ABrian arrived at the San Francisco airport two hours before the flight to Paris. He was wearing three shirts, a jacket, two pairs of socks, a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He was carrying one small backpack, which was very full, but he didn’t have any other luggage. Brian needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter. Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package.“Give this package to Jean Paul at the airport in Paris. He will have a sign with your name on it. I think you can find him easily,” Tony said, “You don’t have any luggage, right?”“Only this backpack,” Brian answered. “You said I could bring one carry-on bag.”“That’s right. One carry-on bag is fine. Have a good trip.”“Thanks.”Is Brian a criminal(罪犯)?Not at all. He is an air-courier. And he paid only $110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris. Air-couriers get cheap airline tickets because they take important packages and papers to foreign countries. Businesses sometimes need to get packages and papers to people in foreign countries by the next day. Often, the only way they can do this is to use an air-courier company. It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air-courier, but it is quick.Every year about 80,000 people worldwide travel as air-couriers. The number of tickets for the air-courier travel is growing by about 10 percent a year. However, air-courier travel isn’t for everyone. But if you have very little money, you can be flexible(灵活的) about your travel plans, and don’t mind wearing the same clothes for a week, it can be a great way to take a vacation! 26.Why was Brian wearing so many clothes for his travel?A.Because they were the uniforms for air-couriers.B.Because that made him easier to be recognized.C.Because his backpack had no room for his clothes.D.Because he did not have any luggage with him.27.An air-courier is a person who ________.A.manages a business company in foreign countriesB.organizes international flights for touristsC.travels around the world with cheap ticketsD.delivers papers and packages to foreign countries28.Businesses choose the air-courier service because ________.A.it costs less B.it is flexibleC.it saves time D.it grows fast29.One of the disadvantages of traveling as an air-courier is that he ________.A.cannot decide when and where to travelB.cannot take any luggage with himC.has to wear two pairs of jeansD.saves little money from the travel30.The author of the text mainly ________.A.describes the activities of a law-breakerB.suggests an ideal way to travelC.argues against the air-courier travelD.tells us about a developing businessBHow I Turned to Be OptimisticI began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then.I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see — the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then. The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost — having to study inthree schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times”.My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives. From my experiences I have learned one important rule:almost all common troubles eventually go away!Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little!I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.31.How did the author get to know America?A.From her relatives. B.From her mother.C.From books and pictures. D.From radio programs.32.Upon leaving for America the author felt ________.A.confused B.excitedC.worried D.amazed33.For the first two years in New York, the author ________.A.often lost her way B.did not think about her future C.studied in three different schools D.got on well with her stepfather 34.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?A.She worked as a translator. D.She helped her family with her English. 35.The author believes that ________.A.her future will be free from troublesB.it is difficult to learn to become patientC.there are more good things than bad thingsD.good things will happen if one keeps tryingCWhy do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reasoncould be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.“Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the ageing process.”What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s.“This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.36. The underlined word “longevity” in the second paragraph probably refers to “________”.A. healthB. long lifeC. ageingD. effect37. The text mainly talks about ________.A. men’s heart cellsB. women’s ageing process、C. the gender differenceD. hearts and long life38. according to the text, the UK scientists have known that ________.A. women have more cells than men when they are bornB. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beatC. the female heart loses few of the cells with ageD. women never lose their pumping power with age39. Having enough free time is more important to most Americans than being rich, according to a new poll.Only 13 percent of more than 2,400 people questioned in the telephone poll ranked being wealthy as most important to them, while 67 percent ranked free time as their top priority, higher than having a successful career, getting married, and having children. “Everyone wants free time to do the things they want to do, young, middle-aged or old,” said Richard Morin, of the Pew Social & Demogra phic Trends Project, which conducted the survey. “So our desire to play unites us.”The poll also showed that people who were university educated valued career success over wealth, so did middle-aged people. Not surprisingly, those who didn’t have money, ranked wealth very highly. This included minorities, first generation Americans and less educated people. The survey also revealed that a disproportionate(不成比例的) number of people under the age of 30 and retirees in the group made $20,000 or less a year. But the emphasis on wealth lessens with age, with younger people putting value on it but hardly any seniors. “It just diminishes with time as the reality sets in that you would never be rich,” Morin said. “But also, the reality sets in that you don’t have to be rich to lead a very comfortable and fulfilling life.”While wealth was not at the top of people’s list of priorities, 43 percent still said it was somewhat important.41.The poll showed that the majority of American people ranked ________ as the most important.A.wealth B.a successful careerC.marriage D.free time42.Who cares least for wealth, according to the passage?A.Young people.
5w1h(who, what, when, where, which, how)等因素来进行锁定。

"Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?"E.Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels(标签) to show that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing(制造) of clean and safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising.F.The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of "Buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it." “Confidence” is probably one of the most noticeable traits(品质)in the Americans. They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk.Living and competing with all these confidence American students,I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and instructor. As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind.Don’t mind if it sounds simple or silly.Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all. What’s worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue—this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive.Being confidence for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it.Pretending to understand what you actually did not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace. But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their Speeches.(The course I’m teaching here is Public Speaking).Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won’t be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program.1.To compete with American students it’s very important to .A.be quite confident B.be polite and friendly C.have more discussions with them D.understand what they think about2.A professor will have the worst opinion of a student who .A.gives a silly or simple answerB.tries to seize any chance to speak in classC.shows no interest in the courseD.is considered to have no opinion of his own3.The author is most likely to feel embarrassed if .A.he asks a student to repeat what he has saidB.the students bargain with himC.he pretends to know what he doesn’tD.he has to give a speech4.We learn from the second paragraph that .A.we should also remain modest in AmericaB.modesty doesn’t help you much in AmericaC.Americans also like modest peopleD.modesty can help you through an American graduate program5.The passage is mainly developed by .A.providing examplesB.making comparisonsC.giving different figuresD.telling personal experiences【参考答案】1---5、ADCBD【阅读理解】Arthur Miller(19152005)is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller's father had moved to the USA from AustriaHungary, drawn like so many others by the“Great American Dream”. However, he experienced seve re financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early 1930s.Miller's most famous play, Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into trouble with this system. Willy is “burnt out” and i n the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment: if he can't do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end. When it was first staged in 1949, the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury,Connecticut, on the evening of February 10, 2005, the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.

Examples of prejudice in schools include believin g that some students are particular type of people simply bec ause of the way they dress or act, or believing that a certain g roup is good at sports simply because many peop1e in that gr oup are goad at sports. Another example is believing that a b oy is good at science because many boys are good at scienc e.I would like to cite more examples from the English literatur e. The best example of “prejudice” can be found in Jane Aust en’s novels. Her novels in the history of English literature are popularly known as "novels of manners".Thus you can clearly understand that where manners and social behavior are conc erned,"prejudice" is inevitable ! Austen' s famous novel Pride and Pr ejudice is the best example in this respect. When you read the novel, the very first line that would strike you is “it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”It is an example of 1 8th century English middle class prejudice that eventually look ed upon women just as an object that would serve as the basi c sign for a man to establish his manliness and his superior a nd well acquired financial status. This novel is chiefly about cl ass division, social norms and the consequent human behavior. The chara cters Elizabeth and Darcy,in their journey of 1ife through the course of the novel, highlig ht their personal prejudices towards one another that arise fro m their different social strata(阶层).Darcy,a rich man , at first ,fails to admire the beauty and intelligence of Elizabeth becaus e of her low social status:"she is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me;”and Elizabeth, proud of her "first impressions",failed to understand the well natured man under the proud and unfriendly Darcy.1. What is "prejudice" defined in this passage?A. Prejudice is a reasonable idea that is based on one’s own experience.B. Prejudice is a preference for one group of people or things over another.C. Prejudice is a preconceived opinion before becoming awar e of fact or reason.D. Prejudice is an unreasonable dislike of a particular group of people or things.2. 人教版广东广州高考专题英语高考模拟试卷及解析
人教版广东广州高考专题英语高考模拟1.阅读理解第1题.Wolves use many different types of communication. One way they communicate is through sound. The howl(嗥叫)is a well-known method wolves use to communicate with each other. While howling, wolves often change their voices a lot. As a result, people are sometime "fooled" into believing that there are more wolves than there really are. People have often guessed, after listening to howls, that a pack(群)of wolves contained up to 20 individuals, when there were only 3 or 4. Some people have thought that wolves do that on purpose, in order to fool neighboring packs into believing that there are more animals present than there really are. However, many naturalists and wolf biologists do not accept that idea.Wolves seem to howl for many reasons. They often howl before they go on a hunt, possibly to get the pack together, and they often begin to howl after a successful hunt. That suggests that howling serves to bring a pack together, since wolves often become separated from each other during a hunt. They do not, however, howl while they are hunting. In addition, a wolf may howl alone if having, trouble locating its pack. Surprisingly, pack members seem to recognize each others voices, since individual wolves often have their own way of howling. Wolves will also howl in sadness after the death of their mates.Wolf packs may also howl to communicate with other packs, as two different wolf packs will sometimes answer each others howls. Wolves will also often answer the calls of humans who are pretending to howl like wolves.Wolves howl less often during May and June than they do during the rest of the year. This may be because that is the time that packs are most likely to have young pups(幼崽)present. It is possible that wolf packs who have young pups present often keep silent so they do not attract attention to their location, since pups can be easily hurt by predators(捕食性动物)like bears.(1)People argued about ________.A: how wolves howlB: why wolves howlC: when wolves howlD: where wolves howl(2)Wolves howl in order to ________.A: fool peopleB: fool neighboring packsC: convey different messagesD: make the pack sound stronger(3)Wolves don't howl often in early summer because ________.A: they don't howl when it's hotB: they have to save their energyC: they don't have enough food to eatD: they need to protect the young ones(4)We can learn from the text that ________.A: wolves don't answer humans' callB: a wolf pack consists of about 20 wolvesC: wolves always stay together when huntingD: different wolves have different ways of howling【答案】BCDD【解答】(1)B 推理判断题。

