浙江省2012高考英语二轮复习专题训练:阅读理解(90)阅读理解AA new generation addiction is quickly spreading all over the world.Weboholism, a twentieth century disease, affects people from different ages. They surf the net, use e-mail and speak in chat rooms. They spend many hours on the computer, and it becomes a compulsive habit. They cannot stop, and it affects their lives.Ten years ago, no one thought that using computers could become compulsive behavior that could affect the social and physical life of computer users. This obsessional behavior has affected teenagers and college students. They are likely to log on computers and spend long hours at different websites. They become hooked on computers and gradually their social and school life is affected by this situation. They spend all free time surfing and don't concentrate on homework, so this addiction influences their grades and success at school.Because they can find everything on the websites, they hang out there. Moreover, this addiction to websites influences their social life. They spend more time in front of computers than with their friends. The relation with their friends changes. The virtual life becomes more important than their real life. They have a new language that they speak in the chat rooms and it causes cultural changes in society.Because of the change in their behavior, they begin to isolate themselves from the society and live with their virtual friends. They share their emotions and feelings with friends who they have never met in their life.Although they feel confident on the computer, they are not confident with real life friends they have known all their life.It is a problem for the future. This addictive behavior is beginning to affect all the world.1.The main idea of the passage is about ____________.A.the cause of weboholism B.the advantage of weboholismC.the popularity of weboholism D.the influence of weboholism2.The underlined word “obsessional” in the second paragraph most probably means ___________.A.attractive B.addictive C.professional D.potential 3.We can infer from the passage that __________.A.weboholism has the greatest effect on teenagersB.students can hardly balance real and virtual lifeC.people are addicted to games on the InternetD.virtual life is more vivid and attractive anyway4.Which of the following is NOT true of weboholism?A.It contributes to the development of the web.B.The chat room language may change social culture.C.The problem will be getting more and more serious later.D.People addicted to the web often become inactive in real life.BThe appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects.Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to people's desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive productsthat improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work.Others are worthless anda waste of consumers' money.Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading.A few years ago a brand of bread was offered to dieters (节食者) with the message that there were fewer calories in every slice. It turned out that the bread was not dietetic (适合于节食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin, but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer's real concerns.Consider fire insurance.Fire insurance may be sold by appealing to fearof loss. But fear of loss is the real reason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurancea worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as well as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising. Each consumer must evaluate her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appealto consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product.Consumers still controlthe final buying decision.5.Advertising can persuade the consumer to buy worthless products by _______.A.stressing their high qualityB.convincing him of their low priceC.maintaining a balance between quality and priceD.appealing to his buying motives6.The reason why the bread advertisement is misleading is that _______.A.thin slices of bread could contain more caloriesB.the loaf was cut into regular slicesC.the bread was not genuine breadD.the total number of calories in the loaf remained the same7.Which statement is True according to the passage?A.sometimes advertisements really sell what the consumer needs .B.advertisements occasionally force consumers into buying things they don't need.C.the buying motives of consumers are controlled by advertisements.D.fire insurance is seldom a worthwhile investment.8.It can be inferred from the passage that a smart consumer should _______.A.think carefully about the benefits described in the advertisementsB.guard against the deceiving nature of advertisementsC.be familiar with various advertising strategiesD.avoid buying products that have strong emotional appealCThe way we do things round hereSome years ago, I was hired by an American bank.I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started, "高考学习网 John, I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us." That "quite" saddened me.I thought he was saying "we're kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else." Then I discovered that in American English "quite" sometimes means "very", while in British English it means "fairly".So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language and by that I don't just mean the words people speak. It is body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on.The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures(文化).Some of these differences may be only on the surface-dress, food and hours of work-while others may be deeper and take longer to deal with.Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate (气候),while getting on with business. Some of the differences may be an improvement.People are more polite; the service is better; you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality(准时).If you invite people to a party at 7 o'clock your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in theAmerican Midwest, an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece.I prefer not to use the word "late" because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.9.The author was unhappy as mentioned in Paragraph 1 because he thought______.A.the American bank didn't think much of himB.the American bank might hire another personC.it's difficult to get used to American cultureD.it's easy to misunderstand Americans10.The word "highlights" in Paragraph 2 probably means_____.A.encourages B.helps to narrowC.increases D.draws attention to11.According to the author, what should we do with most cultural differences?A.Ask the native people for help.B.Understand and accept them.C.Do things in our own way.D.Do in-depth research.12.When invited to a party the people who are usually punctual are______.A.Italians B.Germans C.Greeks D.the BritishDIn a world with limited land, water and other natural resources (资源), the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise.Actually, the past decades has seen more and more forests disappearing and globe becoming increasingly warm.People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable (可持续的) ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries.According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decades.China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil (棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%.Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets.First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions (排放) and targets for saving and reusing energy.Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from traditional model to a sustainable one.The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of growing population within the limits if this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.13.The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that ______.A.It makes the world warmer B.it consumes natural resources C.it brings severe damage to forests D.it makes growth hard to continue14.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?A.China lacks wind and solar energy.B.China is the leader of the low-carbon market.C.High-speed trains are a low-carbon development.D.Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests.15.To full develop the low-carbon markets, government can ______.A.cut public expenses B.forbid carbon emissionC.develop public resources D.encourage energy conservation 16.What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To introduce a new business model.B.To compare two business models.C.To predict a change of the global market.D.To advocate sustainable development.EHuman remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lost to science under a law that threatens research into the history of humans in Britain, a group of leading archeologists(考古学家) says.In a letter addressed to the justice secretary, Ken Clarke, 40 archaeologists write of their “deep and widespread concern” about the issue. It centers on the law introduced by the Ministry of Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied within two years, regardless of their age.The decision means scientists have too little time to study bones and other human remains of national and cultural significance.“Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or a further special extension, is contrary to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and o f museum practice,” they write. The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 400 dig sites, including the remains of 60 or so bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC.Archaeologists have been granted a temporary extension to give them more time, but eventually the bones will have to be returned to the ground. The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoveries at sites such as Happisburgh in Norfolk, where digging is continuing after the discovery of stone tools made by early humans 950,000 years ago.If human remains were found at Happisburgh, they would be the oldest in northern Europe and the first indication of what this species was.Under the current practice of the law those remains would have to be reburied and effectively destroyed. Before 2008, guidelines allowed for the proper preservation and study of bones of sufficient age and historical interest, while the Burial Act 1857 applied to more recent remains. The Ministry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that the law was temporary, but has so far failed to revise it.Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said: “Archaeologists have been extremely patient because we were led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem, but we feel that we cannot wait any longer.”The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains should be reburied, or on what records should be kept.17.According to the passage, scientists are unhappy with the law mainly because ______.A.it is only a temporary measure on the human remainsB.it is unreasonable and thus destructive to scientific researchC.it was introduced by the government without their knowledgeD.it is vague about where and how to rebury human remains18.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.Temporary extension of two years will guarantee scientists enough time.B.Human remains of the oldest species were dug out at Happisburgh.C.Human remains will have to be reburied despite the extension of time.D.Scientists have been warned that the law can hardly be changed.19.What can be inferred about the British law governing human remains?A.The Ministry of Justice did not intend it to protect human remains.B.The Burial Act 1857 only applied to remains uncovered before 1857.C.The law on human remains hasn’t changed in recent decades.D.The Ministry of Justice has not done enough about the law.20.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A.New discoveries should be reburied, the government demands.B.Research time should be extended, scientists require.C.Law on human remains needs thorough discussion, authorities say.D.Law could bury ancient secrets for ever, archeologists warn.DBBA DDAA ADBB BBDD BCDD。

Everyone needs a break, and vacations are not meant for serious study. Instead, they’re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. The Spring Festival is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey or while you’re hanging out with the family. Before getting into the recommendations, we need to determine your English reading comprehen sion level so you don’t pick a book which is so challenging that it’s stressful or so simple that it’s boring. If you’re at the beginner level, there are two options: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. Thi s will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story. If you’re at the intermediate level, popular books like pop fiction, mysteries and thrillers are good options, as they’ll be guaranteed page turners and that will increase the possibility of your getting all the way through the book. For advanced readers, science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners (Booker, Nobel, Pulitzer)are good options. The most important thing is to pi ck a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few chapters are always really hard to get through, as I have to get accustomed to the way the individual author uses the language. But after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story. Some of my favorite Chinese-language eye candy are books that are series like Brothers by Yu Hua or The Dancer by Hai Yan. I like them because there’s always a lot of action and story de velopment to keep me involved, which helps me make it through those first few chapters.Another great way to keep yourself motivated over the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve anddiscuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail. I’m currently doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve been doing this since we were classmates in Chinese at college. Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton or British writer Agatha Christie; and if you like horror, US writer Stephen King is always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or author that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!-from 21st Century(January 21, 2009)(B)Ambition is a necessary quality in life. It is the force which drives us on to use whatever talent we have got. If we haven’t got some degree of ambition, these talents will not be used for our own and other’s benefit. We must continually want to be better than we are. Without ambition we are just jellyfish that flop through life. We only react to events; we don’t try to control them.Ambition, however, can have several defects.First of all it can be unrealistic. We may not be able to see the limits of our own abilities, so we do ambitious things that are completely beyond us. Our career masters can see our good qualities and our limitations objectively. They may tell us that we haven’t th e ability to deal with people and would make good businessmen. We refuse to take their evaluation. We keep on trying. Many years and many disappointments later we are forced to accept their judgment. But what a waste of time our ill-founded ambition has caused us!Secondly, our ambition can be too concentrated. We devote our attention to one narrow aim, such as getting distinctions in our science subjects. Everything that may draw us away from this aim is cut out of our lives. In the end we get our distinctions. But what damage we have caused ourselves in the process! We are isolated beings who only care about a particular examination. And we probably won’t make good scientists. We lack the breadth of view necessary for success in higher studies.Thirdly, our ambition can be limited to lifeless objectives. We want to gain money, or power, or membership of some circles. Persons who feel inferior try to make up by seeking the respect of others through possessions of these artificial signs of worth.Fourthly, our ambition may be self-centered. Instead of directing some of our ambition towards community improvement we may exploit members of the community in the interests of self-advancements. In later life we may be ambitious for the success of our children but we regard this success as only a further mark of our own success.Ambition is necessary in the lives of individuals---necessary for their own improvement and for the improvement of the community in which they live. But, like all blind forces, it must be directed if it is not to cause disaster. It must be tightly controlled by the head and the heart. Otherwise ambition may demand too high a price in terms of human qualities.1.improve2. benefiting3. enable4. lacking5. greater6. reputation/fame7. selfish8.others’9. Conclusion 10.master。

