13、Now people who are in different parts of the world communicate easier than before. But it is a little hard to understand each othe r well. Some of them may not understand others’ words, so it’s easy to make a few mistakes.
For example, an important question about eating out, is who pays for the meal. If a friend of yours suggests you have lunch with him, you might simply say something like this, “I’m afraid it will have to be some place inexpensive, as I have very little money.” The other person might say, “OK. I will meet you at McDonald’s.” This means it is agreed that the two will go Dutch, that is, each person pays for himself. He might also say, “Oh, no. I want to take you to lunch at Johnson’s”, or “ I want you to try the steak(牛排) there. It is great.” This means that the person intends to pay the bill for both of you. It may be hard to believe, but the American Revolution(革命)—the war that freed the American states from British control—began over a cup of tea. Tea was not the only thing that caused the war, of course, but it played a very big part. The British people’s love of tea is well-known. When the British won control over mush of North America in the early 1700s, they brought their tea- drinking habits with them. Tea quickly became the continents most popular drink. As tea could not be grown locally, just as in Britain, it was shipped into the country—mostly from India.
In the early 1700s, the Britain government made a special deal with the East India Company, as an English trading company. They agreed that no other company was allowed to bring tea to Britain or any country controlled by Britain, including America. It was a great deal for the East India Company, since it meant that the company could decide whatever price it wanted for its products. Anditalways decided on a high price!
In North America, the local people did not like having to pay such high prices. Instead of overpaying for tea from the British, they turned to Dutch traders, who secretly brought tea to the country that was just as good—and much less expensive. Although this broke the law, the American people didn’t care. They got the same cup of tea at a much lower price.
The East India Company, however, didn’t like this at all. By the 1760s, they were losing millions of pounds each year to Dutch traders—a huge amount of money in a time when £60 a year was considered a good income. Instead of reducing their prices to compete with the Dutch, the company asked the British government for help and the government agreed. In 1767, the British introduced new law that increased the prices of all goods which were brought into America. These laws helped make the East India Company even richer and forced local people to pay much more for everything. The American leaders asked the British government not to do so, but the British refused to listen. These unfair laws increased Americans’ anger about British rule and the rest, as they say, is history.

15、When I was about seven or eight years old, I once went into the barn (马厩) one evening where my dad was doing his daily work. I was surprised to see him wearing his hat backwards. It looked funny.
When I asked Dad why he put his hat backwards, he smiled and gave me an explanation. There was a large water tank for the cattle that had to be filled every day. Since it took a long time to finish the work, he would turn the water on and then go about doing other things like cleaning the barn or feeding the cattle, which usually cost him twenty minutes or even more time. The danger, of course, was that if he forgot to turn the water off, the tank would overflow and water would be wasted, which would make a mess.
Then he told me the reason why he had his hat turned around. When he finished other work and began to take off his work clothes, he would notice as he removed his hat that the visor (帽舌) was not where it was supposed to be. This would remind him that the water was still running. Then he would go back to the barn and turn it off.
I have seen my dad develop many other systems over the years. And I will never forget how helpful and valuable they are. Some may have even been life-saving.
Sometimes, people may forget some things. So they will easily make mistake though they may try their best. Using some good methods can help them operate more effectively. In ord er not to blame others or yourself for mistakes, you’d better look for some ways, whether they are funny or not, as long as they will help you in achieving what you truly wish to do. This could be utility, and as simple as a checklist. Now I’ve used a lot of them, such as putting my car keys in the same place every time. It could be having someone check your work and it could also be a computer program that helps to find out whether your calculations are correct.

After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it wasn’t easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off the raft (木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.
When I came up out of the water, I couldn’t see Jim an ywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no
answer. “He’s dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who’s there?”
“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I’ve fallen off a river boat.”
Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.
A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.
On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn’t break up. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.

