Lesson 7 New words and expressions
1.I [ai] pron.我
英语中唯一一个字母为一个单词的单词。
其特点是不论在句中的什么位置都要用大写形式。
2.am [m, əm, æm] v.be动词现在时第一人称单数。
英语中谓语动词形式是有人称、时态和数的变化的。
am只有当主语是第一人称“I”,且用于一般现在时的时候才使用。
I am a doctor.我是医生。
3.are [ɑ:] v.be动词现在是复数
英语中谓语动词形式是有人称、时态和数的变化的。
are只有当主语是第一人称复数及第二人称,且是一般现在时的时候才使用。
You are doing your homework, while I am sleeping.

Ⅰ. name的基本词义
⑴[C] the word or words that a person, thing or place is known by名字,名称:
1.What's your name?" "My name's Diane."“你叫什么名字?”“我叫
黛安娜。
”
2.Please write your full (= complete) name and address on the form.
请在表格上填写全名和地址。
3.What's the name of that village in the distance? 远处那座村庄叫什
么名字?
4.We finally agreed on the name Jiefang for our son. 最终我们一致同
意给儿子取名解放。
5.The students were listed by name and by country of origin.学生按
照姓名和国籍登记入册。
6.In the past, the Chinese give young children a milk name——a first
name which they are at liberty to change,later on,for one of their own. 过去,我们中国人给年幼的孩子取个乳名——他们可以自由改动的第一个名字。
以后,又从几个名字中由自己选择一个定下来。
⑵名誉,名声[C 通常作单数形式用usually singular] the opinion or reputation that someone or something has
1.She went to court to clear her name (= prove that the bad things

2.Their actions gave British football a bad name in Europe at that

Ⅱ. 由name构成的习惯用语idioms
⑷by the name of sth被叫作…,名叫…formal,called
I've got to talk to a professor by the name of Song Qiang.我得和一位叫宋强的教授谈谈。
⑸go by the name of sth自称为…, to give yourself a name which is not your real name
In the business world he goes by the name of Fortune.在商界他使用福琼这个假名。
⑹in the name of sb以(某人)的名义;在(某人)名下; also in sb's name for someone or belonging to someone
I've come to collect my tickets - I reserved them by phone yesterday in the name of Ma Yun. 我来取票——昨天我打电话来用马云的名字订的。
The house is in my wife's name.这房子归于我妻子名下。
⑺be a name to conjure with鼎鼎大名;名字会令人产生美妙联想;名声在外be a very important name, or an interesting name which gives you a mental picture of something pleasant or exciting
1.In those days Churchill was still a name to conjure with. 那时丘吉尔
还是一个如雷贯耳的名字。
2.There's a name to conjure with! 这是一个让人浮想联翩的标题!
⑻in all but name实际存在但未获正式认可;只缺正式名分,existing as a fact but not officially described that way
She is vice-president in all but name. 虽然没有正式任命,但事实上她已经是副总裁了。
⑼in God/heaven's name看在上帝的份儿上in the name of
God/heaven,used to add force to something which is said, although some people might find the use of 'God' offensive

⑽in name only只在名义上。
If a situation exists in name only, it is officially described that way, although that description is not true
A large percentage of the population is Catholic, though many are so in name only. 大部分人口都是天主教徒,虽然其中许多是有名无实。
(11)in the name of sth(言行)以…的名义,also in sth's name(said or done) in order to help a particular thing succeed
What is said in the name of freedom. 以自由的名义说的已经够多的了。
(12)in the name of sb/sth代表…;用…的名义also in sb's/sth's namedoing something as a representative of someone or something
1.In old movies the police shouted "Open up in the name of (= by

3.As members of the union, we have the right to know what action

(13)make a name for yourself扬名,成名,to become famous or respected by a lot of people

(14)your name is mud名誉扫地 , other people are angry with you because of something you have said or done
If he doesn't turn up tonight, his name will be mud. 如果他今晚不出现的话,他将声名狼藉。
(15)the name of the game(活动等)最重要的部分,最需要的素质the most important part of an activity, or the quality that you most need for that activity
People say that in politics the name of the game is making the right friends. 人们说在政界最重要的就是交对朋友。
(16)take sb's name in vain (尤指在背后)肆意批评(某人),说(某人)的闲话humorous,to criticize someone or talk about someone without respect, especially when they are not there

(1) what, used to ask for information about people or things 什么

(2) what, used in questions which show you are surprised or do not believe something(用于疑问句中,表示惊奇或不相信)

①what...for?used to ask about the reason for something (用于询问事情的原因)

⑥what's on,used to mean 'what is happening'. This phrase is often used as the title of the part of a newspaper.正在发生的事。
⑦What's up? used to ask someone what the problem is 怎么了?出什么事了?

