For years and years people have been saying that the railways are dead. “ We can do without railways.” People say…as if motorcars and planes have made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, and that they’re dying .But this is far from the truth: in these days of expensive oil, the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they are cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What is more, it takes you from the heart of a city into the heart of another. It doesn’t leave you up as a plane does, miles and miles from the city center. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does, in endless traffic jams, and a single train carry goods which a plane or a motorcar could never do.
Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning, for we have
just entered the age of super-fast trains, trains traveling at 150 miles an hour and more. Soon we will be wondering why we spent so much on motorcars we can’t use because we have not enough money to buy the oil and planes we can’t fly for the same reason..

43.The writer thinks that the railways, far from being dead, are very much alive because .
A.we can have a smooth and untroubled journey
B.we’ll not have enough money to fly in planes
C.we can now travel in super-fast train
D.all of the above
44.The best title for this passage may be””
A.Not the End but the Beginning
B.Which is the Best: Train, Motorcar or Plane
C.Trains are More Competitive than Motorcars or Planes
D.Oh, Super-fast Trains

Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on to the stage is “Don’t!” But it is useless苑to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slight. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and gift are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, publicity, taking care of the costumes, and even acting very small parts. It is very hard work indeed: the hours are long and the salary is tiny.
Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car, so he stopped and got out to speak to the girl. He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking .Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to make Connie believe that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actor of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!
45.From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession .
A.too many are after B.too difficult for young people
C.for ambitious people only D.for young people only
46.For someone who feels he must act, the author thinks it is very possible that .
A.he will become a film producer very soon
B.he will surely become a stage manager
C.he will be surely as well paid as any famous actor or actress
D.he will end up without any success
47.A few weeks after the test, Connie Pratt found herself .
A.the most famous actress of the world
B.playing the leading female part in a film
C.as famous as the greatest actor of the world
D.no less famous than the leading actor of the day
48.The concluding sentence” chances like this happen once in a blue moon” means .
A.this is something that happens once in a while B.this is a highly profitable chance C.this is something highly possible D.this is a very rare happening

Beldon and Canfield are two seashore towns, not far apart. Both towns have many hotels, and in summer the hotels are full of holiday-makers and other tourists.
Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day this news appeared on Page Two of the town’s newspaper. The Beldon Post.
FIRE AT SEABREEZE
Late last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette started the fire. We say again to all our visitors,” Please don’t smoke cigarettes in bed.” This was Beldon’s first hotel fire for
five years.
The canfield times gave the news in these words on Page One:
ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CATCHES FIRE
Last night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, bedclothes and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said,” An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I turned the bedside light on, I heard a funny noise from the lamp .” We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield.

People can be addicted to different things—e.g. alcohol, drug, certain foods, or even television. People who have such an addiction are compulsive(强迫的): they have a very powerful psychological need that they feel they must satisfy. According to psychologists, many people are compulsive spenders. They feel that they must spend money. This compulsion, like most others, is impossible to explain reasonably. For compulsive spenders who buy on credit, charge accounts are even more exciting than money. In other words, compulsive spenders苑feel that with credit, they can do anything. Their pleasure in spending large amounts is actually greater than the pleasure that they get from the things they buy.
There is even a special psychology of bargain hunting. To save money, of course, most people look for sales, low prices, and discounts. Compulsive bargain hunters, however, often buy things that they don’t need just because they are cheap. They want to believe that they are helping their budgets(预算), but they are really playing an exciting game. When they can buy something
for less than other people, they feel that they are winning. Most people, experts claim, have two reasons for their behavior: a good reason for the things that they do and the real reason.
It is not only scientists, of course, who understand the psychology of spending habits, but also business people. Stores, companies, and advertisers use psychology to increase business. They consider people’s needs for love, power, or influence, their basic values, their beliefs and opinions, and so on in their advertising and sales methods.
Psychologists often use a method called “behav ior therapy(疗法)” to help individuals solve their personality problems. In the same way, they can help people who feel that they have problems with money.
53.According to the psychologists, a compulsive spender is one who spends large amounts of money .
A.and takes great pleasure from what he or she buys
B.in order to satisfy his or her basic needs in life
C.just to meet his or her strong psychological need
D.and feels he or she is cheated

D.Compulsive bargain hunters do not have problems with money.
55.What is the text mainly about?
A.The psychology of money-spending habits.
B.The habits of compulsive spenders.
C.A special psychology of bargain hunting.
D.The use of the psychology of spending habits in business.
56.From the text we may safely conclude that compulsive spenders or compulsive bargain hunters .
A.are really unreasonable B. need special treatment
C.are really beyond drugs D.can never get any help to solve their problems with money

A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics, and wars. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions, and psychology. In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors—or of people very different from our own—can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding than what can be found in most history books.
In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented: that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Franciso Goya was perhaps the first truly political artist. In his well-known painting The Truth of May 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its misuse of power over people . Over a hundred years later, symbolic images were used in Pablo Picasso’s Guernica to express the horror of war. Meanwhile, on another continent, the powerful paintings of Diego Rivera, Jose Clements Orozco, and David
Alfaro Siqueiros---as well as the works of Alfredo Ramos Martinez---depicted these Mexican artists’ deep anger and sadness about social problems.
In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. Four hundreds of years in Europe, religious art was almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that depicted people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t read, they could still understand biblical stories in the pictures on church walls. By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was ( and still is) its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic (教的)belief that statues are unholy.
57.Which of the following sentences is WRONG according to the passage?
A.Art can provide information about the everyday activities of ancient people.
B.Art history concentrates on religious beliefs, emotions and psychology only.
C.Information and facts about politics are given objectively in history.
D.Franciso Goya was perhaps the first truly political artist.
58.Art is subjective because .
A.personal and emotional opinions are expressed through it
B. it can help us understand history books better.
C.it will make the viewers angry and sad about history.
D.opinions about facts are not expressed
59.The passage is mainly discussing .
A.the difference between general history and art history
B.the development of art history
C.what we can learn from art
D.the influence of artists on art history
60.It may be concluded from this passage that .
A.Islamic artists focus on creating architectural decorations with pictures of flowers or geometric(几何)forms
B.history teachers are more objective than artists
C.it is more difficult to study art history than general history
D.people and stories from the Bible were painted on churches and other buildings in order to popularize the Bible

书面表达:
Do you understand this cartoon? Let me tell you. One day, the son wanted to help a little girl stand up when she fell over, but his mother stopped him and said, “Don’t do that, otherwise others will think it was you who knocked her down.” A few days later, the mother was shocked at seeing her son just let the fallen oil bottle lie. She asked him why he didn’t put it in place, but the boy talked back, “If I had straightened the bottle up, you would have thought that I did it.”
I disagree with what the mother did in the story. I think parents should set a good example to their children. They should not only care for their children’s health, but their minds. They should let their children know it’s a pleasure to help others who are in trouble. We live in the s ociety which is a big family for all of us. Everyone should do something good to build up our society, right?。
