Owls and Larks(猫头鹰与云雀)1 In this article, we look at the importance of sleep for learning. Most healthy adults need eight or more hours of sleep. But why do we need sleep in the first place? We need sleep for the brain to get a chance to rebuild memories stored during the day and associate these with previously learned things. If this process is interrupted by, say, the sound of an alarm clock, it may not be as effective. So if your sleep is cut short by the alarm clock, how damaging is it? The truth is that it's difficult to predict, as so much depends on how much sleep your body actually needs on that particular occasion.2 The popular belief that people are naturally either larks (early risers) or owls is false. The reason why people tend to be one or the other has more to do with lifestyle, age, and personality. Many people who appear to be early birds may have just become so through habit, for example, parents with very young children. Teenagers can have difficulty falling asleep until late at night and then they naturally have problems getting up the following morning.3 The main reason why owls are owls is that they tend to spend their time over a book, movie, or computer game till the early hours of the morning. They enjoy the quiet of the night when they can pursue their passion. On the other hand, larks can make better use of early morning hours where they can study in quiet at the time when their brains are most refreshed. So which is better for learning-an owl's or a lark's lifestyle? The simple truth is that it is more complex than simply being one or the other. Leading a well-balanced life in terms of work and play and sleeping enough to bring maximum refreshment is probably the secret.4 As for naps, experts on insomnia(失眠)argue against taking naps, as these may keep people up at night. If your nap lasts only five minutes to half an hour and does not affect your ability to fall asleep in the night, it will probably help you be more alert in evening hours. However, if you are having problems getting to sleep at night, it's not only naps that you should avoid. Try not to drink a lot of alcohol, take nicotine(尼古丁), do mentally intense activities like preparing for exams or doing exercise in the evening. Some people swear that drinking coffee never stops them from sleeping like a log, whereas others will never go near the stuff for fear of being awake all night. However, the best advice for most is to avoid it in the evening, and if you drink coffee before a nap, remember you are likely to awaken as soon as the caffeine starts kicking in.23 Paragraph 1 _________24 Paragraph 2 _________25 Paragraph 3 _________26 Paragraph 4 _________A What should we avoid?B How much sleep do we need?C Which is better, being an owl or a lark?D Why do we need sleep?E What makes people owls or larks?F What helps us fall asleep?27 Sleep helps brain to _________.28 Parents with very young children tend to _________29 A good lifestyle means one can _________.30 It is good advice for most people to _________.A sleep enough to bring most refreshmentB keep away from coffee in the eveningC stay up till the early hours of the morningD get up quite earlyE store memories in the brainF rebuild memories stored during the day第4部分:阅读理解(第3l~45题,每题3分,共45分)下面有3篇短文,每篇短文后有5道题。

Pupils who sat exams in 2006-2007 had been on the new diet for at least 12 months, and the researchers found that the number of pupils reaching higher levels of achievement had clearly risen. The study also compared the results of the school in Greenwich with those of pupils of the same age in seven other London areas who did not eat the meals created by Oliver.” 可知ISER机构不仅研究了格林尼治吃Oliver做的更健康食物的小学生的学业成绩,而且研究了该地区没有吃Oliver做的更健康食物的小学生的学业成绩。

More about Alzheimer's DiseaseScientists have developed skin tests that may be used in the future to identify people with Alzheimer's disease1 and may ultimately allow physicians to predict who is at risk of getting this neurological disorder.' The only current means of diagnosing the disease in a living patient is a long and expensive series of tests that eliminate every other cause of dementia." Since Alois Alzheimer described the disease nearly a century ago, people have been trying to find a way to accurately diagnose it in its early stages2," said Patricia Grady, acting director3 of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, Maryland. "This discovery, if confirmed, could prove a big step forward in our efforts to deal with and understand the disease. "Alzheimer's is the single greatest cause4 of mental deterioration in older people, affecting between 2. 