AShe had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brown haired, freckle-faced image of innocence. Outside, it was pouring so heavily. We all stood there just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others annoyed because nature messed up their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Her voice was so sweet that it broke the hypnotic trance (昏昏欲睡) we were all caught in. “Mom,let’s run through the rain,” she said.“No,honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit,” Mom replied. This young child waited about another minute and repeated: “Mom,let’s run through the rain. ”“We’ll get soaked if we do,” Mom said.“No,we won’t,Mom. That’s not what you said this morning,” the young girl said as she tore at her Mom’s arm.“This mo rn ing? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?”“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said if God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!”The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I dare say you couldn’t hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child’s lifetime when innocent trust can be developed so that it will bloom into faith. “ Honey, you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the rain. If get wet, well maybe we just need washing, ” Mom said. Then off they ran.We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they rushed past the cars and they held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing. You may lose your material possessions, your money and even your health, but no one can ever take away your precious memories. Her husband was cured of his cancer.B. She was strong-willed and considerate.C. She was in despair and pretended to forget what she said.D. Her daughter completely understood the situation her family was in3. Which of the following may the author agree with?A. The mother should not tell her child about the family misfortune.B. Parents should act more bravely than their children.C. Parents should grasp every opportunity to influence their children to grow well.D. Children should learn to show gratitude and understanding to their parents.4. The best title for the passage might be _ .A. Run Through the RainB. Be a Determined MotherC. Wait in the RainD. Have a wonderful experienceBFrom the health point of view we are living in an amazing age. We are free from many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once deadly illnesses can now be cured by modern medicine. It is almost certain that one day medicines will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased greatly. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable killing of men, women and children on the roads. Man vs the motor-car! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing.Thousands of people all over the world are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盘), his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They say, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-olds and completely selfish. Their hidden angers and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving. The surprising thing is that society smiles so gently on the motorist and seems to forgive his behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is ruined by road networks; and the deaths become nothing more than a number every year, to be easily forgotten. It is high time a world rule was created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are unbelievable lenient (宽容的) and even the strictest are not strict enough. A rule which was universally accepted could only have an obviously beneficial effect on the accident rate. Hereare a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through strict tests for safety each year. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can damage a person’s driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. Speed limits should be required on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for car factories, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stress power and performance should be banned. These measures may not sound good enough. But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in reducing the number of deaths. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.5. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists.B. Thousands of people all over the world are killed each year.C. The laws of some countries about driving are to lenient.D. Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents.6. What does the author think of society toward motorists?A. Society laughs at the motorists.B. Huge car parks are build in the cities and towns.C. Victims of accidents are nothing.D. Society forgives their rude driving7. What does the author mean by saying “his car becomes the extension of his personality” inParagraph 2?A. Driving can show his hidden qualitiesB. Driving can show the other part of his personalityC. Driving can bring out his characterD. Driving can represent his manners8. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents?A. Perfect the road networkB. Stricter driving testsC. Test drivers every three yearsD. Raise age limit and lay down safety specifications.9. The author’s attitude towards the traffic situation is ______.A. confusedB. discontentedC. appealingD. doubtfulCOne night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking as I was. How dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Thoughwe had never spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level, we all depend upon one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers. As technology shrinks our world, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring team action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates are not ours alone to control. In my own life, I’ve put great stock in personal resp onsibility. But, as time has passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are mom ents when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. so, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road, what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat, but a shared moment of trust.10. The author considers it very important ______.A. to drive with a companyB. to have personal independenceC. to gain certain responsibilityD. to share trust and cooperation11. The author said that they depended on each other in the same way because ______.A. the approaching car was very dangerousB. they both drove their car at a terrific speedC. he might be killed out of the other’s careless drivingD. it was dark and the road was not wide enough12. From the second paragraph, we know the author drew the important lesson from ______.A. only one experienceB. many similar experiencesC. a driver on a dark roadD. many friends and strangers13. The need for cooperation increases because ______.A. peoples’ fates can’t be controlled by themselvesB. certain viruses can spread in a quick wayC. terrorism can happen everywhere and every dayD. the world has become much more dangerous14. We can infer from the last paragraph that the author has ______.A. believed in one’s own personal responsibilityB. counted upon himself alone in everythingC. had no trust in others’ good faith and judgmentD. had accomplished a change on his viewpoint of lifeDWhen I was fourteen, I earned money in the summer by cutting lawns(草坪), and within a few weeks I had built up a body of customers. I got to know people bythe flowers they planted that I had to remember not to cut down, by the things they lost in the grass or struck in the ground on purpose. I reached the point with most of them when I knew in advance what complaint was about to be spoken, which particular request was most important. And I learned something about the measure of my neighbors by their preferred method of payment: by the job, by the month--- or not at all.Mr. Ballou fell into the last category, and he always had a reason why. On one day, he had no change for a fifty, on another he was flat out of checks, on another, he was simply out when I knocked on his door. Still, except for the money apart, he was a nice enough guy, always waving or tipping his hat when he’d see me from a distance. I figured him for a thin retirement check, maybe a work-relayed injury that kept him from doing his own yard work. Sure, I kept track of the total, but I didn’t worry about the amount too much. Grass was grass, and the little that Mr. Ballou’s property comprised didn’t take long to trim (修剪).Then, one late afternoon in mid-July, the hottest time of the year, I was walking by his house and he opened the door, mentioned me to come inside. The hall was cool, shaded, and it took my eyes a minute to adjust to the dim light.“I owe you,” Mr. Ballou, “but…”I thought I’d save him the trouble of thinking of a new excuse. “No problem. Don’t worry about it.”“The bank made a mistake in my account,” he continued, ignoring my words. “It will be cleared up in a day or two. But in the meantime I thought perhaps you could choose one or two volumes for a down payment. He gestured toward the walls and I saw that books were stacked (堆放) everywhere. It was like a library, except with no order to the arrangement.“Take your time,”Mr. Ballou encouraged. “Read, borrow, keep. Find something you like. What do you read?”“I don’t know.” And I didn’t. I generally read what was in front of me, what I could get from the paperback stack at the drugstore, what I found at the library, magazines, the back of cereal boxes, comics. The idea of consciously seeking out a special title was new to me, but, I realized, not without appeal-- so I started to look through the piles of books.“You actually read all of these?”“This isn’t much,”Mr. Ballou said. “This is nothing, just what I’ve kept, the ones worth looking at a second time.”“Pick for me, then.”He raised his eyebrows, cocked his head, and regarded me as though measuring me for a suit. After a moment, he nodded, searched through a stack, and handed me a dark red hardbound book, fairly thick.“The Last of the Just,”I read. “By Andre Schwarz-Bart. What’s it about?”“You tell me,” he said. “Next week.”I started after supper, sitting outdoors on an uncomfortable kitchen chair.Within a few pages, the yard, the summer, disappeared, and I was plunged into the aching tragedy of the Holocaust, the extraordinary clash of good, represented by one decent man, and evil. Translated from French, the language was elegant, simple, impossible to resist. When the evening light finally failed I moved inside, read all through the night,To this day, thirty years later, I vividly remember the experience. It was my first voluntary encounter(接触、遇到)with world literature, and I was stunned (震惊) by the concentrated power a novel could contain. I lacked the vocabulary, however, to translate my feelings into words. So the next week when Mr. Ballou asked, “Well?”I only replied, “It was good?”“Keep it, then,” he said. “Shall I suggest another?”I nodded, and was presented with the paperback edition of Margaret Mead’s Coming of Age in Samoa ( a very important book on the study of the social and cultural development of peoples--- anthropology (人类学) ).To make two long stories short, Mr. Ballou never paid me a cent for cutting his grass that year or the next, but for fifteen years I taught anthropology at Dartmouth College. Summer reading was not the innocent entertainment I had assumed it to be, not a light-hearted, instantly forgettable escape in a hammock (吊床) ( though I have since enjoyed many of those, too). A book, if it arrives before you at the right moment, in the proper season, at an internal in the daily business of things, will change the course of all that follows.15.The author thought that Mr. Ballou was ______________.A. rich but meanB. poor but politeC. honest but forgettableD.strong but lazy16. Before his encounter with Mr. Ballou, the author used to read _____________.A. anything and everythingB. only what was given to himC. only serious novelsD. nothing in the summer17. The author found the first book Mr. Ballou gave him _____________.A. light-heated and enjoyableB. dull but well writtenC. impossible to put downD. difficult to understand18. From what he said to the author, we can gather that Mr. Ballou _______________.A. read all books twiceB. did not do much readingC. read more books than he keptD. preferred to read hardbound books19. The following year the author _______________.A. started studying anthropology at collegeB. continued to cut Mr. Ballou’s lawnC. spent most of his time lazing away in a hammockD. had forgotten what he had read the summer before20. 浙江省2012高考英语二轮复习专题训练:阅读理解(42)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
ATwenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. When I arrived at 2:30 a.m, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk(按喇叭)once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away. But I had seen too many poor people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. This passenger might be someone who needed my assistance, I reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address, then asked, ―Could you drive through downtown? ‖ ―It’s not the shortest way,‖ I answered quickly. ―Oh, I don’t mind, ‖ she said. ― I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice(晚期病人收容所).‖I looked in the rearview mirror. Her eyes were glistening. ―I don’t have any family left,‖ She continued. ―The doctor says I don’t have very long time.‖ I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. ―What route would you like me to take?‖ I as ked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in fron t of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she’d gone dancing as a girl.As the first hint of sun rose from the horizon, she suddenly said, ―I’m tired. Let’s go now. ‖ We drove in silence to the hospice. When I was leaving, she insisted on paying me, but I refused. Instead, I bent down and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. ―You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,‖ she said. ―Thank you.‖ I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run or had honked once and then driven away?On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life. We’re conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware—beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.1.The driver didn’t just honk but knocked at the door and waited because________.A. he didn’t want to miss any chance to make moneyB. he knew the woman was waiting for himC. he thought maybe someone was in need of his taxi serviceD. taxis was the only means of transportation for the poor2. Why did the old woman ask the driver to drive through downtown?A. She was in no hurry and had some time to kill.B. She didn’t want to get to the hospice befo re daybreak.C. She wanted to see some places before her life ended.D. There were many places of interest worth her visit.3. It can be learned from the passage that_______.A. the driver decided not to charge the woman after they got to the hospiceB. the woman was afraid to go to the hospice for her last daysC. the woman once worked in a furniture warehouseD. the driver didn’t feel it a pity though he didn’t earn much that shift4. What does the driver want to share with us by telling the story?A. The old are always those who need our help most.B. A small kind act may mean a lot to those in need.C. Those who offer help are the happiest in the world.D. Sometimes it’s necessary for taxi drivers to offer free service.BAs I traveled for several weeks in November, meeting with CEOs in different countries, I got to different airports. Here is what I learned as I travelled to Europe, South America and Asia before returning home to Chicago.Lines form in London’s Heathrow AirportI arrived at the new Terminal (航站楼)5 in London’s Heathrow Airport , which is a modern excellent building. It is filled with High Street stores and seems more like a shopping mall— like the Mall of America in Minneapolis or the Galleria in Houston—than a place to catch planes. At T5 they have perfected the art of making you stand in long, frustrating lines. After you spend twenty minutes in line getting your boarding pass scanned, you move to another long line to have your passport checked. T5 takes the art of waiting to a new level, so much so that even though I had nearly an hour to make a connecting flight(转机), I missed my connection and spent the next three hours in an airport waiting hall.Heathrow views itself as a gateway to the world. But you’d better not be in a hurry to pass through it. T5 reflects the old days of British globalization – the 1800s– when it took at least 80 days to get around the world.Nonstop to BrazilSao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport, one of three in the city and Brazil’s busiest, has 260 check-in counters, operates around the clock, and struggles to keep up with demand. It has few passengers waiting halls and relatively little shopping. It’s difficult to connect to the Internet. Plans call for two additional terminals, a third runway, and an express train into the city. In such a developing country, Guarulhos keeps runn ing faster, but it hasn’t yet caught up.New Delhi SmokeFirst-time visitors arriving at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport would be concerned about the smell that enters the aircraft as the plane is slowing down on the runway. It’s caused by what Delhi weather forecasters call ―smoke‖. When you enter the terminal, you sense the overcrowded India. It seems like all 1.1 billion people are trying to get through Customs with you. Heathrow has its queues; Gandhi has countless human bodies pressing ahead. Be prepared to wait an hour or two before you enter the country. The airport reflects the backwardness of the Third World, where just about everything is falling apart. A