COLOR WORDS
COLOR WORDS1. Introduction:Among English words terms of color make up a group of words that are parti cularly rich in cultural associations. This means that they can be used either lit erally to refer to different colors or metaphorically to convey their associative meanings in different languages and cultures. The conceptual meanings conveye d by the terms of color are roughly the same in English and their equivalents in Chinese. But the same terms of color in these two languages may have diff erent cultural association. It is natural that English terms of color may have cu ltural association that is not transparent to Chinese learners of English as a for eign language. Color words are frequently used both in Chinese and English.A lot of color words are produced under special historical and geographical ba ckground. If we do not understand these color words, their social custom and cultural background, it would be hard for us to communicate with each other. It is very important for us to grasp the difference between the literal meaning and associative meaning. Further, it is practically useful to know and study the differences, thus promoting the cultural communication and translation practice. This article focuses on discussing the similarities and differences of color wor ds in different cultural fields to help people to have a better understanding of different cultures.2. The similarities and differences of color words between Engli sh and Chinese:The nature is colorful, and so many words can be used to describe it. Genera lly speaking, black symbolizes oppression, white shows purity and innocence, g reen brings vital force. However, the same color may have the different meani ng because of the different history and culture. And after careful study of colo r words, it is easy to find that color words can produce various associations, which have a great effect on a person’s moods and behaviors. That is the mai n reason that people use color words to explain their moral character, mood a nd opinions to things. In different countries, words of cultural connotation are different. Cultural connotation means vocabulary is endowed with the meaning of metaphor, association, symbol and so on. Although color words of different languages have the same conceptual meaning, their connotative meanings are different. Different cultural background and ways of thinking result in the diffe rent connotation of color words and they have a great effect on the cultural co nnotations of words. The association of acceptation and cultural image are cult ural information gap. This gap influences people to understand the meaning of the same word. For example, black symbolizes melancholy and awfulness in s ome English-speaking countries. So, people in those countries are often in black when they attend a funeral or some important social gatherings. But, to Chin ese people, we use white to show a grief to a death. In a word, when one ki nds of color has different meanings in different cultures, we can’t say which k ind of linguistic expression is more reasonable, more exact and better to use. 2.1 Similarities of color words Color words are frequ Chinese and English. Though I have mentioned lots of different meanings of color entirely used bo th in words above, I still try to find that some color words can be used to ex press the same conception. Due to the commonness of the language, some colo r words may have the same meaning in two specific cultures. For example:2.1.1 RedRed symbolizes happiness, pleasure, blessedness and blessing both in China an d the English-speaking countries. So there are lots of similarities in using it. It often connects with success and importance. The phrase “give somebody a re d carpet of reception” means make a warm welcome to some important person. When the Spring Festival is coming, Chinese often put the red couplets on d oors and windows. Red also means that someone is healthy and sanguine both in China and the English-speaking countries. For example: a fine old gentlem an, with a face as red as a rose. This sentence means that the old gentleman i s very healthy and sanguine. Red is often used to show some emotions in Eng lish. For example, become red-faced, turn red, and see red. The phrase “become red with anger/shame” is the same as the phrase “脸红” in Chinese.2.1.2 BlackBlack is not a good word both in Chinese and in English-speaking count ries. It is often used to express one’s anger or some evil things. When black i s plus with a noun, it often means bad things and something without any hop e, as in black market(黑市), a black heart(黑心), black money(黑钱), black gua rd(恶棍), a black sheep(害群之马), and black eye(丢脸),etc. All these new phr ases can be directly translated into Chinese.2.1.3 GreenBoth green light in English and “绿灯”in Chinese are associated with autho ritative permission to go ahead with some project. Apparently, they are derived form traffic regulations.2.2 Differences of color wordsA lot of color words are produced under special historical and geographical ba ckground, most of which are called “culture limited word”. If we don’t underst and these words and the social custom, culture background of it, it is even har der for us to communicate with each other. Therefore, it is of great