第三部分:阅读理解(共小题;每小题2分,满分0分)In schools all over the world boys and girls are learning foreign languages. Many grown-ups are doing so in their spare time. Everybody knows his own language, but to know another is very useful.
Which is the best way to learn a language? We should remember we all learnt our own language well when we were children. If we could learn a second language in the same way, it would not seem so difficult. Think of what a small child does. It listens to what people say and tries to imitate(模仿)what it hears. When it wants something, it has to ask for it. It is using the language. It is talking and thinking in it all the time. If one has to use a second language all the time, he would learn it quickly.
It is important to remember, also, that we learn our own language by hearing people speak it not by seeing what they write. We imitate what we hear. In school, though you learn to read and write as well as to hear and speak, it is best to learn all new words through the ear. Of course you also learn to read them, spell them and write them.
There is no easy way to success in language learning. A good memory is a great help, but it is not enough simply to memorize (记住) rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart long
lists of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language. If we are satisfied with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. "Learn through practice" is a good piece of advice for those who are learning a new language. Practice is important as much as we can. We learn to swim by getting into the water and swimming. And we learn to speak English by speaking it and not being told about it.
56. The writer’s main purpose in writing this passage is to tell _________.
A. something about foreign language
B. the beginners how to learn a foreign language
C. the readers how to imitate others
D. something about how to practice listening and speaking
57. People know their native language well only because _________.

B. they learn it by reading and writing
C. they learn it by hearing it and master it by using it
D. they treat it as their own language
58. It would be _________ if we learn a second language in the same way as we learned the first one according to the passage.
A. easy
B. possible
C. difficult
D. A and B
59. Which of the following is true?
A. Only school children are learning foreign language.
B. People know their own language well only after they grow up.
C. That “A good memory is everything” is a piece of good advice for language learning.
D. It is not much use studying the dictionary.

The Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States and Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes which will give them a head in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their children are very skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence. The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills that they need to be confident, happy and clever. Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and lots of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not merely teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, emmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard e,nough to get it.?At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough,. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her.
A year later, I returned to school ?walking on my own!
When the Great Depression (大萧条) hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.
Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed.Fifteen years later, we had the
largest hotel system in the world — Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person's place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he
will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I've found a friend!
67. Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is the most important in choosing a friend?
A. understanding