new terminal is being built, but like everything in India, it will take what seems like forever to complete the job.Charles de Gaulle International AirportCharles de Gaulle International Airport, as you would suspect, is beautiful. Its Terminal 2 is an architectural marvel, with high ceilings and lots of light. Attractive though it may be, it’s hard to get around. Try finding your way from a gate in section 2A to a gate in section 2F. It’s all in the same terminal but it feels like you are running a maze, especially when Paris is not your final destination.Charles de Gaulle looks great, but like French high fashion, it’s not very functional.5. The underlined word ―Galleria‖ in the 2nd paragraph probably refers to the name of ______.A. a shopping mallB. High Street storeC. an airportD. a hotel6 .What does the writ er dislike most about London’s Heathrow Airport ?A. It’s more like a shopping mall than an airport.B. He had to get his passport checked and boarding pass scanned.C. He had to wait in the long and slow lines.D. The flight he intended to take didn’t tak e off on time.7. From the passage, we can know that ______.A. You have to wait long both at Heathrow and Gandhi because of too many passengersB. Guarulhos fails to meet the needs of passengers though it tries its bestC. there should be no trouble in finding your way at Charles de GaulleD. Heathrow lives up to its name of a gateway to the world8. By writing the passage, the writer tried to ________.A. point out the weak points of these airportsB. introduce the most important airports in the worldC. compare different airports among Europe, South America and AsiaD. tell us airports are mirrors of the countries that build themCThe Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution has just published a report on new materials and has looked at the case of nanotechnology(纳米技术), which describes the science of the very small. Nanotechnology covers those man-made materials or objects that are about a thousand times smaller than the microtechnology(微电子技术)we use, such as the silicon chips of computers.Nanotechnology gets its name from the nanometer, which is a billionth of a meter. There are about 600 consumer products already on the market that use nanotechnology. Nanomedicine is also being developed to fight cancer and other fatal diseases. The Royal Commission found no evidence of harm to health or the environment from nanomaterials, but this ―absence of evidence‖ is not being taken as ―evidence of absence‖. In other words, just because there are no apparent problems, this is not to say that here is no risk now or in the future. The commission is concerned about the pace at which we are inventing and adopting new nanomaterials, which could result in future problems that we are ill-equipped to understand or even find with current testing methods. One of the problems about nanotechnology is that when we make something very small out of a well known material, we may actually change the functionality of that material even if the chemical composition remains the same. Indeed, it is not the particle(颗粒)size that should concern us, but its functionality. Take gold, for example, which is a famously inert (惰性) substance, and valuable because of it. It doesn’t rust or corrode because it doesn’t interact with water or oxygen. However, a particle of gold that is between 2 and 5 nanometers in diameter becomes highly reactive. This is not due to a change in chemical composition, but because of a change in the physical size of the gold particles. How can a change in size result in a change of function? One reason is to do with surface area. Nanoparticles have relatively a much bigger surface area. It is like comparing the surface area of a basketball with the total surface area of many pea-sized balls with the same weight of the single basketball. The pea-sized balls have a surface area many hundreds, indeed thousands of times bigger than the basketball, and this allows them to interact more easily with the environment. It is this increased interactivity that changestheir functionality—and makes them potentially more dangerous to health or the environment.9. Why does the writer mention microtechnology in the first paragraph?A. to introduce the topic of nanotechnologyB. to help us better understand nanotechnologyC. to help us know more about microtechnologyD. to compare microtechnology with nanotechnology10. The example of the ―gold‖ in the last paragraph is intended to show that_________.A. gold is valuable because it is an inert substanceB. an inert substance like gold doesn’t interact with water or oxyg enC. the function of gold is steady because it is an inert substanceD. the function of gold changes when made into something very small11. Which process explains that there might be risks in nanotechnology?A. expand surface area →increase interactivity → change functionality→cause possible dangersB. expand surface area → change functionality → increase interactivity→cause possible dangersC. increase interactivity → expand surface area → change functionality→cause possible da ngersD. increase interactivity → change functionality → expand surface area→cause possible dangers12. What does the passage mainly focus on?A. the introduction of nanotechnology and its wide useB. the present use of nanotechnology and its futureC. the potential danger nanotechnology may bring usD. the proposal to stop nanotechnology due to the potential dangerDWell, more and more companies are beginning to create products and services for teenagers. The Disney Company sells the Hannah Montana television show, music, film and goods to teenagers and their parents. You can get everything from branded lunchboxes and mobile phone covers, to monthly fan magazines and clothing. The High School Musical series of films is also intended for teenage audie nce. So, it’s all about sales, which tells us teenagers must have more money, freedom and influence upon their parents than they’ve ever had before. Most children in the UK today get more pocket money than kids did a decade ago. In spite of the economic crisis, parents have more money to give than previously, since parents are having fewer children on average than in the past. In addition, the divorce rate in the UK is continually rising and parents spend less time with their children than they used to, so many parents try to compensate by buying presents for their children. It’s a bad habit for both parents and children to get into, but parents are under constant pressure from commercial marketing and the demands of their children. You may wonder how teenagers have more freedom than previous generations. Well, a lot of UK children today have a television, if not a computer, in their bedrooms. They have access to much more information about life and the world. They may have experienced a lot in life as well, since 24 percent of UK children live in single-parent families, so people now say that ―kids are getting older younger. ‖ Therefore, it’s no wonder teenagers are able to influence their parents.UK teenagers never used to be worried about spending money o n being fashionable. That’schanged. Now, they are much more fashion conscious(关注的)and concerned about their image. In a world of television programs that promise overnight success and fame at a young age, some people think it’s extremely important to look fashionable. Such ideas are also promoted by both the Hannah Montana story, in which a teenager girl suddenly becomes a world-famous pop star, and the High School Musical story, in which teenagers take part in various talent shows. So what does teenage fashion look like? Well, it’s quite horrible really, but then I’m a bit too ol d to appreciate it, I suppose. It’s lots of brightly colored materials, particularly pink, and usually plain, not patterned. There are plenty of bows, necklaces and bracelets, too. It’s all very cute, if that’s your taste. Can it really be healthy for us to encourage kids to be adults at such a young age? Are we stealing childhoods to get a bit of profit? Well, it has caused the attention of the UK government, and some strict laws have been passed to prevent companies from directly marketing their products and services at children.13. All of the following help teenagers to have more pocket money than those a decade agoEXCEPT that ________.A. parents generally earn more money than they used toB. parents have fewer children on average than they used toC. parents give their children more money to make up for less time with themD. children expect more money of parents to buy products and services14. Which of the following would be most unhappy if teenagers were not so fashion conscious?A. parentsB. the writerC. companiesD. the government15. Teenagers today care so much about their image because ________.A. they live in a world of television programsB. a teenager girl suddenly became famous in the Disney CompanyC. they want to live a life different from their parentsD. they think fashion can help them achieve sudden success16. What’s the writer’s attitude towards ―kids are getting older younger ‖ ?A. concernedB. disappointedC. interestedD. relievedEHuman beings have always created the heroes we need. Right now, it’s natural that we’d be at it again, searching for heroes to suit the times.First there was Captain Sully Sullenberger, walking the length of his sinking plane to be sure every last passenger was safely off. Then came Captain Richard Phillips, battling pirates(海盗)in angry seas. And finally there’s Susan Boyle, the unemployed church lady whose dying mother had told her to chase her ridiculous dreams of being a musical star.Any one of them could be your Uncle Oliver or Aunt Florence, living lives innocent of fame until faced with a sudden test. Not much chance to prepare, other than a lifetime spent becoming themselves. Sully had 19,000 hours of flight time; he flew gliders as a hobby, had two master’s degrees, and studied crisis psychology to learn how to keep a crew on task in an emergency. ―Me and my crew, we were just doing our job,‖ he told the president, who had called to congratulate him. Phillips, a former cab driver, didn’t have any weapon to fight against the pirates with, so he tried to trade himself for the pirate his crew had captured and he was held hostage(人质)for five days before he was rescued. And then there is Boyle, the youngest of nine children born in an ordinary family. When she auditioned (试演)for a TV talent show in 1995, she was just made funof. So she sang karaoke at the pub and cared for her sick mother until the day she died. ―Mum was my life,‖ Boyle said. ―She was the one who said I should enter Britain’s Got talent."Once a month the news gods have delivered these stories to us, reminding us where value lies. It’s so much better to discover that Superman could be anyone; that everywhere you look, there is hidden honor, talent and luck. The s tories wouldn’t have worked if Susan Boyle had been a well-known lawyer or Phillips a SEAL(狙击手)himself. Their normality gives them wings. The qualities these stories celebrate are striking: competence—as shown in a pilot with a perfect feel for his machine, sacrifice—in a captain who would trade himself for the sake of his crew, persistence—in the singer who knew that this was what she wanted. These are, not by accident, the qualities Barack Obama, national life coach regularly sings high praise for.Our times call for modesty, patience, perseverance and proficiency. We long for the company of o rdinary heroes. It’s a karaoke moment: we can’t afford a band, but we’ll gladly sing of normal nobility all night long.17. Which of the following about the three heroes is true?A. Sully saved his plane from sinking in an emergency.B. Sully had been training himself for the day to be a hero.C. Phillips was caught and held hostage for five days.D. Boyle owed part of her success to her mother.18. The underlined sentence in the fourth paragraph is closest in meaning to _______.A. They are average people so they have their wingsB. Average people usually have their own wingsC. Being average people helps them to be famousD. Famous people are usually average people19. Why does Barack Obama appreciate the qualities of competence, sacrifice and persistence?A. The three heroes possess these qualities.B. Such qualities are what our times need.C. One needs these qualities to be famous.D. The news media publicize these qualities.20. What might be a good title for the passage ?A. Look for the real heroes of our timesB. 浙江 2012年高考英语阅读题
第二部分:阅读理解(第一节20小题,第二节5小题;每小题2分,共50分)第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卷上将该选项标号涂黑。
AEaster (复活节) is still a great day for worship, candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for bunnies. And no, not because the kids like to pull their ears. The culprit is climate change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five species of rabbit in the US.Take the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit, for instance. An endangered species that lives in the Lower Florida Keys, this species of cottontail is a great swimmer -- it lives on the islands! -- but it is already severely affected by development and now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of only 0.6 meters will send these guys jumping to higher ground and a 0.9-meter rise would wipe out their habitat (栖息地) completely. The snowshoe hare, on the other hand, has a color issue. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, each designed to give them better cover from predators (捕食者). As the number of days with snow decreases all across the country, however, more and more bunnies are being left in white fur during brown dirt days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators. Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. The National Wildlife Federation has reported that hunters have noticed their numbers are already markedly down.American pikas or rock rabbits, a relative of rabbits and hares, might be the first of these species to go extinct due to climate change. About 7-8 inches long, pikas live high in the cool damp mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally migrate (迁徙) to higher ground --- but they already occupy the mountaintops. They can’t go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their habitat heats up.The volcano rabbit has the same problem. These rabbits live on the slopes of volcanoes in Mexico, and recent studies have shown that the lower range of their habitat has already shifted upward about 700 meters, but there are not suitable plants for them to move higher, so they are stuck in the middle. Scientists are concerned about their populations.Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their habitats have been destroyed by development. Several populations, such as the Columbia Basin pygmy, almost went extinct and were saved by zoo breeding programs. Pygmy rabbits also rely on winter cover by digging tunnels through the snow to escape predators, but lesser snowfall is leaving them exposed. All of this gives new meaning to dressing up in a giant bunny costume this Easter.41. The writer mentions Easter at the beginning of the passage in order toA. show the importance of Easter DayB. introduce the issue about bunniesC. remind people of Easter traditionsD. discuss the relationship between Easter and bunnies42. The word “culprit” (Paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to_________A. criminalB. judgeC. victimD. producer43. According to the passage, some rabbits can now be easily discovered by predators becausethey ________.A. are exposed to more skillful huntersB. have moved to habitats with fewer plantsC. haven’t adapted themselves to climate changeD. can’t change their fur color into white in the fall and the spring44. The problem faced by volcano rabbits and rock rabbits is that ________.A. both are affected by less snowB. both are affected by rising sea levelsC. neither can find enough foodD. neither can migrate to higher places45. Which best describes the writer’s tone in the passage?A. Approving.B. Concerned.C. Enthusiastic.D. Doubtful.BBelow is a selection about Guinness(吉尼斯)World Records.Top 6 Unusual Guinness World Records♦Fastest 100 m running on all foursThe 2008 Guinness World Records Day was, according to CWR, their biggest day ofrecord-breaking ever, with more than 290.000 people taking part in record attempts in 15 differentcountries. The record for “Most T-shirts worn at once”.D. The record for “ Heaviest pumpkin”.CTwo friends have an argument that bleaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, “In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence”. Given that this is the case, why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drivecars, or stay physically fit?First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn’t in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决) stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name-calling, and accusation only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control. After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles. Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn’t mean trying to figure out what’s wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn’t, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution. There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, “64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. He was a rural mill carrier, and on Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when 1 was a boy it was such a fun to stick your finger ‘through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck on your fingers. On Dad’s final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one member from each family was waiting at their mailbox to thank him for his friendship and his years of service. “Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route.” he used to say, “and a story at every one.” One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail in to her every day because she was nearly blind. Once inside, he read her mail and helped her pay her bills.Mailboxes were sometimes used for things other than mail. One note left in a mailbox read. “Nat, take these eggs to Marian; she’s baking a cake and doesn’t have any eggs. “ Mailboxes might be buried in the snow, or broken, or lying on the groom: but the mail was always delivered. On cold days Dad might find one of his customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate. A young wrote letters but had no stamps, so she left a few button on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps. One businessman used to leave large amounts of cash in his mailbox for Dad to take to the bank. Once, the amount came to 8 32,000.A dozen years ago, when I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad’s death, the mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn’t the case.As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. When my dad was around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.I made a turn at the comer and drove past the post office and across the railroad tracks to our house. Mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table when I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank Townsend, Dad’s postmaster and great friend for many years. So we all sat down at the table and began to tell stories. At one point Frank looked at me with tears in his eyes. “What are we going to do about theletters this Christmas?” he asked. “The letters?” “I guess you never knew.” “Knew what?” “Remember, when you were a kid and you used to put your letters to Santa in those green and red boxes on Main Street? It was your dad who answered all those letters every year.”I just sat there with tears in my eyes. It wasn’t hard for me to imagine Dad sitting at the old table in our basement reading those letters and answering each one. I have since spoken with several of the people who received Christmas letters during their childhood, and they told me how amazed they were that Santa had known so much about their homes and families. For me, just knowing that story about my father was the gift of a lifetime.55. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. The MailB. Christmas LettersC. Special MailboxesD. Memorable Travels第二节下面文章中有5处(第61~65题)需要添加小标题,请从以下选项中选出符合各段意思的小标题,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑,选项中一项为多余选项.A. Slow Down Your LifeB. Escape Now and ThenC. Separate Your ActionsD. Allow Yourself to Be WeakE. Relieve Pressure by Firmly Saying “No”F. Stop Expecting Everything to Be PerfectHow to Simplify Your LifeLess is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, get rid of junk instead of piling it up, relax instead of stressing, slow down instead of speeding up. Apply these principles in your everyday life in a conscious way. You will then find yourself well along on your journey to simplification.61. ____When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn’t even know you had. Just imagine: you are at a fair and you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you keep grabbing one and then the other, it will take forever, because one of them will keep slipping out from under your arm and running off. But if you tie one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run back and get the other one, and with great determination, carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of success.62. ______The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations. In the modem nuclear family, the expectations that formerly would have been shared among all the relatives are now concentrated on the individual partner. If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for all the things you need to do, then it’s not because the day has too few hours, but because you have too many activities. A simple fact that overloaded people often tend to forget. The solution is equally simple; refuse to accept so many work assignments in your private life or your working life.63. ____“I can handle stress” is regarded as a positive statement in the world of work. People who can handle stress are given more and more to cope with — until one day they break.Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you arc under more stress than you can cope with. These signals came from various areas of life. You become ill, or your work efficiency decreases. If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress. Say quite openly, “I can’t manage that.”64. ____“If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, more clever, then I would be happier.” This is a dream that makes a lot of people ill, depressed, and unhappy. Life has its flaws, defects, comets, and edges. Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life.Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous; driving a car, crossing the road. But life doesn’t consist entirely of these things. In among them there is a lot of room for small and large mistakes.65. ____Successful people all have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work. Find out which places improve your creativity. For me it’s the train. When I know that I’m going to be traveling for four hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door, I find my mind is free and I can read or write complex articles. There can be problems working on the train, of course: if the person sitting opposite you keeps talking away, or if train trips make you tired (some people fall asleep after a few miles).第二部分阅读理解:41. AMost of us long for relationships in which we are loved and accepted. Our heart s’desire is to give and receive love in relationships that make us feel that even if others disagree with what we do or say, they still love us, accept us, and appreciate what we give to the world. While it would be wonderful to have these types of relationships with all people, we know that’s hard to do. However, we can have such relationships with some others, but only when we first have them with ourselves—and, strangely, this is often the hardest relationship of all.Do you love yourself? You may think you do, but do you really? There’s only one way to find out---by taking a close look at what you think, say, and do. You may not like some of what you find, but if you are serious about really loving yourself, you can use this insight to do some positive inner work. Here’re three ways for gaining greater personal insight for deeper love:Listen Closely to Your ThoughtsYour thoughts will determine your actions. One thing helping you to listen to your thoughts is keeping a journal. It is not necessary for you to write in it every day, but it helps to record various insights you gain as you go about your life. Instead of using a big notebook, you might use a small notepad that you can keep in your pocket for easy access to record your thoughts as they occur to you. Whichever method you choose, what’s most important is that you write your thoughts down. It will help you know what’s in your heart.Be Honest with YourselfTo do this, you should pay attention to your actions. Actions speak louder than words, and they always tell the truth. If you say you love your job, but your actions say otherwise, which do you think is more reliable? On the other hand, if you say you’re not good at a certain job, but your actions say otherwise, that’s also important. What do you do with this insight? You can use it to make more positive choices in your life. By being honest with yourself, you will act according to truth instead of just what you tell yourself.Take Quiet Time to Listen to Your Inner VoiceThis is similar to the first point, but it takes a step further---beyond the natural mind to the heart that cannot be seen. You may want to use your quiet time to think deeply. However you use this time, the key is to shut out all of the noise around you by focusing deep within yourself. Breathing deeply during quiet time will also help you focus. I know it’s hard to find quiet time during a particularly busy day, but it’s so important---even if it’s just 10 minutes a day and you have to hide somewhere to get it. Quiet time can really make a difference in your life. Despite what your mind may be telling you, you can have love with no limits. The key is to unconditionally love yourself first.(原创)1. By looking deep into what we think, say, and do, we can _____.A. know whether we really love ourselvesB. appreciate what we give to the worldC. realize what type of relationship we long forD. know whether we are loved and accepted by others(原创)2. An important way for gaining personal insight is to _____.A. do some positive inner workB. keep a journal wherever you goC. look closely at what others say about usD. pay attention to our thoughts(原创)3. The insight we gain from our actions can help us _____.A. focus our attention on our jobsB. make more positive choices in our lifeC. act according to the truthD. tell the differences between our words and our actions(原创)4. It can be learned from the passage that if we want to have love without limits, we must first of all _____.A. be honest with ourselves anytimeB. give our love to others generouslyC. love ourselves unconditionallyD. take quiet time and think deeplyBThe trip to the United Stated opened my eyes to the fact that there are a lot of similarities as well as differences between American youth and French youth. The first difference is in appearance. Going around in the U.S., I found that American youth do not really care about their appearance. In the morning, they choose something in their closet and wear it with another thing, often of different colors and styles, without wondering whether their choices make them look strange. The reason behind this is that they don’t care what people look like, but are just interested in their ideas. I think it’s great, but it also causes problems. Since they don’t care about their appearance, they don’t really care about their weight. Often they get fat without realizing it.There are differences in relationships too. When the American youth fall in love, they don’t really think of the future. Also, there are differences in the rules concerning behavior that is allowed. In some respects, the French are more accepting. For example, in America it is generally unacceptable to make physical display of love. Lovers, in theory, can’t kiss or hold each other everywhere they want. People think that not showing love in public places is a way to respect others. On the contrary, the French youth can do almost everything they want. With regard to other types of relationships, there are also big differences. Americans act differently from French people in front of unknown people. When an American girl, for example, arrives in front of people she has never met before, she will talk with them, trying to create a kind of bond between her and this new circle of people. The French girls will just think about rather than really do this kind of thing because they are too shy and lacking in self-confidence.To finish, I noticed that in American classes, when pupils want to say or asksomething, they just do it. In general, they don’t really care how the others will judge them. In France, it’s not the same case. If somebody wants to ask something, he/she will think about it before speaking up. I appreciate the freedom in Americans’ behavior, ideas, and ways of expressing themselves.(改编)5. American young people _______.A. are just interested in people’s clothesB. show more interest in people’s ideasC. care more about their weightD. are more concerned about appearance (改编)6. When American youth fall in love with each other, they _________.A. will not hold each otherB. will always think about their futureC. will rarely display their love in publicD. will kiss wherever they like(原创)7. When meeting with strangers, American girls will not _______.A. try to establish a type of relationship with themB. have faith in themselvesC. start to create a conversationD. behave in a way similar to French girls(原创)8. It can be inferred from the passage that French youth may think more about ______.A. their relationship’s futureB. their public imagesC. their physical displaysD. their lover’s ideas(改编)9. The passage is mainly about the______ between American youth and French youth.A. similaritiesB. friendshipC. differencesD. differences and the similaritiesCThere were red faces at one of Britain’s biggest banks recently. They had accepted a telephone order to buy £100,000 worth of shares from a 15-year-old schoolboy (they thought he was 21). The shares fell in value and the schoolboy was unable to pay up. The bank lost £20,000 on the deal which it cannot get back, because, for one thing, the young boy does not have the money, for another, being under 18, he is not legally liable for his debts. If the shares had risen in value by the same amount that they fell, he would have pocketed £20,000 profit. It certainly is better than delivering the morning newspaper. In another case, a boy of 14 found, in his grandmother’s house, a suitcase full of foreign banknotes. But they were now not used in their country of origin or anywhere else. This young boy headed straight to the nearest bank with his pockets filled with notes. The cashiers did not realize the country in question had reduced the value of its currency by 90%. They exchanged the notes at their face value at the current exchange rate. In three days, beforehe was found out, he took £200,000 from nine different banks. Amazingly, he had already spent more than half of this before the police caught up with him. Because he is also under 18 the banks have kissed goodbye to a lot of money, and several cashiers have lost their jobs.Should we admire these youngsters for being enterprising and showing initiative or condemn them for their dishonesty? Maybe they had managed for years with tiny amounts of pocket money that they got from tight-fisted parents. Maybe they had done Saturday jobs for peanuts. It is hardly surprising, given the expensive things that young people want to buy, such as fashionable running shoes and computer games, if they sometimes think up more imaginative ways of making money than delivering newspapers. These youngsters saw the chance to make a lot of money and took it.Another recent story which should give us food for thought is the case of the man who paid his six-year-old daughter£300 a week pocket money. He then charged her for the food she ate a few coins for her piggy bank(存钱灌)“She will soon learn the value of money, ” he said. “There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Everything has to be paid for and the sooner she learns that the better.” At the other extreme there are fond parents who provide free bed and board for their grown-up children, While even the most hard-hearted parents might hesitate to throw their children out on the streets, we all know of people in their twenties who still shamelessly live off their parents. Surely there comes a time when everyone has to leave the parental nest, look after themselves and pay their own way in life. But when is it?