5 million and 4 million people in the United States alone5. The devastating disorder gradually destroys memory and the ability to function, and eventually causes death.6 There is currently no known treatment for the disease.Researches discovered that the skin cells of Alzheimer' s patients have defects that interfere with their ability to regulate the flow of potassium in and out of the cells. The fact that the cell defects are present in the skin suggests that7 Alzheimer's results from physiological changes throughout the body, and that dementia may be the first noticeable effect of these changes as the defects affect the cells in the brain, scientists said. The flow of potassium is especially critical in cells responsible for memory formation8. The scientists also found two other defects that affect the cells' supply of calcium, another critical element. One test developed by researches calls for9 growing skin cells in a laboratory culture and then testing them with an electrical detector to determine if the microscopic tunnels that govern the flow of potassium are open. Open potassium channels create a unique electrical signature.A spokesman for the Alzheimer's Association said that if the validity of the diagnostic test can be proven it would be an important development, but cautioned that other promising tests for Alzheimer's have been disappointing.10。

2014全国职称英语卫生类新增A级文章及答案详解

第十三篇Stage Fright1(A级)Fall down as you come onstage. That‟s an odd trick. Not recommended. But it saved the pianist Vladimir Feltsman when he was a teenager back in Moscow. The veteran cellist Mstislav Rostropovich tripped him purposely to cure him of pre-performance panic,2Mr. Feltsman said, “ All my fright was gone. I already fell. What else could happen?”Today, music schools are addressing the problem of anxiety in classes that deal with performance techniques and career preparation. There are a variety of strategies that musicians can learn to fight stage fright and its symptoms: icy fingers, shaky limbs, racing heart, blank mind.3 Teachers and psychologists offer wide-ranging advice, from basics like learning pieces inside out,4 to mental discipline, such as visualizing a performance and taking steps to relax. Don‟t deny that you‟re jittery, they urge; some excitement is natural, even necessary for dynamic playing. And play in public often, simply for the experience.Psychotherapist Diane Nichols suggests some strategies for the moments before performance, “Take two deep abdominal breaths, open up your shoulders, then smile,‟‟ she says. “And not one of these …please don‟t kill me‟ smiles. Then choose three friendly faces in the audience, people you woul d communicate with and make music to, and make eye contact with them.” She doesn‟t want performers to think of the audience as a judge.Extreme demands by mentors or parents are often at the root of stage fright, says Dorothy Delay, a well-known violin teacher. She tells other teachers to demand only what their students are able to achieve. When Lynn Harrell was 20,he became the principal cellist of the Cleverland Orchestra, and he suffered extreme stage fright. “There were times when I got so nervous I was sure the audience could see my chest responding to the throbbing. It was just total panic. I came to a point where I thought,… If I have to go through this to play music, I think I‟m going to look for another job.”5 Recovery, he said, involved developing humility-recognizing that whatever his talent, he was fallible, and that an imperfect concert was not a disaster.6It is not only young artists who suffer, of course. The legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz‟s nerves were famous. The great tenor Franco Corelli is another example. “They had to push him on stage,” Sopran o Renata Scotto recalled.Actually, success can make things worse. “In the beginning of your career, when you‟re scared to death, nobody knows who you are, and they don‟t have any expectations,” Soprano June Anderson said. “There‟s less to lose. Later on, when you‟re known, people are coming to see you, and they have certain expectations. You have a lot to lose.”Anderson added,“I never stop being nervous until I‟ve sung my last note.”词汇:veteran / 'vetərən / adj.经验丰富的jittery / 'dʒɪtəri / adj.紧张不安的mentor / 'men'tɔ: / n.指导者soprano / sə'prprɑ:nəʊ / n.女高音;女高音歌手cellist/ 'tʃelɪst / n.大提琴演奏家abdominal / æb'dɔmənəl / adj.腹部的fallible/ 'fæləbəl / adj.易犯错误的tenor /'tenə/ n.男高音注释:1.Stage Fright:舞台恐惧2.The veteran cellist Mstislav Rostropovich tripped him purposely to cure him of pre-performance panic…资深大提琴家Mstislav Rostropovich故意把Vladimir Feltsman绊倒,因而治愈了他的上台前的恐惧症。

