13、How do students spend their spare time after finishing their homework? Watch TV, play computer games, or go outsi de to relax? Here’s a good example.
Tim and Kerry Meek are both teachers. They live in the UK with their two daughters, 11-year-old Amy and 9-year-old Ella. Recently, the Meek family has become the focus of the UK after they completed 100 different outdoor activities in one year.
Tim and Kerry didn’t want their children to spend all their free time in front of the TV and become “couch tomatoes”. So about one year ago, the Meeks decided that watching TV and playing computer games were not permitted. Instead, they set 100 tasks for the two girls to do outside. Although Mr and Mrs Meek are not outdoor activity fans, they took part in all the activities to encourage their daughters.
Every holiday and weekend, whether it’s sunny, rainy or snowy, the Meeks would s et off to try the activities on their list, including hiking, sailing, climbing and skiing. The two little girls not only had a wonderful time, but also learned a lot of skills from the activities. They were even able to stand up in front of their school t o give a talk for charity. “Our friends spend a lot of their free time doing things which are harmful to their health. Luckily, we’ve had the chance to experience something different.” Amy and Ella also helped their parents to draw up a new list of challen ges for the next 12 months. 1.Why did the Meeks become the focus of attention in the UK?

14、Are you shy?If you are,you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people fell shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now,scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often bullied(欺负)by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people,it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversations. And don’t forget-if you are shy,you are not the only one.

19、I'm a wonderful teenager
I am a 15-year-old student in junior Grade 3. Though I am occupied with my study, I would like to spend time on my hobbies, such as playing the piano, surfing the Internet.
One of my favorite hobbies is reading. Reading has been in my life for many years, since I began to learn characters. It can not only kill the time, but also, more important, help improve my reading ability. When reading, I can learn a lot. By reading Shakespear's works, I know what Hamlet looks like. Reading Socrates, I can see how great ancient Greek philosophers are. Reading Lu Xun, I come back to the old time of China.
I am sure to continue reading, so I can lead a colourful life.。
