From day one, I knew that you were going to be my favorite thing. I got you a few months after my sixth birthday. I was old enough to care for you and I tried to take good care of you.
Dad’s face was filled with joy every time he looked at you. Mom didn’t give you as much attention as you wanted, but I think she loved you. She was just too busy. My sister loved you, too. You were like our brother.
I’m sorry for yelling at you when you barked sometimes. You never yelled at me for talking, so I apologize. You always let me tease you and run around with you. And sometimes, you were my shoulder to cry on. The best feeling was having you greet me at the door when I returned. You kissed on my face. It showed me you loved me as much as I would always love you.
When you were 9, you became sick. When I got my mom’s call, I was worried and afraid. I hurried home and saw my sister crying. I thought it was the end of the world, but luckily it wasn’t. You became better the next day.
This fall, I had to leave for college. You were already 13 years old. I knew that leaving you after spring break could have possibly been my last time seeing you, and it was. Two months later, I lost you---my best friend.
Thank you for always being my best friend. I love you, buddy. Rest easy.

Many English learners have difficulty deciding what kind of English accent they want to have. A US accent, perhaps imitates(模仿) a Hollywood star speaker? Or maybe you want to imitate the British accent of a BBC news reader?
Young British people find the US accent attractive while young US people like a British accent. Especially when the person speaking is of the opposite sex(异性)! Let’s listen to what they have to say.
Stephen Yang, 17, from London, UK
A US accent is cute, especially when a girl spea ks it. Whether it’s Jessia Alba speaking or the girl-next-door, the way US girls speak has a sweet tingle(感觉) that is really fashionable. A girl from Texas recently moved into our neighborhood. Her Texan twang(鼻音) had all the boys here on their knees within seconds of meeting her.
To me, accents reflect the attitudes, characteristics(特征)and lifestyles of the people.
Jennifer Sun, 16, from New Jersey, US
From watching English actors like Daniel Radcliffe, my friends and I have developed a soft spot(好感) for British men. Some are attracted to the qualities of English males, while others admire their sense of style.
Everyone, however, agrees that the most attractive aspect of an English man is his accent. For example, many American girls watch Harry Potter movies over and over again just to listen to the actors speak .
The English accent seems almost like art.

Are you carrying too much on your bag at school? I'm sure lots of children of your age will say “Yes”.Not only the students in China have this problem, but children in the United States also have heavy school bags.
Doctors are starting to worry that younger and younger students are having back and neck problems as a result of school bags being too heavy for them.
“It's hard for me to go upstairs with my bag because it's so heavy,” said Rick Hammond,an 11-year-old student in the US.
Rick is among students who have common school bags with two straps(带子) to carry them, but many other students choose rolling(有滚轮的) bags.
But even with rolling bags, getting up stairs and buses is still a problem for children. Many of them have hurt their backs and necks because of the heavy school bags.
But how much is too much? Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own body weight(重量).
Scott Batch,a back doctor, said children under Grade 4 should stay with 10%.But it is also important that older children don't stay with over 15%,because their bodies are still growing. “Children are losing their balance(平衡) and falling down with their school bags,” he said. Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take home library books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using pieces of paper or thin workbooks for students to take home.
One of the best answers is,as some children said,to have no homework at all!

Liverpool city council(市政厅) want to clear the city of fat pigeons. They say that people are feeding the birds, which makes them fat. The pigeons get bigger because their normal diet would consist of seeds and insects, not high-fat junk food they are eating in the city center.
The council wants people to know that everyone who feeds the pigeons is responsible for the streets being so crowded with these birds. They hope to encourage the birds to move away from the city center and into parks and open spaces.
Ten robotic birds have been brought into the city center to scare the pigeons away and visitors are asked not to give the pigeons any food. The mechanical birds—known as “robops”—will sit on the roofs of buildings. They can be moved around to different locations. They look like a peregrine falcon(游隼), make noises and flap their wings to scare the pigeons. They hope that the pigeons will go away before the city becomes the European Capital of Culture in two years.