DSleep Problems Plague the Older SetOlder Americans often have difficulty getting a good night’S rest. It's a huge quality—of-life problem, experts say, because contrary to popular belief, seniors require about the same amount of sleep as younger adults.“Sleep problems and sleep disorders are not an inherent(固有的)pa rt of aging,”said Dr.Harrison G.Bloom,an associate clinical professor of geriatrics(老年病学)and medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.“It’S pretty much of a myth that older people need less sleep than younger people.”Yet.in a study published recently in The American Journal of Medicine, researchers found that more than half of older Americans have problems getting the sleep they need.older people tend to have“sleep fragmentation,”meaning they wake up more often during the night, said study author Dr.Julie Gammck,an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at St.Louis University. They also seem to get less“REM”sleep, the type of sleep during which rapid eye movement occurs,Bloom added. It’s unclear what role these naturally occurring changes in sleep patterns have on perso n’s quality of life,Bloom said.“What is important, though,is that older people often have actual sleep disorders and problems with sleep,”he said. And,experts say, there is usually more than one cause.“Sleep trouble in older adults is typically associat ed with acute and chronic illnesses, including specific sleep disorders like sleep apnea(呼吸暂停)and restless leg syndrome that appear with greater frequency in older populations,”said Michael V.Vitiello , a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and associate director of the University of Washington’S Northwest Geriatric Education Center.Taking multiple medications,as many older people do,can also lead t0 fatigue a“ hypersomnia ,”or being tired all the time,Bloom added.Another big problem,he noted,IS depression and anxiety.“Those are very commonly associated with sleep problems.”Despite the prevalence(流行)of sleep difficulties in older adults, many patients Aren’t getting the help they need。

2014年职称英语卫生类新增新增ABC级文章及答案详解第二部分阅读判断第九篇What Is a Dream?(B级)For centuries, people have wondered about the strange things that they dream about. Some psychologists say that this nighttime activity of the mind has no special meaning. Others, however, think that dreams are an important part of our lives. In fact, many experts believe that dreams can tell us about a person‟s mind and emotions. Before modern times, many people thought that dreams contained messages from God. It was only in the twentieth century that people started to study dreams in a scientific way.The Austrian psychologist, Sigmund Freud1,was probably the first person to study dreams scientifically. In his famous book, The interpretation of Dreams (1900), Freud wrote that dreams are an expression of a person‟s wishes. He believed that dreams allow people to express the feelings, thoughts, and fears that they are afraid to express in real life. The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung2was once a student of Freud‟s. Jung, however, had a different idea about dreams. Jung believed that the purpose of a dream was to communicate a message to the dreamer. He thought people could learn more about themselves by thinking about their dreams. For example, people who dream about falling may learn that they have too high an opinion of themselves. On the other hand, people who dream about being heroes may learn that they think too little of themselves.Modern-day psychologists continue to develop theories about dreams. For example, psychologist William Domhoff from the University of California, Santa Cruz, believes that dreams are tightly linked to a person‟s daily life, thoughts, and behavior. A criminal, for example, might dream about crime.Domhoff believes that there is a connection between dreams and age. His research shows that children do not dream as much as adults. According to Domhoff, dreaming is a mental skill that needs time to develop. He has also found a link between dreams and gender. His studies show that the dreams of men and women are different. For example, the people in men‟s dreams are often other men, and the dreams often involve fighting. This is not true of women‟s dreams.3 Domhoff found this gender difference in the dreams of people from 11 cultures around the world, including both modern and traditional ones. Can dreams help us understand ourselves? Psychologists continue to try to answer this question in different ways. However, one thing they agree on this: If you dream that something terrible is going to occur, you shouldn‟t panic. The dream may have meaning, but it does not mean that some terrible event will actually take place. It‟s important to remember that the world of dreams is not the real world.译文:什么是梦?许多世纪以来,人们都对他们梦到的奇异事情感到疑惑。