(4) what语序结构

When what is used in a main clause to ask a question, remember to put the verb before the subject:what用在主句作為疑問詞時,切記要主謂倒置:❌What you are doing this summer?(錯誤的用法)
✔What are you doing this summer?這個夏天你打算做什麼呢?
When what is used in a subordinate clause, do not put the verb before the subject:what用在從句時,無需主謂倒置。
❌I'm writing to ask you what are you doing this summer.(錯誤的用法)✔I m writing to ask you what you are doing this summer.我寫信問問你這個夏天你打算做甚麼。
(5) what 作关系代词
what pronoun,the thing(s) which; that which(作关系代词引导从句)…那样的;…的
①What I wanted to find out first was how long it was going to take. 我首先想要搞清楚的是它要花多长时间。
②What really concerned her was how unhappy the child was. 她真正关心的是那孩子有多么不开心。
③She wouldn't tell me what he said. 她不愿告诉我他说过什么。
④I hadn't got much money on me but I gave them what I had.我身上没带多少钱,但我把带的钱都给他们了。
⑤The letter showed clearly what they were planning.这封信很清楚地说明了他们是在筹划什么。
⑥I can't decide what to do next.我决定不下来下一步该做什么。

6.nationality [ˌnæʃə'næliti] n.国籍
(1) [C or U] the official right to belong to a particular country 国籍
1.She has British nationality.她拥有英国国籍。
2.What nationality are you?你是哪国人?
(2) [C] a group of people of the same race, religion, traditions, etc民族At the International School they have pupils of 38 different nationalities. 这所国际学校里有来自38个不同民族的学生。
7.job [dʒɔb] n.工作
(1) the regular work which a person does to earn money工作;职业;职位
1. a temporary/permanent job 临时的/固定的工作
2.When she left college, she got a job as an editor in a publishing
company.大学毕业后她在一家出版公司当编辑。
3.It's very difficult trying to bring up two children while doing a
full-time job.一边抚育两个孩子一边做全职工作很困难。
4.He's never managed to hold down (= keep) a steady (= permanent)
job.他从来没能保住一份稳定的工作。
5.She's applied for a job with an insurance company.她已向一家保险
公司求职。
6.Are you going to give up your job when you have your baby?你有

(2) COMMON LEARNER ERROR:
job是可數名詞,指一份具體的工作,或某人賴以為生的固定工作。
Job is a countable noun and refers to a particular piece of work or the regular work that someone does to earn money.
She is looking for a new job. 她正在找一份新工作。
当说到某人工作中所做的事情时,不要用‘job’,而要用‘work’。
1.To talk about the activity that someone does in their job, don't say
'job', say work
2.We need to improve the efficiency of our work.我們需要提高工作效
率。
8.keyboard ['ki:bɔ:d] n.电脑键盘
(1)键盘(计算机、打字机等的)the set of keys on a computer or typewriter that you press in order to make it work, or the row of keys on a musical instrument such as a piano
(2)键盘乐器an electronic musical instrument similar to a piano
9.operator ['ɔpəreitə] n.操作人员
(1)operator , operators someone whose job is to use and control a machine or vehicle操作员,业务员;驾驶员
a computer operator计算机操作员
(2) a company that does a particular type of business经营公司;专业公司
a tour operator旅行社
(3)a person who helps to connect people on a telephone system(电话)接线员
(4)smooth/clever, etc. operator: a person who deals with people or problems cleverly, especially for their own advantage圆滑的/精明的人等(尤指善于牟取私利的人)
He has shown himself to be a canny operator in wage negotiations. 他在薪酬谈判过程中表现得精明老练。
10.engineer [ˌendʒi'niə] n.工程师
❶engineer, a person whose job is to design or build machines, engines or electrical equipment, or things such as roads, railways or bridges,using scientific principles 工程师;工程(或机械)设计人员