(改编)10. Recently one of Britain’s biggest banks _____.A. bought a lot of shares for a customer and brought him a great lossB. lost money as its young customer had no money to pay his debtsC. lost much money because the shares they bought fell in valueD. received a telephone order to buy shares for a 21-year-old boy(改编)11. The young customer _____.A. would have paid his debts, had he had the money to do soB. would be sent to prison if he didn’t pay his debtsC. would have made £20,000, had the shares risen in value by the same amount they fellD. would have continued to cheat banks, if he had not been found out(改编)12. The author’s attitude to the example of the two boys who cheated the banks is _____.A. objectiveB. subjectiveC. questioningD. negative(改编)13. The man paid his daughter £300 a week pocket money and then required her to pay for her living expenses because _____.A. he wanted her to know making money was not easyB. he wanted to save money for her future educationC. he thought it useful for family members to bear life hardships togetherD. he wanted her to learn the value of money(改编)14. It can be concluded from the passage that the author believes that _____.A. children should leave the parental nest as soon as possibleB. grown-up children should live on their ownC. children should be taught not to cheat othersD. parents should give more pocket money to their childrenDHe came into the room to shut the windows while we were still in bed and I saw he looked ill. He was shivering, his face was white, and he walked slowly as though it ached to move."What's the matter, Schatz?""I've got a headache.""You better go back to bed.""No. I'm all right.""You go to bed. I'll see you when I'm dressed."But when I came downstairs he was dressed, sitting by the fire, looking a very sick and miserable boy of nine years. When I put my hand on his forehead I knew he had a fever."You go up to bed," I said, "You're sick.""I'm all right," he said. When the doctor came he took the boy's temperature."What's is it?" I asked him."One hundred and two."Downstairs, the doctor left three different medicines in different colored capsules with instructions for giving them. One was to bring down the fever, another a purgative(泻药), the third to overcome an acid condition. The germs of influenza (流感)can only exist in an acid condition, he explained. He seemed to know all about influenza and said there was nothing to worry about if the fever did not go above one hundred and four degrees. This was a light epidemic(传染病;传染性的) of flu and there was no danger if you avoided pneumonia(肺炎).Back in the room I wrote the boy's temperature down and made a note of the time to give the various capsules."Do you want me to read to you?""All right. If you want to, " said the boy. His face was very white and there were dark areas under his eyes. He lay still in the bed and seemed very detached (超然的;冷漠的)from what was going on.I read aloud from Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates(海盗);but I could see he was not following what I was reading."How do you feel, Schatz?" I asked him."Just the same, so far," he said.I sat at the foot of the bed and read to myself while I waited for it to be time to give another capsule. It would have been natural for him to go to sleep, but when I looked up he was looking at the foot of the bed, looking very strangely."Why don't you try to sleep? I'll wake you up for the medicine.""I'd rather stay awake."After a while he said to me, "You don't have to stay in here with me, Papa, if it bothers you.""It doesn't bother me.""No, I mean you don't have to stay if it's going to bother you."I thought perhaps he was a little lightheaded and after giving him the prescribed capsules at eleven o'clock I went out with my gun and the young hunting dog….I killed two quail(鹌鹑), and missed five, and started back pleased to have found a covey of quail close to the house and happy there were so many left to find on another day.At the house they said the boy had refused to let anyone come into the room."You can't come in," he said. "You mustn't get what I have."I went up to him and found him in exactly the position I had left him, white-faced, but with the tops of his cheeks flushed(发红)by the fever, staring still, as he had stared, at the foot of the bed.I took his temperature."What is it?""Something like a hundred," I said. It was one hundred and two and four tenths."It was a hundred and two," he said."Who said so?""The doctor.""Your temperature is all right," I said. "It's nothing to worry about.""I don't worry," he said, "but I can't keep from thinking.""Don't think," I said. "Just take it easy.""I'm taking it easy," he said and looked straight ahead, He was evidently holding tight onto himself about something."Take this with water.""Do you think it will do any good?""Of course it will."I sat down and opened the Pirate book and began to read, but I could see he was not following, so I stopped."About what time do you think I'm going to die?" he asked."What?""About how long will it be before I die?""You aren't going to die. What's the matter with you? ""Oh, yes, I am, I heard him say a hundred and two.""People don't die with a fever of one hundred and two. That's a silly way to talk.""I know they do. At school in France the boys told me you can't live with forty-four degrees. I've got a hundred and two."He had been waiting to die all day, ever since nine o'clock in the morning."You poor Schatz," I said. "Poor old Schatz. It's like miles and kilometers. You aren't going to die. That's different thermometer. On that thermometer thirty-seven is normal. On this kind it's ninety-eight.""Are you sure?""Absolutely," I said, "It's like miles and kilometers. You know, like how many kilometers we make when we do seventy miles in the car?""Oh," he said. But his gaze at the foot of the bed relaxed slowly. The hold over himself relaxed too, finally, and the next day it was very slack(松驰的) and he cried very easily at little things that were of no importance.(改编)15. It can be inferred from the story that it is _____ by the time the father gets home from hunting.A. early in the afternoonB. close to eveningC. at noonD. late in the morning(改编)18. AA three-year independent investigation into the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagonresearchers who conducted the investigation conclusively (and unfortunately), establishes as a historical fact that the violence which took place in Arlington that day was not the result of a surprise attack by suicide hijackers, but rather a military black operation involving a carefully planned and skillfully executed deception."A CNN Reporter at the scene states that there is no evidence that a 757 hit the Pentagon. What hit the Pentagon? A Boeing 757 loaded with passengers and fuel right? Who was on Flight 757? According to the Flight Information there were No Arabs on it. That makes me wonder if Flight 757 actually existed at all. From the pictures and the videos, people can find that there are several doubtful points that need to be taken into consideration, for example the marker line on the grass in the satellite and ground pictures, the different colors of the smoke, the hole which the plane impacted, and the standing pylons (架线塔).Also, from the comparison of the different pictures, people can find some other strange points. For example, the gear (齿轮) is not the matching one. The wreckage of the plane is not the one from the American Airlines. The glass on the pavement of the pole is another doubtful point. The last thing that need considering is about the collapse. One of the gif video shows the plane impacting the Pentagon. The only problem with this video footage is that it has been altered (改变) and can not be fully trusted. These crash photos and videos shown here clearly have been doctored (篡改) and don't even match the physics of what happened. So where is the real video? It leaves me many questions. Is this a missile? It is a real enigma.1. Where can you possibly read this article?A. In a newspaper.B. In a book.C. In a magazine.D. NG.BThere is increasing evidence that the impacts of meteorites (陨星) have had important effects on Earth, particularly in the field of biological evolution. Such impacts continue to pose a natural hazard to life on Earth. If an impact is large enough, it can disturb the environment of the entire Earth and cause an ecological catastrophe. The best-documented such impact took place 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period (白垩纪期) of geological history. This break in Earth's history is marked by a mass extinction, when as many as half the species on the planet became extinct. While there are a dozen or more mass extinctions in the geological record, the Cretaceous mass extinction has always intrigued paleontologists (古生物学者) because it marks the end of the age of the dinosaurs. For tens of millions of years, those great creatures had flourished. Then, suddenly, they disappeared. The body that impacted Earth at the end of the Cretaceous period was a meteorite with a mass of more than a trillion tons and a diameter of at least 10 kilometers. Scientists first identified this impact in 1980 from the worldwide layer of sediment (沉积物) deposited from the dust cloud that enveloped the planet after the impact. This sediment layer is enriched in the rare metal iridium (铱) and other elements that are relatively abundant in a meteorite but very rare in the crust (地壳) of Earth. Even diluted (稀释) by the terrestrial (地球的) material excavated (挖掘) from the crater, this component of meteorites is easily identified. By 1990 geologists had located the impact site itself in the Yucat region of Mexico. The crater, now deeply buried in sediment, was originally about 200 kilometers in diameter. This impact released an enormous amount of energy, excavating a crater about twice as large as the lunar crater Tycho. The explosion lifted about 100 trillion tons of dust into the atmosphere. Such a quantity of material would have blocked the sunlight completely from reaching the surface, plunging Earth into a period of cold and darkness that lasted at least several months. The explosion is also calculated to have produced vast quantities of nitric acid (硝酸) and melted rock that sprayed out over much of Earth, starting widespread fires that must have consumed most terrestrial forests and grassland. Presumably, those environmental disasters could have been responsible for the mass extinction, including the death of the dinosaurs.Several other mass extinctions in the geological record have been tentatively identified with large impacts, but none is so dramatic as the Cretaceous event. But even without such specific documentation, it is clear that impacts of this size do occur and that their results can be catastrophic. What is a catastrophe for one group of living things, however, may createopportunities for another group. Following each mass extinction, there is a sudden evolutionary burst as new species develop to fill the ecological niches opened by the event.Impacts by meteorites represent one way that could cause global catastrophes and seriously influence the evolution of life all over the planet. According to some estimates, the majority of all extinctions of species may be due to such impacts. Such a perspective fundamentally changes our view of biological evolution. The standard criterion for the survival of a species is its success in competing with other species and adapting to slowly changing environments. Yet an equally important criterion is the ability of a species to survive random global ecological catastrophes due to impacts.5. In paragraph 2, why does the author include the information that dinosaurs had flourished fortens of millions of years and then suddenly disappeared?A. To support the claim that the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous is thebest-documented of the dozen or so mass extinctions in the geological record.B. To explain why as many as half of the species on Earth at the time are believed to havebecome extinct at the end of the Cretaceous.C. To explain why paleontologists have always been intrigued by the mass extinction at theend of the Cretaceous.D. To provide evidence that an impact can be large enough to disturb the environment of theentire planet and cause an ecological disaster.6. According to paragraph 3, how did scientists determine that a large meteorite had impactedEarth?A. They discovered a large crater in the Yucat region of Mexico.B. They found a unique layer of sediment worldwide.C. They were alerted by archaeologists who had been excavating in the Yucat region.D. They located a meteorite with a mass of over a trillion tons.7. According to paragraph 4, all of the following statements are true of the impact at the end of theCretaceous period EXCEPT:A. A large amount of dust blocked sunlight from Earth.B. Earth became cold and dark for several months.C. New elements were formed in Earth's crust.D. Large quantities of nitric acid were produced.A. identified without certaintyB. identified after careful studyC. occasionally identifiedD. easily identified9. Paragraph 6 supports which of the following statements about the factors that are essential forthe survival of a species?A. The most important factor for the survival of a species is its ability to compete and adapt togradual changes in its environment.B. The ability of a species to compete and adapt to a gradually changing environment is notthe only ability that is essential for survival.C. Since most extinctions of species are due to major meteorite impacts, the ability to survivesuch impacts is the most important factor for the survival of a species.D. The factors that are most important for the survival of a species vary significantly from onespecies to another.CPassage 1 is from the introduction to a Zen Buddhist(禅宗的佛教僧侣) manual on the art of “mindfulness”, the practice of paying close attention to the present moment. Passage 2 is from an essay by a United States author.Passage 1Every morning, when we wake up, we have 24 brand-new hours to live. What a precious gift! We have the capacity to live in a way that these 24 hours will bring peace, joy, and happiness to ourselves and to others.Peace is right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see. The question is whether or not we are in touch with i t. We don’t have to travel far away to enjoy the blue sky. We don’t have to leave our city or even our neighborhood to enjoy the eyes of a beautiful child. Even the air we breathe can be a source of joy.We can smile, breathe, walk, and eat our meals in a way that allows us to be in touch with the abundance of happiness that is available. We are very good at preparing how to live, but not very good at living. We know how to sacrifice ten years for a diploma, and we are willing to work very hard to get a job, a car, a house, and so on. But we have difficulty remembering that we are alive in the present moment, the only moment there is for us to be alive. Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with joy, peace, and serenity. We need only to be awake, alive in the present moment.Passage 2The argument of both the hedonist (享乐主义者) and the guru (印度教的宗师) is that we were but to open ourselves to the richness of the moment, to concentrate on the feast before us, we would be filled with bliss. I have lived in the present from time to time and can tell you that it is much overrated. Occasionally, as a holiday from stroking one’s memories or brooding (担忧) about future worries, I grant you, it can be a nice change of pace. But to “be here now,” hour after hour, would never work. I don’t even approve of stories written in the present tense. Ads for poets who never use a past participate, they deserve the eternity they are striving for.Besides, the present has a way of intruding whether you like it or not. Why should I go out of my way to meet it? Let it splash on me from time to time, like a car going through a puddle, and I,on the sidewalk of my solitude (孤独), will salute it grimly like any other modern inconvenience. If I attend a concert, obviously not to listen to the music but to find a brief breathing space in which to meditate on the past and future. I realize that there may be moments when the music invades my ears and I am forced to pay attention to it, note for note. I believe I take such intrusions gracefully. The present is not always an unwelcome guest, so long as it doesn’t stay too long and cut into my remembering or brooding time.10.The author of Passage 1 would most likely view the author of Passage 2 as _______.A. attaching too much importance to the views of othersB. advocating an action without considering the consequencesC. squandering (浪费) a precious opportunity on a daily basisD. failing to respect the feelings of other people11. The author of Passage 1 would most likely respond to the “argument” (line 1 Passage 2) with_______.A. complete agreementB. partial acceptanceC. absolute neutralityD. surprised disbelief12. In Passage 1 line 11, the list (“a job…house”) presents things that most people ________.A. assume they will eventually obtainB. eventually realize are overratedC. are unwilling to make sacrifices forD. see as worth much effort to acquire13. In Passage 2 lines 8—10, the “present” is characterized as _________.A. a dangerous threatB. an unsolvable puzzleC. an unavoidable imposition (强加)D. a burdensome obligation14. Which of the following phrases from Passage 2 would the author of Passage 1 most likelychoose as a title for Passage 1?A. “the hedonist and the guru” (line 1)B. “the feast before us” (line 2)C. “a brief breathing space” (line 11)D. “an unwelcome guest” (line 14)DTom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He stopped by the fence in front of the house where he lived with his aunt Polly. He looked at it, and all joy left him. The fence was long and high. He put the brush into the whitewash and moved it along the top of the fence. He repeated the operation. He felt he could not continue and sat down.He knew that his friends would arrive soon with all kinds of interesting plans for the day. They would walk past him and laugh. They would make jokes about his having to work on a beautiful summer Saturday. The thought burned him like fire.He put his hand into his pockets and took out all that he owned. Perhaps he could find some way to pay someone to do the whitewashing for him. But there was nothing of value in his pockets —nothing that could buy even half an hour of freedom. So he put the bits of toys back into hispockets and gave up the ideaAt this dark and hopeless moment, a wonderful idea came to him. It filled his mind with a great, bright light. Calmly he picked up the brush and started again to whitewash. While Tom was working, Ben Rogers appeared. Ben was eating an apple as he walked along the street. As he walked along, he was making noises like the sound of a riverboat. First he shouted loudly, like a boat captain. Then he s aid “Ding-Dong-Dong”, “Ding-Dong-Dong” again and again, like the bell of a riverboat. And he made other strange noises. When he came close to Tom, he stopped.Tom went on whitewashing. He did not look at Ben. Ben stared a moment and then said: “Hello! I’m going swimming, but you can’t go, can you?”No answer. Tom moved his brush carefully along the fence and looked at the result with the eye of an artist. Ben came nearer. Tom’s mouth watered for the apple, but he kept on working.Ben said, “Hello, old fellow, you’ve got to work, hey?”Tom turned suddenly and said, “Why, it’s you, Ben! I wasn’t noticing.”