第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Some colors people see late at night could cause signs of clinical(临床的)depression(沮丧). That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals(个人) who live or work in low levels of light overnight(整夜) can develop clinical depression. Doctors use the word “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide.
In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠)to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night.
The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light.
After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.
Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep uneasiness(不安) at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim(微弱)red light, they did not.”
Randy Nelson notes that photosensitive(感光)cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep-wake cycle.
He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and
white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.
1、Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because __________.
A.they are similar to humans in dealing with colors
B.they are easy to observe and study
C.they are sensitive to colors like human beings
D.they are active at night and sleep during the day
2、What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed?
A.They drink less sugary water.
B.They don’t sleep well.
C.Their eyesight becomes worse.
D.Their energy level becomes low.
3、__________ tends to cause hamsters to be depressed.
A.Dim light B.Red light
C.Blue light D.Darkness
4、What can help people who work late at night to avoid being depressed?
A.Not being exposed to dim red light when using computers.
B.Equipping their computer screens to put it more in the reddish light.
C.Living or working in low levels of light overnight.
D.Going to see doctors of clinical depression regularly for help.
22.(8分)The earlier Thanksgiving in Canada was to celebrate the earlier start of winter in the North, ending the harvest season earlier. Thanksgiving in Canada did not have a fixed date until the late 19th century. Many of the individual Canadian provinces had declared their own days of Thanksgiving. The first official Canadian Thanksgiving occurred on April 15, 1872, when the nation was celebrating the Prince of Wales’ recovery from a serious illness. By the end of the 19th century, Thanksgiving Day was normally celebrated on November 6. However, when World WarⅠended, the Armistice Day holiday was usually held during the same week. To prevent the two holidays from conflicting with each other, in 1957 the Canadian Parliament declared Thanksgiving to be observed on its present date on the second Monday of October.
Much as in Canada, Thanksgiving in the United States was observed on various dates throughout history. From the time of the Founding Fathers until the time of
Lincoln, the date Thanksgiving was observed varied from state to state. The final Thursday in November had become the date of custom in most states by the beginning of the 19th century. Modern Thanksgiving was first officially called for in all states in 1863 by Abraham Lincoln. Influenced by Sarah Josepha Hale, who wrote letters to politicians for around 40 years trying to make it an official holiday, Lincoln declared the date to be the final Thursday in November in an attempt to raise a sense of American unity between the Northern and Southern states. However, a nationwide official Thanksgiving date was not realized until the 1870s. On December 26, 1941, President Franklin D.Rosevelt changed the national Thanksgiving Day from the last Thursday in November to the fourth Thursday.
1、What do Canada and the USA have in common about Thanksgiving?
A.They both have fixed dates of Thanksgiving in history
B.They both celebrate their Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. C.They both celebrated their first official Thanksgiving in the 1870s.
D.They both observed thanksgiving to raise a sense of unity of their countries.
2、Who made American Thanksgiving Day celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November officially?
A.Abraham Lincoln. B.Sarah Josepha Hale.
C.Franklin D.Roosevelt.
3、What is the passage mainly about?
A.The history of the dates Thanksgiving in Canada and America.
B.The first official Thanksgiving in Canada and America.
C.Modern Thanksgiving in Canada and America.
D.The customs of Thanksgiving in Canada and America.
23.(8分)Digital grounding(限制)is when parents or caregivers limit or completely take away access to technology from children. According to a study conducted by Pew Research, 65% of parents have digitally grounded their teen by taking away their teen’s cellphone or Internet access as punishment.
Because children are so connected with their technologies, digital grounding may seem like a logical step for parents. Take away a child’s most cherished item and they will quickly lear n from their behavior. But the idea of digital grounding isn’t as clear-cut as that. Instead, it may be a lose-lose situation for parents and kids, alike.
For most parents, the goal of grounding isn’t to make their children unhappy or sad. It is to teach a lesson in the hope that they won’t engage in whatever behavior got them in trouble in the first place. Unfortunately, though, digital grounding is often just punishment, not discipline. If a child stays out past curfew(约定的最晚回家时间), a punishment would be hitting or yelling at them. Discipline would be not letting them go out the next weekend because they failed to follow rules.
We’ve all been there—we’ve caught our child doing something wrong and in the heat of the moment laid out a strict punishment. We may have been feeling hot-headed, embarrassed, or upset. Often, though, these punishments don’t align(结盟)with the bad behavior.
While digital grounding may solve the problem temporarily, it won’t provide children with the guidance they need to act appropriately in the future. Instead of grounding, show your child what they did wrong and give them the chance to act differently. This way, they will learn from their mistakes in a practical manner and figure out ways to be safe and smart with technology.
There’s n o denying it: technology is here for the long-haul. This is why some parenting experts don’t recommend digitally grounding your children. It doesn’t focus on the end goal of safe behavior. They recommend teaching them good habits as soon as possible, rather than taking away their technology. By digitally grounding them, you are putting a bandage over the wound, rather than treating it.
