onNEW TECHNOLOGY
BEFORE THE COMPUTER “So of course I grew up with a pencil […] and I was pretty good at that. […] Then, there was a lot of glue, a lot of other materials, you know, pasting up and specifying type and losing type and was a very long and tedious process. […] Oh god, what a life. I spend two-thirds of my life on nothing, in a sense.” AFTER THE COMPUTER “So throw away all other kinds of tools and all of a sudden you could do things that were taking a long time to do, all of a sudden you can do it and you can see while you’re doing it. So that is a very, very, very exciting thing. Not only that, but you could do things better than ever in history. You can also do things worse than in history, all the time. Most people do worse things than ever. But good guys then make better things than ever. And so that is a great tool to work. And this is what we use all the time.”

Phylogeny 1904 of October 27, when he was mayor of New York, George McClelland hand joystick, began its maiden subway line in New York, with 26 minutes of the time ran the full length of 9.1 miles, passing through 28 stations The city's first subway line. Research scholar at Columbia University in New York history, Keith Jackson believes that if there is no subway, every day there will be more vehicles from entering Manhattan, traffic jams and expensive parking fees will not be living in New York City, New York can not become such a great present city. New York's subway is not quiet, even noisy. In a number of subway you can see jugglers and other so-called street art or indifferent from around the world, many of them difficult to survive in the United States of Chinese people, some of them sell Chinese paintings, some erhu, and so on. Subway spectators seemed always more than the number of performances. New York subway and some disorganized. Maybe New York is too crowded, perhaps taking into account the design of the subway "people-oriented", so many subway stations are not built in a prominent place, sometimes looking more strenuous.
“ And since I was born and raised in Milan, architects in Milan, they were also doing all kinds of things. They were designing buildings and furniture and interiors and exhibitions and so on. Then I shared an apartment with Max Huber, a famous graphic designer from Switzerland, and so I learned graphic design and I got fully in love with graphic design. And so I was doing the whole thing from graphics to architecture. […] I was reading all of the books of them (Le Corbusier, European architects) and about what they had to say, and that gave me the critical strength or the critical background to approach architecture and design.”

Subway Art Guide
Massimo Vignelli
Massimo Vignelli was a masterful designer who designed the New York City Subway map in 1972. It was a work of art in it's utter simplicity.
Can clearly see the colour coding more neat arrangement, the overall visual contrast is stronger. But the diagram model of expression remains unchanged.
onDESIGN SUCCESS
ON GOOD DESIGN “I do not like design that is a flat tire, that has no tension, that has no guts, that has no expression. [It needs to be] intellectually elegant. [ …] We are surrounded by a tremendous amount of vulgarity and it is an effort to change that kind of situation. And of course, you like to talk about it, you like to convince people and tell people how to get away from vulgar situations into something which is a little more elegant, a little more refined. And if you multiply, multiply, multiply, then the world is beginning to get better. It takes you a long time […] And so, you train yourself to be disciplined and you train yourself to stay away from trends. And into the notion of timelessness.” ON BAD DESIGN “Most manufacturers (designs) are more interested in the money. And greed is really the religion of vulgarity. […] I mean, as part of the culture, more here (USA) than any other place to a certain extent. […] Maybe because it's a very young country and hasn't had the time to sift what is good from what is bad. But like everything that is young it's fascinating.”
