下面就给同学们详细的来解析一下这篇文章。

The Greatest of Victorian EngineersIn the hundred years up to 1860, the work of a small group of construction engineers carried forward the enormous social and economic change that we associate with the Industrial Revolution in Britain. The most important of these engineers was Isambard Kingdom Brunel, whose work in shipping, bridge-building, and railway construction, to name just three fields, both challenged and motivated his colleagues. He was the driving force behind a number of the hugely ambitious projects, some of which resulted in works which are still in use today. The son of an engineer, Brunel apprenticed with his father at an early age on the building of the Thames Tunnel. At the age of just twenty, he became engineer in charge of the project. This impressive plan to bore under the Thames twice suffered two major disasters when the river broke through into the tunnel when the second breach(决口) occurred in 1872, Brunel was seriously injured during rescue operation and further work was halted. While recovering from his injuries, Brunel entered a design competition for a new bridge over the Avon Gorge near Clifton. The original judge of the competition was Thomas Telford, a leading civil engineer of his day, who rejected all entries to the competition in favor of his own design. After considerable scandal, a second contest was held and Brunel’s design was accepted. For reasons of funding, however, exacerbated(加剧) by social unrest in Bristol, the project was abandoned in 1843 with only the towers completed. After Brunel’s death, it was decided to begin work on it again, partly so that the bridge could form a fitting memorial to the great engineer. The entire structure was finally completed in 1864. Today, the well-known Clifton Suspension Bridge is a symbol of Bristol, just as the Opera House is of Sydney. Originally intended only for horse-drawn traffic, the bridge now bears over four million motor vehicles a year.16. Brunel was an important airplane engineer in Britain during the Industrial Revolution.A. RightB. WrongC.

Why Buy Shade-Grown Coffee? When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they're usually thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it food for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure? Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too. Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the canopy ( 树冠 ) of taller indigenous (⼟⽣⼟长的) trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full-sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren't any trees. With increased production come increased profits. Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases local-wildlife habitat. Native birds nest and hide from predators (捕⾷者) in the tall trees and migrating birds rest there. Furthermore, in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers and pesticides are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat coffee plant, but then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die. The chemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink. Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as "shade grown" and"bird friendly". Sure, these varieties might costa little more. But we're paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet. I think it's worth it. 31. What is the main idea of this passage? A. Farmers are changing the way they grow coffee. B. Coffee is becoming more expensive to produce. C. Shade-grown coffee is more expensive than sun-grown coffee. D. People should buy shade-grown coffee. 32. The function of the word "Traditionally" in Paragraph 2 is to show __________. A. the positive effects of coffee B. a change of coffee growth C. something that is the most important D. how coffee production used to be 33. What does increased production of full-sun coffee bring about? A. more insects B. better quality coffee C. larger farms D. higher profits 34. How do farmers find more land for growing full-sun coffee? A. They buy more land from other farmers. B. They cut down trees. C. They move to another country. D. They turn grassland into farmland. 35. The full-sun method may affect the following EXCEPT __________. A. insects B. air 第⼆篇 Soot (煤烟灰) and Snow: a Hot Combination New research from NASA scientists suggests emissions of black soot alter the way sunlight reflects off snow. According to a computer simulation, black soot may be responsible for 25 percent of observed global warming over the past century. Soot in the higher latitudes (纬度) of the Earth, where ice is more common, absorbs more of the sun's energy and warmth than an icy, white background. Dark-colored black carbon, or soot, absorbs sunlight, while lighter colored ice reflects sunlight. Soot in areas with snow and ice may play an important role in climate change. Also, if snow and ice covered areas begin melting, the warming effect increases, as the soot becomes more concentrated on the snow surface. "This provides a positive feedback, as glaciers and ice