then we can find purpose by taking the attention away from ourselves and placing it onto something else. Feeling that our lives matter is finally what gives us purpose and meaning —and this can make a significant difference for our mental health and well-being.(1)What do we know about people suffering smiling depression?A. They are wearing masks all day.B. They are difficult to get along with.C. They lead an abnormal life actually.D. Most of them commit suicide.(2)What does the underlined word "atypical" in paragraph 2 mean?A. representativeB. commonC. hiddenD. formal(3)Compared with smiling depression, people suffering other depressions .A.may feel sleeplessB.feel more depressed in the eveningC.are tired of heaviness in the armsD.may eat more food(4)What can we do to overcome smiling depression?A.Never talk about smiling depression and ignore its existence.B.Admit the condition and pay attention to ourselves.C.Value the importance of our life and enjoy it.D.Find out the problem and place it onto somebody else.【答案】(1)C(2)C(3)A(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了“微笑抑郁”这个名字的来历,相关的症状,以及克服这种抑郁症的方法。

2016-2017学年高二上期中考试英语试卷(解析版)一、阅读理解1、阅读理解According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at nightactually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality.Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in thefetal (胎儿的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up (蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake upstiffer than when they went to sleep.“The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and youcan become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,” acco rdingto Phipps.Yearner (向往) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleepin this style—on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if theyare either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typicallytheir own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. Thesepeople often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.Perhaps the most peculiar (奇怪的) of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down witharms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have littlecontrol over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but alsothe least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.Inconclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: “A good night's sleepset you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how wefeel when we wake.”根据短文内容,选择最佳答案,并将选定答案的字母标号填在题前括号内。

The more we curl up (蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep.“The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,” according to Phipps.Yearner (向往) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style—on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.Inconclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: “A good night's sleep set you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.”根据短文内容,选择最佳答案,并将选定答案的字母标号填在题前括号内。

Iused to take long walks along the water. We couldn't see his face and he was approaching us very rapidly. The man's actions made my dad very nervous. Dad warned us that we'd better try to make it to our hotel room as quickly as possible. I didn't like my dad's voice; I could hear fear in it. It was late and we were all alone. We didn't have any cell phones on us. I never saw Dad as worried as he was then and I knew that something was terribly wrong. The sense of fear started to overwhelm Mom and me. We had had such a good time in town. Now, the night was rapidly turning into a dangerous situation. We could hear the man's footsteps getting closer. Dad's face was almost pale. The so-called intruder (侵入者) had moved nearer and nearer when all of a sudden, the nearby vending (自动贩卖) machine started going crazy and spitting out cans of soda! The noise actually scared the intruder and he ran out of sight. My parents were shaking, but we all turned around to see who had put money into the vending machine downstairs, and actually saved us, but no one was around at all. Not a soul. It's one vacation I will never forget.根据短文内容,选择最佳答案,并将选定答案的字母标号填在题前括号内。

It can reveal (揭示) laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there's always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal, The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious andserious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren't?To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of subjects. Because of this, you might expect the book to cover a variety of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader's attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters. On the whole, Brooks's story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks's attempt to translate his tale into science.根据短文内容,选择最佳答案,并将选定答案的字母标号填在题前括号内。
