(2019·苏锡常镇调研)Sorry seems to be the hardest word. So sang Elton John on one of his biggest 1970s hits — but not every public figure seems to find it so tough to let out that powerful five-letter word.
In recent months varieties of public figures, from politicians, to Hollywood actors and You Tube stars have all publicly expressed regrets.
But with floods of regrets on the airwaves, just how can we tell a forced apology from a heartfelt expression?
In its purest form, saying sorry should be an “act of regrets, a realization that something you have said or done has hurt someone and you want to repair it”,says psychologist Geraldine Joaquim.
Made early, a sincere apology can be huge ly beneficial and can “relieve the tension and takes the wind out of an accuser's sails”,she says.
A need to say sorry can arise in someone's public life and equally at home with their family and friends but, whatever the environment, how well it is received depends on how personalized it feels.
From businesses, governments and organizations, a scripted response will fail to resonate (引起共鸣) as it will not convey empathy (同理心) and sympathy.
Whether online or in person, the timing and choice of language in an apology are decisive factors.
“It is important to show that you understand and sympathize,” says Martin Stone, of
PR agency Tank, “It is vital that any business or individual making an apology understands the focus — is it sorry for the way it's acted or is it sorry that the complainant feels the way they do?”
Performed apologies always have a sense of being “acted out”,and are often accompanied by too many theatrical gestures. If sincere, the person making the apology will be looking for listening clues to see if they are being understood, such as eye contact and facial expressions. They will provide “humbling (谦卑的) signals”,such as a lowered head, to indicate regrets.
It is also important to avoid irresponsible statements or promises that can't be kept. “Don't say that you'll ensure that this will not happen again if you're not confident it won't. It could come back to bite you,” Stone explains.
Equally, the use of “but” can hugely change the tone of an apology.
As Stone points out, “I'm sorry but ... It sounds like you are making excuses and aren't actually taking any form of responsibility. It may be three letters but it can instantly make an apology seem hollow.”

(2019·南京三模)Humanity has begun wrestling with the dangers of global threats such as climate change. But few authorities are planning for catastrophic solar storms —huge eruptions of mass and energy from the sun that destroy the Earth's magnetic field. In a recent paper, two Harvard University scientists estimate the potential economic damage from such an event will increase in the future and could equal the current US GDP — about $20 trillion — 150 years from now.
This kind of storm has happened before. The so-called Carrington Event of 1859, the most intense magnetic storm ever recorded on the Earth, caused auroras (极光) in the atmosphere and even delivered electric shocks to telegraph operators. But a Carrington-scale storm today would cause far more harm because society now depends so heavily on electrical power grids, communications satellites and GPS.
In an effort to quantify that threat, astrophysicists Abraham Loeb and Manasvi Lingam of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics developed a mathematical model that
assumes society's vulnerability (脆弱性) to solar storms will grow with technological advances. Under this model, during the next 50 years the potential for economic damage will depend primarily on the rising odds of a strong solar storm over time. Beyond 50 years our vulnerability will increase dramatically with technological progress until the latter levels off.
Some scientists question the model's predictions.“Estimating the economic impact is challenging now, let alone in over a century,” says Edward Oughton, a research associate at the University of Cambridge's Center for Risk Studies. Y et he warns that uncertainty should not stop us from practical preparations, such as making power grids stronger and improving early-warning systems.
Loeb and Lingam think up a much wilder strategy: a $100-billion magnetic deflector shield (导流板), positioned between the Earth and the Sun. This idea seems “pretty preposterous”,however, given that solar particles arrive at the Earth from all directions, says Daniel Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder.
A better understanding of “space weather” — the changing conditions in the Earth's outer space environment, including solar radiation and particles — could help find the best strategies for confronting a dangerous solar storm, says Stacey Worman, a senior analyst at consulting firm Abt Associates. “This is a challenging but important question,” Worman says, “that we need more eyes on.”

(2019·盐城模拟)People from all over the world visit Disneyland to have fun, not to get sick. But last week, an outbreak of measles (麻疹) spread from the Southern California theme park. As of Monday, January 19, at least 52 people have got the easily spread illness.
The majority of the reported cases of measles are from people who visited the park before. According to the California Department of Public Health, these people were exposed to the illness at Disneyland from December 17—20.
Officials believe the cause is likely someone who caught measles abroad and visited Disneyland, but this has yet to be proved. However, in 2014, California had its highest measles infection rate in nearly twenty years. There were 66 cases of measles reported in the state — 23 of them in Orange County, where Disneyland is located.
Measles spreads very easily. It can be caught from coughing and sneezing. Crowded areas like theme parks are especially suitable for its spread.
The illness starts with a fever and develops into symptoms including a cough, runny nose, red eyes and so on. About three out of ten people infected with measles will develop another health problem, including an ear infection or pneumonia (肺炎).

In July, more than 15,000 security experts, hackers, hobbyists, and researchers met in Las Vegas for Black Hat USA 2017 at Mandalay Bay. This was the 20th year that the security conference was held, and both black and white hat hackers joined together to discuss security.
For two decades, Black Hat has gained a reputation for demonstrations of some of the most cutting-edge research into information security as well as its development and industry trends. The event has also had its share of controversy —sometimes even causing last-minute cancelations (中止).
Launched in 1997 as a single conference in Las Vegas, Black Hat has gone international with annual events in the U.S. , Europe and Asia. Black Hat USA 2017 was almost a full week of everything having to do with IT security. There were hands-on training sessions, a full business hall where sellers gathered with products, and of course, parties. I felt very content for the products I had bought would really help me a great deal from then on.
This is a conference that attracted some of the brightest people in the world of security, and has a reputation for bringing together all types of professionals and amateurs interested in hacking, security, or the latest encryption. What's interesting about Black Hat USA 2017 is that there is something for everyone. From hackers trying to hack other hackers' database to hackers remaining “off the grid” (不入网), you never know what you might find. In fact, most people who attended this conference decided to stay away from electronic communication all together. Those experienced attendees left their devices in airplane mode,
turned off Wi-Fi, and always used two-factor authentication (二元认证) for critical accounts during the conference.
It's important to note that many companies have employees that simply don't comply (服从) with security policies. In addition, these policies aren't governed enough, and it is costing millions. In her presentation “Governance, Compliance and Security: Three Keys to Protecting Your Bu siness”,the speaker from HP —Sr. Security Advisor, Dr. Kimberlee Brannock, has used her extensive education and experience in compliance and governance to shape HP's security standards and shared why it's not always enough to secure business networks and why governance and compliance really matter. With 25 billion connecting devices by 2020, maintaining proper networks and data security compliance is an important concern for any business, as non-compliance costs businesses an average of $9.5 million every year through fines, lost business and lawsuits.
Another very popular briefing at Black Hat USA 2017 was “Staying One Step Ahead of Evolving Threats” demonstrating on average, an organization has more than 600 security alerts each week.
Most put in thousands of hours and dollars for that matter, on securing servers, laptops, and data centers, but many companies are ignoring other areas of security vulnerabilities. One of the best things about this briefing was that the leader, Michael Howard from HP, Chief Security Advisor, is responsible for evolving the strategy for security solutions and services in Managed Services. He gave a lot of information on printer security, used a great number of real-world negative examples related to printer security in many companies and shared how he used a proven framework to secure the print infrastructure.
Overall, Black Hat USA 2017 was an eye-opening experience, and with the world of network security changing all the time, all in attendance surely learned something new. I came across a large number of very cool characters, partied hard, drank too much, and ate too much. However, after my attendance, I'm considering moving off the grid to a cave in the Outback of Australia to keep my data secure.
