大学英语综合教程3Unit-8答案
Unit 8Part I Pre-Reading TaskScript for the recording:A Clone of Our OwnWill humans be the next clones? The technology still has a long way to go before it's considered safe to try on humans. But even if it were safe, would it be right? Let's hear what Professor Hank Greely of Stanford University has to say on this topic .Interviewer: When will we clone a human?Greely: That's not a simple question. I think we have to ask ourselves: is there something about the technology that is so wrong or so evil that it shouldn't be used at all? Or should it be judged according to its intended uses? Interviewer: What are acceptable uses?Greely: We really need to distinguish between different types of cloning. If we use cloning to grow a new liver, I don't think many people will have problems with that - as long as it's growing a liver and not taking a liver from a cloned person. Human reproductive cloning is much trickier. Interviewer: Why?Greely: Safety. There's still a very low success rate. With Dolly, the first cloned lamb, 29 treated eggs were implanted in sheep to get one Dolly. We don't worry too much about sheep miscarriages or about deformed lambs being born. But we would with humans. And we wouldn't know if a human clone would be healthy. Interviewer: Dolly appears to be healthy. Why wouldn't a human clone be so?Greely: There may be cell changes that are initially invisible and only show themselves as the clone ages. There's also a problem with the ends of chromosomes in cells, whichshorten until the cells can no longer reproduce. We know that Dolly's chromosomesare shorter than those of other sheep her age, and we don't know what that means yet.- 188 -Appendix IInterviewer: Suppose human cloning was safe. In what situations do you see cloning being used?Greely: Helping parents who are having difficulty having children would be one area. Interviewer: Are there other situations where it might be acceptable to create a human clone?Greely: A situation where parents want to create a new child to be a bone marrow donor for an older sick child. That's a real tough one. But that issue might never arise if we succeed in growing bone marrow outside the body. Another situation is cloning a child who has accidentally died. I think that's disturbing. But I've never been in that position and so I don't feel comfortable saying whether that's a good application or a bad application of the technology. Interviewer: What about cloning a Hitler or Michael Jordan ?Greely: I think we can dismiss those as bad or even silly applications. Interviewer: Is there anything else you'd like to say about the future of human cloning?Greely: Even if cloning humans were safe and we as a society had decided it was right and proper for reproductive purposes, I don't think we'd see a lot of clones. The oldfash-ioned way ofmaking babies has a lot going for it: It's easy, traditional, well understood, and occasionallyeven pleasant. Opinions differ widely as to whether human cloning should be prohibited.True, human cloning clearly has much to offer. By using cells from the patient's own body to grow organs to replace diseased parts, the problem of rejection can be avoided. This might prove useful, for example, in fighting leukemia through bone marrow transplants. But what about making an identical copy of a human being?Ian Wilmut, who created Dolly the sheep, finds the idea offensive. Professor Hank Greely at Stanford also finds the suggestion deeply disturbing. For one thing, the technology is far from perfect. There may be lots of miscarriages and deformed clones. What shall we do with them? Shall we keep the healthy clones and just kill off the ones with a deformed body or defective brains? That, I am afraid, would offend the religious beliefs of a great many people. For another, even if the- 142 - Appendix Ic5. b6. The government should enact laws to prohibit it before it is too late. Non-reproductive cloning, on the other hand, should be encouraged. It may mean hope to many who are waiting desperately for organs for transplantation to save their lives. If used wisely the technology may eventually free humans from many kinds of suffering that today seem unavoidable.(273 words).。

Ⅰ.阅读理解AAfter the earthquake had stopped, when the rescuers reached the ruins of a young woman's house, they saw her dead body through the cracks. But her pose was somehow strange that she knelt on her knees like a person was worshiping(做礼拜);her body was leaning forward, and her two hands were supported by an object. The collapsed house had crashed her back and her head. With so many difficulties, the leader of the rescue team put his hand through a narrow gap on the wall to reach the woman's body.He was hoping that this woman could be still alive. However, the cold and stiff body told him that she had passed away for sure.He and the rest of the team left this house and were going to search the next collapsed building. For some reasons, the team leader was driven by compelling force to go back to the ruined house of the dead woman.Again,he knelt down and used his hand through the narrow cracks to search the little space under the dead body.Suddenly,he screamed with excitement,“A child! There is a child!”The whole team worked together; carefully they removed the piles of ruined objects around the dead woman. There was a 3-month-old little boy wrapped in a flowery blanket under his mother's dead body.Obviously, the woman had made a sacrifice for saving her son. When her house was falling, she used her body to make a cover to protect her son.The little boy was still sleeping peacefully when the team leader picked him up.The medical doctor came quickly to exam the little boy. After he opened the blanket,he saw a cell phone. There was a text message on the screen. It said,“If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.”This cell phone was passing around from one hand to another.Everybody that read the message wept.“If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.”Such is the mother's love for her child![语篇解读]本文为一篇记叙文。
2019版一轮优化探究英语(人教版)练习:必修三 Unit 2 Healthy eating Word版含答案
Ⅰ.阅读理解ABiologist Robert Pitman and his colleagues tracked orcas,or killer whales, and humpback whales off the coast of Western Australia. To research further, the scientists attached a tracker to a female orca, which allowed them to use satellites to monitor her movements. They followed her for six days.During that time, the orca attacked eight young humpback whales.During the seven attacks, the orca killed the humpback whale calf (幼兽) on three occasions. But the story doesn't end there.Humpback whales themselves are popularly thought to be large but generally, passive creatures.Pitman's study findings may let people think otherwise. When chased by orcas, humpback whales are known to try to outswim orcas. They are thought to do this at high speed so that the orcas can't keep up.On some occasions, the humpback whales sought out protection. They swam to shallow water, nearby reefs,or even under the researchers' boats. These ways often reduced the attack. But at other times, the humpback whales decided to stay and fight. As the orcas approached, the mother humpback would sometimes move her calf to her side,or lift it out of the water using her head or flippers. She also blew huge breaths of air to disturb the orcas, and lunged or charged at them, slashing(劈)and slapping her tail and flippers.Perhaps most surprisingly, humpback whales also have adult “escorts (护卫队)” that try to protect calves that are not their own, joining the mother in defending the smaller whale. These escort whales either charged at the orcas,or placed themselves between the attackers and calves, slashing their tails and flippers.Despite the efforts of the mother whales and escorts, the orcas were more often than not successful in their attacks. But the presence of the escorts did reduce how many times a whale calf was killed.[语篇解读]本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是科学家使用科学仪器来观察杀人鲸是如何追杀驼背鲸及后者是如何反击和保护幼小的驼背鲸的。
