A Review of The Processional
I have watched The processional several years ago, but its details are still in my mind. A good movie is worth watching again and again, so I watched it again days ago. This time I got more things from it.
The director of The processional is Luc Besson, a French film director, writer, and producer. He has made many thrillers and action films that are visually rich. Besson had been nominated for Best Director and Best Picture César Awards for his films Léon: The Professional and The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. He won Best Director and Best French Director for his film The Fifth Element(1997). His Taken 2(2012) is France's biggest export success. As the saying goes, “History repeats itself, the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.” So do Luc Besson’s films. His La Femme Nikita is a sad story which is made in 1992, two years later, he made another film The processional, though it also about proffesional killer, they are totally different. The first reason is that his heroine in this film is a 12 years old girl, it makes every scene special and wonderful.
The processional tolds the story that a 12-year-old girl named Matilda has a misery life. Her father is involved in handling drugs for a crooked cop called Norman Stansfield. One day, Matilda encounters Leon, professional hitman, the little girl is out shopping for Leon when Stansfield kills the rest of her family, and fortunately she takes shelter in Leon's house, Matilda begs Leon to teach her his skills. Soon she has wormed her way into every part of his unusual life. Leon does his best to keep her out of trouble, and a father-daughter bond forms between the two of them. Leon however has little experience of being either a father or a friend, and is also unable to prevent Matilda from pursuing her revenge against Stansfield. When Leon rescued Matilda at the hazard of his own life, thus the film drew to an end because of his death.
In the beginning of this film, we see the scenes of startling violence. The first scene is Leon called to kill a fat man. In this scene, we see a professional killer who is not different from other killers. Leon carries a suitcase, wears a pair of black glasses
with no expressions and feelings. And he is quick on the trigger, he finished his work in the shortest time. The second scene is Matilda’s family are killed by Stansfield, Stansfield’s crutality is in sark contrast with Leon’s kindness. Leon realise d that a killer should not have love and sympathy, so the first night he decided to kill the girl, but rember his rule: No woman, no kids. Maybe this is the main reason that he did not kill Matilda.
Leon (Jean Reno) is a professional hit-man in New York City. He is the best in town and in such a big city, there is a lot of work for him. The opening job is phenomenal and really sets the tone for the movie. Reno is very intimidating as the skilled assassin. But how a man who never thinks twice about killing a man could show some tenderness? Leon’s life was used to very simple and boring: killin g people, buying two bottles of milk, doing exercises, watering his plants, sometimes he will go to see Gene Kelly’s Good Weather. Though it is boring, his life is very regular. After Matilda entered his life, his life has a great change. The movie shows L eon’s life with Matilda, it is not the life of a Provisional killer. The most interesting scene is Matilda paly game with Leon in their room. Matilda played different roles but Leon did not know any of those stars, we can know that Leon know little about the country he lives, little people know him and he knows little people because a processional killer is a tool of killing, they do not need’t know more things. He agreed to play the game with Matilda,it means that he started to accept this world. At the end of the movie, Leon killed Beacons field who killed Matilda’s family but at the same time in order to save Matilda, he sacrified his life. Leon’s death is not an accidental event. His boss has warned him that woman is the most terriable thing to killers, Leon has realized this problem. But in Leon’s heart, he has the desire to love and live normally. We love Leon’s kindness, but he died because of his kindness. It is a tragedy.
Matilda is the most important role in this movie, she changed Leon’s life, also changed her own life. In her family, she is be badly treated by everyone except his little brother, so that’s why she only wants to revenge for his brother. The first time Leon met Matilda, Matilda was beat by his father, she sat outside of her house and smoke. She asked Leon a question: “Is life always like this or just because I am a kid?” Leon said: “Always.” We can see that though she is young, she suffer a lot, and in her deep heart, she want a kind of happy life. In many scenes, this twelve-year-old girl show her courage and wit. For example, when she came back home, she saw all
her family died, she fought back a cry, and she asked Leon for help instead of entering into her house.
No one can ignore the plant of Leon because it appear in this movie many times, it just like a sign of Leon. Leon will take it wherever he goes. The plant is Leon’s best friend, he waters every day. He said that he liked it because it kept silent all the time, what’s more, it has no roots, it can lead a wandering life.” It’s a description of his own life. To him, the plant is a kind of wordless company, because of it, he will feel less loney. When Matilda occured, it is Matilda insteag of Leon waters the plant, this kind of change declares that Leon has a new company and Matilda takes cares of all things that Leon loves. Matilda once said: “If you love it, you should plant it in the ground. Leon said nothing but I guess that its also his wish. He wants to have a root insted of a wandering life. Finally, Leon died, Matilda with Leon’s plant went to orphanage, and Matilda planted it in the ground and said: “It is our home.” Matilda found a root for Leon, that’s the end.
Luc Besson directs with purpose and manages to create real suspense and tension, while supplying his viewers with enjoyable characters that are infinitely more likable than those in his flawed French thriller "La Femme Nikita". "The Professional" is never inspirational nor groundbreaking, but it is definitely entertaining.
The movie's main and most obvious theme is revenge, yet while this remains the driving force of the narrative, Besson does not allow proceedings to become too one-directional as he offers up other topics of interest such as people's need to be needed and a child's need for a sturdy father figure.
Movies about hit men are usually full of a lot of action, not intense and dazzling but just shoot em' up and pull the trigger. There is usually a dark history or a past that catches up with them. Thankfully there are movies that make hit men films fun to watch. Thankfully there is Leon.
The Profission is an incredible experience and a great movie to watch in any time. It has action, drama, and comedy. It's not a big blockbuster action film or a depressing drama or a laugh out loud riot. Leon is a key piece to any movie lover's collection. But this movie isn't for everyone. Like Leon says, "No women, no children."
The film's direction is often beautiful, and it complements the story perfectly,
meaning that the tear-jerking scenes, action scenes, and everything else are all the more potent. Although the action is brilliant, it is the scenes between Leon and Mathilda which make the film so good. We watch them grow together, learning off one an another, and they learn that life does not have to be spent on your own. There are many funny parts, most involving the fact that Leon has been outside of society most of his life.。