sheets melt, they tend to get even dirtier," said Dr. James Hansen, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, New York. Hansen found soot's effect on snow albedo (反照率), which may be contributing to trends toward early springs in the Northern Hemisphere, such as thinning Arctic sea ice and melting glaciers permafi:ost. Soot also is believed to play a role in changes in the atmosphere above the oceans and land. "Black carbon reduces the amount of energy reflected by snow back into space, thus heating the snow surface more than if there were no black carbon," Hansen said. Soot's increased absorption of solar energy is especially effective in warming the world's climate. "This forcing is unusually effective, causing twice as much global warming as a carbon-dioxide forcing of the same magnitude," Hansen noted. Hansen cautioned, although the role of soot in altering global climate is substantial, it does not alter the fact that greenhouse gases are the primary cause of climate warming during the past century. Such gases are expected to be the largest climate forcing for the rest of the century. The researchers found that observed warming in the Northern Hemisphere was large in the winter and spring at middle and high latitudes. These observations were coherent with the researchers' climate model situations, which showed some of the largest warming effects occurred when there were heavy snow cover and sufficient sunlight. 36. Which of the following statements of soot is NOT true? A. It absorbs sun's heat. B. It is responsible for climate change. C. It reflects sunlight. D. It may account for a quarter of global warming over the past century. 37. Which of the following areas shows a greater warming effect? A. Ice sea areas. B. Areas with black carbon. C. Areas covered with white snow. D. Melting glaciers. 38. "This forcing" in Paragraph 5 refers to __________. A. sun's heating on snow surface B. soot's increased absorption of solar energy C. carbon-dioxide's warming effect D. snow's increased reflection of sunlight 39. What is the main cause of climate warming during the past century? C. Greenhouse gases. D. Wind. 40. The largest warming effects happened in the Northern Hemisphere with __________. A. thinning sea ice and insufficient sunlight B. light snow cover and sufficient sunlight C. heavy snow cover and sufficient sunlight D. thick sea ice and insufficient sunlight 第三篇 A Record-Breaking Rover NASA's Mars rover Opportunity has boldly gone where no rover has gone before-- at least in terms of distance. Since arriving on the Red Planet in 2004, Opportunity has traveled 25.01 miles, more than any other wheeled vehicle has on another world. On July 27, after years of moving about on Martian ground, the golf-cart:sized Opportunity had driven more than 24 miles, beating the previous record holder--a Soviet rover sent to the moon in 1973. "This is so remarkable considering Opportunity was intended to drive about 1 kilometer and was never designed for distance," says John Callas, the Mars Exploration Rover Project Manager. He works at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "But what is really important is not how many miles the rover has racked up, but how much exploration and discovery we have accomplished over that distance." Opportunity The solar-powered Opportunity and its twin rover, Spirit, landed on Mars I0 years ago on a mission expected to last 3 months. The objective of the rovers was to help scientists learn more about the planet and to search for signs of life, such as the possible presence of water. Spirit stopped communicating with Earth in March 2010, a few months after it got stuck in a sand pit. But Opportunity has continued to collect and analyze Martian soil and rocks. During its mission, Opportunity has captured, and sent back to Earth, some 187,000 panoramic and microscopic images of Mars with its cameras. It has also provided scientists with data on the planet's atmosphere, soil, rocks, and terrain. Marathon Rover The rover doesn't seem to be ready to stop just yet. If Opportunity can continue on, it will reach another major investigation site when its odometer hits 26.2 miles. Scientists call this site Marathon Valley, because when the rover reaches the area, it will have traveled the same distance as the length of a marathon since its arrival on Mars. Researchers believe that clay minerals exposed near Marathon Valley could hold clues to Mars's ancient environment. Opportunity's continuing travels will also help researchers as they plan for an eventual human mission to the Red Planet. 