Chengdu is a beautiful city. —— As you know, Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province situated in the center of “ the Land of Abundance”, is a beautiful city with many interesting places of historical significance, so I’d like to show you some of the tourist attractions such as The Thatched Cottage of Du Fu (who was a famous poet in Tang Dynasty), The Wu Hou Memorial Temple (which was built in commemoration of Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang ) and The Dujiangyan Dam (an ancient water irrigation project constructed on the Minjiang River).

(3) Function of Loose sentence:
There was a woman who was beautiful, who started with all the advantages, yet she had no luck. She married for love, an the love turned to dust. There were a boy and two little girls. They lived in a pleasant house, with a garden, and they had discreet servants.
(3) A sentence can be expanded by adding to it an apposition. e.g. Chengdu is a beautiful city. —— As you know, Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province situated in the center of “ the Land of Abundance”, is a beautiful city with many interesting places of historical significance.

(2)a parenthesis 插入语 ; (3)an apposition 同位语;
(4)a compound /compound sentence, thus making it a complex one;
(1) A sentence can be expanded by adding to it a modifier. e.g. Chengdu is a beautiful city. — Chengdu is a beautiful city with many interesting places of historical significance.

4. Sentence Expansion
For the sake of writing good English, a short and simple sentence sometimes can be expanded by adding to it

Loose sentence & periodic sentence ➢ He was sitting before the fire in a large

➢ A loose sentence (松散句) is one that may be brought to a grammatical close before the end is reached.
➢ A periodic sentence (圆周句) is one that is not grammatically complete until the end is reached.

(5) Combination of Periodic sentence and loose sentence
In the evening, I suspected that there must be someone hiding somewhere. I searched every corner carefully, but found nobody. So I closed the door and moved the table against the door in order to prevent any misfortune. I. Sentences Types
1. Loose sentence & Periodic sentence
As Peter and Carl walk to school, Peter’s nice dog, Bonnie, follows them, walking at Peter’s heels until she turns back when they reach the butcher’s shop. Now, if she doesn’t find her friends, she will go home.

(4) Function of Periodic sentence

2. The Short and Long Sentences
(1) Using short sentences Short sentences can often be very powerful, emphatic
and suitable for the presentation of important facts and ideas. e. g. A. Nice guys finish last. / Love conquers all. / War is hell. B. Our city is on the threshold of a great era. Of this we can be sure. But in order to fulfill the promise of the future, we must be willing to work—and to spend. Though easy to read, too many short sentences exhaust the reader. They sounds childish.