The world is filled with smart, talented and gifted people. We meet them every day.A few days ago,my car was not running well.I pulled it into a garage, and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine.I was amazed. The sad truth is,great talent is not enough.I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn.I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year.A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase,“They are one skill away from great wealth.”There is an old saying that goes,“Job means ‘just over broke(破产)’”.And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people.Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers“ live within their means”.They work and they pay the bills.Instead I recommend young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn. When I ask the classes I teach,“How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald’s?” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald’s makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious: McDonald’s is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people .They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.1.The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph that .A.he is just one of the talented peopleB.he is ready to help othersC.he has a sharp sense of hearingD.he knows little about car repairing2.The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by .A.spend more than they can affordB.do in their own wayC.live in their own circleD.live within what they earn3.Why do talented people earn so 1ittle according to the author?A.They don’t work hard enoughB.They lack financial intelligenceC.They don’t make full use of their talentsD.They have no specialized skills.4.The success of McDonald's lies in its .A.skills at making hamburgers B.good business systemsC.talented workers D.excellent service5.The main purpose of the author is to tell us .A.how young people can find a satisfactory jobB.what schools should teach studentsC.why so many talented people are poorD.how McDonald’s makes much money【参考答案】1—5、ADBBC阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A.B.C和D项中,选出最佳选项。

5w1h<who, what, when, where, which, how)等因素来进行锁定。
Many people have tried to simplify(简化)the spelling of English words. Unlike other languages, English sometimes spells the same sounds in very different ways. For example, there is "light" but "white", "loan" but "phone", and there are at least seven different ways of pronouncing "ough": "though", "through", "bough", "Cough","enough", "ought" and "thorough".The American President Theodore Roosevelt almost succeeded in simplifying English spelling. In 1906, Andrew Carnegie started the Simplified Spelling Board. He was one of the richest men in the United States of America. The board's plan was to make the spelling of words nearer to the way they sound. For example, the word "though" would be spelt "tho" and "through" would become "thru". Other people on the board were Melvil Dewey, the head of the New York libraries, and Professor Brander Matthews of Columbia University. They explained their idea to President Roosevelt, who thought that it was indeed logical. He immediately asked the government printer to use simplified spelling in all government letters. But people didn't like the change, even if it made life easier. So the new simpler spelling was not popular.More importantly, when the American politicians(政客)discussed the plan, they did not like it either.Because Roosevelt did not want to have any problems with the politicians, he changed his mind and told the printer to go back to the old way of spelling.Since then no one in any government has dared to simplify English spelling. However, people do simplify some words, mainly in advertisements. For example, we often see "tonite" instead of "tonight" and "thru" instead of "through".(1)Many people have tried to simplify English spelling because ________. A: English words are too long to rememberB: there are many mistakes in English wordsC: lots of words are spelt in many different waysD: sometimes the same sounds have different spellings(2)Who is NOT a member of the Simplified Spelling Board?A: Andrew Carnegie.B: Melvil Dewey.C: Theodore Roosevelt.D: Brander Matthews.(3)What was Theodore Roosevelt's attitude towards simplified spelling? A: Worried.B: Supportive.C: Uncertain.D: Doubtful.(4)According to the passage, simplified spelling ________.A: was welcomed by the US politiciansB: changed the way the words soundC: has been used widely for over a centuryD: was first used in US government letters(5)Roosevelt's plan to simplify English spelling ________.A: failed in the endB: proved quite successfulC: won wide supportD: influenced English greatly.【答案】DCBDA【解答】(1)D 细节理解题。