41. Opportunity is a record-breaking rover in the sense of __________. A. how long it has stayed in space B. how far it has traveled C. how much investment it has involved D. how many facilities it has been equipped with 42. What does John Callas say about Opportunity's long distance travel? A. It hasn't met scientists' expectation yet. B. It hasn't been appreciated appropriately. C. It is secondary to what has been discovered. D. It is what scientists have been aiming at. 43. One of the objectives of sending Opportunity and Spirit to Mars is to__________. A. collect soil and send back to Earth B. develop multinational space experiments C. test how well solar-powered rovers work in solar space D. look for the possible presence of life 44. Which of the following statements is TRUE of Opportunity? A. It will come back to Earth soon. B. Another rover will be sent to replace it. C. It is traveling to another important star. D. It will work with other rovers exploring Mars. 45. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that __________. A. experts know how far Opportunity will walk on Mars B. researchers are working on sending many rovers to Mars C. Mars' ancient environment might be explored with the help of Opportunity D. Opportunity is supposed to collect clay minerals from Marathon Valley 2014年真题 第⼀篇 Approaches to Understanding Intelligences It pays to be smart, but we are not all smart in the same way. You may be a talented musician, but you might not be a good reader. Each of us is different. Psychologists disagree about what is intelligence and what are talents or personal abilities. Psychologists have two different views on intelligence. Some believe there is one general intelligence. Others believe there are many different intelligences. Some psychologists say there is one type of intelligence that can be measured with IQ tests. These psychologists support their view with research that concludes that people who do well on one kind of test for mental ability do well on other tests. They do well on tests using words, numbers or pictures. They do well on individual or group tests, and written or oral tests. Those who do poorly on one test, do the same on all tests. Studies of the brain show that there is a biological basis for general intelligence. The brain of intelligent people use less energy during problem solving. The brain waves of people with higher intelligence show a quicker reaction. Some researchers conclude that differences in intelligence result from differences in the speed and effectiveness of information processing by the brain. Howard Gardner, a psychologist at the Harvard School of Education, has four children. He believes that all children are different and shouldn't be tested by one intelligence test. Although Gardner believes general intelligence exists, he doesn't think it tells much about the talents of a person outside of formal schooling. He thinks that the human mind has different intelligences. These intelligences allow us to solve the kinds of problems we are presented with in life. Each of us has different abilities within these intelligences. Gardner believes that the purpose of school should be to encourage development of all of our intelligences. Gardner says that his theory is based on biology. For example, when one .part of the brain is injured, other parts of the brain still work. People who cannot talk because of brain damage can still sing. So, there is not just one intelligence to lose. Gardner has identified 8 different kinds of intelligence: linguistic, mathematical, spatial, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal,body-kinesthetic( ⾝体动觉的), and naturalistic. 31. What is the main idea of this passage? A. How to understand intelligence. B. The importance of intelligence. C. The development of intelligence tests. D. How to become intelligent. 32. Which of the following statements is true concerning general intelligence? A. Most intelligent people do well on some intelligence tests. B. People doing well on one type of intelligence test do well on other tests. C. Intelligent people do not do well on group tests. D. Intelligent people do better on written tests than on oral tests. 33. Gardner believes that A. children have different intelligences B. all children are alike C. children should take one intelligence test D. there is no general intelligence 34. According to Gardner, schools should __________. A. test students' IQs B. train students who do poorly on tests C. focus on finding the most intelligent students D. promote development of all intelligences 35. Gardner thinks that his theory has a __________. A. musical foundation B. biological foundation C. intrapersonal foundation D. linguistic foundation 第⼆篇 Compact Disks。

2016年职称英语考试真题理工类C级考后:阅读理解第4部分:阅读理解(第31——45题,每题3分,共45分)下面有3篇短文,每篇短文后有5道题。

请根据短文内容,为每题确定1个选项。