“Say —I’m going swimming. Don’t you wish you could? But of course you’d rather work —wouldn’t you? Of course you would.”Tom looked at the boy a bit, and s aid “What do you call work?”“Why, isn’t that work?”Tom went back to his whitewashing, and answered carelessly.“Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know is, it suits Tom Sawyer.”“Oh come, now, you don’t mean to say that you like it?”The brush continued to move.“Like it? Well, I don’t see why I shouldn’t like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?”Ben stopped eating his apple. Tom moved his brush back and forth, stepped back to look at the result, added a touch here and there, and stepped back again. Ben watched every move and got more and more interested. Soon he said,“Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.”Tom thought for a moment, was about to agree; but he changed his mind.“No —no —it won’t do, Ben. You see, Aunt Poll y wants this fence to be perfect. It has got to be done very carefully. I don’t think there is one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it well enough.”“No —is that so? Oh come, now —let me just try. Only just a little.” “Ben, I’d like to, b ut if it isn’t done right, I’m afraid Aunt Polly … ”“Oh, I’ll be careful. Now let me try. Say —I’ll give you the core of my apple.”“Well, here —No, Ben, now don’t. I’m afraid …”“I’ll give you all of it.”Tom gave up the brush with unwillingness on his face, but joy in his heart. And while Ben worked at the fence in the hot sun, Tom sat under a tree, eating the apple, and planning how to get more help. There were enough boys. Each one came to laugh, but remained to whitewash. By the time Ben was tired, Tom sold the next chance to Billy for a kite; and when Billy was tired, Johnny bought in for a dead rat —and so on, hour after hour. And when the middle of the afternoon came, Tom had won many treasures. And he had not worked. He had had a nice idle time all the time, with plenty of company -and the fence had been whitewashed three times. If he hadn’t run out of whitewash, Tom would have owned everything belonging to his friends. He had discovered a great law of human action, namely, that in order to make a man or a boy want a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to get.15. AGoldie's SecretShe turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent heraway. No way, not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the nightbefore. "We're moving house.'; "No space for her any more with the baby coming." "Wenever really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present." People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautifuldogs I had ever seen.I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given hera more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardlyate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could doto make her happy, it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previousowner's. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by myside, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire. That's why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were outfor a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting veryrestless. Eventually I couldn't hold her any longer and she raced off down the roadtowards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when Isaw her licking (舔) the four puppies (幼犬) I started to feel sympathy towards them. "We didn't know what had happened to her," said the woman at the door. "I took herfor a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared." "She must have tried to come back to them and got lost," added a boy from behind her.I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I've got Nugget now, and she looks just like hermother. And I've learnt a good lesson: not to judge people.1. How did the author feel about Goldie when Goldie came to the house?A. Shocked.B. Sympathetic.C. Annoyed.D. Upset.2. In her first few days at the author's house, Goldie ______.A. felt worriedB. was angryC. ate a littleD. sat by the fire3 Goldie rushed off to a farmhouse one day because she ______.A. saw her puppiesB. heard familiar barkingC. wanted to leave the authorD. found her way to her old home4. The passage is organized in order of ______.A. timeB. effectivenessC. importanceD. complexityBOpen Letter to an EditorI had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently --- one who works for you. In fact, he's one of your best reporters. He wants to leave.Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume(简历) and photocopies of six stories thathe wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues(问题), approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me h e is one of your best. I'm sure you would hate to lose him. Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He hasa great assignment (分工), and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for youto keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you've given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys hisfreedom. So why is he looking for a way out?He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wantsto be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights. The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editorsusually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, andwhat the budget is.He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas intogreat ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he's doing and to help himturn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to reportit. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That's what you want for him, too, isn't it?So your reporter has set me thinking. Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists--- everyone --- is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demandingto reach their potential. If we can't do it, they'll find someone who can.5. What does the writer think of the reporter?A. Optimistic.B. Imaginative.C. Ambitious.D. Proud.6. The letter aims to remind editors that they should ______.A. keep their best reporters at all costsB. give more freedom to their reportersC. be aware of their reporters' professional developmentD. appreciate their reporters' working styles and attitudesCPacing and PausingSara tried to befriend her old friend Steve's new wife, but Betty never seemed tohave anything to say. While Sara felt Betty didn't hold up her end of the conversation, Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem hadto do with expectations about pacing and pausing.Conversation is a turn-taking game. When o ur habits are similar, there's no problem. But if our habits are different, you may start to talk before I'm finished or failto take your turn when I'm finished. That's what was happening with Betty and Sara.It may not be coincidental that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between turns, is British, and Sara, who expected relatively shorter pauses, is American.Betty often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter andfound herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland. And Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel. The general phenomenon, then, is that the small conversation techniques, like pacing and pausing, lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style but about personality and abilities. These habitual differences are often the basis for dangerous stereotyping (思维定式). And these social phenomena can have very personal consequences. For example, a woman from the southwestern part of the US went to livein an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel Department gottogether for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to break in --- and never found it. Although back home s he was considered outgoing and confident, in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the end of the year, she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up.That's why slight differences in conversational style --- tiny little things likemicroseconds of pause --- can have a great effect on one's life. The result in thiscase was a judgment of psychological problems --- even in the mind of the woman h erself, who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertiveness training.9. What did Sara think of Betty when talking with her?A. Betty was talkative.B. Betty was an interrupter.C. Betty did not take her turn.D. Betty paid no attention to Sara.10. According to the passage, who are likely to expect the shortest pauses betweenturns?A. Americans.B. Israelis.C. The British.D. The Finns.11. We can learn from the passage that ______.A. communication breakdown results from short pauses and fast pacingB. women are unfavorably stereotyped in eastern cities of the USC. one's inability to speak up is culturally determined sometimesD. one should receive training to build up one's confidence12. The underlined word "assertiveness" in the last paragraph probably means ______.A. being willing to speak one's mindB. being able to increase one's powerC. being ready to make one's own judgmentD. being quick to express one's ideas confidentlyDThe Cost of Higher EducationIndividuals (个人) should pay for their higher education.A university education is of huge and direct benefit to the individual. Graduatesearn more than non-graduates. Meanwhile, social mobility is ever more dependent onhaving a degree. However, only some people have it. So the individual, not thetaxpayers, should pay for it. There are pressing calls on the resources (资源) of the government. Using taxpayers' money to help a small number of people to earn highincomes in the future is not one of them.Full government funding (资助) is not very good for universities. Adam Smith workedin a Scottish university whose teachers lived off student fees. He knew and lookeddown upon 18th-century Oxford, where the academics lived comfortably off the incomereceived from the government. Guaranteed salaries, Smith argued, were the enemy ofhard work; and when the academics were lazy and incompetent, the students were similarly lazy.If students have to pay for their education, they not only work harder, but also demand more from their teachers. And their teachers have to keep them satisfied. If thatmeans taking teaching seriously, and giving less time to their own research interests, that is surely something to celebrate. Many people believe that higher education should be free because it is good for theeconomy (经济). Many graduates clearly do contribute to national wealth, but so doall the businesses that invest (投资) and create jobs. If you believe that thegovernment should pay for higher education because graduates are economically productive, you should also believe that the government should pay part of businesscosts. Anyone promising to create jobs should receive a gift of capital from thegovernment to invest. Therefore, it is the individual, not the government, who should pay for their university education.13. The underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refers to ______.A. taxpayersB. pressing callsC. college graduatesD. government resources14. The author thinks that with full government funding ______.A. teachers are less satisfiedB. students are more demandingC. students will become more competentD. teachers will spend less time on teaching15. The author mentions businesses in Paragraph 5 in order to ______.A. argue against free university educationB. call on them to finance students' studiesC. encourage graduates to go into businessD. show their contribution to higher education参考答案高BADAC DACCB CDBDA。

AOne night I was sitting in my room half-listening as my 15-year-old brother fought with my 12-year-old brother Kevin. I didn’t pay attention when Kevin rushed up the stairs with the hurt on his face.About 20 minutes later, as I was walking upstairs I heard Kevin crying inside the bathroom. I knocked on the door and asked, ―Hey!Kevin, do you want to talk?‖No response. I tried again, ―Why don’t you come out of there?‖Again, no response. So, joking around, I grabbed a stack of index cards and a pencil and wrote, ―If you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other.‖An hour later I was still sitting on the floor outside the bathroom with two stacks of index cards in front of me. One was blank and one was cards from Kevin on which he had translated all his yucky feelings into words for me. As I read one of Kevin’s notes, tears came to my eyes. It said, ―Nobody in this family cares about me. I’m not the youngest, and I’m not the oldest, a nd I’m not talented. Tommy thinks I’m stupid and Dad wishes he had the other Kevin as a kid because he’s better at basketball. And you’re never around to even notice me.‖Tears came to my eyes again as I wrote back to him. ―You know Kevin, I really do love you and I’m sorry I don’t always show it. I am here for you and you are loved in this family.‖There was no response for a while, but then I heard a tearing sound coming from inside the bathroom. Kevin, who had run out of index cards, wrote on a torn –up paper cup, ―Thanks.‖I wrote back ―For what?‖ It returned to me with ―Loving me‖ written on it. Can you imagine what would happen if all the software installed on your computer was made in USA?Gao Ling, 23, a civil servant:The motivation for 360 to start the fight is not in nocent, but it’s also true that QQ is enjoying ―monopoly‖ (垄断) status in China’s instant messaging market.Giants in the industry shouldn’t forget that they should serve users. Whatever the competition is, they should put the users’ interest in the first place.I will continue to use their service but I hope there are regulations to force IT giants to open doors and become compatible (能兼容的) with each other.Yao Jie, 27, an art teacher:I used QQ for nine years but switched to MSN when ―the 3Q fight‖ began. Tencent acts as if we can’t live without QQ. It seems th e company considers itself a policeman. But this is my computer and I have the final say about which software to use.Quitting QQ does not obviously affect my life. Everyone can survive with the absence of someone else, especially when the ―someone else‖ is just a chatting tool.Lin Xiang, 19, a university student:I’m angry with Tencent for stirring things up.One night after the ―war‖ broke out, my younger brother logged on his QQ Pet service and got a pop-up from QQ: ― Master, a bad guy called 360 wan ts to grab me away. I really don’t want to leave you. Please kill that bad guy 360.‖The competition between two companies is understandable but it has nothing to do with children. How can they fan resentment (愤恨) in the heart of a child?5. What do we kn ow about these people’s attitudes toward ― the 3Q fight‖?A. All of them are for QQ.B. All of them are for 360.C. Lin Xiang is for 360.D. Chen Guan is for QQ.6. From what Gao Ling said, we may infer that ______________.A. Lack of regulations may contribute to the tussle (争斗).B. 360 is right in starting ―the 3Q fight‖.C. Users’ interest should always be put in the first place.D. 360 is competing with QQ in instant messaging market.7. The underlined part ―I have the final say‖ is similar in meaning to _______________.A. I have to say something finallyB. I make the final decisionC. I tell people at lastD. I should speak in the end8. Why is Lin Xiang angry?A. ―The 3Q fight‖ has disturbed his daily life.B. He and his younger brother can’t log on the QQ Pe t service.C. Tencent company tries to make younger children hate 360.D. His younger brother’s QQ pet is not living happily because of a bad guy.CFrom the health point of view we are living in an amazing age.We are free from many of the most dangerous diseases.A large number of once deadly illnesses can now be cured by modem medicine. It is almost certain that one clay medicines will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases, The expectation of life has increased greatly. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable killing of men, women and children on the roads.Man vs the motor-cart It is a never-ending battle which man is losing.Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盘), his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man's very worst qualities.People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel They say, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-olds and completely selfish. All their hidden angers and disappointments seem to be brought to die surface by the act of driving. The surprising thing is that society smiles so gently on the motorist and seems to forgive his behavior.Everything is done for his convenience.Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is ruined by road networks; and the deaths become nothing more than a number every year, to be easily forgotten. It is high time a world rule was created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are unbelievably lax (不严格)and even the strictest are not strict enough.A rule which was universally accepted could only have an obviously beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should tie put through strict tests for safety each year.Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can damage a person's driving ability.Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist)should be made much stricter.Speed limits should be required on all roads.Governments should lay down safety specifications for car factories, as has been done in the USA.All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may not sound good enough. But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in reducing the number of deaths. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.9.What is the main idea of this passage?A.Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists.B.Thousands of people the world over are killed each year.C.The laws of some countries about driving are too lax.D.Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents.10.What does the author think of society toward motorists?A.Society laughs at the motorists.B.Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns.C.Victims of accidents are nothing.D.Society forgives their rude driving.11.Which of the followings is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents?A.Build more highways.B.Stricter driving tests.C.Test drivers every three years.D.Raise age limit and lay down safety specifications.12.The author's attitude towards the traffic situation is ______.A.positive B.unsatisfied C.appealing D.unclearDUndercover Boss Takes CEOs Back Down the Ladder of Success Undercover Boss is a new type of reality TV show. It’s new because it does not show off the rich and luxuri ous. It’s new because the main players are not greedy fame seekers. Put simply, it’s new, because, for the first time in reality TV, a show is focusing on the lower classes: the overworked, the underpaid—the inspiring army of the American Dream. The revenge-based show sends a wealthy CEO undercover in his or her company. Over the course of a week, a camera crew films the boss completing the tasks of an ordinary worker, working side-by-side with his lowest paid labourers. The first thing that attracts peopl e’s attention to the show is that the high-powered CEO is reduced to bumbling (拙劣地做) through basic tasks. But the real insights come from the workers and their touching stories. The blue collar employees who teach the CEOs how to clean toilets and make hamburgers are the heroes of the show. Their stories are moving and inspiring. At the end of the show, the CEO reveals his true identity and makes changes to the business in line with what he learned from the experience. In a recent episode, the owner of the fast food chain White Castle, David Rife, goes undercover. Rife shaves off his beard and wears an apron as he takes on various positions in one of his fast food restaurants. In the fast-paced kitchen, he struggles to remember orders and coordinate tasks. He rushes back-and-forth from the drink machine to the deep fryer to the grill (烤架), unable to put together a meal for a waiting customer.―I didn’t know this would be so hard,‖ says Rife to a hidden camera. ―I’m so tired. After just one day, I’m exhausted!‖Then he meets Donna, a female employee who has worked in the kitchen for eight years. She’s quick and efficient. She’s also recovering from a heart attack and working double shifts to support her disabled husband. Her emotional account of her life story is moving. At the end of the episode, Rife unveils himself to be the owner. He decides to give Donna a raise and a chance to spend more time with her husband.Undercover Boss isn’t about risk-takers willing to do anything to get a high-paying office job. It’s different. It shows the side of humanity we are more familiar with: people who show up to work every day to make ends meet. That’s not new in real life, but it’s new to prime-time TV.13. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. It tells a story of an undercover boss.B. It tells a story of Donna, a female employee.C. It introduces a new TV program.D. It advertises a fast food chain.14. According to the passage, Undercover Boss is a new type of reality TV show because of the following reasons except that____________.A. it shows how the bosses achieve their successB. the program doesn’t show off the wealthy and luxuriousC. the real heroes of the program are the overworked and the underpaid people.D. the program focuses on the ordinary working people.15. Donna’s life story has been intended for David Rife.C. David Rife could get so many tasks done at the same time after some basic training.D. Donna is a quick and efficient worker and she is also strong-willed.EIf I had to select a word that best describes the majority of American parents, that word would be guilt-ridden. How sad it is to see parents become the willing victims of the ―give-me game‖, only to discover that, no matter what they do, it isn’t enough. In the end, they are looked down upon for their lack of firmness and blamed when their spoiled children get into trouble. With this in mind, I shall first answer this question: ―Wha t do parents owe their children?‖ and I shall start with what they don’t owe them.Parents don’t owe their children every minute of their day and every ounce of their energy. They don’t owe round-the-clock car service, singing lessons, tennis lessons, an expensive car when they reach sixteen, or a trip to Europe when they graduate.I take the firm position that parents do not owe their children a college education. If they can afford it, fine. But they must not feel guilty if they can’t. If the children rea lly want to go, they’ll find a way. There are plenty of loans and scholarships for the bright and eager who can’t afford to pay. After children marry, their parents do not owe them a house or money for the furniture. They do not have an obligation to baby-sit their grandchildren when the parents were on vacation. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor, not an obligation. In my opinion, parents do not owe their children an inheritance, no matter how much money they have. One of the surest ways to produce a loafer is to let children know that their future is assured.Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal. One of their chief obligations is to give their children a sense of personal worth, for self-esteem is the basis of a good mental health.Parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline. The parents who say ―No‖ when other parents say ―Yes‖ sends a double message. He is also saying: ―I love you, and I am ready to risk your anger, because I don’t want you to get into trouble.‖Parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal belongings. If a mother feels that she must read her daughter’s diary to know what is going on, the communication between them must be pretty bad.Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law.No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the children something. And if you give him his due, he’ll have something of value to pass along to your grandchildren.17. According to the author, .A. parents ought to send their children to college as a dutyB. p arents needn’t feel guilty if they are unable to send their children to collegeC. if they say ―No‖, parents will surly make their children angryD. parents must support their children even after their marriage18. The underlined word ―loafer‖ most p robably refers to .A. a poorly educated personB. a well educated personC. a hard-working personD. a lazy person19. The author’s attitude towards the parents is.A. angryB. pitifulC. disappointedD. satisfied20. The writer of this passage mainly wants to tell us .A. why children look down upon their parentsB. the difference between duties of the parents and the childrenC. over devotion to the children results in trouble for the parents themselvesD. children should depend on no one but themselves1—4 CABC 5—8 DABC 9—12 DDAB 13—16 CAAD 17—20 BDBC。

2012高考英语二轮复习专题限时训练专题2 阅读理解34(25分钟)AThere is, for many of us, a moment in life when we make a choice that changes us forever. This moment marks a turning point, when we realize that the life we're living is not a mirror of who we really are.For some, the moment comes as a result of something dramatic: the sudden loss of a job, or the death of a loved one. For others, they have to deal with difficult situations, such as financial hardship. In these challenging times, it's more critical(关键时刻的) than ever for us to seize the possibility of positive change. As I travel and talk to people about their lives, I often see a distant, vacant look in their eyes -- a look that says “I’m so busy trying to survive my life that no soul left to live it”.As a result, we end up feeling lonely. Yet we keep on going the way we've been going. We tolerate high levels of stress at work, take important relationships for granted, or put our health needs on hold. We get so caught up in the details of living that our busyness becomes an excuse from the inner voice that begs us to listen. When you finally pay attention to that little voice and begin to make even small changes, you will slowly improve yourself. To start positive change, you need the power of your mind. I've come up with a five-step strategy that will help you. You will be able to identify what you want and then go after it. It's easier than you might think.1. Reset your happiness set point. Don't limit yourself! When I decided that I wanted more control over my life, I set goals in physical, emotional, financial, professional, material, and play. I challenged myself to consider every possible choice. Imagine things you've never believed you could achieve. Don't let your past determine your future.2. Trust your courage. Too often, when you're first learning to take control of your life, you doubt yourself. It's important to develop a strong connection with your innerguidance system. I've heard many stories about the persistent voice inside your head.3. Take action. Once you have set goals, adjusted your beliefs, and got ready, you can start making things happen. Again, turn to those people you respect -- the ones achieving what you desire -- for support and guidance. They will both inspire you and give you practical advice on what steps you need to take.4. Have faith. Believe that the positive energy of grace will support your efforts to improve your life. When you've done all you can, let go and trust that the right result will occur. When we have faith, we give up the need to be in control, and we set ourselves up to actually enjoy the process of change.5. Be patient. This can be the toughest step. It's not easy to trust that your life will improve in a best way. Remind yourself of the benefits of patience. In my experience, those life changes are always worth the wait.1. What does the author intend to say in the second paragraph?A. The start of some turning points in one’s life is caused by crisis.B. Loss of a job or the death of a loved one are all dramatic things.C. No one can live a life without any turning points.D. No one can predict his future of being good or not.2. In the author’s opinion, we should ______________.A. adjust our beliefs from time to timeB. always control ourselves for anythingC. keep on going the way we are goingD. seize the challenging times to live an active life3. The author suggests that when setting your happiness set points, you should _______.A. know the limitation of your set pointB. build self-confidence without doubtC. limit your goals in different waysD. consider every possible choice with care4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. When you've done all you can, you may believe that the right result will occur.B. When you set goals, and take action, it is possible to make things happen.C. When you first learn to take charge of your life, you will always doubt yourself.D. If things do not happen in a way that is best, patience is always worth the wait.ADBCB“To be or not to be”.Outside the Bible, these six words are the most famous in all the literature of the world. They were spoken by Hamlet when he was thinking aloud, and they are the most famous words in Shakespeare because Hamlet was speaking not only for himself but for every thinking man and woman. To be or not to be----to live or not to live, to live richly and abundantly and eagerly, or to live dully and meanly and scarcely.A philosopher once wanted to know whether he was alive or not, which is a good question for everyone to put to himself occasionally. He answered it by saying, “I think, therefore I am.”But the best definition of existence I ever saw was one written by another philosopher who said, “To be is to be in relations.”If this is true, then the more relations a living thing has, the more it is alive. To live abundantly means simply to increase the range and intensity (强度)of our relations.Unfortunately, we are so constituted that we get to love our routine. But other than our regular occupation, how much are we alive? If you are interested only in your regular occupation, you are alive only to that extent. So far as other things are concerned----poetry and prose, music, pictures, sports unselfish friendships, politics, international affairs----you are dead.On the contrary, it is true that every time you acquire a new interest----even more, a new accomplishment----you increase your power of life.No one who is deeply interested in different kinds of subjects can remain unhappy. The real pessimist is the person who has lost interest.Bacon said that a man dies as often as he loses a friend. But we gain new life by contacts with new friends, and new ideas and thoughts, too.Where your thoughtsare, there will be your life also.If your thoughts are limited only to your business, only to your physical welfare, only to your narrow circle of the town in which you live, then you live in a narrow restricted life. But if you are interested in the characters of a good novel, then you are living with those highly interested people; if you listen intently to fine music, you are always away from immediate surroundings and living in a world of passion and imagination. To be or not to be ---- to live intensely and richly, or merely to exist, that depends on ourselves.Let us widen and intensify our relations. While we live, let us live.1.What does the author mainly want to do by this passage?A.Argue against an idea.B.Put forward an idea.C.Introduce some famous sayings.D.Explain some famous sayings.2.What does the underlined word “pessimist” most probably mean?A.Somebody who always expects the worst to happen.B.Somebody who is always interested in making new friends.C.Somebody who always lives in a world of passion and imagination.D.Somebody who likes to live a rich and abundant life.3.Which of the following behaviors is most probably NOT encouraged by the author?A.Thinking more than your own business.B.Caring only about your physical welfare.C.Reading good novels.D.Listening to fine music.4.What is the main idea of the passage?A.To be or not to be, that is a question.B.I think, therefore I am.C.To be is to be in relations.D.A man dies as often as he loses a friend.BABCCThe diversity of the original American Indian settlers was not quite as great as that of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries when waves of European, Asian and unwilling African immigrants arrived on American shores. However, the First Americans did have more far-going origins that were ever suspected. For example, Brace’s studies ha ve revealed that the Blackfoot, Iroquois, and other tribes from Minnesota, Michigan, Ontario, and Massachusetts came down from the Jomon, a prehistoric people of Japan. The Inuit in the far north and tribal groups who once lived down the Eastern seaboard into Florida appear to be a later branch from the trunk of the Jomon family tree. The Athabaskan-speaking people from the Yukon and northern-western Canada, who spread as far south as Arizona and northern Mexico, appear to trace their origins to China. “The ir facial shapes link them more closely to the living Chinese than to any other population in either part of the world,”says Brace.Johanna Nichols, a Professor of Slavic languages and literature at the University of California at Berkeley, says that new evidence from native languages throughout the New World strongly suggests that humans have been in the Americas since as early as 40,000 BC. She says that it is only along the west coast that languages appear to have come from immigrants who arrived after the ice age, 14,000 years ago.Nichols also has some different ideas about the direction in which the country was settled. Breaking with the traditional view of migrations, she says that the inside of North America was colonized not only from Siberia but also from the south. To bolster her argument for an early settlement date, Nichols points to findings from the Monte Verde site in southern Chile. It has been dated at 12,500 years old, which means the area was occupied during the last ice age. And, the Monte Verde people would have needed at least 6,500 years to travel from Alaska to Chile. Yet, that only takes us back to about 19,000 years ago. Her research suggests a very high degree of language diversity is something that happens only with time. She insists that the approximately 150 distinct native American language families we know oftoday must have required at least 35,000 years to develop.1. In the first paragraph the writer uses the word “unwilling” to show that _______.A. the Africans came against the will of most AmericansB. the Africans came without the approval of their parentsC. the Africans were taken here against their own willD. the Europeans who came at the time didn’t want the Africans to cometogether2. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the Athabaskan-speakingpeople?A. They were related to people living in Japan in prehistoric times.B. They were a branch from the trunk of the Jomon family tree.C. They have no links to any other people.D. They were thought to have certain links to the ancestors of the Chinesepeople.3. The underlined word bolster in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _______.A. useB. haveC. supportD. build4. From the passage we can know _______.A. people in the Americas today are believed to have probably come down onlyfrom the northB. Nichols strongly suggests that humans have lived in the Americas for about6,500 yearsC. Nichols supports the traditional ideas about the direction in which the countrywas settledD. it surely takes a very long time for language diversity to come aboutCDCD。