It shows that most students considered understanding spoken English to be their biggest problem on arrival. This was followed by speaking. Writing increased as a problem as stude nts discovered difficulties in writing papers thatthey were now expected to hand in. Reading remained as a significant(显著的) problem. The information gained helped us in determining where special attention should be paid in our course. Although many students have chosen to join the course with a reasonable motivation(动机), we considered it important to note what seemed to encourage interest. Nearly all the students have experienced some kind of grammar-based English teaching in their own country. To use the same method would be self-defeating because it might reduce motivation, especially if it has failed in the past. Therefore a different method may help because it is different.Variety of activity was also seen as a way of maintaining(保持) or increasing motivation. Several years ago we had one timetable that operated throughout, but we soon found that both the students and the teachers lost interest by about halfway through the ten weeks. This led us to a major re-think, so finally we brought it into line with the expressed language needs of the students.65. What is the text mainly about?A. Foreign students have more problems.B. 2023-2024学年广东广州人教版高考专题英语高考模拟1. Most of us get our earliest life lessons from fairy tales, like "True love can overcome anything", and "Even a frog can turn into a prince". However, at a certain age, we start to learn new things about life, particularly that love doesn't always win, and that a frog is just a frog. But somehow, our love for fairy tales never dies. Just look at animated films like The Lion King and Frozen, which have millions of fans, young and old."Fairy tales stay here because they are the stories of our lives in the simplest form," wrote US author Laura Packer on the National Storytelling Network website. "They are stories of love and loss, desire and death, riches and ruin." Fairy tales are all about reality. But if children only see just one side of reality, adults usually see the other. For example, in the 2014 film Maleficent, we're told the tale of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective(视角)of the evil queen. Unlike the children's version of the story, we see that the queen wasn't born evil. Instead, she suffers great losses growing up, leading to the creation of her "evil" side.It looks as if fairy tales aren't just stories our parents read us at bedtime. They may usually start with "Once upon a time...", but as we grow older, we learn that every story doesn't always need a "Happily ever after" to be a good one.(1)Why do young children like fairy tales?A: Because it is their parents that tell them.B: Because tales involve love and wonder.C: Because children are affected by them.D: Because tales will become life lessons.(2)What can we infer from Paragraph 2?A: Fairy tales just tell us the wonderful side of the reality.B: The tales about love and loss can attract more children.C: Fairy tales exist forever because of their simplest style.D: Different from kidsadults read tales from other angles.(3)What's the purpose of the example in Paragraph 3 mentioned by the author?A: To remind that parents should tell the fairy tales from the perspective of children.B: To support the idea that adults are likely to associate the fairy tales with the reality.C: To tell us the danger of the fairy tales if they are told from the perspective of adults.D: To correct the impression that the queen is evil.(4)What's the author's attitude toward such fairy tales?A: Objective.B: Critical.C: Disagreeable.D: Indifferent.【答案】BDBA【解答】(1)B 推理判断题。

It might look like a space hopper(太空弹跳球)surrounded by model helicopters, but the E-Volo is an entirely new kind of helicopter—which can remain still in the air without input from the pilot. Its bold engineer, Thomas Senkel, took the machine on its first manned flight this week—lasting 1 minute and 30 seconds. It's not the first electric helicopter flight, but this is a new kind of machine, controlled simply by a joystick(操纵杆), with the pilot sitting above the rotors(旋转器). Senkel said it could revolutionize transport. It's far easier to fly than ordinary helicopters—it's operated by rotor speed, which is computer-controlled, so the pilot just needs to use a joystick as if playing a videogame, rather than controlling multiple complex controls at the same time. The machine has only a few parts, which could be taken apart, meaning the aircraft needs little maintenance. It has no complicated mechanics and unnecessary engines. In an emergency, it can land even if four of its 16 rotors fail. And since the propellers(螺旋桨)sit below the pilot, a safety parachute can also be arranged. The controls could be integrated with GPS software, and the machine could even automatically avoid obstacles and direct itself to predetermined locations.Senkel described the easy-to-use machine as "good-natured" and capable of replacing the helicopter in many situations. The three inventors claimed their flying machine could be used for inspecting pipelines, as an air ambulance, for taking aerial photographs as well as just for fun. The helicopter is currently only able to fly for around 20 minutes because it runs on lithium-ion(锂离子)batteries.(1)What can we know about the E-Volo?A: It is the first electric helicopter.B: It has made several manned flights.C: It can stay in the air.D: It needs no pilot.(2)Why did Senkel think the new machine could cause a revolution in transport?A: It is easily controlled.B: It needs little power.C: It can be used for various purposes.D: It needs little maintenance.(3)How does the pilot operate the helicopter?A: By talking to the machine.B: By using his mind.C: By moving his feet.D: By using a joystick.(4)What would be the best title of the text?A: New Ways to Play VideogamesB: E-Voloa New Kind of HelicopterC: The Quickest Means of TransportationD: New Findings on How to Fly a Plane【答案】CADB【解答】(1)C 细节理解题。

I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court. After the accident , my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day . But the next day , he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done . I was astonished . He had good reason to charge me , he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury , I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer .Now that he had helped me find a good doctor , it was only fair that I should pay him .But every time I went to see the doctor , I had to wait about 50 minutes . He would see two or three patients at the same time ,and often stop treating one so as to see another . Yet he charged me $115 each time . The final examination report consisted of ten lines , and it cost me $215. My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met . But after that he avoided seeing me at all . He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident , yet he hardly did anything . He simply waited to collect his money . He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him . And he made me pay him $770.Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance company the date I was leaving America .