importance to grasp the difference between the literal meaning and associative meaning.2.2.1 The meaning gapThe color words can make up a group of words, and these new words are par ticularly rich in cultural associations. So, color words in English and in Chines e may have the same and different associations. It is natural that English terms of color may have cultural associations that are not transparent to Chinese le arners of English as a foreign language. In other words, although some color words stand for abounding connotations in English, but there are few connotati ons in Chinese. Therefore, these color words will become the barrier of unders tanding the cultural connotation. According to these associations, we still can fi nd some extended usage of color words. For example:(i) RedRed is not always associated with something joyful. In English the red light di strict refers to a district within a town or city where there are brothels, as in she spent the past 30 years helping the prostitutes in the red light district-and the elderly. Furthermore, in English-speaking countries red can stands for somet hing special. It is seldom used in our daily life. It can stand for violence and some special terrorist groups, as in the following two sentences:(1) This is a union organized by Reds;(2) Her husband was killed in a red battle. In China, we cannot find these kin ds of usage of red. To Chinese people, red is a lucky color. So, the extended usage of red is always full of commendatory senses.(ii) PinkPink can be associated with something best, as in “They kept their house in t he pink of repair or in the pink of health”. The former means “they kept their house in the best condition” and the latter “in one’s best health”. Pink is als o associated with women. Pink-collar employees (nurse, secretaries, etc.) are e mployees in traditionally held by women. But in Chinese, pink just is a color word, having no deep meaning.(iii) PurplePurple is often associated with high rank or station in general or imperial or r egal rank or power in particular. The purple refers to royal or very noble rank, as in “Those born to the purple (those who are from royal or very noble fa milies) are destined to live in the public eye”. A purple passage or a purple p atch refers to an extremely, or too, ornate portion in a literary work, music, p ainting, architecture, etc., as in If he had confined himself to the dialogue and action and cut out the purple … he may have found a publisher for his nove l. Also in Chinese, purple is just a color word.2.2.2 Color words and associative meaning “According to Geoffrey Leech, ‘meaning’ in the wide sense may embrace1.conceptual meaning (sense);2.connotative meaning;3.social meaning;4.affective meaning;5.refleted meaning;6.collecative meaning;7.thematic meaning."[1]P801 A truly ideal translation would be expected to translate the communica tive value of a text into another language. “For students of a foreign language,it is essential that they know not only the conceptual meaning of words, but also their associative meaning, which is, generally, peripheral in lexical meanin g, though.” [2]P63 (i) Different connotative meanings “Connotative meaning is the communicative value an expression has in addition to the purely conceptual meaning. Connotations of words vary from culture to culture. If they are igno red, serious misunderstandings can occur in cross-cultural communication. The connotations of a great many English words are different from those of their tr anslation equivalents in Chi nese.” [3]P35 Some of these English words will be discussed in the following paragraphs. In the Qing dynasty, the book that was authorized by the emperor is called “red book”. It is different from the “red book” in English-spoken country, which means the book with red cover. In chi na during the culture revolution, every one should keep one or two books abo ut Chairman Mao. It was also called “red treasured book”. As same as in Eng lish countries, such words related with history and geography has its proper m eaning, such as red lining, red coat and red brigade. The America financial ins titution encloses the poor area with red line and refuses to provide loan to this area, which made the area poorer. This was called red lining. During the Am erica civil war, the British soldiers wore scarlet service uniform. They were cal led redcoat. Red brigade is an Italian terror organization. White in Chinese me ans bereavements. People who lost relatives use white paper, wear white clothe s and white caps. While in English, white means immaculacy. Such as a white spirit, white day and so on. There are other fixed phrases about white. Such as the following phrases: white elephant (albatross), white collar, white-smith (s ilversmith), white slave, white coal, white gourd (Chinese watermelon), white l ady (hand tailor cocktail), the whites (egg white), white thorn, show the white feather, white coffee, white nights (sleepless night), white man (trusty man) et c.