Animal Conservation
Many animal and plant species have become extinct and man y more are in great danger. Finding ways to protect the earth' s wildlife and conserve (保
护) the natural world is now more important than ever.
The Dodo
The dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth's creatures. The flightless dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It lived on fruits fallen from the island's trees and lived freely until humans arrived in 1505. The easily controlled bird became a source of food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island b y humans such as pigs, monkeys and rats. The population of dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681.
Rhinos
The rhino horn is a highly prized item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being hunted in its natural habitat. Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most rhinos now live in pro tected nature parks and reserves. Their number has rapidly d ecreased in the last 50 years, and rhinos are still under const ant threat from poachers (偷猎者).
The Giant Panda
The future of the World Wild Fund For Nature's symbol is far f rom certain. Only a few exist in the wild. The Chinese govern ment has set up panda reserves to protect these beautiful ani mals and made the crime of poaching them punishable with 2 0 years in prison. However, the panda's fur is sold at a high pr ice in the black market and poachers are one of the most seri ous threats to the animal's existence.
Tigers
The last 100 years has seen a 95% decrease in the number o f remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, J avan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South Chin a tiger is close to disappearing. Like the rhino horn, tigers' bo nes and organs are sought after (寻

What do you usually do when a flying insect lands on your ar m? Most likely you blow it away. But what if that bug were a la dybug (瓢
虫)? Then chances are you would let it stay. What is it about l adybugs that we like?
Farmers once thought ladybugs were a good luck sign. A lady bug in the field meant that the crops (庄
稼) would be successful and the weather would be good. The farmers may have been exaggerating (夸
大) about what a very small bug can do, but in fact ladybugs d o help out with the crops. They eat harmful insects. Actually, it is not the adult ladybug that eats the other insects. It's the ladybug larvae (幼
虫). Ladybugs lay their eggs on leaves that are covered with a phids or other insects. When the larvae come out of the eggs, they are very hungry and will eat mites, aphids, mealybugs, g reen flies, and other cropdestroyers.
A single ladybug larva can eat over 1,000 aphids in one day. I n the 1800s, ladybugs were brought all the way from Australia to and set free among orange trees that were dying from bei ng eaten by insects. The little red and black “eating machines” completely saved all the trees.
Ladybugs go about their daily business without worrying muc h about anything. Very few birds or insects will eat a ladybug because it gives off something that is dangerous to eat. Ladyb ugs also protect themselves by playing dead. They fall off leav es and remain very still until their enemy goes away.
So next time you see a ladybug, think about what it may be u p to. Maybe it is off to save an orange tree. Maybe its next mo ve will be to fall off a leaf and play dead or stand_up_to a bird about 100 times its size. Maybe it's letting you know that the weather will be good tomorrow. Who knows? Ladybugs are s pecial that way.
5.What do we know about mites and aphids?
A.They do harm to the crops.
B.They eat more than they should.
C.They are food for adult ladybugs.
D.They are the enemy of ladybug larvae.
6.Why were ladybugs brought from Australia to in the 1800
s?
A.To report the weather for farmers.
B.To increase their number.
C.To do research on them.
D.To save orange trees.
7.What does the underlined part “stand up to” in the last par agraph probably mean?
A.Play with. B.Worry about.
C.Get along with. D.Fight back against.
8.What does the author think of the ladybug?
A.It is a cropdestroyer.
B.It is a good luck sign.
C.It is a little flying helper.
D.It is a big eating machine.
