Buster Keaton was born on October 4, 1895 in Piqua, Kansas, to Joe and Myra Keaton. At six months, he fell down a flight of stairs. Reaching the floor unhurt, he was picked up by magician Harry Houdini who said the kid was a real buster. The word “buster” means an unusually strong child. From then on, his parents and the world knew him as Buster Keaton. By the age of three, Keaton had joined the family's vaudeville (杂耍) act. It was this training in vaudeville that prepared him for the fast-paced comedy of the silent movies.
In 1917, Keaton moved to Hollywood, where he met another former vaudevillian. Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, a famous c omic actor of the time, took Keaton on and showed
him the ropes of the movie industry. Keaton regarded Arbuckle as one of his closest friends and his greatest influence. With his remarkable acrobatic (杂技般的) acts, the thin Keaton was a perfect partner for Arbuckle. Within a few years, Keaton became an increasingly popular comic star.
Most of Keaton's famous movies were made during the 1920s. Writing, directing, and starring in these films, Keaton created a crazy funny world. He often found himself in the same difficult situations as Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd, but he always kept a sense of stillness throughout, without showing joy, anger, or sadness at all. No matter how lost or unlucky Keaton seemed to be, he was never one to be pitied. The New York Times said of him, “In a film world that exaggerated everything, ... he remained expressionless and serious, his stone face holding back all emotion.”
Though he acted in a number of films in the 1930s, Keaton began to lose his popularity with audiences, partly because of the appearance of the films with sound. It was not until the 1950s that the public liking for Keaton's work returned. The great skills needed to complete his heart-stopping acts amazed people who had become used to simple, flat physical comedy and he was considered one of the greatest comic actors of the silent age.
24. How did Keaton get his first name?
A. From his excellent skills.
B. From his parents' love for him.
C. From a story about a magician.
D. From a harmless fall accident.
25. What did Arbuckle mean to Keaton?
A. He was a big fan of Keaton.
B. He acted as Keaton's guide to the movies.
C. He was one of Keaton's main competitors.
D. He became Keaton's vaudeville instructor.
26. What made Keaton unusual according to paragraph 3?
A. His care about society.
B. His understanding of films.
C. His unemotional coolness.
D. His heart-warming stories.
27. What excited people's interest in Keaton's films again?
A. His great acrobatic skills.
B. The rise of physical comedy.
C. The influence of silent movies.
D. His achievements in films with sound.

As Geoffrey Hinton, widely seen as the godfather of artificial intelligence, warns about growing dangers from how it is developing, businesses are scrambling to see how they can use the technology to their advantage.
Recently, the hot topic is how to employ ChatGPT style technology across their businesses as quickly as possible. A boss looked at his computer, entered the transcript of a customer complaint call, and asked ChatGPT to respond to it based on set of rules. In about a minute it came up with a very credible answer, which was 85% accurate but only cost 1% of the cost of employing staff. The good news for all is the pure enhancement to productivity.
Technology has improved the quality of life. A lot of innovation has made our entertainment time more enjoyable. But the real shock has been that these technologies are usable in a commercial context, not just for “low-cognitive, repetitive” tasks, i. e. robotic-tasks likely to be automated.
The surprise has been how employable the technology is to highly creative, high-value work. Specifically, creating an image, or music, or coding a programme can be achieved in seconds rather than weeks of briefing and refining. So the good news is that rapid employment of this technology could solve the longstanding productivity crisis. The bad news is that it could occur so rapidly as to overtake workers’ ability to adapt in time, creating social crisis. Could we face in call centers and creative studios in the 2020s, the equivalent of what happened in the coal mines in the 1980s?
Some individuals have started to suggest that states should provide a basic income due to the possibility of AI leading to job loss. The response of tech enthusiasts is that “You won’t be replaced by an AI, but you might be replaced by someone who knows how to use AI”. But they used to say that’s why everybody should learn how to code. That might not be such wise career advice any more.
28. What do we learn about ChatGPT?
A. I t improves customers’ satisfaction.
B. It enhances productivity and reduces cost.
C. It perfects customers’ ability to summarize.
D. It revolutionizes the business with accuracy.
29. How has technology influenced individuals?
A. By enriching leisure time.
B. By increasing dependence.
C. By simplifying people’s work.
D. By reshaping entertainment forms.
30. What does the underlined word “equivalent” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Alternative.
B. Opposite.
C. Similarity.
D. Reference.
31. What is the author s attitude towards the application of AI?
A. Intolerant.
B. Favorable.
C. Indifferent.
D. Objective.

