Timothy Addo was twelve meters above the ground, and scared. They got there just in time. Timothy lost his hold and dropped. His feet hit Mr. Nevarez and pushed him over onto the sidewalk. But their father and the man he had just saved were safe. They were lucky because in some systems, the trains ride closer to the mil bed.
Wesley Autrey received the city’s highest honor, the Bronze Medallion. Businessman Donald Tromp presented Mister Autrey with ten thousand dollars. And there have been other rewards and
honors. But Wesley Autrey says he is not a hero. He said, “What I did is something that any and every New Yorker should do.”

Mother’s Day is a time of remembrance and celebration for Mom.
The earliest celebrations of Mother’s Day can date back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the God. During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called “Mothering Sunday” on the 4th Sunday of Lent to honor the mothers of England. During this time many of the England’s poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A mothering cake was often brought along.
As Christianity (基督教) spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the “Mother Church” -- the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival mixed with the Mothering Sunday celebration. People began honoring their mothers as well as the church.
In the United States Mother’s Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace; In 1907 Ann Jarvis, from’Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia to accept her request for celebrating Mother’s Day on the second anniversary of her mother’s death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother’s Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in order to establish a national Mother’s Day. In 1911 Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day
as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year, some countries also celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.

Even with great successes, the United States still has one of the worst fire death rates in the world. Safety experts say the problem is not money or technology, but because the government will not take fires seriously enough.
American fire departments are some of the world’s fastest and best-equipped. They have to be. The United States has twice Japan’s population, and 40 times as many fires. It spends far less on preventing fires than on fighting them. And American fire-safety lessons are aimed almost entirely at children, who die in large numbers in fires but who, against popular beliefs, start very few of them. Just 9 percent of all fire deaths are caused by children playing with matches.
Experts say the error is an opinion that fires are not really anyone’s fault. That is not so in other countries, where both public education and the law treat fires as either a personal failing or a crime. Japan has many wood houses; of the 48 fires in world history that burned more than 10,000 buildings, Japan has had 27. Punishment for causing a big fire can be as severe as life imprisonment.
In the United States, most education dollars are spent in elementary schools. But, the lessons are aimed at too limited a number of people. But in some ways, the United States has made some progress. Fires no longer destroy 18.000 buildings as they did in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, or kill half a town of 2,400 people, as they did the same night in Peshtigo, Wisconsin. Other than the Beverly Hill Supper Club fire in Kentucky in 1977, it has been four decades since more than 100 Americans died in a fire.
The United States continues to depend more on technology than laws or social pressure. There are smoke detectors in 85 percent of all homes. Some local building laws now require home sprinklers (喷水装置) . New heaters and irons shut themselves off if they are tipped.
64. Many people die in fires in The United States because _____________.
A. the government takes no interest in taking new technology
B. the government don’t pay great attention to preventing fires
C. the population there is twice as large as that in Japan
D. they do not spend enough money on fire equipment

66. The underlined sentence in the passage means ____________.
A. no great fire in America in recent 40 years has led to high death rate
B. several great fires in America in recent 40 years have led to high death rate
C. only one great fire in America in recent 40 years has led to high death rate
D. the fire in Kentucky in 1977 made only a few people killed
67. The following statements are true EXCEPT that ___________.
A. America has one of the world’s fastest and best-equipped fire departments
B. it’s children who cause most of the fire accidents in the United States

Nuclear power’s danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be described in one word: radiation (辐射) .
Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected (探测) by human senses. It can’t be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is harmful for human beings and other living things. At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being by killing masses of cells in important organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe.
If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed completely. Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in an unusual way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years. This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without being known by the person at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated (放射治疗) and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or easy to get serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.
Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.
72. According to tile passage, the danger of nuclear power lies in __________.
A. nuclear mystery
B. radiation detection
C. radiation level
D. nuclear radiation
73. Radiation can lead to serious results even at the lowest level because ___________.
A. it attacks and kills few cells
B. it damages few good cells
C. the damaged cells can repair themselves
D. the damaged cells can reproduce themselves
74. Radiation can hurt us in the way that it can __________
A. kill large numbers of ceils in main organs so as to cause death immediately
B. damage cells which may grow into cancer years later
C. affect the healthy growth of our younger generation
D. lead m all of the above remits
75. Which of the following can be best inferred from the passage?
A. The importance of protection from radiation cannot be overemphasized.
B. The mystery about radiation remains unsolved.
C. Cancer is mainly caused by nuclear radiation.
D. Radiation can hurt those who do not know about its danger.

In Britain all children have to go to school between the ages of 5 and 16. In the US children must go to school from the age of 6 to between the ages of 14 and 16, depending on the state they live in.
In England and Wales, the subjects that children should study and the levels of achievement they should reach are required by the National Curriculum (课程). But it does not apply in Scotland, where each school decides what subjects it will teach. In the US the subjects taught are decided by national and local governments. British schools usually have prayers and religious instruction, but American schools are not allowed to include prayers or to teach particular religious beliefs.
At 16 students in England and Wales take GCSE examinations. These examinations are taken by students of all levels of ability in all subjects and may involve a final examination, an assessment, or both of these things. At 18 some students take A-level examinations, usually in not more than 3 subjects. It is necessary to have A-levels in order to go to a university. In Scotland students take the SCE examinations. A year later, they can take examinations called HIGHS, and then they can either go straight to a university or spend another year at school and take the Certificate (证书) of Sixth Year Studies. In Scotland the university system is different from that in England and Wales. Courses usually last four years rather than three and students study a larger number of subjects as part of their degree. In the US school examinations are not as important as they are in Britain. Students in High Schools do have exams at the end of their last two yearn, but these final exams are considered along with the work that the students have done during the school years.

Recently, people in our city had a discussion about whether it is right W keep a pet dog.
Some people think dogs are our loyal friends. For one thing, dogs can keep company with people. For another, they can help people; for example, they can guide the way for the blind. However, some other people disagree. They think dog waste can pollute the environment and some dogs may bite people and cause diseases, which is dangerous to us.
In my opinion, people have the right to keep their pet dogs. But at the same time, the dog owners should make sure their pets won’t cause trouble to others.

W: Excuse me, Sir. Would you please tell me how I can get to the North Hospital?
M: North Hospital? You can go there by bus.
W: Which bus, please?
M: Bus No. 101 will take you there.
W: How far is the hospital from here?
M: It’s about three quarters of an hour.
W: Oh, it’s a long drive. Well, could you tell me where I can take the bus?
M: You can take the bus from Park Street.
W: Where is the Park Street?
M: Go down this street, turn fight at the second corner, go through two blocks, then you will see the Park Street
in front of you...
W: Oh, no! You know, my son is iii and it seems very serious.
M: In that case, you can take a taxi over there. It will take you about twenty minutes.
