第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources, the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. Actually, the past decades has seen more and more forests disappearing and globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable(可持续的)ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.
Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decades. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains.
In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil(棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%.
Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions(排放)and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development.
Finally, governments can avoid the huge expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from traditional model to a sustainable one.
The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of growing population within the limits if this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.
1、The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that_________________
A.It makes the world warmer
B.it consumes natural resources
C.it brings severe damage to forests
D.it makes growth hard to continue
2、What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.China lacks wind and solar energy.
B.China is the leader of the low-carbon market.
C.High-speed trains are a low-carbon development.
D.Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests.
3、To full develop the low-carbon markets, government can_________________.
A.cut public expenses
B.forbid carbon emission
C.develop public resources
D.encourage energy conservation
4、We can learn from the last paragraph that businesses have many chances to_________________.
A.develop sustainable products
B.explore new natural resources
C.make full use of natural resources
D.deal with the major challenge
5、What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a new business model.
B.To compare two business models.
C.To predict a change of the global market.
D.To advocate sustainable development.
22.(8分)It is quite apparent that competition surrounds every aspect of human life whether in the United States or the Amazon rainforest. Without it we would not have grown into primates (灵长类动物) . Or we would probably still be struggling to sharpen a bronze tool while crawling around on four legs in search of meat. Without competition, Columbus wouldn’t have discovered America and Edison would never have invented the light bulb.
Friendship, like all relationships between two people, involves competition. It isn’t competition in a traditional sense because there are no goals to be scored and no prize. Perhaps the ecological definition --- the simultaneous (同时) demand by two or more organisms for limited environmental resources, such as nutrinents, living space, or light --- better explains it.
As in nature, high school life is governed by a set of laws, similar to a shortened version of Darwin’s theory of evolution, overpopulation, and competition. There is an abundance of high school students and to distinguish them, ranking and categorizing (分类) take place. In high school, friendships learn to coexist with competition even though at times the relationship is rough. In fact, in some circumstance, competition is too much of a burden for a friendship to bear, causing it to fall apart. College admission is the final high school objective. Four years of hard work is to achieve good grades, and a student’s fate is determined not only by these achievements, but by the records of t housands of other seniors trying to achieve a similar recognition.
Nevertheless, by necessity, competition between students exists in all aspects of high school life. It sets and improves
the standards in everything from sports to schoolwork. A healthy, friendly competition can have only benefits, but when it becomes too fierce, jealousy (妒忌) can tear friendships apart. Yet, despite all this, without competition, we would be lost.
1、What does the ecological definition mainly explain?
A.How to win the competition. B.What competition exactly is.
C.What the result of competition is. D.How friends compete with each other.
2、According to the writer, what causes the high school students to compete?
A.They know the laws of nature well. B.Friendship is a burden for them.
C.The number of them is too large. D.They are divided into different groups.
3、Which best describes the relationship of friendship and competition?
A.Friendship is always based on competition.
B.Competition is a result of lost friendship.
C.Competition is terribly harmful to friendships.
D.The degree of competition is vital to friendship.
4、What does the author think of “competition”?
A.Competition is certain to happen at school.
B.The result of competition are out of control.
C.Competition becomes fierce in high school.
D.Friendship is not as important as competition at school.
23.(8分)The hemlock(铁杉) trees along the Wappinger Creek, New York, look healthy. However, scientist Gary Lovett says the white balls which provide protection for the bugs are created by a tiny insect. It’s hard to believe the tiny bug could kill a tree. However, trees can end up with millions and millions of the pests. When there are that many, it ends up killing the tree.
The bug from East Asia is slowly killing trees across the USA.The trouble-making bug is just one of many invasive(入侵的) pests that have slipped into the United States. They can hurt other living things in their new home.
Many invasive pests arrive on wooden pallets piled inside shipping containers. They support and separate goods, and keep them from sliding around. Invasive pests often tunnel into the pallets. How can we stop pests from riding on pallets? Lovett says new rules are needed. The companies that make pallets don’t want more rules. Cong ress has added an amendment(修正案) in the 2018 Farm Bill to try and prevent this problem. However, Lovett is not hopeful it will make much of a difference. Pallets are checked by inspectors. Many are sprayed with bug-killing pesticide. “I believe in the system,” said Brent McClendon, president of The National Wooden Pallet and Container Association. He also
said shipping containers are checked very carefully.
Still, each year 13 million containers are shipped to the U.S. Each is full of wooden pallets. Lovett says: “Inspectors can’t possibly check everything. All it takes are a few bad pallets; we should get rid of wooden pallets.” He believes pallets should be made of plastic or eco-composite wood. Eco-composite wood is a mix of wood fiber and plastic. Insects cannot hide into it. One problem is that these choices cost more. They may be worth the extra money, though. Invasive pests cost the U.S. $5 billion a year. Trees don’t just die in forests. They also die in cities and our yards. Then, they need to be replaced. That costs money, too.
