第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A ★
My father left me a treasure when he died. It wasn’t a big house or a car. It wasn’t cash or gold. In the eyes of the world my father died a poor man. He was a simple mechanic who worked hard to support his family. My father’s treasure, rather, was in a thousand wonderful memories that he gave me over the course of his life.
One particular one stood out in my mind today. I was just a boy playing in the backyard of a frien d’s house while my fath er spent the afternoon under the hood (引擎盖) of an old car, trying to get it running again. It seemed to take hours and I wasn’t sure whether he could bring the ancient car back to life again this time. At long last, though, he closed the hood and turned the key in the ignition (点火装置). There was a sweet smile of satisfaction on his face as the engine started. There was a twinkle of joy in his eye when he shook his head. And there was a quiet hum of happiness in his voice as we drove back home that day. This memory made a home in my heart
and became a priceless pearl for my soul to cherish.
Time and time again, my father showed me that a kind life, a giving life and a heavenly life was created one choice at a time. Not all of his choices were the right ones, but most of them were. He did the best he could. He lived the best he could. And he helped to bring out the best in me, too. He once said to me, “It is lucky that all of your choices are driven by love and inspired by joy.” As I look back into those memories my father left me, I realize that each one of them inspired me to live and to love. May all of your choices bring memories of happiness to those around you!

What’s the coolest job ever? It may be one that allows you to express your personality while doing
something you love and getting paid for it. Here are some really cool jobs.
◆Cowboy
If you dream of living the rural life as a cowboy, consider a position as a rancher (牧场工人)or a farm manager. You can expect to earn between US$25,000 and US$35,000 a year, says Brady Lynch, an agricultural research consultant. “A lot of benefits will include other things like housing,
a vehicle and even beef or chicken,” he adds.
◆Professional Golfer
You need nerves of steel to face pressure and difficulty and a love of travel to survive as a professional golfer. a year. If you become chief, you could double that salary.

Free flights are the best benefit of fered to flight attendants. Attendants’ salaries start at around US$16,191 a year, according to the Association of Flight Attendants. But the salary goes up as you stay on the job, and the average salary for US flight attendants is US$37,740, according to the BLS. The history of the computer keyboard started way back in 1714, when the first typewriters were manufactured. Then, they looked more like sewing machines, since they were designed by Remington, which also used to manufacture sewing machines. They were not used for commercial purposes but to produce legal documents that were neat. 1868 was the year when Christoper Latham Scholes created the typewriter that is common today and was later mass marketed in 1877. Before the typewriter advanced to become the modern-day keyboard, there were a few developments that led to it. First there was the combination of the typewriter with the telegraph to create a teletype. Key punches were also created by the combination of the typewriter with punch card systems. The teletype was used to input data in the very first computers, and this is where the development of the computer keyboard started.
How the teletype worked with the computer is that a card was inserted into the teletype. The keys would then be pressed in the teletype and a series of holes would be punched in the card. These were known as key punches, which would then be put into a card reader which analyzed the cards
as data. This was in 1946, and in 1948 an electromagnetically (电磁地) controlled teletype was brought into operation for the binary automatic computer (二进制自动计算机).
There later came the video display terminal (视频显示终端) and electronic keyboards. When people typed, they would immediately see the results on the screen. This was in the 1970s, and people accepted the technology because it was user-friendly. There was no long process involved in getting something typed. The very first designs of these keyboards were big and heavy, and most did not come with the computer. This was later modified to a smaller size and different colours and designs, and that is the keyboard we use today.
29. For what purpose were the first typewriters manufactured?
A. To produce legal documents.
B. To replace sewing machines.
C. To record the results of research.
D. To create the first computer keyboards.
30. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the text?
A. In the 1970s keyboards came with the computer.
B. Christoper Latham Scholes created the first typewriter in 1714.
C. An electromagnetically controlled teletype was introduced in 1877.
D. The development of the computer keyboard started from the teletype.
31. The underlined word, “modified”, in the last paragraph, is closest in meaning to “______”.
A. connected
B. changed
C. admitted
D. applied
32. What is the text mainly about?
A. The process of making computer keyboards.
B. The first person who invented the typewriter.
C. The course of development of the computer keyboard.
D. The influence of typewriters on the computer keyboard.

Girls who play with Barbie dolls tend to see fewer career options available to them, compared
with the options available to boys, according to a new study by researchers at Oregon State University and the University of California (UC), Santa Cruz.
The study’s authors, psychology professors, Aurora Sherman of Oregon State University and Eileen Zurbriggen at UC Santa Cruz, describe their findings as significant. “This is one of the first studies to investigate how playing with sexualized (有性别的)dolls affects young girls, and also one of the first to look at the impact of such play on achievement or career aspirations (愿望), rather than body image,” said Zurbriggen. Sherman suggests that Barbie and similar dolls are part of the burden of early and inappropriate sexuality placed on girls.
Sherman and Zurbriggen used girls’ doll play to study the impact of gender role socialization, a process through which children learn to follow cultural norms and which encourages gender stereotypical (约定俗成的) behavior.
Thirty-seven girls from the age of four to seven from an Oregon college town were randomly arranged to play for five minutes with either a sexualized Doctor Barbie or Fashion Barbie doll, or with a more neutral (中性的)Mrs. Potato Head doll. The girls were then shown photographs of ten occupations and asked how many they themselves or boys could do in the future.
The girls who played with a Barbie doll saw themselves in fewer occupations, compared with boys. Those girls who played with Mrs. Potato Head reported nearly as many career options available for themselves as for boys.
The two Barbie dolls were the same except for clothing, with unrealistic bodies, extremely youthful and attractive faces, and long full hair. The researchers believe that the doll itself has more of an effect on girls than the role or career aspirations suggested by its costume.
“It’s significant that a few minutes of play with a Barbie doll had an immediate impact on the number of careers that girls saw as possible for themselves,” Zurbrigge n said.
33. Based on the text, we know that the study __________.
A. involved thirty-seven girls and boys in all
B. was designed for children under four years old
C. gave children ten photos of occupations to choose from
D. required children to play with a Doctor Barbie doll for extra five minutes
34. Which of the following are the factors that affect girls’ career options, according to the text?
①long hair
②young faces
③the dolls’ costumes
④unrealistic bodies
A. ①②③
B. ①②④
C. ②③④
D. ①②③④
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. That Barbie dolls make girls want to be thin.
B. Why Barbie dolls are one of the world’s best-selling dolls.
C. That playing with Barbie dolls could limit girls’ career choices.
D. What negative effects Barbie dolls have on young girls in the long term.