Studies have been done on the connection between humor and genes. The most common ones involved researchers observing the same twins and looking at how genes affect their sense of humor. There was a study with 390 adult twins who were asked to rate 48 cartoons of different humor varieties based on how funny they found them. The conclusion was that environmental influences played a more important role in what the twins found funny than genetics.
However, there is more to be said about this topic. A recent study proved a clear connection between genetics and emotions like laughter. This study tested 336 adults by showing them funny clips from movies and humorous comics. Researchers then examined the gene and positive emotional expressions, which they referred to as laughing and smiling. And even though the research has collected evidence on how there can be a connection between laughing and smiling behaviors and genes, we still need more similar studies before considering the results as a fact.
While genetics play an important role in the formation of many character traits, our sense of humor is too complex to be attributed to one factor. Moreover, your sense of humor can change throughout your whole life, which is why simplifying humor and basing it only on genetics isn’t reliable.
When we’re young, we learn to talk and do regular activities by observing people and things around us. While growing up, you are exposed to jokes that people around you make and find funny. You will pick up behavioral signs and develop your sense of humor based on all of that. It’s not a surprise that your sense of humor is based on the sense of humor of the people you grew up with, rather than on the genes of your ancestors.
Our sense of humor is a subjective field that depends on social factors, such as the influence of your family and friends, social circle, upbringing in a particular country and
culture, etc. For that reaso n, it doesn’t mean that you will be humorous just because your parents or grandparents are funny.
32. What was found in the study about twins?
A. Humor wasn’t related to genes.
B. Environment mattered more than genes in humor.
C. The twins’ humor was mainl y affected by genes.
D. The twins rated similarly about cartoons.
33. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. More research is needed to confirm the recent study result.
B. There is no connection between genes and positive emotions.
C. The recent study tested 336 adult twins by showing them funny clips.
D. The research proved the connection between laughing behaviors and smiling behaviors.
34. Which of the following may the author probably agree with?
A. The sense of humor is just decided by one factor.
B. The sense of humor can’t change once developed.
C. The sense of humor can be obtained by observing and following others.
D. The sense of humor is a relatively simple one of people’s all character traits.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Can you be born humorous?
B. Is humor a necessity?
C. Can you develop your humor?
D. Is being humorous beneficial?
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分;满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项。
Having a good sense of humor makes you more enjoyable to be around. 36 . Here’s how you can develop your sense of humor.
●Surround Yourself with Humor
You learn more effectively when you fully expose yourself to a subject. Similarly, you can improve your sense of humor by surrounding yourself with humor. Watch standup comedians. Listen to programs that amuse you. Read humorous books. 37 .
●Learn What Amuses You
38 . We amuse our friends by praising a change they made. However, when it comes to being funny, don’t change your sense of humor to amuse other people. Instead, start with what amuses you. Then, if you think the other person will also be amused with it, share it with them.
●Think About Timing and Audience
You don’t have to be funny all the time, so don’t expect that of yourself. When you catch yourself trying to be funny, slow down. Simply speak slower so you’re not as likely to stop and repeat yourself. Try speaking at 60-70 % of your usual rate. 39 .
●40
You don’t need to seize every single opportunity to be funny. If you’re in the middle of a bad joke, just end it. “You know what, now that I’m telling it, it’s not as funny as it sounded in my head,” can be a bit of an awkward end and hurt your pride a little bit, but it saves everyone time and patience. In the long run, they’ll respect your taste.
A. Be Creative, Not Silly

C. There’s a lot of fun out there
D. You might also do better at work
E. Know When to Pull the Plug on Yourself
F. You can also try your hand in the real world

文。
In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement (实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
