阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

As a firefighter in New York, between alarms I used to rush to the company office to read The New York Times. One day, an article caught my eyes, which I took to be a calumny(诽谤)on William Butler Yeats, my favorite poet. And I determined to write a letter to the editor of the Sunday Book Review. I don’t know why I felt it my duty to defend the reputation of the poet, but I just knew that I had to write that letter.
Until that point in my life I had not written much of value — a few poems and short stories. I sent some materials to various magazines but found no one was willing to publish my works. It was a special and unexpected delight, then, when I learned something I’d written would finally be printed. Ironically it wasn’t one of my poems or short stories — it was my letter to The New York Times.
Later, I received a letter from True Magazine and one from The New Yorker, asking for an interview. I also received a phone call from a famous publishing house that asked if I might be interested in writing a book about my life. I had little confidence in my ability to write a whole book, though I thought that my work as a firefighter was a worthy subject. So I wrote a collection of stories of firefighters, and it went on to sell two million copies.
I had found out that the writing was a natural result of the passion I felt. One’s education and experience will guide him toward making a right decision, but his passion will enable him to make a difference in whatever he does.
56. Why did the author write a letter to The New York Times?
A. To publish some articles he wrote in his spare time.

A. he chose to work as a firefighter
B. his letter to The New York Times was published
C. he began to write some poems and stories

59. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Life is full of uncertainties.
B. Passion contributes to one’s success.
C. Experience plays a key role in one’s work.
D. Courage contributes a lot to creative work.

Recently, a couple in New Zealand were forbidden from naming their baby son 4Real. Even though New Zealand has quite liberal (开明的) rules about naming children, names beginning with a number are not allowed. They decided to call him Superman instead.
In many countries around the world, unusual names for children are becoming more popular, especially since the increasing trend for famous people to give their children special names. In Britain, you can call a child almost anything you like — the only restrictions on parents relate to offensive words.
Some parents choose names which come from popular cultures. For example, there have been six boys named Gandalf after the character in the Lord of the Rings novels and films. Equally, names relating to sports are fairly common — since 1984,36 children have been called Arsenal after the football team. Other parents like to make up names, or combine names to make their own unique version, a method demonstrated by Jordan, the British model, who recently invented the name Tiáamii for her daughter by combining the names Thea and Amy (the two grandmothers).
In Britain, some names which were previously thought of as old-fashioned have become more popular again, such as Maisie or Ella for a girl, or Alfie or Noah for a boy. But the most popular names are not the wacky ones. The top names are fairly traditional — Jack, Charlie and Thomas for boys and Grace, Ruby and Jessica for girls.
Other countries have much stricter rules when it comes to naming children. Countries including Japan, Denmark, Spain and Germany have an approved list of names from which parents must choose.

A device that stops drivers from falling asleep at the wheel is about to undergo testing at Department of Transport laboratories and could go on sale within 12 months.
The system, called Driver Alert, aims to reduce deadly road accidents by 20%
- 40% that are caused by tiredness. Airline pilots can also use it to reduce the 30% of all pilot-error accidents that are related to fatigue.
Driver Alert is based on a computerized wristband. The device, worn by drivers
or pilots, gives out a sound about every four minutes during a car journey. After each sound the driver must respond by squeezing the steering wheel. A sensor in the wristband detects this pressing action and measures the time between the sound the driver’s response.
Tiredness is directly related to a driver’s response time. Usually, a watchful driver would take about 400 milliseconds to respond, but once that falls to more than 500 milliseconds, it suggests that the driver is getting sleepy.
In such cases the device gives out more regular and louder sounds, showing that the driver should open a window or stop for a rest. If the driver’s response continues to slow down, the sounds become more frequent until a nonstop alarm warns that the driver must stop as soon as possible.
The device has been delivered to the department’s laboratories for testing. If these tests, scheduled for six months’ time, are successful, the makers will bring the product to market within about a year.
63. According to the text, Driver Alert ______.
A.aims to reduce tiredness-related accidents
B.has gone through testing at laboratories
C.aims to prevent drivers from sleeping
D.has been on sale for 12 months
64. How should a driver respond to the sounds from Driver Alert?

65.We can learn form the text that the driver needs to stop for a break when his response time is ______.
A.about 400 milliseconds B. below 500 milliseconds
C.over 500 milliseconds D. about 4 minutes
66. When the driver gets sleepy while driving, Driver Alert ______.

Starting the day on an egg could keep your blood pressure (血压) under control, research suggests. Scientists have shown that eggs produce proteins with a function similar to that of powerful blood pressure lowering drugs.
The researchers, from the University of Alberta in Canada, showed that when eggs come in contact with stomach enzymes (酶) they produce a protein that acts in the same way as ACE inhibitors, drugs taken by millions around the world to lower blood pressure. Fried eggs proved particularly effective, but more work is needed to show the effects outside a lab and in the human body.
Earlier this month, British researchers declared that, contrary to popular beliefs, it is healthy to go to work on an egg. They concluded that the type of cholesterol (胆固醇) found in eggs has little effect on increasing heart disease risks.
Researcher Professor Bruce Griffin, from the University of Surrey, said, "The wrong beliefs linking egg eating to high blood cholesterol and heart disease must be corrected. The amount of fat in our diet has an effect on blood cholesterol that is several times greater than the relatively small amount of cholesterol found in eggs. The UK public do not need to limit the number of eggs they eat. They can be
encouraged to include them in a healthy diet as they are one of nature's most nutritious foods."
The British Heart Foundation dropped its three-egg-a-week limit in 2005. However, almost half of Britons believe the limit still applies.

68. According to what Professor Bruce said, eggs________.
A. are the most nutritious food
B. have no effect on blood cholesterol

A. drugs to lower blood pressure will be replaced by eating eggs
B. stomach enzymes mixed with eggs can cure heart diseases
C. most Britons agree the three-egg-a-week limit should be dropped
D. about 50% of Britons think eating an egg a day is bad for their health
70. The text is meant________.
A. to introduce scientific findings about eggs
B. to introduce a medicine made from eggs
C. to tell people how to lower their blood pressure
D. to advise people to eat as many eggs as possible
