18、The George Washington School had been standing for more than 100 years. The school building was in good shape, but behind it wa s an old basketball court. The court’s surface had been broken and was overgrown with
weeds(种子). The fence(篱笆)around the court was too old, and parts of it lay on the ground. The basketball hoops (篮圈)were bent and rusted(生锈).
One cold day in February, Mr Garson, a biology teacher, was taking a walk during his lunch break. He passed the old basketball court. “What an ugly sight!” he said, in a low and sad voice. As he looked at the empty court, he imagined. In his mind, he pictured something quite different from what he actually saw.
Mr Garson asked the school board for money to turn his vision into reality. In April he organized a group of community volunteers to tear up the old basketball court and take it away. Then he tried to let a local farmer bring trucks of good soil(土)free of charge, which several students spread over the field. A group of parents volunteered to build a new fence around the land. Mr Garson bought some garden tools. He also bought seeds and young plants. In May students planted tomatoes, potatoes, corn, onions, and peppers.