第一篇Can you hear this? When something creates a sound wave in a room or an auditorium (礼堂)listeners hear the sound wave directly from the source. They also hear the reflections as the sound bounces off the walls, floor, and ceiling . These are called the reflected wave or reverberant (反射的) sound, which can be heard even after the sound is no longer coming from the source .The reverberation time of an auditorium is determined by thevolume or interior size of the auditorium .It is also determined by how well orhow poorly the walls, ceiling, floor, and contents of the room (including thepeople) absorb sound. There is no ideal reverberation time .The full-soundperformance of music such as Wagner operas or Mahler symphonies should have along reverberation time. The light, rapid musical passages of Bach or Mozartneed a reverberation time somewhere between.Acoustic problems often are caused by poor auditorium design .Smooth , curved (弯曲的)reflectingsurfaces create large reflections . Parallel (平行的)walls reflect sound back andforth, creating a rapid ,repetitive pulsing(有节奏的跳动)effect. Large pillars (柱)andcorners can cause acoustic shadows as the sound waves try to pass around theobject . Some of these problems can be solved by using absorbers and relectorsto change the reverberation time of a room .For example , hanging largereflectors , called clouds , over the performers will allow some soundfrequencies to reflect and others to pass yo achieve a pleasing mixture ofsound.1. This Passage is mainly aboutA sound waves and their acoustic effect .B the types of music orchestras playC walls of an auditoriumD the design of an auditorium2.Wagner operas and Mahler symphonies sound fuller in an auditorium withA a short reverberation timeB a long reverberation timeC an intermediate reverberation timeD no reverberation time3. He was the Dance Marathon's operations officer for two years.YvonneFangmeyer, director of the student organization office at the University ofWisconsin, conducted a survey in February of students involved in campusorganizations2. She said the desire for friendship was the most frequentlycited reason for joining. At largeuniversities like Fangmeyer's, which has more than 40,000 students, thestudents first of all want to find a way to "belong in their own corner ofcampus".KatieRowley, a Wisconsin senior, confirms the survey's findings." I wanted tomake the campus feel smaller by joining an organization where I could not onlyget involved on campus but also find a group of friends."All ofthis talk of friendship, however, does not mean thatstudents aren't thinkingabout their resumes. "I think that a lot of people do join to 'fatten uptheir resume'", said Heitner."At the beginning of my college career,I joined a few of these organizations, hoping to get a start in my leadershiproles."Butwithout passion student leaders can have a difficult time trying to weather thestorms that come. For example, in April, several student organizations atWisconsin teamed up3 for an event designed to educate students abouthomelessness and poverty. Student leaders had to face the problem of solvingdisagreements, moving the event because of rainy weather, and dealing with theuniversity's complicated bureaucracy."Outside-ofthe classroom learning really makes a big difference", Fangmeyer said.1. The Theory of EverythingIf Stephen Hawking lives until the year 2017, he will have lived more than 50 years longer than his doctors expected. When he was a college student, doctors discovered that he had a rare disease. This disease causes a gradual disintegration(分解)of the nerve cells in the brain cells that regulate voluntary muscle activity. Death almost always occurs within two or threeyears.Today Stephen Hawking cannot walk or speak. He cannot move his arms or his head. He cannot taste or smell anything. And yet this man is Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, a position held by the famous scientist Isaac Newton in 1669.Hawking is often described as the greatest scientist since Albert Einstein, but to the world outside science, he is also known as the man who made scientific theory understandable. His book, A Brief History of Time, has soldover eight million copies. He says that since he does not have to think about his body or do any ofthe things other men have to worry about, such as washing the car or working in the yard, he can dedicate all of his time to thinking. This puts him in the perfect position to find the answer to the question that he has dedicated his life to. His question is: Is there a complete theory of the universe andeverything in it?Despite his tremendous physical disabilities, he has already made some very important discoveries about the origin of the universe, how the universe holds together, and how it will probably end. He has also been able to explain thesecrets of “black holes” in space. Now he is looking for a set ofrules that everything in our universe must obey. He calls it the Theory ofEverything. They also hear the reflections as the sound bounces off the walls, floor, and ceiling. These are called the reflected wave or reverberant(反射的)sound, which can be heard even after the sound is no longer coming from the source. The reverberation time of an auditorium is determined by the volume or interior size of the auditorium. It is also determined by how well or how poorly the walls, ceiling, floor, and contents of the room (including the people) absorb sound. There is no ideal reverberation time. Because each use of an auditorium calls for different reverberation. Speech needs to be understood clearly: therefore rooms used for talking must have a short reverberation