第一节选择题(共15小题,每小题2分,共30分)
A
My 17-year-old daughter went off to college and having her away from home brought back memories of watching Peter Pan when she was little. In the classic TV production, one scene in particular impressed me: when Mrs. Darling puts her children into bed. As she turns off the last of the night light, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says, “Dear night lights, protect my sleeping children.” As a mother, I know how much she loves her children.
It has been several weeks since we took our daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting well after a short period of homesickness. For us, though, it’s another story. Like most parents, I love checking in on my children at nigh t. But now she’s gone, and I find night times the hardest. I miss her most at night.
In my neighborhood, most of the parents whose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. My husband is filled with anxiety. One friend talked about getting this sick feeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college drop-off. We complained that many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while we had them.
For us moms, seeing Toy Story 3 only made the sadness worse as we watched the character Andy, who is the same age as our kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. And it’s not just “first-time” parents like me. Two moms who have kids already well into college said the separation didn’t get any easier. “You feel like something has been taken away from inside you,” said one of them.
I imagine things will get easier with time, especially as I see my daughter adjust to college life. Meanwhile, as I keep my cell phone close to me in bed and text my daughter goodnight and sweet dreams every night, I like to think at messages serve as a night light that keeps her safe.
21. The writer was deeply impressed by the scene in Peter Pan because ________.
A. she watched the scene with her daughter
B. the scene was very exciting and interesting
C. the scene showed a mother’s deep love for her children
D. the scene taught her and her daughter a good lesson
22. After her daughter went to college, the writer ________.
A. often cried as she missed her daughter so much
B. didn’t get used to the change for a long time
C. realized she hadn’t done enough for her daughter
D. failed to have a good sleep every night
23. What is the underlined word “melancholy” in Paragraph 3 similar in meaning to?
A. Happiness.
B. Anger.
C. Sadness.
D. Excitement.
24. According to the last paragraph, why did the writer keep her cell phone close to her in bed?
A. To call her daughter any time.
B. To wait for her daughter’s calls.
C. To wait for her daughter’s messages.
D. To say good night to her daughter.

Reading is the key to success. Apparently every successful person develops a passion for reading. This is
because reading is a key element to obtain the information required to understand something. For instance, lawyers have to study and learn every established law on their specific branches. Sometimes the law changes according to people’s needs. A good lawyer has to be informed about the latest news in the court. A doctor has to be informed of the latest advances in medicine.
Reading is very important for all mankind. Everything is relative in this world, especially reading. Reading can open many doors and it can lead you into a path of success. Studies have confirmed that reading to your unborn child is very good. This way your child will develop a passion for reading.
How do you develop a passion for reading? There is only one way you can boost your passion for reading. Let me explain this to you. If you want to learn how to ride a bike, you have to get on the bike as many times as possible until you have learned. It works the same way with reading. If you want to boost your reading, take a book and read it all the way through. When you finish reading your first book, take another book and do the same. Try to read as much as you can. If you are going out, grab a magazine, a book, an article or something to read.
There is a very important factor behind the reading—reading comprehension. It’s what makes you understand the meaning behind the text. Let’s assume tha t you read a document and you are supposed to explain the meaning of the document. How would you explain the document if you couldn’t capture the message of the author?

A. following the natural time order

28.What do you suppose the following paragraph will talk about ?
A. Ways to improve reading comprehension.
B. Famous people who love reading.
C. The importance of reading at school.
D. Popular reading websites.

Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can’t make us tire. It sounds absurd. But a years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional(情绪的) attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J.A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated---those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
29. What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood.
B. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue
C. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn after a day’s work
D. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
30. According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?
A. Challenging mental work.
B. Physical labor
C. Endless tasks.
D. Unpleasant emotions
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ idea?
A.He doubts them.
B. He agrees with them.
C. He argues against them.
D. He hesitates to accept them.
32. We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to_____.
A. have some good food.
B. exercise regularly
C. enjoy their work
D. discover fatigue toxins