Now, when we say that digital grounding is a lose-lose situation, we’re not saying that disciplining your children in general is a lose-lose situation. Discipline is a great way to teach children lessons, when used appropriately.
1、Which of the following is a proper form of discipline according to the author? A.Hitting or yelling at children.
B.Laying out a strict punishment in the heat of the moment.
C.Taking away access to cellphones from children completely.
D.Forbidding kids to go out the next weekend if they stay out past curfew.
2、What does the author think of digital grounding?
A.It benefits children a great deal.
B.It is no better than disciplining.
C.Parents can use it to correct kids’ behavior.
D.Neither parents nor children gain benefits from it.
3、What does the author suggest parents do instead of grounding?
A.Give kids more free time. B.Help kids form good habits.
C.Act appropriately in public. D.Put a bandage over the wound.
4、What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To inform us of ways of punishing kids.
B.To explain what digital grounding means.
C.To show how to parent children in digital times.
D.To prove digital grounding is not a good parenting way.
24.(8分)The Lifecycle of a T-shirt
We all probably have a lot of T-shirts, but do you ever stop and think about the influence of a T-shirt on the planet? You’d probably be surprised to learn what's involved in the lifecycle of just one T-shirt.
There are 5 major stages: material, production, shipping, use and disposal. The material stage involves farming, irrigating, fertilizing, harvesting and ginning. While cotton is a natural fiber and not as harmful to the environment as manmade fibers, it still takes a toll in the material and production stages. Commercial cotton farming uses a large amount of water, and the use of pesticides (杀虫剂)is widespread across the globe, especially in cotton farming. Studies have shown that farmers spend around $4.1 billion on pesticides annually, of which 25% was spent on cotton crops in the US.
Once the cotton is grown and harvested, so begins the production stage: spinning, knitting, bleaching, dyeing, cutting, sewing, etc.——these processes also use a great deal of water and energy. Commercial dyes and bleaches are harmful pollutants and can eventually pollute groundwater.
After the T-shirt is produced, it enters the transportation stage. This often involves overseas shipping. Take a look in your closet. Chances are that most of your cotton garments (衣服)are made in China or India. Garments can be shipped via plane, ship or truck…,all of which spill CO2 into the atmosphere. Calculations show that C02 emissions from light trucks alone amount to 1.15 pounds per mile.
Once the T-shirt reaches the retail market, it is purchased. This stage may seem like the leastenvironmentally damaging part. But consider the number of times you’ve washed and dried your favorite T-shirt. Washing machines are certainly becoming more
efficient. However, the average American household does 400 loads of laundry per year, using about 40 gallons of water per load. Such excessive water use is combined with the large amount of energy used by dryers.
The final stage of life is disposal. This releases harmful emissions, or involves a landfill where cotton takes years to break down. Current US records show that an estimated 15% of clothes and shoes are recycled, which means that consumers send a shocking 85% of these materials to landfills.
We all need new clothes every once in a while, but let’s all try to keep in mind what goes into the production of clothing... It has a real impact on the planet.
There are a lot of things you can do to help reduce your impact. Reuse and recycle cl othes. If they’re too worn out to wear, cut them up and use them as cleaning rags. Donate them to charity or another organization that recycles textiles. When possible, make an effort to buy organic cotton. Turn down the thermostat on your washer, and line dry your clothes when the weather will allow it.
1、What can be inferred from this passage?
A.The production process may affect water safety.
B.The clothing cost is relatively low in China and India.
C.Cotton clothes are buried because they are hard to break down.
D.The use stage is the least environmentally harmful of the five stages.
2、We can learn from the passage that in the US .
A.pesticides in cotton farming cost over 4 billion dollars every year
B.C02 emissions of land transport amount to 1.15 pounds per mile
C.about 15% of the clothes and shoes are made of materials that are recycled D.about 16, 000 gallons of water is used annually by an average family on laundry 3、The underlined phrase “takes a toll” probably means “”.
A.wastes water B.has a bad effect
C.uses energy D.takes a lot of time
4、What is the purpose of this article?
A.To encourage people to donate clothes to charity.
B.To introduce the five stages in the lifecycle of clothing.
C.To persuade people to purchase more organic cotton.
D.To promote eco-friendly actions related to clothes.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Ladies and gentlemen,
Good morning, I’m Li Hua from Fujian, China. It’s my great honor to be here to say something about the global water shortage and ways of dealing with it.
As we know, the global water shortage is becoming increasingly severe mainly due to global warming, environment pollution and the ever-increasing population. Therefore, it’s high time we did something about it.
Firstly, an effective way, I think, is to reserve water in a scientific way for future use.
Secondly, new methods need to be developed to use the existing water resources, for example, turning sea water into fresh water. Thirdly, we must stop water pollution by law. Last but least, it’s everyone’s responsibility to make good use of water, such as recycling and saving water in our daily life.
In conclusion, people around the world should be aware of the real situation of water shortage, protect the present water resources and explore potential ones scientifically.
Th at’s all. Thank you.。
