The backpacks were so heavy that we were really tired out when we put them on the ground. Yet our uncle's backpack was half-empty."Why did you give us so many stones?" we asked. "I didn't. You did, "he said, waiting for a while before continuing." Why go to a store? Buy it on the Internet! Need it now? Why wait? Ask to receive it the next day! Each day, more and more people try on-line shopping. In fact, online sales have doubled in the last ten years. But not everyone is excited. Some scientists now say that online shopping is bad for the environment.People are surprised to hear this." They think, I don't need to drive, and the business doesn't need to build a store, so there will be less pollution," says Nuria Prost, an environmental scientist. "But it is not so simple. In fact, online shopping is wasteful. It also adds to air pollution."In truth, the Internet is not always as good a friend to the environment as it seems. For example, most people thought that the Internet would help offices use less paper and other materials. But paper use increased by33percent between 1986 and 1997."Online shopping could have similarly harmful results," says Nevil Cohen, a researcher of environmental science. Part of the problem is what people are buying these days. In the past, people bought things on the Internet that did not require much packing material, such as books and clothing. But now people also shop online for large, heavy pro ducts such as televisions, computers, chairs and tables. These products need to be packed in lots of plastic and paper. This creates a lot of waste.Another problem caused by online shopping is air pollution. When customers buy products and ask to receive them the next day, online businesses often have to send them by air. Airplanes use much more oil than cars and produce more carbon dioxide(二氧化碳). When people buy a lot of different things from different online businesses, this creates even more travel by airplane.Online product returns are also a problem. For example, an online shoe store may allow customers to return shoes for free if they are wrong size. This doubles the packing materials and number of airline trips required to sell one pair of shoes."If people want to protect the environment, they need to think before they shop," says Prost. "People need to ask themselves: Is this exactly what I want? Do I really need it tomorrow, or can I wait?" Online stores can also ask customers to pay money for returns. This may make people shop more carefully." Online shopping is fast and easy, "says Prost," but we can't forget the harmful result it has caused to the environment."(1)The passage begins with several questions to .A. introduce the main topicB. describe online shoppingC. show the writer's opinionD. list advantages of shopping(2)What is the passage mainly about?A. We see it any place we go and, in fact, almost all of us carry some piece of technology with us every time we leave the house. What I always forget, though, is just how useful and powerful technology can be when we want to help others. There is not a single room in my house that does not have some electronic devices (设备)lying around in it. Whenever I am at home, I am almost always using at least one electronic device. If you walked into my living room on any given day, you would find that, first, I have the television on. At the same time, I usually have my laptop resting on my knee, or I will be using my mobile phone. Even when I'm not at home I am always using my phone, and at work or in cafés, I sit down and connect to the local wireless network on my laptop.I must say that I waste a lot of time on the computer and the time I spend on it could be much better spent if I were to take up a little online volunteering. The technology we carry about everywhere can have a great power to do good for the world and to help others and recently I discovered just how much online volunteering there is to do in the world. From using your language skills to do translations, to developing and managing projects and helping with IT work, there is so much that so many people can do to help people in their own countries and across the world. The United Nations, in fact, has a huge page with "Volunteers Recruited" on its website. This work can support the poor and help charities who cannot pay for staff members. My mother was one of those people. My father died when I was one year-old. While I was growing up, we led a very hard life, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Bach night, she seated me on her lap and, spoke the words that would change my life," Kemmons, you are sure to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it."At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said that I would never walk again. Every might my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me whatever those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I walked on my own to school! When the Great Depression broke out, my mother lost her job. Then I left school to support the two of us. At that moment I decided never to be poor again.Over the years, I experienced a lot of business success. But the real turning point happened on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was very angry, that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for an ordinary American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra money for children. Many people did not believe me at that time. Not surprisingly, mom was my strongest supporter. As in any business, I experienced a lot of difficulties. But with my mom's words in my heart, I never doubted I would succeed. Fifteen years later, I had the largest hotel system in the world- Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $I billion a year. You may not have started out life in the best situations. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).Don't argue (争辩) with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can't express yourself well if you are angry. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.Talk about your values. It comes from the Greek words that mean "to write with light". But photography could only give people static pictures. So scientists were trying hard to find ways to make pictures that can move. They made lots of experiments, but failed again and again. It was Eadweard Muybridge who finally succeeded. He was the first photographer to try this successfully. But how did he make it? It was an interesting story.Back in 1872, people didn't know exactly(确切地)whether all four of a horse's hooves (蹄)left the ground at the same time when it was running. A gentleman called Leland Stanford made a bet with his friend about it. Most people believed that a horse always had one hoof on the ground, or it would fall over. But Stanford didn't think so.At that time, it was hard to know who could win the bet, because a horse's legs move so fast that it is impossible to tell just by looking. So they needed a way to record the movement of a running horse. Then Stanford offered $ 25,000 to the famous photographer, Muybridge, to help find the answer. In the beginning, Muybridge failed to get clear images, but he didn't give up. He continued to improve his cameras. In 1878, after many experiments, he managed to get a sequence(连续) of 12 photos. One of them clearly showed that all four of the horse's hooves were off the ground at the same time. And when the photos moved fast, people could see a horse running.Though Edison is usually considered as the person who created the first movie in 1889, it was the work of Eadweard Muybridge and the bet that led to Edison's invention.(1)The underlined word "static" in Paragraph 1 most probably means .A. prettyB. darkC. movingD. still(2)What did Leland Stanford make a bet with his friend about?A. 九年级英语阅读理解习题附答案On November 18th, 1908, three men went up in a balloon. They started early in London. The headman was Auguste Gaudron, and the other two men were Tannar and Maitland. They had a big balloon, and they were ready for a long way.Soon they heard the sea below them. They were carrying the usual rope , and it was hanging down from the basket of the balloon. At the end of the rope they had tied a metal box. This could hold water. Or it could be empty. So they were able to change its weight. They were also carrying some bags of sand. After the sun rose, the balloon went higher. It went up to 3,000 meters, and the air was very cold. The water in the balloon became ice. The men tried to throw out some more sand; but it was hard. They tried to break theicy sand with their knives, but it was not easy. The work was slow and they were still falling; so they had to drop some whole bags of sand. One of them fell on an icy lake below and made a black hole in the ice.At last they pulled the box into the basket. It was still snowing; so they climbed to get away from the snow. They rose to 5,100 meters! Everything became icy. They were so cold that they decided to land. They came down in Poland heavily but safely. He walked up to the teacher and told her, very seriously, that he was new. His name was Christian. He sat down, took a look at me, and then looked away. I didn't think he was very nice and I was sure he wasn't the type I would like to become friends with.During that year, I didn't talk to him much, but he smiled at me when our eyes met, always shyly. He never ate lunch with anybody, and he never talked to anybody but me.But one day I joined those unkind kids who were making fun of him. We made fun of him though I thought it was wrong."Haven't you got any friends?" a kid asked Christian, who had walked past us alone, head down. "No, he hasn't got any friends. He's too stupid and shy," I said. Then Christian looked up at me with the saddest dog eyes I had ever seen. I felt very sorry at that moment. That night, I couldn't sleep because I couldn't get Christian's face out of my mind. In the weeks that followed, he never met my eyes in class and never smiled at me. It was really hard for me to decide to write him a note asking him to forgive (原谅) me. But I thought I should. The next day in class, I wrote him a note telling him how sorry I felt. "I hope we can become friends."We had lunch together that noon and we had the best talk I had ever had. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media sites(社交媒体网站), companies and governments. One set of data can have people's names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need more help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he, she does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong. How can big data be used for good and bad things? It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data. Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses. 