Introduction:In December 2023, thousands of college students in China took the English proficiency test known as the College English Test Band-4 (CET-4), which is a national examination aimed at assessing students' English skills. The writing section is an important component of this test, requiring students to express their ideas effectively and coherently. This article aims to explore the writing topic provided in the December 2023 CET-4 exam and provide an excellent sample essay.Writing Topic:"Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Learning"Advantages and Disadvantages of Online LearningOnline learning has become increasingly popular in recent years due to technological advancements and the convenience it offers to learners. However, it also presents challenges and drawbacks. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of online learning.Advantages of Online Learning:One of the significant advantages of online learning is flexibility. It allows learners to access educational materials and complete assignments at their own pace and convenience. Students can choose when and where to study, giving them the freedom to balance their studies with work or other responsibilities. Moreover, online learning provides access to a vast range ofresources, including multimedia materials, online textbooks, and discussion forums, which enhance the learning experience.Another advantage of online learning is its cost-effectiveness. Traditional classroom-based education often involves additional costs such as commuting expenses and accommodation fees. Online learning eliminates these costs, making education more accessible to a broader population. Additionally, online courses are typically more affordable than traditional courses, making them an attractive option for students with limited financial resources.Disadvantages of Online Learning:Despite its advantages, online learning also has its drawbacks. One of the main disadvantages is the lack of face-to-face interaction. In traditional classroom settings, students have the opportunity to engage in discussions, ask questions, and receive immediate feedback from instructors. However, online learning primarily relies on asynchronous communication, which may hinder real-time interaction and personal connections.Another disadvantage of online learning is the higher level of self-discipline required. Without the structure and routine provided by face-to-face classes, students may struggle to stay motivated and organized. Online learners need to possess strong time management skills and self-motivation to succeed in their studies. Furthermore, the absence of in-person supervision may make it easier for some students to procrastinate or neglect their coursework. Conclusion:In conclusion, online learning offers various advantages, such as flexibility and cost-effectiveness. However, it also has disadvantages, including reduced face-to-face interaction and the need for self-discipline. To maximize the benefits of online learning, students should develop effective self-management strategies and actively participate in virtual discussions. Institutions should also provide necessary support and resources to ensure a high-quality and engaging online learning experience for their students.Word Count: 476 words。

With just a few clicks, customers can purchase products from all over the world and have them delivered to their doorstep. Some companies have introduced policies to encourage customers to return fewer items, such as offering incentives for reuse or donation.Despite these challenges, the e-commerce industry is not standing still. There are innovative solutions being developed to make the process more sustainable. For example, some companies are experimenting with drone delivery to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

Nowadays, there are more and more [某种现象] in [某种场合]. It is estimated that [相关数据]. Why have there been so many [某种现象]? Maybe the reasons can be listed as follows. The first one is [缘由一]. Besides, [缘由二]. The third one is [缘由三]. To sum up, the main cause of [某种现象] is due to [最主要缘由]. It is high time that something were done upon it. For one thing, [解决方法一]. On the other hand, All these measures will certainly reduce the number of [某种现象].