+11 Migrant Workers 移民工人In the past twenty years, there has been an increasing tendency for worke rs to move from one country to another. While some newly independent countries have understandably restricted most jobs to local people, others have attracted and welcomed migrant workers. This is particularly the case in the Middle East ,1 where increased oil incomes have enabled many countries to call in outsiders to improve local facilities. Thus the Middle East has attracted oil-workers fr om the USA and Europe. It has brought in construction workers and technicians f rom many countries, including South Korea and Japan. In view of the difficult living and working conditions in the Middle East , 2 it is not surprising that the pay is high to attract suitable workers. Many engineers and technicians can earn at least twice as much money in the Middle East as they can in their own country, and this is a major attraction. An allie d benefit is the low taxation or complete lack of it. 3 This increases the net amount of pay received by visiting workers and is very popular with them.Sometimes a disadvantage has a compensating advantage. For example, the di fficult living conditions often lead to increased friendship when workers have to depend on each other for safety and comfort. In a similar way, many migrant workers can save large sums of money partly because of the lack of entertainmen t facilities. The work is often complex and full of problems but this merely pr esents greater challenge to engineers who prefer to find solutions to problems ratherhan do routine work in their home country. One major problem which affects migrant workers in the Middle East is that their jobs are temporary ones. They are nearly always on contract, so it is not easy for them to plan ahead with great confidence. This is to be expected sinc e no country welcomes a large number of foreign workers as permanent residents. In any case , migrant workers accept this disadvantage, along with others, bec ause of the considerable financial benefits which they receive.在过去的20年,工人从一个国家到另一个国家的趋势越来越大。

Good or Bad?Saccharin(糖精) is the only truly man-made sweetener. It was discovered b y accident 100 years ago in an experiment with coal tar(煤焦油). In the experi ment, a scientist got some substance (which later he knew was saccharin) on his finger. “Later, at dinner, he put his finger into his mouth and noticed the sweet taste,”says Eric Walters, professor of biochemistry at the Chicago Me dical School.Containing no calories, saccharin is not absorbed by the human body. It began to be disliked by people during the late 1970s and early 1980s when one set of studies showed that it caused cancer in laboratory animals. Accord ing to Walters, it is not fair to saccharin because the studies were not perfec t.More recent testing with other animals with small amounts of saccharin h as not repeated the same results. Even with these experimental results, sacch arin labels are still required to carry a warning saying it has been shown to c ause cancer in laboratory animals. In 1990, saccharin was allowed to be sold i n the market again.Because it is hundreds of times sweeter than table sugar, only a small a mount of saccharin is used at home, in restaurants or in the food-making ind ustry.Another sweetener we commonly use is aspartame(甜味剂). It is not so sw eet as saccharin, but much sweeter than table sugar. Unlike saccharin, howev er, aspartame can be absorbed into the body. It contains 4 calories per gram, the same as table sugar. But aspartame is 180 times sweeter than sugar.Although aspartame is found in thousands of products, its safety, like sac charin, has still been uncertain. Nevertheless, people allow its use in all foods and drinks.“In my opinion, aspartame is as safe as sugar—but then there are those who think white sugar is dangerous,”says Walters. “Between aspartame and saccharin, I would pick aspartame. They say that persons with dyslexia use information in a different way. One of the world s great thinkers and scientists Albert Einstein was dyslexic. Einstein said that h e never thought in words the way that most people do. He said that he tho ught in pictures instead. The American inventor Thomas Edison was also dysle xic. Dyslexia first was recognized in Europe and the United States more than 80 years ago. Many years passed before doctors discovered that persons with the disorder were not mentally slow or disabled. The doctors found that the brains of persons with dyslexia are different. In most people, the left side ofthe brain—the part that controls language—is larger than the right side. In persons with dyslexia, the right side of the brain is bigger. Doctors are not s ure what causes this difference. However, research has shown that dyslexia is more common in males than in females, and it is found more often in perso ns who are left-handed. No one knows the cause of dyslexia, but some scien tists believe that it may result from chemical changes in a baby's body long before it is born. They are trying to find ways to teach persons with dyslexia Dyslexic persons think differently and need special kinds of teaching help. Because the men are new at the ga me, they don’t hesitate to discuss the fat problem incessantly. However wom en of the same age do not discuss the fat problem, especially not in mixed c