Going to university can cause many unfamiliar feelings. It 's a stressful period. While it offers greater freedom, many find it difficult to let go of family ties and old school friends.
Adding the pressures of academic performance and the loneliness of being in an alien environment, life can bee confusing. For many students, good grades bee the first concern and other ones, like that of mental health, bee less important.
Earlier this year, researchers from the US'Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine released a study earlier showing that between one-fifth and one-quarter of university students within the US suffer from some form of depression. Though a majority of people will feel depressedat some point in their life, this doesn't mean symptoms can be ignored. How can we define “depression”? Although everyone gets sad at times, depression is an illness that is different from just feeling down.
When a “bad day”turns into a “bad week”and goes on into a “bad month”, it 's probably time to get some help. Depressi on can form a cycl—it takes away the en ergy and confidence you need to get out of it, which may severely disturb their normal life. The good news, however, is that depression is treatable and most universities now offer a variety of services to help their students.
There is a lot of professional help available today and a number of medical treatments have been shown to be a highly effective. For less severe cases, often just speaking to a tutor or a friend can make a huge difference. Sometimes all you need is a helping hand and that'swhere friends can be of great help. Many researchers have also shown that gentle exercise, healthy foods and an optimistic outlook can do wonders for your mood. So stay positive and know that you're not alone.
25. Which is not mentioned by the writer in making students feel depressed ?
A. Being far away from home
B. Feeling homesick
C. The pressures from studies
D. Local food
26. Which of the following statements is right according to this passage?
A. Being depressed can be ignored because it is rare in universities.
B. Something has been done to help those suffering from being depressed.
C. Once one feels down in campus, they must seek professional advice.
D. So far, no medicine can be effective in treating depression.
27. Depression is an illness because ____ .
A. it will occur again and again over a certain period of time
B. those suffering from it can not live a normal life
C. it will make one sleepy in class
D. it is hard to recover from it
C
Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason
could be that men 's hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.
The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women' s longevity may be linked tothe fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.
“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by -2205 percent between 18 and 70 years of age, ” said the head of the sDtuadviyd, Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.
“ Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men, ” said G “this is part of the ageing process. ”
What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman' sheart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one' s.
“This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men, Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “Theteam has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart, s”aid Goldspink.
The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles being smaller and weaker as they age.
28. The text mainly talks about ______ .
A. men's heart cells
B. women' s ageing process
C. the gender difference
D. hearts and long life
29. ___________________________________________________ According to the text, the UK scientists have known that _____________________________ .
A. women have more cells than men when they are born
B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat
C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age
D. women never lose their pumping power with age
30. If you want to live longer, you should ______ .
A. enable your heart to beat much faster
B. find out the reason for ageing
C. exercise regularlyto keep your heart healthy
D. prevent your cells from being lost
31. We can know from the passage that ______ .
A. the reason why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart has been found out
B. scientists are on the way to finding out why the male heart loses more of the cells
C. the team has done something to prevent the male from suffering the greater loss

When milk arrived on the doorstep
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn ' t take my eyes off the coin changer (硬币兑换器)fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note-“ Pleaseadd a bottle of buttermil k next delivery -a”nd place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to out house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn ' t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big panies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to pete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊).Every so often my son's friends will ask whatit is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.
32. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer ___ .
A. to show his magical power.
B. to satisfy his curiosity.
C. to pay for the delivery
D. to please his mother.
33. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy's
house?
A. He wanted to have tea there.
B. He was a respectable person.
C. He was fully trusted by the family.
D. He was treated as a family member.
34. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?
A. It has been driven out of the market.
B. Nobody wants to be a milkman now.
C. Its service is getting poor.
D. It is forbidden by law.
35. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?
A. He missed the good old days.
B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.

Every year, it costs British stude nts more and more to atte nd uni versity. 36 So is a university degree really worth it?
In xx, the UK government started to allow universities in England and Wales to charge British students tuition fees. As a result, more than 80% of students in England and Wales now take out a student loan in order to go to university. 37 The average
student in England and Wales now graduates from university with debts of around 12, 000. Stude nts of medici ne, who study for Ion ger, usually have debts of more tha d 20, 000. That is a lot of mon ey. 38 They eve n struggle to pay rent on a house, because they have to start pay ing back the stude nt loa n after graduat ing.
You might think that a British person with a degree will find it easy to get a well-paid job. However, most people in -collaTjtofos ” seem to have a degree these days, so there is a lot of petiti on. 39 Like every one else, graduates usually have to start at the bottom and work their way up. That can be very frustrating for them, since they are often over-qualified for the work they are doing. While at university, they had dreams of getting an exciting, challenging job. Therefore, life after university ends up being quite disappo in ti ng for a lot of graduates.
40 Students have always bee n see n as not hav ing a lot of mon ey, but
“ stu
poverty ” is now considered a real problem in the UK. Most British students expect to get a loan, part-time job or summer job. Worse still, however, an increasing number of stude nts tur n to crime to support themselves.
A. They are graduati ng with larger and larger debts.
B. All these lead to the reevaluation of a university degree.
C. It means graduates cannot afford to buy a house for many years.
D. Sometimes they have to borrow money from relatives and frien ds.
E. If solved improperly, the debts might cause serious social problems.
F. They use the loa n to pay for tuiti on fees, books and liv ing expe nses.
G Also, British panies tend to value work experience over a piece of paper.