time. The full-sound performance of music such as Wagner operas or Mahler symphonies should have a long reverberation time. The light, rapid musical passages of Bach or Mozart need a reverberation time somewhere between.Acoustic problems often are caused by poor auditorium design. Smooth, curved reflecting surfaces create largereflections. Parallel(平行的)walls reflect sound back and forth, creating a rapid, repetitive pulsing effect. Large pillars(柱)and corners can cause acoustic shadows as the sound waves try to pass around the object. Some of these problems can be solved by using absorbers and reflectors to change the reverberation time of a room. For example, hanging large reflectors, called clouds, over the performers will allow some sound frequencies to reflect and others to pass to achieve a pleasing mixture of sound.41.【题干】This passage is mainly about_____A.sound waves and their effects.B.the types of music orchestras play.C.walls of an auditorium.D.the design of an auditorium.42.【题干】Wagner operas and Mahler symphonies with full-sound effect have_____A.a short reverberation time.B.an intermediate reverberation time.C.no reverberation time.D.a long reverberation time.43.【题干】This passage suggests that a good auditorium should_____A.get rid of all reflections.B.not have absorbers.C.achieve a pleasing mixture of sound.D.have smooth surfaces.44.【题干】Large pillars and corners may_____A.make sound rich and full.B.be cures for sound problems.C.be sources of sound problems.D.function as effectively as clouds.45.【题干】The word "acoustic" in the last paragraph has something to do with_____A.performance.B.sound.C.audience.D.weather.补全短文US Signs Global Tobacco Treaty【美国签订了全球烟草协议】The United States has taken the first step toward approving a global tobacco treaty that promises to help control the deadly effects of tobacco use throughout the world. That's the finding of a new study. Released when things aren't burned completely, this pollution is known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs. The biggest sources of these PAHs: the burning of fossil fuels, wood and trash.Frederica Perera works at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in New York City. She researches how exposure to things in the environment affects children's health. In a new study , she and her team studied the exposure to air pollution of 233 nonsmoking pregnant women in New York City. Because burning tobacco can spew(排放) PAHs into the air and lungs, Perera's team focused on nonsmokers. The researchers wanted to probe(探查) other sources of PAHs, ones that would have been hard for an individual to avoid. The team started by testing the blood of each woman during pregnancy. The reason: Any PAHs in a woman's blood would also be available to the baby in her womb. Nine years later, the researchers investigated signs of attention problems in these children, now age 9. They asked each child's mother a series of questions. These included whether her child had problems doing things that needed sustained(长期的) mental effort, such as homework or games with friends. The scientists also asked if the kids had trouble following instructions or made frequent, careless mistakes. All of these can be symptoms of a disordercalled Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. About one in 10 U.S. children has ADHD.Among the women studied, traffic and home heating were the primary sources of air pollution exposure, Perera and her team suspect. Some of these women had low levels of PAHs in their blood. Others had high levels. Those with high levels were five times as likely to have children who showed attention problems by age 9. The new findings were published November 5 in the journal PLOS ONE.16. Perera and her team chose nonsmoking pregnant women all over AmericaA. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned17. This development could significantly increase computer processing speeds and power in the future.2)The research by the University of Surrey, in collaboration withthe University of Cambridge and the University of Southampton, has found it is possible to change the electronic properties of amorphous chalcogenides, a glass material integral to data technologies such as CDs and DVDs. By using a technique called ion doping, the team of researchers have discovered a material that could use light to bring together different computing functions into one component, leading to all-optical systems.3) Computers currently use electrons to transfer information and process applications. On the other hand, data sources such as the internet rely on optical systems; the transfer of information using light. Optical fibres are used to send information around the world at the speed of light, but these signals then have to be converted to electricalsignal sonce they reach a computer, causing a significant slowdown in processing.4)"The challenge is to find a single material that can effectively use and control light to carry information around a computer. Much like how the web uses light