21.(6分)Educators across the US are calling for major changes to the admissions process in higher education. The Harvard school of Greduate Education, along with 80 other schools and organizations, released a report called "Turning the Tide Making Caring Common” in January, 2016. The report argues that the process schools use to choose students causes major problems.
David Hawkins is the Executive Director for Educational Content and Policy at the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. Hawkins told Voice of America that most colleges and universities require many things from
students when they apply. Schools usually ask for an essay describing a student's interests or why they want to study at that school. The schools also ask for letters from teachers or other responsible adults describing why a student is a good candidate. But, Hawkins says, the area that schools are most concerned about is a student's high school grades and standardized test results.
The report suggests that paying attention to academic success over other qualities works well for some students but hurts others. In addition, academic success is not the most important quality a student should have. More attention should be paid to showing whether or not a student wants to do well in the world, according to the report.
The report goes on to state that the best way to change the admissions process is by changing college applications. It suggests that schools should ask for evidence that students care about other people. But the report does have its critics. Bob Schaeffer, Public Education Director for the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, said that every few years, someone makes the same argument for changes, but no real change has happed yet. Even many of the schools that agree with the report still make no changes.
Lloyd Thacker, Executive Director of the Education Conservancy, said that until a majority of schools agree to make the changes, there will still be problems. However, he said, the admissions process was better in the past. If bad changes can affect the process, so can good ones.
1、What is the problems of the admissions process according to the report?
A.The schools ask too many things from the applying students.
B.The schools attach too much importance to students’ academic records
C.The number of students getting admitted is too small
D.Admissions officers consider too many unimportant factors
2、What is usually missing in an essay?
A.The reasons to attend the school
B.A description of interests
C.Recommendation letters from adults
D.Evidence that students care about others
3、Bob Schaeffer argues that _________.
A.not all changes are good
B.the largest schools are expected to make changes first
C.no schools currently agree with the report
D.some schools don’t make changes even if they agree
4、What’s Lloyd Thacker’s attitude toward t he possible change in the admissions process?
A.Confident B.Negative
C.Doubtful D.Unclear
22.(8分)I’d have to say that the schemes to reduce staff absence and increase punctuality(准时) have been a big success. We’ve seen that staff attendance levels ha ve increased from 88% to 93%, and levels of punctuality have increased from 79% to 91%, which is fantastic. And the number of days that staff have taken off for sickness has dropped from an average of nine days per year to just five. There has also been a general increase in motivation at work, and we’ve seen output increase by at least 16% since this time last year.
So, what have we been doing to improve things? Well, for a start, we’ve been introducing a scheme so that employees get bonuses if company production targets and sales figures are met. And if things carry on as they are, all employees will have received a bonus by the end of next month. We’ve also introduced a system whereby employees and management set personal targets. Then, the individual employee receives a bonus if these targets are met. And to help with punctuality, we’ve installed a new system that records exactly what time people are getting in and leaving the office. This has helped improve punctuality rates substantially.
Another initiative has been the installation of a games room for employees to use during mid-morning and lunch breaks. We’ve found that it’s a great way to motivate staff, giving them time to relax. As part of this, we’ve bought a ping pong table, a basketball hoop and a darts board. And by next week, the two table-football tables that we ordered last month will have arrived. Since opening the games room, staff have been using it constantly, especially the beds that we bought to allow staff to have a short nap during the day. Along similar lines, we’ve also organized a number of teambuilding excursions.
1、Why does the author list some figures in Paragraph One?
A.To prove the plans work well
B.To show employees to be more punctual
C.To present the production grows obviously
D.To prove the increase of workers’ attendance
2、What have they done to help with punctuality?
A.They’ve set personal targets
B.They’ve weakened demands on employees
C.They’ve introduced a scheme to give employees bonuses
D.They’ve recorded workers’ comi ng and leaving by a new system
3、What has been most popular in the games room?
A.A ping pong table B.A darts board
C.A basketball hoop D.A nap bed
4、As readers, who may benefit most from this article?
A.Students B.Managers
C.Teachers D.Farmers
23.(8分)When Huang Lizhi took her first class in African sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa in February, her professor asked her and her classmates what impresses them most when it comes to Africa.
Unexpectedly, Huang, 31, found that words like “poverty” and “safari” – negative words that were often associated with the continent in media reports –were the kind of terms her African classmates didn’t want to hear. Instead, they preferred to hear the question answered in this way: “Africa is the cradle of humankind” and “Africans are passionate and generous”.
A pparently, there are some misunderstandings between us. It’s true that with incidents like the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa and the emergence (出现) of pirates off the coast of Somalia hitting the news, it’s easy for us to keep forgetting that Africa has one of the world’s oldest civilizations –Egypt, born by the world’s longest river, the Nile. The proof is in the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Great Sphinx of Giza, which are both popular among tourists. And the tombs of ancient Egypt have also become endless sources for the literature and film industries.
When it comes to the natural environment of Africa, our misunderstandings are only bigger. But the truth is that instead of being extremely hot all year and covered by desert, the continent has large areas of savannas (稀树草原) where lions, giraffes and zebras live, the snowcapped Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa – and even thick forest on the island of Madagascar. These misunderstandings are one of the reasons why the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was held on Sept 3 and 4 – to understand each other better.
Indeed, only by visiting Africa herself did Huang see the convenient living conditions, the amazing natural beauty and the friendly people. In her eyes, her classmates were as hopeful about the future of their own countries as they were about Africa as a whole, and they were quick to demonstrate both their strong will and activity. “At that moment, I knew exactly what they wanted – they wanted their culture to be re spected.”

24.(8分)In the short time Steve and Zach had been inside their tent packing their tools, wind-blown flame had skipped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox.
“Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today!” Steve kept Brady on the lead and their heads down against the fire-wind. But Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. The dog was pulling at his lead trying to draw them away from the smoke, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him that they were moving away from the river.
Suddenly, Zach cried. “Zach!” Steve shouted. “Are you OK? Where are you?” Then Brady pulled Steve down a sharp slope(坡). At its base, Zach was rubbing his ankle.

Not far from them fire was touching underbrush. Several times the big dog stopped. Often he changed directions. Steve was so tired that he just wanted to rest, but Brady wouldn’t have it. On one hand, some people are in favor of getting rid of it. They think it is difficult for foreigners to understand those Chinglish signs. What’s more, we should learn standard English.
However, on the other hand, other people are against the idea. In their opinion, for one thing, Chinglish makes English more colourful. For another, Chinglish adds much pleasure to our life.
As far as I’m concerned, we should learn standard English instead of Chinglish. Only in this way can we communication with foreigners better.。