1、All the statements are TRUE except that ________.
A.pesticide has been applied to bug-killing
B.invasive pests are native to Wappinger Creek
C.invasive pests hide in pallets used in shipping
D.the companies making pallets do n’t want more rules
2、What can we infer from the passage?
A.Bugs can be easily spotted by eyes.
B.Bugs ruin the shipping goods slowly.
C.Bugs won’t bother the tree if just in few numbers.
D.Bugs cover trees with white soft balls for protection.
3、Why does Gary Lovett want to get rid of wooden pallets?
A.Because insects mostly die in them.
B.Because plastic pallets are eco-friendly.
C.Because they are not worth extra money.
D.Because they are the major pest carriers.
4、What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Invasive pests are harming plants in the USA.
B.Effective measures have stopped the pest invasion.
C.Congress contributes a lot to dealing with invasive pests.
D.Ecosystem in the USA is poorly damaged by invasive woods.
24.(8分)Cyclist Alain Such has been dropped from the Ingotel cycling team for two years after a positive drug test at the Institute of drug Free Sport. “ I was flabbergasted.” Said Didier Garcia, from Team Ingotel. “Alain joined our team last month and we had no idea that he was being exa mined.”
It’s a story that has become more and more familiar in recent years. Dr. Mohammad Farnood, a leading sports
scientist from Cairo, Egypt, said, “ It is thought that some athletes will look for other ways to improve performance in addition to using d rugs.”
However, it has not always been against the law. In the Olympics in 1904, Thomas Hicks won the marathon after using drugs in the middle of the race. In fact, the first one didn’t make him feel better for long, so he was given another and, as a result, he fell down soon after finishing and knew nothing. Another one may well have killed him.
Things are very different today. Some scientists are considering the possibilities of using genetic engineering to further develop athletes’ abilities. “If it works with no risk of discovering,” said Dr Farnood, “ then it’s likely to become common practice for athletes.”
Researchers are looking at the possibility of identifying “athletic” genes and correcting weak ones. Put into practice, this would make a person healthier and stronger. Once scientists understand what genes of top athletes look like , it might even become possible to identify “athletic” genes in young people, and then money could be spent on children who have the most promising genes.
“People are beg inning to recognize that genetics can in many ways do good to our society, for example in saving lives and in creating better quality food for people.” Dr Farnood says. “ So, is it fair to use genetic engineering in sport? You could ask if it’s fair for so me runners to use the latest scientifically developed footwear. The key question is whether it’s available to everyone.”

D.It’s dangerous to use drugs in sport.
25.(10分)Residents in the poorest counties in the U.S. face a life expectancy up to decade shorter than their counterparts in the wealthiest areas, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health.
Researchers from East Tennessee State University wanted to better understand how socioeconomic status was associated with heath outcomes. To find out they divided the co untry’s 3,141 counties into 50 new ‘states’ (with 2 percent of the counties in each) based on household income as opposed to geographic proximity (接近).
The researchers broke down the data by county since they found state-level data may hide some ‘impact of socioeconomic differences on both the best-off and worst-off counties.’ They then examined health data from the wealthiest and poorest ‘states’ (top and bottom 2 percent) to see how residents differed on factors like smoking, clinical care and excessive drinking. Researchers found that there was nearly a 10-year gap in the life expectancy of men with an average of 79.3 years in the wealthy counties compared to 69.8 years in the poorest. For women, the difference was slightly less - 83 years in the wealthiest counties and 76 years in the poorest.
The study authors caution that while they found a connection between socioeconomic status and health outcomes, they did not analyze cause and effect. But they suggest that the data shows how policy makers should not just focus on state-wide initiatives (主动性) but more targeted efforts to help those most at risk. “With limited resources, methods of pinpointing the poorest counties can assist in the allocation of resources and programs to those communities that are in t he greatest need,’’ the study authors wrote.
1、How did Researchers divide the counties?
A.By social status. B.By income.
C.By health. D.By living places.
2、Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3?
A.The women difference is less than the man in life expectancy.
B.The wealthiest ‘state’ like hiding their wealth.
C.Most health data is unbelievable.
D.Most poorest ‘state’ smoke and drink a lot.
3、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The researchers think their study is perfect.
B.People still don’t know the cause of life expectancy.
C.The government should learn something from the study.
D.The American resources allocation is not fair at all.
4、What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Ways to have a long life expectancy
B.Great income differences in the USA
C.The health problem in the USA
D.Men in richest 10 years longer in poorest
