Nathan Sawaya’s childhood was a lot of fun. He drew cartoons, wrote stories, and played with plastic toy bricks (积木). His grandparents bought his first set of toy bricks when he was five years old and he’s been building with toy bricks ever since. He even took his building bricks to college with him! In chat shows on TV, you can find a set-up called right-side desk arrangement. In such programmes, hosts always place their desk s to the right. Do you know why? That’s because it makes them seem powerful. In western culture, people read them from left to right, and they watch theatre and television that way, too. Their eyes end up on the right side of the screen——where the hosts sits.
You can find other kinds in some interview formats. On the programme The view, for example, the hosts sit around the same table, with the guest at the centre, creating a more peaceful atmosphere. Ye Xiaogang is known as one of the most famous modern Chinese composers.
He learned to play the piano at the age of four. His father was a composer who wrote a lot of music for films. But when his father was sent to a farm to work, Ye was only 11 at that time.
Ye had to work on another farm for a year before entering a factory. He worked in the factory for six years until he was 22.
The workers in the factory were friendly and helped him a lot, but he would not play the piano any more. No matter(不管) how hard he worked on the farm or in the factory, he never left music. He just waited for chances. He dreamed of becoming a pianist.