(ii) Different affective meanings “Affective meaning is communicated when the feeling or attitudes are expressed in language. In interpersonal communication it is important to understand the emotional and attitudinal meaning the speaker is conveying. In each language there are a small number of words primarily used to express t he speaker’s emotions or attitudes.” [4]P36 Various colors exp ress different feelings. Generally speaking, red is used when a person is angry while green is used when someone is jealous. White means frightening, blue means a person is in a sulk and yellow means cowardice. Although both two languages use color words to figure other people or things, the same color me ans differently between two languages. We all know that blue is the color of sea. It indicates peace and serenity. But when it turns to the emotion, it has t he meaning of depression and melancholy. For example:It was blue (boring) Monday and john nodded sleepily over his books. You get a chance like this in a blue moon (vary rare). He is a person who is always a blue nose (put on air). Blue also means indelicacy in English, such as blue film, blue talk etc. Color words can produce various associationsof ideas, which make a great affection on person’s mood. That is why people use color to explain a person’s moral character, mood and his opinio n to things. We can see many metaphors when we use color words to describe a person’s moods and behaviors. For example, He was looking rather green (feel not good) the other day. He has been feeling blue (gloomy) today. I hope he’ll soon be in the pink (pu ll himself together) again. When I saw him, he was in a brown mood (worried). It is of great importance for us to understand these metaphors. There is a typical example: Mr. White is a very white (loyal) man. He was looking rather green (feel not good) the other day. He has been feeling blue (gloomy) today. When I saw him, he was in a brown mood (worried). I hope he’ll soon be in the pink (pull himself together) again. (iii) Different reflected meanings “Reflected meaning arises in words of multiple conceptual meaning, when one sense of a word forms part of our response to another sense. Many English compounds and their equivalents in Chinese are formed differently, revealing the fact that English and Chinese speakers may view the same thing in different wa ys.” [5]P36 Different color words stand for the same cultural connotation, which means that we use different words to express the similar meaning. Although color words used are different in these two countries, their cultural connotations are similar. In other words, as the cultural differences exit, we also can use different colors to express the same conception. White, Generally speaking, it is a word of purity. It symbolizes lots of beautiful things. However, people use white very often in a funeral in Chinese culture, while in America they use black. Besides this, white has lots of derogatory senses. These words are used to symbolize some evil people and something bad. There are also many different color words express same meaning. For example,黄色电影——blue films红茶——black tea红眼病——the green eye/green eyed红糖——brown sugar黑面包——brown bread青一块紫一块——black and blueThese examples prove that different color words can stand for the same connotation. Different cultural connotations result in different expressions.3. ConclusionIn short, having studied so much in color words, we can see the influence of social culture on color words is deep-rooted. Every kind of colors has different associations and different culture characters in different nations. And their different meanings make our life more colorful. After all, every nation shows its own culture and value in different way. It is indeed one of the most important fields of human’s recognition of the world. Therefore, the more we know about the color words, the better we understand the foreign culture. It has significant importance for us to comprehend and grasp the color words in both English and Chinese. If translation should be done in an adequate manner, it would put Chinese culture in a position of carrying on equaldialogues with Western culture. Hence the function of translation in our era cannot be replaced by any other means of communication.。
英语写作_the connotation of color words between Chinese and English
the connotation of color words between Chinese and English Color is a kind of visual effect. Men have the same perception of the colorful world for we have the same physiological system. For example, both Chinese and English think that banana is yellow. However, color words not only can be used to describe our gorgeous nature, but also have rich associative meanings and show different values and aesthetic standards. This article analyses the cultural differences between English and Chinese from history and tradition, national psychology, religious beliefs, habits and customs, personal emotion. Then it will point out the similarities and differences between English and Chinese color words caused by cultural differences. To avoid communicative barriers in the international communication, finally this paper will discuss how to deal with these differences, which is very important for language learners.Human society cannot exist without culture. Culture has strong national characters, which means that culture in different countries and regions presents different forms. Born in different cultural background, English and Chinese languages are different, too. As one part of language, color words also have some distinctive