九年级英语上册阅读理解10篇【一】Since the start of COVID-19, many people have been stuck(困住的) indoors.Online classes and working from home mean sitting around a lot.We already know that if we don’t move much, we get fatter, we get heart problems and maybe we get diabetes(糖尿病). But new studies have shown that it could be bad for our mind, too.A study of 937 American adults during COVID-19 found that about one-third of them sat around for more than 10 hours per day. It reported that people who sat for too long often showed more symptoms of depression(抑郁的症状).Another study studied children aged 12, 14 and 16. It found that the longer they sat, the higher depression scores they would get by age 18. According to the study, if eighteen-year-old children sat too often, they had depression scores 28 percent higher than those who were more active.Scientists are not sure yet about the connection between too much sitting and depression. But an expert named Mats Hallgren said, “sitting for too long can slow blood flow(流动) in the body including blood flow to the brain. It might also influence the growth of neurons(神经细胞) in the brain. And couch potatoes might do other unhealthy things while sitting on the sofa, such as eating on junk food. All these may lead to depression.”Is there any good news? It’s easy to deal with the problem. Aaron Kandola from University College London, UK, said “all kinds” of movement might help, even light activity.“It is great to exercise and play sports,” said Kandola. “But anything you can do to avoid sitting for too long will help with mood(情绪), stress and thinking clearly.” The key message is just to move more, more often.()1. For younger people, the home quarantine could also be a chance to learn an important life lesson directly: While life can be difficult at times, it can still be enjoyed if you have the right attitude. There are some things you can do to keep a positive attitude. First, stay healthy. Don’t stay up late or sleep too long. And do some exercise every day. Second, make a time plan for study and hobbies, or just some quiet time for yourself. This is because of pigments(色素). And they reflect light and make what the eye sees as colors. So, when we feel excited or angry, our heart can send more blood to the face and the pigments in the skin become red. This is why we have the expression that someone “sees red” when they are angry.Plants also have pigments. Color is important for them to live on. The bright colors of flowers catch the attention of insects. And then they carry their pollen(花粉) from one flower to another. Bees(蜜蜂) can see colors humans cannot, and they follow these to the inside of the flower. Without bees visiting flowers in this way, many plants would die out.Animals also use colors for their own need. They protect themselves with different colors so that they won’t be seen by predators. Take the hare (a type of wild rabbit) for example. It changes colors with seasons for this reason. During summer it is a brown color, and in winter it is white so that it can hide in the snow. However, some animals use colors as a warning to make predators stay away. Bright colors such as yellow and red are often used in this way. Nature, however, is very clever, and predators also use colors to attract(吸引) the animals they feed on.So, we can see that there may be many different reasons and uses for colors in the natural world. Some uses of color in nature remain unknown, but one thing is for sure. Color not only makes our planet beautiful but it is also necessary for our planet to live on.()1. Paragraph 2 mainly tells us that _______ cause(s) human skin to change color.A. healthB. pigmentsC. sunshine()2. It is not only the hometown of Santa Claus, but also rich ground for heavy metal (金属) music. For every 100,000 people, there are 70 metal bands, according to Medium. Every year, thousands of “metalheads” get together at Finland’s many metal festivals, especially during summer. In 2019, Finland held its first Heavy Metal Knitting (编织) Competition. Twelve groups from eight countries took part in it. Many music lovers don’t like heavy metal music because of its rudeness and loudness. But why does this form of music become so popular in Finland?Where you live makes you who you are. The cold and sometimes awful weather make the Finnish people become more and more interested in this heavier form of rock. “When someone is in the cold and dark environment for long periods of time, it is only natural that some form of depression (忧郁) will start to set in,” the website A Metal State Of Mind reported. “How do many Finns deal with this depression, and than metal.”According to Medium, most Finnish people are emotionally restrained (情感克制的). The Finns do not easily express their feelings when they talk. Whatever feelings — soft or hard — they feel, they keep them inside. For them, emotional introversion (内向性) is a form of behavior in Finland.“I feel that the introversion also has to do with the fact that we don’t want to tell personal secrets to others. It has not been socially acceptable to show great feelings, such as anger or sadness.” One has to appear ‘strong’ at all costs, “Ida-Katharina Kiljander, one of the lead singers of a metal band Mournful Lines, told Medium. “It is difficult to discuss our feelings, but still we need a way to deal with these anger or sadness.”