13、Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.
Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.
One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby. The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.
Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children. Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities an d did not interfere (干涉) unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression (消沉).
The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.
These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

B.To prove that babies can learn before they are born.
C.To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies.
D.To indica te early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills.
3.Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?
A.The children of women who did not suffer from depression.
B.The children of depressed but caring mothers.
C.The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

When Leonardo DiCaprio stepped onto the stage to accept the Academy Award for Best Actor on February 28, he received a rare standing ovation(鼓掌欢呼).
After five acting nominations and 22 years of disappointed hopes since his first nomination(for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993), the 41-year-old actor finally won his first Oscar for his effort in the film The Revenant, which hit Chinese cinemas on March 18.

in dead animals, and ate a bison liver. For over half the film, he crawled(爬) on the ground. An article in Life Week wrote, “Compared with DiCaprio’s terrible experience in The Revenant, R obinson Crusoe’s seems as easy and comfortable as a vacation.”
His effort was accepted by the Academy. After he has finally earned the US’ top acting award, DiCaprio is now working harder, turning to different challenges.

15、We all know that lying (说谎) is wrong. But do you know that it is bad for both your physical and mental health? A recent study shows that telling fewer lies helps people physically and mentally.
“For ten weeks, 110 people aged from 18 to 71 were teste d to see the relationship between the number of lies they told and their health,” said Anita Kelly, a professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. “When they lied more, their health declined,” said Kelly.
Researchers divided the people into two groups. Group A was told to avoid telling any lie for any reason to anyone. They may omit (忽略) the truth, refuse to answer questions, and keep secrets, but they can’t say anything that they know are not true. Group B was not told anything like this.
Over the study period, when people in Group A told fewer lies in a week than they did in other weeks, they experienced fewer health problems such as sore throats and headaches. Professor Linda Stroh said, “When you find that you don’t lie, you have less stress (压力).” The results of past research show that ea ch American tells about 11 lies a week. In both groups, when people lied less during a week, they reported better physical and mental health during that period.
“It’s certainly a good thing to have people be more honest,” said Robert Feldman of the University of Massachusetts. “It may improve our mental health, but I don’t think it can improve our physical health.”

16、When you watch 3D movies or TV,you have to wear a special pair of glasses. The 3D glasses make the images from the screen look like they are there in the room with you.
Three-dimensional,or 3D,means having three dimensions(维度): width, height and depth.3D technology(技术)is based on the way the human brain(大脑)and eyes work.Because thepupilsof a person's eyes are about 1.5era apart(分开),when we look at something, each eye sees it from a different angle(角度).Our eyes send the two images to our brain, and the brain puts them together. The small difference between the image from the right eye and the image from the left eye allows us to see depth.
When we view pictures and television in two dimensions, each eye gets the same information. That is because the image has no real depth, and there is only one of viewing it.So the goal of 3D technology is to get a different image into each of the viewer. It uses two film projectors. One projects a left eye image and the other projects a right image. The 3D glasses allow us to see a different image in each eye.
While watching 3D films,we feel that we are in the same environment as the things we're watching. However,it also has its
disadvantages. The 3D glasses work by controlling the amount of light that reaches the eyes.It makes the screen look darker. What's more, people with eye problems may get headaches if they spend too much time watching 3D movies, because their brains need to work harder to "read" the images.

19、Hello, teachers and schoolmates. It’s my honor to be here and talk about my views about how to keep safe at school.
I t’s necessary to obey the rules in P.E class or in the swimming pool. We shouldn’t carry anything dangerous with us, like knives. After class, we’d better try our best to guard against any possible danger. Please don’t play dangerous games or chas e each ot her. It’s impolite to bully classmates who are short or small. Sometimes we may also feel stressed. Listening to music and doing some sports will make it easier for us to relax ourselves.
When we are in trouble, we can always ask our teachers for help. I am sure they are willing to offer advice. Besides, posters can be put up to help students know more about how to keep safe at school. If everyone can pay more attention to safety, we are sure to have a safe and wonderful school life.。