Nowadays, there are more and more [ghost writers / 枪手] in [China''s examinations / 中国的考场]. It is estimated that [5% examinees are ghost writers / 5%的应试者是枪手]. Why have there been so many [ghost writers / 枪手]? Maybe the reasons can be listed as follows. The first one is [hirers'' ignorance / 雇主无知]. The third one is [hirers'' obtusity / 雇主迟钝]. To sum up, the main cause of [ghost writers / 枪手] is due to [hirers'' low IQ / 雇主智商低]. It is high time that something were done upon it. For one thing, [flagellation / 鞭打]. On the other hand, [decapitation / 斩首]. All these measures will certainly reduce the number of [ghost writers / 枪手]. 2In recent years, credit cards have gained more popularity among college students. With banks more focus on college market, an increasing number of college students have applied for a credit card and begun to consume by it.The following three factors can account for the popularity of credit cards in college. Firstly, a credit card provides overdrawing service, which is a big attraction for those students who have no much money for their domination. Secondly, a credit card can help release financial burdens onthose poor students, and hence reduce the risk of their dropping school for lacking money. Besides, many banks make some preferential policies on credit cards, like sending a gift, lowering year cost. Drawn by these policies, many college students apply for credit cards. 3Psychological Problems among College StudentsThere is no denying the fact that psychological problems arebecoming serious among college students. Reports are often heard thatsome collegians committed suicide or murdered their roommates. Typicalexamples include the case of a Chinese student named Ma Jiajue and thatof a Korean student studying in the U.S.A number of factors may account for these young men and women’stroubles, but the foll owing might the critical ones. First, as youngadults, most of them are at the stage of personality formation and arequite sensitive to their surroundings. Secondly, they are at a criticalpoint of personal development and are facing pressure from variousaspects: love, academy, jobseeking and so on. To make things worse, most of them are living off home and without their parents care andsupervision. In view of the seriousness of the problem, effective measures mustbe taken before things get worse. First, it is essential that thechannel of communication be kept open among students, between studentsand their superintendents as well as between students and theirparents. Besides, psychological counseling should be enhanced andrendered to problem students in time. Only with these measures takencan we expect sound growth of college students. Starting Career in a Big City or Small TownWant to be a small fish in a big pond or the other way round? Every graduate faces this question when he starts his career. Some prefer to stay in the big cities after graduation. To them, big cities mean more experiences, more opportunities to see the big world and more space for career development. At the same time, higher salary is another temptation. But some other graduates want to start in small towns. Even though there may not be many big companies, they can have a quieter and less competitive life. Another reason is they can be a big fish in a small pond. They can easily get the management’s attention and may win promotion earlier. As far as I am concerned, I prefer to start in a big city like Shanghai. 全国大学英语CET四级考试自测试卷及答案指导一、写作(15分)CET-4 Writing SectionDirections: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic given below. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.Topic:In recent years, there has been a growing trend of young people choosing to live a minimalist lifestyle. What is your opinion on this trend? Write an essay entitled “The Charm and Challenge of Minimalist Living” to discuss the reasons behind this trend and its impact on individuals and society. You can cite examples to support your point of view.Sample EssayThe Charm and Challenge of Minimalist LivingIn the fast-paced modern world, the concept of minimalist living has become increasingly popular among young adults, as they seek a simpler, more meaningful way of life. The essence of minimalism lies in owning fewer possessions, which allows for greater focus on personal growth and experiences rather than material goods. This shift towards simplicity not only brings about a sense of freedom from the burden of excess but also encourages a more environmentally friendlylifestyle. On an individual level, adopting a minimalist approach can lead to reduced stress and increased happiness. By decluttering their physical space, people often find that their mental space becomes clearer as well, enabling them to concentrate on what truly matters—such as relationships, health, andself-development. Furthermore, with less time and energy spent on managing and maintaining belongings, one can dedicate more resources to pursuing passions and interests, leading to a more fulfilling existence. From a societal perspective, the minimalist movement contributes positively by promoting sustainable consumption patterns. As more individuals choose to buy less and opt for quality over quantity, the overall demand for products decreases, potentially reducing waste and conserving natural resources. Moreover, it fosters a culture that values experiences and connections, moving away from the consumerist mindset that often defines success through accumulation of wealth and possessions. However, embracing minimalism does come with its challenges. It requires a significant change in mindset and habits, which can be difficult for some. Additionally, in societies where social status is frequently associated with visible signs of wealth, minimalists might face judgment or misunderstanding. Despite these obstacles, the benefits of a minimalist lifestyle, including enhanced well-being and a lighter ecological footprint, make it a compelling choice for many.In conclusion, while the path to minimalist living may present certain hurdles, the potential rewards for both individuals and the wider community are profound. By simplifying our lives, we not only enrich our own experiences but also contribute to a more sustainable and harmonious world.Analysis•Introduction: The opening paragraph introduces the concept of minimalist living, setting the stage for the discussion.•Body Paragraphs:•Individual Impact: Explains how minimalism can reduce stress, increase happiness, and allow for more focus on personal development.•Societal Impact: Discusses the positive effects on the environment and the promotion of a value system based on experiences and connections rather than material possessions.•Challenges: Acknowledges the difficulties in adopting a minimalist lifestyle, such as changing established mindsets and facing societal pressures.•Conclusion: Summarizes the key points and reiterates the overall positive impact of minimalist living, emphasizing the dual benefits for personal well-being and environmental sustainability. This sample essay demonstrates a clear structure, logical argumentation, and the use of specific examples to support the main ideas, all of which are essential components of a strong CET-4 writing piece. News Item 1:A new study suggests that eating a high-protein diet can help people maintain muscle mass as they age. Comparing with the car, the bicycle is cheaper and it is easier in using than the car, but its speed is lower than that of the car.
The bicycle will be remained for a long time in China but in the end it will be disappeared with the improval of people's living level.
Compared with cars, bicycles are superior in many ways. First, they are cheap, convenient and easy to ride. Second, riding bicycle is good for health. Third, they bring no noise nor air pollution. Though cars are faster and more comfortable, they are too expensive. They consume plenty of oil and they pollute the air. Sometimes, it is difficult for a driver to park his car. Moreover they often cause traffic jams and accidents.
• Score:8
Bicycle is an important means of transport in China. The important reason of it is the economy of Chinese. The use of bicycle in China is widely because people in China have not high wage. They can only afford a bicycle, and they have no money to buy a car which is too expensive. So Chinese usually buy a bicycle, and use it to go to work, or go to travel and so on. The other reason is the large population of China. All these made the bicycle become the important means of transport.

It’s below the heading with space of one ortwo lines, but begins at the left margin (信纸左边顶格).Better add titles (尊称) before the receiver’s name.E.g.Mr. Sam AdamsEwart Leather ProductImport & Export Corporation36 Main StreetToronko, CaliforniaU.S.A.

XXXc. To Whom It May Concern(2)不正式的称呼收信人是朋友或者熟人Dear +given name3、正文(body)根据文章内容的要求来进行细分。

Equivalent to “敬上” , “谨启” in Chinese. Two or three linesbelow the body of the letter. The beginning letter of the firstword should be capitalized Followedby a comma.Right under the complementary close. Shows the authenticity(真实性) of the letter and the respect of the writer. If there is aprinted name, add another handwritten signature above theprinted one.●当自己的正常生活收到骚扰,自己的利益收到侵害或当社会规范有失社会规范时,用来表达不满情绪和提出批评的信件,所有的投诉信都有一个共同的特点,最终要收信人解决问题,所以需要提出解决方案。