When I go to a new place, the first thing I like to do is walking around the streets, to explore and get lost in the city. When I first arrived in Santiago, Chile, and took a walk around the city center, one of the first things I noticed was how many stray dogs there were. The phrase “street dog” or “stray dog” is used to describe a dog with no home, who lives on the streets.
On every corner there was a sleeping dog. At every traffic light there was a dog waiting to cross. By every shop there was a dog waiting for food. At first I was nervous as I thought they might be aggressive or unfriendly. However, I have been here for more than a year now and every stray dog I have seen has been passive (顺从的), quiet and friendly. The dogs are accepted and welcomed here in Chile. I have never seen a street dog being mistreated. In fact, they are often given food and water by the public. Some people even make jackets for the dogs or put out beds or kennels for them to sleep in.
The dogs do not have an easy life: they are often hungry, cold or injured. The government does not provide much care for these dogs.
Some people believe that the situation is getting out of control and that it is unacceptable to have so many dogs on the streets. The dogs can sometimes cause problems such as car accidents if they run into the road. There are around 2.5 million stray dogs in Chile and the dog population is growing faster than the human population. Many Chileans think that all the stray dogs should be sterilized (绝育的) so that they cannot breed (繁殖). Others think that the stray dog population should be culled (i.e. reducing the population by killing them).
The future of street dogs is uncertain but for now it looks like they are here to stay, with their population increasing year by year.
1.What did the writer find when she was in Chile?

A.They are well taken care of by the government.
B.They live a happy and easy life in the city.
C.They often receive help from local people.
D.Many of them have been mistreated.
3.What can be learnt from the article?
A.The population of street dogs in Chile will soon be reduced.
B.The Chilean government is working to improve the life of street dogs.
C.Street dogs are responsible for most of Chile’s car accidents.
D.Street dogs are a cause for worry for some people in Chile.

A.增长的B.有吸收力的C.积极的D.有攻击性的
5.The article was mainly written to ___________.

18、Elephants losing tusks
People killing elephants for their tusks has long been a problem worldwide. Although laws have been introduced to ban the selling of tusks, they have not been enough to save the elephants.
But the giant animals have now “developed” their own solution to stay safe from hunters----by not growing tusks at all.
Scientists found that among female African elephants, as many as 98 percent of them now have no tusks, reported The Independent newspaper. The number was 15 percent in 1998 and only 1 percent in 1930, according to the BBC.But this solution has less been developed by elephants themselves, and more by evolution.
Evolution is all about natural selection(选择). When an environment changes, for example, animals and plants that can deal with the change will stay alive while others won’t. And for elephants, the change came when hunters started killing them f or their tusks. As a result, elephants with big tusks couldn’t stay alive because hunters wanted to shoot them. Those born with tusks managed to stay alive and give their “tuskless” genes(基因)to their babies. As a result, more and more elephants are now being born without tusks.
But this solution, as effective(有效地)as it might be, is a high price to pay for elephants. Tusks are important and play a number of roles, especially for male elephants, including fighting with other males, lifting and digging things up.
This is why scientists hope there can be other ways to protect elephants against hunters. They believe that when they are less likely to be killed , elephants will be able to grow tusks again.
To David Cowdrey, head of Policy and Campaigns at the International Found for Animal Welfare UK, however, this is not very likely to happen in the near future.
“Unfortunately, it comes down to the markets,” he told The Guardian. “As long as people will pay high prices for products that come from endangered animal and plants, they’re going to have price on them and that causes the hunting.”
1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Elephants learned to lift and dig things up without tusks.
B.Elephants chose not to grow tusks because of their dangerous environment.
C.Elephants with no tusks had a greater chance of passing down their genes.
D.A tuskless elephant gives birth to more baby elephants than an elephant with big tusks.
2.The underlined word “evolution” in paragraph 4 means “_________” ?
A.gradual change B.sudden development C.complete loss D.rapid growth
3.What can you learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.We should work out a better solution to protect elephants.
B.People should pay lower prices for products made with elephant tusks.
C.Elephants’ living environments will soon be improved.
D.The key to elephant protection is stopping the trade in tusk products.
