Qi Baishi (1863—1957), one of China's greatest painters, followed the traditional Chinese style of painting. ②Chinese painting is known for its brush drawing in black inks and natural colours.Qi Baishi observed the world of nature very carefully, and his paintings are special because of this.

Xu Beihong (1895—1953) was one of China's bestknown twentiethcentury artists. Like Qi Baishi, Xu painted in the traditional Chinese style. Both painters have a beautiful brush line. Xu Beihong believed that artists should show reality, but not just imitate it. Instead, a picture should try to show the “life” of its subject. He is most famous for his lively paintings of horses.

Da Vinci used a technique known as Sfumato (渲染层 次) — the blurring (使模糊不清) of sharp edges by mixing colours — to leave the corners of the eyes and the mouth in shadow. It is this technique that makes the Mona Lisa's expression that can be understood in more than one way. Today, the Mona Lisa looks rather sad, in dull shades of brown and yellow. This is due to a layer of varnish (清漆) covering the paint, which has yellowed over the years. It is possible that the painting was once brighter and more colourful than it is now.
The painting, a halflength portrait, depicts a woman with an expression often described as mysterious. Who is this familiar figure? Many suggestions have been made, but the most likely one is Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine silk merchant. Another more unlikely — but popular — theory is that the painting was a selfportrait. There are certainly similarities between the facial features of the Mona Lisa and of the artist's selfportrait painted many years later. Could this be why Da Vinci gave the subject such a mysterious smile?

The Last Supper
What do you expect to read in this passage?
Painting
Read the passage and get the main idea.
The passage mainly talks about four painting styles, namely the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Impressionism and Modern Art.
Impression, Sunrise by Monet
The third painting is Impression, Sunrise from Monet. It belongs to Impressionism. In the late 19th century, Europe changed from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Some painters from Paris, called Impressionists, began to work outdoors to show how light and shadow fell on objects at different times of a day. They had to paint quickly so their paintings were not accepted because they thought the paintings were ridiculous and not detailed.
Guernica by Pablo Picasso
The fourth painting is called Guernica by Pablo Picasso. It belongs to Modern Art. It depicted the hopelessness and cruelty of wars. There are scores of Modern Art styles. Paintings of this period are called pure art and they show some abstract ideas and thoughts. Some are abstract as the painters only concentrate on certain qualities of objects, using color, shape and line to represent them. Some paintings are so realistic that they look like photographs.