to deliver information, we want to use light to both deliver and process computer data," said project leader, Dr Richard Curry of the University of Surrey.5)"This has eluded researchers for decades, but now we have now shown how a widely used glass can be manipulated to conduct negative electrons, as well as positive charges, creating what are known as'pn-junction' devices. This should enable the material to act as a light source, a light guide and a light detector - something that can carry and interpret optical information. In doing so, this could transform the computers of tomorrow, allowing them to effectively process information at much faster speeds."6) The researchers expect that the results of this research will be integrated into computers within ten years. In the short term, the glass is already being developed and used in next-generation computer memory technology known as CRAM, which may ultimately be integrated with the advances reported.23 Paragraph 2 _____24 Paragraph 3 _____25 Paragraph 4 _____26 Paragraph 5 _____A. Is it food for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure? Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too.Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the canopy(树冠)of taller indigenous(土生土长的)trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full-sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren’t any trees. With increased production come increased profits.Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases local-wildlife habitat. Native birds nest and hide from predators(捕食者)in the tall trees and migrating birds rest there.Furthermore, in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers and pesticides are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat coffee plant, but then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die. Thechemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink.Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as "shade grown" and "bird friendly." Sure, these varieties might cost a little more. But we're paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet. I think it's worth it.31.What is the main idea of this passage?A. Farmers are changing the way they grow coffee.B. Coffee is becoming more expensive to produce.C. Shade-grow coffee is more expensive than sun-grow coffee.D. People should buy shade-grown coffee.32. The function of the word "Traditionally" in Paragraph 2 is to show_____.A. the positive effects of coffee.B. a change of coffee growth.C. something that is the most important.D. how coffee production used to be33.What does increased production of full-sun coffee bring about?A. More insects.B. Better quality coffee.C. Larger farms.D. Higher profits.34.How do farmers find more land for growing full-sun coffee?A. They buy more land from other farmers.B. They cut down trees.C. They move to another country.D. They turn grassland into farmland.35. The full-sun method may affect the following EXCEPT_____ full sunA. insects.B. air.C. birds.D. humansSoot(煤烟灰)and Snow: a Hot CombinationNew research from NASA scientists suggests emissions of black soot after the way sunlight reflects off snow. According to a computer simulation, black soot may be responsible for 25 percent of observed global warming over the past century.Soot in the higher latitudes(维度)of the Earth, where ice is more common, absorbs more of the sun's energy and warmth than an icy, white background. Dark-colored black carbon, or soot, absorbs sunlight, while lighter colored ice reflects sunlight.Soot in areas with snow and ice may play an important role in climate change. Also, if snow and ice covered areas begin melting, the warming effect increase, as the soot becomes more concentrated on the snow surface." This provides a positive feedback, as glaciers and ice sheets melt, they tend to get even dirtier." said Dr. James Hansen, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, New York.Hansen found soot's effect on snow albedo(反照率), which may be contributing to trends toward early springs in the Northern Hemisphere, such as thinning Arctic sea ice and melting glaciers permafrost. Soot also is believed to play a role in changes in the atmosphere above the oceans and land."Black carbon reduces the amount of energy reflected by snow back into space, thus heading the snow surface more than if there were no black carbon, " Hansen said. Soot's increased absorption of solar energy is especially effective in warming the world's climate." This forcing is unusually effective, causing twice as much global warming as a carbon-dioxide forcing of the same magnitude." Hansen noted.Hansen cautioned, although the role of soot in altering global climate is substantial, it does not alter the fact that greenhouse gases are the primary cause of climate warming during the past century. Such gases are expected to bi the largest climate forcing for the rest of the century. The researchers found that observed warming in the Northern Hermisphere was large in the winter and spring