ompany. They prefer to face the problem with quiet dignity. Discussing the p roblem might only draw attention to some stray body part that may be succ essfully tucked away under an article of clothing. The age at which a man begins to explore the fat problem can vary. The actual problem can manifest itself in the early 30’s, but broad-range discuss ion usually starts later. There are early nonverbal symptoms. I’ve watched therugged journalist who shares my apartment sneak by with a Diet Coke. His shirts are no longer neatly tucked in to display a trim waist. Recently he has begun to verbalize his anxiety. He tells me, with a sheepish grin, that he is ta king his suits to Chinatown to have them “tailored”.Still-older men have lost their dignity and rattle on unabashedly. Often wi ves and children play important roles in their fat-inspection rituals. Take my o ldest brother, a former college football player. His daughter says that several times a day he will stand at attention and call out, “Fat, medium or thin?”She knows the correct answer:medium. Thin would be an obvious stretch, and fat may not get her that new video. According to his wife, he stands in fron t of the mirror in the morning(before the day’s meals take their toll), puts hi s hands behind his head and lurches into a side bend, then clutches the roll that has developed and says, “am I getting fatter?”His wife is expected to a nswer, “you look like you may have lost a few pounds”.职称英语考试And then there are the ex-husbands a pitiful group. They are extremely v ocal. When I go to the movies with one, he confides that he is suffering fro m great hunger because he is dieting. He hasn’t eaten since the pancakes a nd sausages he wolfed down that morning. He pauses in his monologue whil e he buys his popcorn. After the movie, we sprint to a restaurant, where he again pauses to devour a basket of bread. Before he orders his chaste salad and soup, he grows plaintive. Do I think he’s fat?1. Men of a certain age are always ready to talk about their fat problem.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned正确的答案是: A2. Women of a certain age do not discuss the fat problem, especially in t he presence of men.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned正确的答案是: A3. Not mentioned正确的答案是: CFactors Influencing MarriageThe common view in social science of love relationships is not that oppo sites attract each other but that like attracts like. People fall in love with othe rs who share their interests and tastes and whose personalities are similar. Hil l, Rubin, and Peplau (176) found only slight support for this view. On a great many characteristics, couples were not alike. On others, couples were only so mewhat alike. Couples did tend to be about the same age, to be equally goo d-looking, to have similar IQ scores, to be of the same religion, and to want the same number of children. But on each of these things, quite a few coupl es differed from one another. In fact, on only one question did most agree o n:whether they were “in love”.The early interviews failed to find that being alike was very important in bringing couples together. The follow up interviews found that similarities wer e much more important in keeping couples together. Those who were togeth er after two years were much more closely matched than couples who broke up, especially in terms of age, IQ, college plans, and looks. Thus, couples wer e much more likely to break up if one person was a lot smarter, better looki ng, or older. It is easy to imagine why these differences would matter. If one person is much smarter or more mature than the other, this could cause co nflicts. If one person is much better looking, he or she will have more chance s for other relationships.Yet other things that would seem as important turned out not to matter. Those who stayed together differed not at all from those who broke up in how alike they were on religion, sex role ideas, beliefs about sex, idealism, or the number of children they wanted. Surely, one might suppose that marked differences in sex role attitudes could cause friction or that religious differen ces might lead to breakups. But there was no evidence of this.In fact, conflict was not one of the main reasons people gave for breakin g up. Most said they broke up because they got bored with the other perso n. Often this caused one of the pair to become interested in someone else, t hus prompting the split. Perhaps surprisingly, the woman got involved with s omeone else far more often than the man. Also, women were much more lik ely to suggest a breakup than men, regardless of the grounds. However, peo ple were more likely to remain friends after the breakup if the man asked for the split. This suggests that the male ego is more sensitive to rejection.1. Most couples are about the same age, to be equally goodlooking, to h ave similar IQ scores and so on.A. RightB. WrongC. