一、单元单词
1.involve vt.
〔1〕使卷入,使陷入,牵涉;牵连(常与in连用):
e.g.be involved in trouble 卷入纠纷
be involved in disaster 陷入不幸
Don’t involve me in your quarrel!
不要把我牵扯进你们的争吵中!
〔2〕包含;涉及;使不得不
e.g.a task which involves much difficulty 困难重重的任务
This lesson involves a lot of work.
这一课需要做的工作有很多。

His work involves occasional journeys.
他的工作偶尔需要出差旅行。

Taking the job involves living abroad.选择做那份工作就得旅居国外。

〔3〕使专注,使忙于[(+in)]
e.g.He was involved in writing his novel.
他在聚精会神地写他的小说。

She was involved in working out a plan.
他专心致志地制订方案。

〔4〕有时表示“参加〞:
e.g.All the children were involved in the school play.
所有的孩子都参加了排练的剧。

〔5〕与with构成短语,表示“和……混在一起〞,“和……有密切联系〞e.g.Do not involve youself with those people.
不要和那些人混在一起。

He became involved with criminals(罪犯).
他与罪犯有密切联系。

2.prove vt.& vi. (proved;proved 或 proven)
〔1〕证明,证实(vt.)
①跟名词或代词
e.g.He has proved his courage in battle.
他已在战斗中证明了自己的勇气。

The lawyer proved the innocence of his client.
律师证实了他的当事人的清白。

The little boy has proved his cleverness in the television quiz.
这个小男孩在这次电视知识测验中证实了他的聪明。

②跟从句
e.g.I’ll prove to the world that he was right.
我将向世人证明他是对的。

Facts have proved that the creative power of the people knows no limits.事实证明人民的创造力是无穷的。

③跟复合结构
e.g.prove oneself worthy of confidence 证明有信用,不负信赖He had proved himself a good boy.
他已经证明了自己是一个不错男孩。

On the long journey he proved himself to be an amusing company.在长途旅行中,他证明自己是一个有趣的伴侣。

〔2〕证明是;后来事实说明是(link-.,vi.)
①跟形容词(或to be + 形容词)
e.g.The rumor proved (to be) true.
这谣传结果是真的。

My advice proved (to be) wrong.
我的意见证明是错的。

The method / drug proved (to be) highly effective.
这个方法/这种药证明是非常有效的。

②跟名词(或to be + 名词)
e.g.He proved (to be) a very useful friend.
后来事实说明他是一个非常有用的朋友。

The plan proved (to be)the best one.
那个方案被证明是最好的方案。

3.benefit
〔1〕用作名词,表示“利益,好处;优势〞[C][U]:
e.g.a public benefit 公益
be of benefit to the people 对人民有好处
The new hospital will be a great benefit to the town.成的医院将给全城带来莫大好处。

This dictionary will be of great benefit to me.
这部字典将对我有很大裨益。

It is said Yogo is of great benefit to human health.据说瑜伽功对人体健康有极大好处。

I did it for his benefit.
我做这个是为了帮助他。

〔2〕用作及物动词,表示“对……有益,有益于〞。

e.g.The sea air will benefit you.
海边的空气对你有益。

〔3〕用作及物动词,表示“受益,得到好处〞(常和from连用,有时和by连用):
e.g.The plants benefited from the rain.
植物得益于这场雨。

We benefit from daily exercises.
我们得益于每天做操。

They benefited greatly by this frank talk.
这次坦率的谈话使他们获益匪浅。

习惯用语:(be) of benefit to 对……有好处
for the benefit of 为了……的利益
4.experience n.
〔1〕经验,体验(多作不可数名词,间或作可数名词,表示某种经验):
e.g.Experience is the mother of wisdom.
经验是智慧之母。