()1. There's no exchange of presents among business people, and if one American tries to give another a present, it may look like that he wants to bribe(贿赂) him. Americans have learned that in some other countries people liketo give presents to others, but among ourselves we don't see the need for presents.Even friends may never exchange presents. When I go to foreign countries, I try to bring back little things for close friends, but nobody would feel unhappy if I didn't. I don't often remember a friend's birthday, and few people outside of my family remember mine. If someone gave me presents too often, I'd get unpleasant. But a present from a foreigner-that kind from his or her homeland-won't go wrong, except to government employees(政府职员) who can't be given presents. You usually open a present at once and in front of the person who gives it except Christmas and birthday presents. You should only say, "It's so nice. Thanks…" when you get Christmas or birthday presents. You may want to bring a bottle of wine(葡萄酒) or flowers to a dinner party, but you're never asked to. Nobody will mind if you bring wine, but your friend may not use it that evening. At Christmas we often give presents to our family and sometimes our friends. They prefer to teach themselves because they like to develop their own ways of thinking. They think standard ways of teaching might stop people from being creative and having new ideas.Lesson 2: The answer might not be what you expectFind your answers from facts-not start with an expectation of what you will find. Stephen Jacobsen believed what he was taught: that water on Earth came from icy comets(封星) or planets which hit into Earth. However, by studying a special rock, he discovered that it acted like a sponge(海绵). This suggested that Earth's water might have come from inside, driven to the surface to form the oceans, by geological activity."I had a pretty hard time making others believe it, "he said. "But thinking about the fact that you may be the first person to see something for the first time doesn't happen very often. When it does, it's amazing."Lesson 3: A little luck goes a long wayYears of planning went into a recent achievement in space travel. The European Space Agency's "Philae", a robot landing craft, met up with Comet 67P, which was 480 million kilometres away. The trip from Earth by "Philae" had taken ten years! The scientists had no idea what the surface of the comet would be like. If the landing failed, it would be impossible to get information from the spacecraft. Many deer die of hunger. Others grow up small and unhealthy. In search of food, hungry deer move closer to where humans live. They eat farm crops, vegetables and even trees. Besides, increased numbers of deer near roads can cause traffic accidents.People admire the grace and fast speed of deer. Most people don't want these animals to be hungry and ill. Should people take action to control the growing deer populations?Should People Take Direct Action? Many people think that hunting(打猎) is the best way to control the animal populations. Wildlife managers will see if there's enough food in an area and decide its carrying capacity(容量). Then hunters with licenses are sent to help control the number of deer. Hunting is usually not allowed in cities or suburbs, however. Some people have the idea to catch the deer and move them to other places. But this methodis expensive and requires finding another place that can accept the deer without breaking the balance of ecosystem(生态系统).Scientists are also working to develop chemicals(化学药品) to control the birth rate(率)in deer populations. But this plan works for only one year at a time.Should People Take Indirect Action? Some suggest bringing in natural enemies of deer, such as wolves, lions and bears, to areas with too many deer. But these animals could also hurt dogs, cats, and even humans. Other communities have built tall fences(篱笆) around areas to keep out the deer. However, this is impossible for farmers.▲Some people are against any kind of action. They support leaving the deer alone. Animal populations in an area naturally go up and down over time. Doing nothing means that some deer will die of hunger or illness. But finally, the population will reach a size within the carrying capacity(容量) of the environment. Besides, in decent(像样的)restaurants, you can always ask for a knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough. The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal(正式的)dinner and particularly if the host thinks you're in the country for the first time, he will do his best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes. The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, followed by the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes. Soup will then be served (unless it is a Guangdong-style restaurant), followed by rice, noodles or dumplings. Perhaps one of the things that surprise a Western visitor most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food onto their guests' plates. In formal dinners, there are always "public" chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks. This is a sign of real friendship and politeness. It is always polite to eat the food. If you do not eat it, just leave the food on the plate. People in China tend to over-order food, for they will find it embarrassing(令人尴尬的) if all the food is consumed(吃光). When you have had enough, just say so, or you will always overeat!(1)What's the real difference between Chinese and Western table manners?A. The tools people use to eat.B.