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon (结肠).Different cultures are more likely to develop certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultur es. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, governmen t researchers realized that nitrates (硝酸盐) commonly used to preserve color i n meats, and other food additives, accused cancer. Yet, these additives remai n in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which thin gs on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The ad ditives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin(青霉素) to beef and poultry(家禽),and because of this, penicillin has been found in t he milk of treated cows, Sometimes similar dugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons, The farmers are simply t rying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. They telephoned all states a nd local officials in the area and told them that a serious eruption was poss ible at any time. Roads were closed to every one except scientists and forest keepers struggled to keep curious visitors away from the mountain.Shortly after noon on March 27, Mount Saint Helens erupted for the firs t time in 123 years. People living north of the mountain heard a loud boom that shook their windows, and airline pilots flying near the volcano soon aft erwards described a thick black column of ash and steam shooting more tha n 2, 100 meters into the sky.Later, scientists found that the explosion had made a new crater(大坑) in the top of the mountain, not far from the old crater. The north side of the peak now had a huge bulge(凸出部分) where rock and ice had been pushed out by the eruption.A second eruption shook the mountain on March 28. It, too, sent up a column of black ash high into the sky. By March 29, scientists flying over th e mountain saw that a second crater formed about 9 meters from the first one. Strange blue flames flickered(闪烁) inside the crater and sometimes jum ped from one crater to the other.By April 1 the mountain had erupted several more times and the snow on the north slope of the peak was black with ash. Ash carried by the windhad fallen on towns as far as 240 kilometers away from Mount Saint Helen s.During the first week of April, Mount Saint Helens gave scientists somet hing new to worry about harmonic tremors(震动) recorded by scientists show ed a big eruption would happen. All during April and into May Mount Saint Helens continued to shudder(震动) and shoot out ash. By April 8, the two c raters had merged to form a vast hole nearly a half of a kilometer wide and 250 meters deep.Scientists main worry during this time was the growing bulge of rock and ice on the north face of the mountain. By May 7 scientists feared the w orst. Their warnings led Washington Governor to set up safety zones around the mountain. The inner “red ”zone was open to scientists only. The out er “blue”zone was open only to people who got special permits. But in s pite of these warnings, some people got past the road barriers and risked t heir lives trying to get close to the volcano.1. People fall in love with othe rs who share their interests and tastes and whose personalities are similar. Hill, Rubin, and Peplau (176) found only slight support for this view. On a great many characteristics, couples were not alike. On others, couples were only so mewhat alike. Couples did tend to be about the same age, to be equally goo d looking, to have similar IQ scores, to be of the same religion, and to wan t the same number of children. But on each of these things, quite a few cou ples differed from one another. In fact, on only one question did most agree on:whether they were “in love”.The early interviews failed to find that being alike was very important in bringing couples together. The follow up interviews found that similarities w ere much more important in keeping couples together. Those who were toge ther after two years were much more closely matched than couples who brok e up, especially in terms of age, IQ, college plans, and looks. Thus, couples w ere much more likely to break up if one person was a lot smarter, better loo king, or older. It is easy to imagine why these differences would matter. If on e person is much smarter or more mature than the other, this could cause c onflicts. If one person is much better looking, he or she will have more chan ces for other relationships.Yet other things that would seem as important turned out not to matter. Those who stayed together differed not at all from those who broke up in how alike they were on religion, sex role ideas, beliefs about sex, idealism, or the number of children they wanted. Surely, one might suppose that markeddifferences in sex role attitudes could cause friction or that religious differen ces might lead to breakups. RightB. WrongC.