Experience is the best teacher.
经验是最好的老师。

Experience teaches.;Experience does it.
经验给训;经验给人智慧。

You have had much experience in teaching English.
你教英语有很多经验。

She had no experience of life at all.
她毫无生活经验。

〔2〕经历,阅历,所经历的事(作可数名词)
e.g.Please tell us your experiences in America.
请你告诉我们你在美的经历。

Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man.
昨天下午,弗兰克·霍金斯给我讲述他年轻时的经历。

I had a rather odd experience the other day.
前些天我经历过一件相当奇怪的事。

习惯用语:gain experience in ... 获得……经验
learn by [from,through] experience 从经验到[懂得]
man of experience 有阅历[见识]的人
as a matter of experience 根据经验
by/from experience 凭经验;从经验中
〔3〕用作动词,表示“经历;体验;感受〞:
e.g.to experience fear 经历恐惧
Some of the students had experienced what hardships meant before they entered the university.
有些生在进入之前体验过艰苦的生活。

The city experienced over 2,000 such incidents last year.
去年这座城市发生过二千次以上这类事件。

He experienced a pang of sadness.
他感到一阵悲哀。

Thousands of people in that area are experiencing hunger.

1.make the best use of 充分利用
e.g.To make the best use of the responsibility system, the following measures are essential.

Once they are here,we should make the best use of their skills.

2.used to 过去时常;过去曾(而现在不再)做
e.g.John used to smoke.
约翰过去抽烟(现在不抽了)。

It used to be 80.
以前是八十啊。

We used to grow peanuts.
我们过去是种花生的(现在不种了)。

He used to be a middle school teacher.
他曾经是一位老师。

(现在不是了)
习惯用语:It used to be said that… 过去人们常说……
There used to be… 过去曾有……
比拟:be used to“习惯于〞,后接名词或动名词。

be亦可用get, become替换:
e.g.The astronauts soon got used to the condition of weightlessness.太空人很快就习惯了失重状态。

I am used to travelling by air and only on one occasion have I ever felt frightened.
我习惯了乘飞机旅行,只有一次我可给吓怕了。

You must get used to getting up early.
你必须习惯于早起。

I am used to walking to school.
我习惯走路上学。

3.account for
〔1〕说明;解释
e.g.Can you account for all these absences?
你能说明你缺席的原因吗。

How do you account for the accident?
你如何解释这个事故?
That will account for his strange behavior.
这可以说明他为什么有这样奇特的行为。

Can you account for why our team lost?
你能解释我们队输的原因吗?
He could not account for his foolish mistake.
他无法解释他所犯的荒唐的错误。

〔2〕对……负有责任
e.g.Who will have to account for the misprints in the dictionary?谁必须对字典中的印刷错误负责?
e.g.Cotton account for 70% of our export.棉花占我们出口的70%。

4.in contrast to / with 与……相比;与……形成比照/对照
e.g.In contrast with his brothers, Tom is rather short.
与几位兄弟相比,汤姆的个子相当矮。

His white hair was in sharp contrast to his dark skin.
他的白发同他的黑皮肤形成鲜明的比照。

In contrast (to most Asians), Americans tend to spend more than they have. (与大多数亚人)相反,人倾向超前消费。

5.in comparison with 与……相比
e.g.He is quite tall in comparison with his classmates.
与他的同学相比,他相当高。

Her talents stand out in comparison with the others.
和其他那些人比起来,她的才能很突出。

The tallest buildings in London are small in comparison with those in New York.

6.be aware of 知道,觉察到
〔1〕后接名词或动名词:
e.g.I was not aware of the fire.
我没有意识到火。

She was not aware of having done wrong.
她没有意识到做错了事。

He doesn’t seem to be aware o f the coldness of their attitude towards his appeal.
他好象没有意识到对他呼吁,态度冷淡。

〔2〕有时接how引起的从句
e.g.I was too sleepy to be aware how cold it was.
我太困了以至感觉不到天有多冷。

We were quite aware (of) how you would respond to our terms.
我们十分清楚你们对我们提出的条件肯会有什么反。