Here are some responses:Mark Galeassi of Kansas City, Missouri: This is the best move for both parties. Yahoo has the ideas and Microsoft has the money to finally market these ideas correctly. Microsoft and Yahoo are a perfect fit and the deal will be good for consumers. Scott G. of New Jersey: I was a Yahoo user for years along with Hotmail from Microsoft. Then Google came along. Google Earth, Google Toolbar and Gmail. Google is so innovative(立异的)with everything they do. Yahoo and Microsof, the same old story. I don't think the merger will do anything for either company except improve the Yahoo shareholders' bank accounts.Michael Glosser of Estero, Florida: Right now, Yahoo offers a lot of features and tools at no cost for all different levels of Internet users. Microsoft seeks nothing but profit. Undoubtedly, they'll do nothing other than find ways to start removing Yahoo's formerly non-priced features. Microsoft's greed will ruin the great thing that Yahoo currently is. Toni Suarez of Hacienda Heights California: Perhaps it would bring better high technology innovations to e-mail and help in researching and developing a better Internet! Antonio Simmons of Parkville, Maryland: Microsoft purchasing Yahoo would be nothing more than an attempt from Microsoft to further impose upon the users their poor-quality software and obtain more wealth for the company. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time of which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation ----varies considerably from person to person. It also varies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness.Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text.12. The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except ________.A. one’s familiarity with the text.B. one’s purpose in readingC. the length of a group of wordsD. lighting and tiredness13. The author may believe that reading ______.A. requires a reader to take in more words at each fixationB. requires a reader to see words more quicklyC. demands an deeply-participating mindD. demands more mind than eyes14. Which of the following is NOT true?A. The visual span is a word or a group of words we see each time.B. Many experts began to question the efficiency of eye training.C. The emphasis on the purely visual aspects is misleading.D. The eye training will help readers in reading a continuous text.15. AMen have always believed that they are smarter than women. Now, a study has found that while this is certainly true, men also have to deal with the fact that they are also more stupid than the fairer sex.In the study, scientists measured the IQ of 2500 brothers and sisters and they found an uneven number of men not only in the top two percent, but also in the bottom two percent. The study's participants were tested on science, maths, English and mechanical abilities.Though there were twice as many men as women in the smartest group, there were also twice as many men among the dolts. The aggregate scores of men and women were similar. One of the study's authors, psychology professor Timothy Bates, said that the phenomenon may be because men have always been expected to be high achievers and women have been restricted to spend more time taking care of their home."The female developmental program may be tilted more towards ensuring survival and the safety of the middle ground.," the Daily Mail quoted Professor Bates, of Edinburgh University, as saying. The research tallies with past results that men were more likely than women to receive first class University degrees or thirds and women secured the seconds. It has been said that men are more ready to take risk when it comes to academics. Women have always found to be steadier in their learning.A past study has shown that women are securing more firsts and seconds, while men are continuing to receive more thirds. The argument for the change is that the increase of coursework at the cost of exams favors women's steady approach.1. The study is known as the Abecedarian(初步的) Project. It involved more than one-hundred young children from poor families in North Carolina.Half of the children attended an all-day program at a high-quality childcare center. The center offered educational, health and social programs. Children took part in games and activities to increase their thinking and language skills and social and emotional development. The program also included health foods for the childrenThe children attended the program from when they were a few weeks old until the age of five years. The other group of children did not attend the childcare center. After the age of five, both groups attended public school.Researchers compared the two groups of children. When they were babies, both groups had similar results in tests for mental and physical skills. However, from the age of eighteen months, the children in the educational child care program did much better in tests. The researchers tested the children again when they were twelve and fifteen years old. The tests found that the children who had been in the childcare center continued to have higher average test results. These children did much better on tests of reading and mathematics.A few years ago, organizers of the Abecedarian Project tested the students again. At the time, each student was twenty-one years old. They were tested for thinking and educational ability, employment, parenting and social skills. The researchers found that the young adults who had the early education still did better in reading and mathematics tests. They were more than two times as likely to be attending college or to have completed college. In addition, the children who received early education were older on average, when their first child was born. The study offers more evidence that learning during the first months and years of life is important for all later development. The researchers of the Abecedarian Project believe their study shows a need for lawmakers to spend money on public early education. They believe these kinds of programs could reduce the number of children who do not complete school and are unemployed.6. The Abecedarian Project has lasted______.A. almost one yearB. about five yearsC. more than 20 yearsD. no more than 15 years7. Those who had been in the child-care center_______ compared with those who hadn’t.A. have their children at later agesB. have no parenting or social skillsC. are poorer at reading and mathematicsD. get more help from other people8.What don’t we know about the Abecedarian Project after reading the text?A. How important early education is for poor children.B. What the children learned at the child-care center.C. How many children are involved in the Abecedarian Project.D. Whether lawmakers will spend money on public early education.9. The study if Abecedarian project shows that early education____.A. leads to a lower birthrateB. costs a lot of moneyC. is not important for later developmentD. can improve the life of poor childrenCNever-say-die AttitudeIn 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However, bridge building experts throughtout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea.It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington,an up-and-coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge. The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tregic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with certain account of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.“We told them so.”“Crazy men and their crazy dreams.”“It’s foolish to chase wild visions.”Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scraped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap, Washington was never discouraged and still had burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but theywere too daunted by the task.As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the top of the trees outside for just a moment. It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.He touched his wife’s arm with that finger, indicating to her he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife’s arm until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute of one’s indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 years patiently decoded the message of her husband and told the engineers what to do.Perhaps this is one of the best example of a never-say-die attitude that overcomesa terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.10. Why did the bridge building experts think that Washington’s idea could not be done?A. because the poor technology at that timeB. because it was not practical and on one had done it beforeC. because they didn’t believe in John RoebelingD. because they did n’t accept new ideas.11. What happed on the Rebellings when the project started only a few months?A. Washington died and Roebeling handicappedB. Roebeling died and Washington handicappedC. Their high skill in professionDRepressionToday, as I was relaxing at the beach, I couldn't help but eavesdrop(窃听,偷听)on a conversation four high school kids were having on the beach blanket next to me. Their conversation was about making a positive difference in the world. And it went something like this…"It's impossible to make a difference unless you're a huge corporation or someone with lots of money and power," one of them said."Yeah man," another replied. "My mom keeps telling me to move mountains –to speak up and stand up for what I believe. But what I say and do doesn't even get noticed.I just keep answering to ‘the man’ and then I get slapped back(山谷回声) in place by him when I step out of line.""Repression…" another snickered.I smiled because I knew exactly how they felt. When I was their age, I was certain I was being repressed and couldn't possibly make a difference in this world. And I actually almost got expelled from(驱逐,开除) school once because I openly expressed how repressed I felt in the middle of the principals’ office.I Have A DreamSuddenly, one of the kids noticed me eavesdropping and smiling. He sat up, looked at me and said, "What? Do you disagree?" Then as he waited for a response, the other three kids turned around too.Rather than arguing with them, I took an old receipt(收据) out of my wallet, ripped (撕,扯) it into four pieces, and wrote a different word on each piece. Then I crumbled the pieces into little paper balls and handed a different piece to each one of them."Look at the word on the paper I just gave you and don't show it to anyone else." The kids looked at the single word I had handed each of them and appeared confused. "You have two choices," I told them. "If your word inspired you to make a difference in this world, then hold onto it. If not, give it back to me so I can recycle the paper." They all returned their words.I scooted(快走) over, sat down on the sand next to their beach blanket and laid out the four words that the students had returned to me so that the words combined to form the simple sentence, "I have a dream.""Dude, that's Martin Luther King Jr.," one of the kids said."How did you know that?" I asked."Everyone knows Martin Luther King Jr." the kid snarled. "He has his own national holiday, and we all had to memorize his speech in school a few years ago." "Why do you think your teachers had you memorize his speech?" I asked."I don't really care!" the kid replied. His three friends shook their heads in agreement. "What does this have to do with us and our situation?""Your teachers asked you to memorize those words, just like thousands of teachersaround the world have asked students to memorize those words, because they have inspired millions of repressed people to dream of a better world and take action to make their dreams come true. Do you see where I'm going with this?""Man, I know exactly what you're trying to do and it's not going to work, alright?" the fourth kid said, who hadn't spoken a word until now. "We're not going to get all inspired and emotional about something some dude said thirty years ago. Our world is different now. And it's more screwed up than any us can even begin to imagine, and there's little you or I can do about it. We're too small, we're nobody." TogetherI smiled again because I once believed and used to say similar things. Then after holding the smile for a few seconds I said, "On their own, ‘I' or ‘have’ or ‘a’ or ‘dream’ are just words. Not very compelling or inspiring. But when you put them together in a certain order, they create a phrase that has been powerful enough to move millions of people to take action – action that changed laws, perceptions, and lives. You don't need to be inspired or emotional to agree with this, do you?" The four kids shrugged and struggled to appear totally indifferent, but I could tell they were listening intently. "And what's true for words is also true for people,"I continued. "One person without help from anyone else can't do much to make a sizable difference in this crazy world - or to overcome all of the various forms of repression (抑制,压抑) that exist today. But when people get together and unite to form something more powerful and meaningful then themselves, the possibilities are endless.Together is how mountains are moved. Together is how small people make a big difference.15.Why were the kids repressed?A. Because they were scolded by their teachersB. Because they lacked confidence of making a difference in the worldC. Because they didn’t have lots of money or power.D. Because one of them almost got expelled from school.16.What did the writer do when one of the kids noticed him eavesdropping?A .He argued with them.B. He played a game with them.C. AMost of us long for relationships in which we are loved and accepted. Our heart s’ desire is to give and receive love in relationships that make us feel that even if others disagree with what we do or say, they still love us, accept us, and appreciate what we give to the world. Quiet time can really make a difference in your life.Despite what your mind may be telling you, you can have love with no limits. Going around in the U.S., I found that American youth do not really care about theirappearance. The French girls will just think about rather than really do this kind of thing because they are too shy and lacking in self-confidence.To finish, I noticed that in American classes, when pupils want to say or ask something, they just do it. In general, they don’t really care how the others will judge them. In France, it’s not the same case. If somebody wants to ask something, he/she will think about it before speaking up. I appreciate the freedom in Americans’ behavior, ideas, and ways of expressing themselves.(改编)5. American young people _______.A. are just interested in people’s clothesB. show more interest in people’s ideasC. care more about their weightD. are more concerned about appearance(改编)6. In three days, before he was found out, he took £200,000 from nine different banks. Amazingly, he had already spent more than half of this before the police caught up with him. Because he is also under 18 the banks have kissed goodbye to a lot of money, and several cashiers havelost their jobs.Should we admire these youngsters for being enterprising and showing initiative or condemn them for their dishonesty? The germs of influenza(流感)can only exist in an acid condition, he explained. He lay still in the bed and seemed very detached(超然的;冷漠的)from what was going on.I read aloud from Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates(海盗);but I could see he was not following what I was reading."How do you feel, Schatz?" I asked him."Just the same, so far," he said.I sat at the foot of the bed and read to myself while I waited for it to be time to give another capsule.
