Considering the natural beauty that Alaska’s capital has to offer, it is no wonder tourism is one of the c ity’s biggest industries. Juneau is located in southeastern Alaska and its population is approximately 27,000 people. Juneau is surrounded by Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts,as well as by beautiful snow-capped glaciers and sparkling waterways which reflect images of the picturesque city.
Juneau was founded in 1880 by two gold prospectors, Joseph Juneau and Richard Harris. After they struck gold, word spread and the population expanded rapidly. Miners came from near
and far to harvest the riches. Others came to work in the fur trading centers and the fisheries. Eventually the miners decided to name the new town Juneau and the district, Harrisburg.
Juneau continued to grow and prosper. In 1900,Juneau became the capital of Alaska. The government offices were not actually moved until 1906. Juneau replaced Sitka, which was the capital at the time. When Alaska became a state in the Union in 1959, Juneau became the state capital.
In 1976 Alaskans voted to name Willow, a town north of Anchorage, as Alaska’s new capita l. They felt Juneau was a city on the decline. After the economy picked up, in 1982. Alaskans voted to retain Juneau as state capital.
Due to the limited amount of level land in Juneau, roads throughout the city are narrow and long, with steeply angled cross streets. Juneau is the only state capital in the country only accessible by water or air. The proximity of glaciers would make road building costly and damaging to the environment.
The fact that cruise ships, ferry boats and airplanes are the only means of transportation to the city has not affected the number of people who visit. The largest tourism season is the summer. Sometimes as many as five cruise ships arrive in one day, dropping off between 400 to 1,000 tourists interested in visiting local shops and attractions.
When people want a break from life in downtown Juneau, they can visit some of the fascinating sites surrounding the city. One of the biggest attractions is the Tongass National Forest, a 16.8 million acre forest consisting of spruce, hemlock, cedar and other tree types. Tongass, the largest National Forest in the United States, covers about 75 percent of all the land in southeastern Alaska. Tongass is managed as a working forest, which means logging, mining and recreational activities, such as camping and hiking, are allowed.
The woodlands are just one of the area’s memorable sites. East of Juneau lies the spectacular Juneau Icefield. The icefield stretches for nearly 1,200 square miles. The icefield is the source of more than 30 valley glaciers. Glaciers are extended masses of ice formed by years of accumulated falling snow. Valley glaciers descend from high mountains and they move very slowly. Presently, these glaciers are all gradually retreating back to the mountains.
Today Juneau continues to grow and prosper. The city serves as the center of trade for the northern half of the state. The surrounding snow-covered glaciers, snow-capped mountains, sparkling waters and towering forests add charm to this unique city.

What's a good holiday like? Good rests and relaxation are necessary. We can goto visit cartoon shows or do much more reading which is not possible to do when weare at school. Maybe it is a good idea to pay a visit to see those lovely wild animals.
However, holiday does not mean you won't take care of your homework. Youhave to make a good plan to make sure you finish the homework first. It is a verygood opportunity for us to review what we have learned at school. It is alsoa righttime to adjust our mood and attitude.
I think this is a nice holiday.
