Book 3 module 1
Located in the city of Paris, the Eiffel Tower is known as the landmark of France. It is also the symbol of Europe architecture.
In the late 19th century, an agreement was reached in Paris to build an architecture to represent France, which is one of the birthplace of European ancient civilization. The French government signed a document to build such an architecture.
Ever since the announcement was made, architects across the country showed great interest and took part in it. They came up with various plans in terms of the government’s requirement.
The designing plans were exhibited in a gallery situated in the center of the Paris. Millions of people came to see them. Finally, Eiffel’s plan was chosen by the parliament because of its unique artistic feature.
The project was so wonderful that it became a continental event. On the day of its opening, celebrations were held in different regions in Europe.
Today, the Eiffel Tower attract millions of visitors from all over the world every year. On the one hand, it helps develop the economy of Paris. On the other hand, it makes Paris more famous in the world.
Today, one of the problems that are troubling the world is the big gap between developing countries and developed countries.
In many developing countries, hunger and poverty can be seen everywhere. In some countries, the basic human rights cannot be guaranteed.People get such a low income that they can hardly support themselves, to say nothing of entertainment activities. They are living at the bottom of society and making efforts to survive. They don’t have money to educate their children.
Public transport isn’t well developed in these countries and there are few freeways.
What’s more unfortunate is that some households even become homeless, who need help from charities.
Of course, most of the problems in the developing countries are connected with economic development. However, the industrial and tourism development bring about serious environmental problems at the same time. And the polluted air and water do damage to people’s health.
Much remains to be done to solve all these problems. It’s a smart choice for developed countries to help developing countries. And only by working hard together can we reach the goal of common prosperity and building a world of peace, happiness and harmony.
There are various kinds of natural disasters all over the world, such as floods, hurricanes, lightning, thunderstorm, tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes and so on. They all demonstrate the violence of nature for us.
Once any of these natural disasters takes place, it does great damage to us human beings. It is said that 30000 natural disasters take place every year in the world on average.
Have you ever experienced a natural disaster?
When a hurricane comes, roofs of houses may be picked up and great waves appear on the sea.
When a tornado strikes an area, everything may be ruined completely.
When a volcano erupts, lava will cover the land and many things will catch fire, which is hard to be put out.
A large earthquake is even more terrifying. When it occurs, all the buildings may end up turning into ruins. We can do nothing but watch the ruins sadly.
Fortunately, many countries have taken active measures and made worldwide efforts to deal with the natural disasters. Hopefully, there will be possibility that we human beings will get natural disasters under control.
Nowadays, the problem of pollution is becoming more and more serious and our environment is becoming worse and worse.
With people’s cutting down trees, desertification has been threatening us, and sandstorm is becoming more frequent these years, especially in inland China. It’s absolutely frightening and scary when you are caught in a sandstorm. The air is filled with sandstorm and you can hardly see anything else. You have to wear a mask to protect you from the storm.
We have to admit that in the process of developing economy we have been polluting the environment. The factories discharge chemicals into the rivers and give out waste gases, like carbon dioxide, into the air. When people take in the harmful gas, they will fall ill. Of course, the factories also produce much garbage. All these have a bad effect on the environment and the city is polluted one after another.
It’s true that most of us are concerned about the environmental protection. But it’s no use complaining about the present urgent situation. We must take actions.
In a nutshell, it’s every citizen’s duty to fight against pollution and protect the environment. Only by working hard together can we win this campaign.
As is known to all, China is a country with an ancient civilization. It has produced numerous great people like philosophers, thinkers as well as inventors in its history.
The inventors invented useful things for people, while those philosophers and thinkers educated people in mind. With their philosophy and thoughts, they tell people about what to believe and how to live. They usually advocated(提倡) principles with good morals(寓意,行为准则), such as justice, honesty, love and kindness. They also stressed the importance of freedom, peace and order. When one country was at war with another, they would try to stop the war.
It’s true that philosophy exerts an imperceptible influence on people’s thinking. With their ideas and teachings, they brought up one generation after another. All of them became interested in their country’s future. Some even a cted as advisers of a country. Although some of them were in high positions and others were in terrible conditions, they were all influential to common people and our society’s development.
In conclusion, all of them made great contributions to China and we are proud of them! We should learn from them and work together to make Chian stronger.
Many irrigation works and water conservancy(水利) projects have been set up in recent years. Most of them are for civil use.
Dams are usually built to stop the water from flowing, especially to make a reservoir to produce electricity. Hydro-electric plants are built to generate hydro-electric power. What people are doing is trying to harness natural power to produce energy for people.
In fact, there were many famous irrigation works and water conservancy projects in ancient Chinese history. The construction of them can date from the Qin Dynasty.
Dujiangyan Irrigation Project by Li Bing was probably the earliest irrigation works in China. At the very beginning, many people thought it ridiculous to build such a project. Because they thought Lo Bing’s idea didn’t make sense and the project would cost enormous time and money. But nothing could hold back Li Bing’s determination, and he finally made his dream come true. The project turned out to be a great success, which brought an end to drought and flood in the area. Later, many poems were written to sing and praise Li Bing and his works.
Other famous irrigation works were Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal built in the Sui Dynasty, which is the longest canal in the world, and Three Gorges Project finished in 2009, which is the largest irrigation works in the world.
Now the Chinese government has also taken measures to protect ancient structures, relics and historical sites.。