at middle and high latitudes. These observations were coherent with the researchers' climate model situations, which showed some of the largest warming effects occurred when there were heavy snow cover and sufficient sunlight.36.Which of the following statements of soot is NOT true?A. It absorbs sun's heat.B. It is responsible for climate change.C. It reflects sunlight.D. It may account for a quarter of global warming over the past century.37. Which of the following areas shows a greater warming effect?A. Ice sea areas.B. Areas with black carbon.C. Areas covered with white snow.D. Melting glaciers.38."This forcing" in Paragraph 5 refers to?A. sun's heating on snow surface.B. soot's increased absorption of solar energy.C. carbon-dioxide's warming effect.D. snow's increased reflection of sunlight.39. What is the main cause of climate warming during the past century?A. Soot.B. Snow.C. Greenhouse gases.D. Wind.40. The largest warming effects happened in the Northern Hemisphere withA. X sea ice and insufficient sunlight.B. light snow cover and sufficient sunlight.C. heavy snow cover and sufficient sunlight.D. thick sea ice and insufficient sunlight.A record-breaking powerA Record-Breaking RoverNASA’s Mars rover Op portunity has boldly gone where no rover has gone before—at least in terms of distance. Since arriving on the Red Planet in 2004, Opportunity has traveled 25.01 miles, more than any other wheeled vehicle has on another world. On July 27, after years of moving about on Martian ground, the golf-cart-sized Opportunity had driven more than 24 miles, beating the previous record holder—a Soviet rover sent to the moon in 1973.“This is so remarkable considering Opportunity was intended to drive about 1 kilomet er and was never designed for distance,” says John Callas, the Mars Exploration Rover Project Manager. He works at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. “But what is really importantly is not how many miles the rover has racked up, but how much exploration and discovery we have accomplished over that distance.”OPPORTUNITYThe solar-powered Opportunity and its twin rover, Spirit, landed on Mars 10 years ago on a mission expected to last 3 months. The objective of the rovers was to help scientists learn more about the planet and to search for signs of life, such as the possible presence of water.Spirit stopped communicating with Earth in March 2010, a few months after it got stuck in a sand pit. But Opportunity has continued to collect and analyze Martian soil and rocks.During its mission, Opportunity has captured, and sent back to Earth, some 187,000 panoramic and microscopic images of Mars with its cameras. It has also provided scientists with data on the planet’s atmosphere, soil, rocks, and terrain.MARATHON ROVERThe rover doesn’t seem to be ready to stop just yet. If Opportunity can continue on, it will reach another major investigation site when its odometer hits 26.2 miles. Scientists call this site Marathon Valley, because when the rover reaches the area, it will have traveled the same distance as the length of a marathon since its arrival on Mars.Researchers believe that clay minerals exposed near Marathon Valley could hold clues to Mars’s ancient environment1.Opp ortunity’s continuing travels will also help researchers as they plan for an eventual human mission to the Red Planet.41. Opportunity is a record breaking rover in the sense of_____.A. how long is has stayed in spaceB. how far it has traveledC. how much investment it has involvedD. how many facilities it has been equipped with42. What does John Callas say about Opportunity’s long distance travel?A. It hasn’t met scientists’ expectation yetB .It hasn’t been appreciated appropriatelyC .It is secondary to what has been discoveredD .It is what scientists have been aiming at43.One of the objectives of sending Opportunity and Spirit is to_____.A. collect soil and send back to EarthB. develop multinational space explorationC. test how well solar-powered rovers work in outer spaceD. look for the possible presence of life44. Which of the following statements is true of Opportunity?A. It will come back to earth soon.B. Another rover will be sent to replace it.C. It is travelling to XX(看不清,其余选项错误)D. In contrast, there are almost no local or Arab tourists through nearby disi attracts young people from Amman at the weekends.Popular activities in the desert environment include camping under the stars, riding Arab horses, and rock-climbing amongst the massive rock formations. Jebal Rum (Jebalmeans mountain) is 1,574 meters above sea level. ___________47But Jordan is not simply a desert environment-----it also contains the area which is the lowest point to the face of the Earth----the incredible Dead Sea, popular with tourists for swimming. _______48 Once the waters reach the Dead Sea they are landlocked and have nowhere to go, so they evaporate, leaving behind a dense, rich cocktail(混合的) of salts and minerals that supply industry, agriculture and medicine with some of its finest products.
