Then the teacher may collect the answers in a whole-class setting, having the students read out the complete sentences.Suggested answers:1 21 million2 103 121 0004 every hour5 200 20002. Activity 2Find word in the box which mean:Show the following on the screen:bronchitis cancer cigarette death die heart disease injured tobacco1 the end of life___________2 stop living______________3 two things some people smoke___________4 three illnesses____________5 hurt____________Read the words and have the students repeat after you. If time permits, ask some pairs to present their discussions.→Step 3 Writing1. Activity1Read this email from a student in the US. Choose the correct subject for the email survey from these three suggestions.Show the following on the screen.1. Public transport2. Smoking3. Things which are against the lawDear Zhou Kai,How are you? We’re doing a class survey and I have to write emails to all my pen friends in other countries. I hope you don’t mind answering these questions.1 Do most adults smoke in China?2 In most states in the US, it is now against the law to smoke in public buildings, such as banks and offices, on public transport and in restaurants and cafes. Is itthe same in China?3 Is the government planning to change the law about smoking in public?Hope you can answer my three questions!Best wishes,PaulAsk the students to read through the email quickly to choose the correct subject for the email. Then collect the answers from the whole class.Suggested answers:2 smoking2. Activity 2Ask the students to read the email carefully and answer questions in the email individually. Ask similar questions to the writer Paul. The students can exchange their work each other. If possible, let some students read out their emails.→Step 4 Summary and HomeworkThe teacher summarizes the knowledge they have learned in this lesson and then gives the students assignment. Ask the students to hand in their emails after class. Module 2 No DrugsPeriod 1Words related to smoking: bronchitis, cancer, cigarette, death, die, heartdisease, injured, tobaccoSmoking活动与探究Encourage the students to think of as many words related to smoking and the dangers it causes. Lead the students to form a good living habit. Background InformationWorld Governments Should Conduct Serious Campaigns against Smoking If you smoke and you still don’t believe that there’s a definite link between smoking and bronchial troubles, heart disease and lung cancer, then you are certainly deceiving yourself. No one will accuse you of hypocrisy. Let us just say that you are suffering from a bad case of wishful thinking. This needn’t make you too uncomfortable because you are in good company. Whenever the subject of smoking and health is raised, the governments of most countries hear no evil, see no evil and smell no evil. You don’t have to look very far to find out why the official reactions to medical findings have been so lukewarm. The answer is simply money. Tobacco is a wonderful commodity to tax. It’s almost like a tax on our daily bread. This is surely the most short-sighted policy you could imagine. While money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on efforts to cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better-off if smoking were banned altogether. For a start, governments could begin by banning all cigarette and tobacco advertising and should then conduct antismoking advertising campaigns of their own. Smoking should be banned in all public places like theatres, cinemas and restaurants. Great efforts should be made to inform young people especially of the dire consequences of taking up the habit. A horrific warning—say, a picture of a death’s head—should be included in every packet of cigarettes that is sold. As individuals we are certainly weak, but if governments acted honestly and courageously, they could protect us from ourselves.。