differences for the effect of cultural variety. Therefore, cultural difference is one of the biggest problems in the international communication. Trying to find it out and understanding it is necessary. In china, "red" stands for "good luck and happiness", "festive", etc. In ancient times, when people got married, the bride always dressed in red and wore red veil. The bridegroom always tied a red ribbon and wore a red flower in the front. They also posted red on the windows and door of their bridal chamber. When they had a baby, they would give relatives and friends eggs, which colored red. Some custom is still used today. In China "red" also symbolizes "revolution and progress", for example, the initial regime of Communist Party of China is called "red regime", the initial arms are named "the Red Army".However, in western countries, "red" is usually related to "danger", "war", "blood" and "violence". This is probably because European ancestors are nomads and "red" always make them think of life and slaughtering cattle. So when the traffic lights turn red, it means danger and people should stop; "see the red light" indicates being faced with disaster; "red light district" implies whorehouse. Therefore, because of the different historical tradition, Chinese and western attitude of treating color may differ greatly.Well-known "white elephant" in English means "useless and cumbersome gifts", "something expensive but burdensome", "heavy burden". This special social and cultural significance stems from a relevant historical event. Hundreds of years ago, white elephants were rare and sacred in Siam(today's Thailand, with lots of elephants), and nobody could ride or use white elephant except the king. If one captured a white elephant, he had to give it to the king; in other words, white elephant belongs to theking from the minute it was born. According to legend, sometimes if the king was dissatisfied with some liegeman, he might give the liegeman a white elephant to punish him. White elephant could cost a lot but people dare not use it to make money, finally it would become huge burden and heavy load, even make the master break the bank. For this reason, "white elephant" has a figurative meaning of "useless and cumbersome gifts", "heavy burden".People often connect black with “evil” and “band”, for example, in English, black money means dirty money (referring to the money from an improper source and paying no tax to the government); black market (meaning the foreign exchange transactions in that the commodities on selling are what government banned, or market s that engage in illegal and speculative transactions); thus, the phrase “the black market price” is derived. In Chinese, black store (referring to the hotel where the murder and robbery could happen); black den (a place where someone did something illegal to hide). In different social environments of China and western countries, and under the specific historical conditions, “black” in general is relevant with the “black people” in English, while in Chinese “black” is usually linked with politically reactio nary actions or gangs. For example, “black power” refers to human rights movement of the black. “Black Panthers”, a Party, which was founded in the 1860s and obtained the support of the legal authority and gained the black community’s superior treatment.I n English, to begin with, “blue” means “sadness, depression or in a bad mood” and has a closer meaning to “depressed”. For example, if someone is in a blue mood, it means he/she is depressed; and “the blues” means “frustration”.In the following, “blue” in dicates a high social status and a symbol of power, or having a noble or royal birth. For example, if we say, “he’s a real blue bold, which means that he was born in a noble family.” “blue-eyed boys”, workers who are loved and often obtain special care of the management staff. “blue button” means the brokers who have the right to enter the stock transaction market. The above analysis shows that in the course of learning, translation and language communication, the understanding of words should be placed in a profound cultural background of being, otherwise, for words we can only remain at a superficial understanding of the meaning referred to above, and sometimes even misunderstanding or making mistakes. To make it clear what the cultural information and cul tural content is can help to enhance people’s communication skill, a more comprehensive, more accurate and deeper understanding of the meaning of the words, to avoid unnecessary conflict of cultures.Analysis of the cultural connotation of words can also make it possible for us from a new angle to examine the culture, language and society that may exist between the necessary connections, examine the cultural differences between different ethnic, cultural commonalities, and national-specifically cultural traditions. In trans-cultural communication, color words are used as a symbol system. In both Chinese and English languages, color words have different purposes, cultural value and cultural connotation. Only when we truly understand the usages in the native language of thecountry, the cultural traditions, values and customs, can we grasp the significance of color words and make effective trans-cultural communication.。
