Ten-year-old Riley Christensen and her mother, Lynn, were looking at models and prices of bikes on the Internet. “Let’s pick one out for Dad’s birthday,” Lyn n suggested to her daughter. Suddenly, a bike shop in their town with a video linking Project Mobility caught Riley’s eyes. She clicked it out of curiosity, which told how Bike Rack owner Hal Honeyman had created an organization to provide special bicycles to people with disabilities(残疾). It showed the happy faces of those who were riding them —accident victims, injured soldiers, and children with disabilities, including Hal’s own son, who had been born with disease.
“I’m going to buy a bike for one of those kids,” Riley told her mother. Two days later, she showed her mother a letter asking for donations. “I think it’s amazing for a guy to make bikes for kids who can’t walk,” the letter said. “I saw how happy a boy was when he got one. I’m writing to ask f or your help.”
Lynn was impressed by her daughter’s effort, but doubts quickly emerged. The cost of just one of those special bikes was as high as $4,000. So she advised her daughter to ask their relatives and friends for help. Within three days, checks and cash began arriving. Then word got around about Riley’s campaign, and as Christmas approached, more and more donations arrived. Riley raised more than $12,000 in the end.
On Christmas Eve, Riley wore a Santa hat and delivered the bicycles to three lucky kids. “This is the best Christmas I ever had,” said Riley. She is determined to keep her campaign going every holiday season. “I want kids to feel the wind in their faces,” she says.

Everyone needs entertainment to take his or her mind away from the boring chores of everyday life. Entertainment can be in the form of music, movies, plays and various other activities. The most common form of entertainment is movies, which are watched by people of all ages.
Movies are entertaining, but some movies can have a negative effect on their audience. Little children may watch animated movies(动画片) played by their favorite superheroes, who do supernatural things, or by some other characters they admire, like Mickey Mouse, who does all sorts of things that are not possible in real life. These movies can lead children into thinking that they too can do all these things.
Many young people like watching action movies, and the violence in these movies also has an effect on their minds. It makes them think more about violence and extremism, and may lead them into committing crimes and other acts that can hurt others. These young people may watch their favorite actors do other things that are disliked in society. Their favorite actors and characters may take drugs and smoke cigarettes in their movies, which negatively influences the young audience. They may begin smoking too, or they may think that smoking is “cool” or it will raise their s ocial status.
Although some movies have a negative effect on their audience, others may have a positive effect too. There are many educational movies that are informative. These movies are very few in number compared to other movies that are not informative. These educational movies are not liked by young audience, so generally speaking movies have a bad influence on young people.

I was born and raised in Chicago. I am one of thirteen children who were raised by a single mom after my father passed away. As a child, I used sports and studying as the way to struggle against the dangers and temptations (诱惑) of urban life. I left home at an early age to attend school at Lake Forest Academy and then attended college.
Being away from home was difficult. Growing up on the streets was lonely and hurtful. I was able to enjoy being around different, educated people and learned a great deal about life from them.
The reason I wrote Emotional Core Therapy is that I have seen too much needless suffering and wanted to do something about it. Writing a book was the best way that I can let the world know that feelings of anxiety, depression, and anger are treatable. Many humans have suffered because they were not taught how to properly love themselves. My book works from the reader’s perspective and world view.
My book uses five easy steps to treat emotional issues and emphasizes the root cause of emotional or psychic problems. My book teaches people how to identify (鉴别) and release those
feelings.
The book will benefit anyone as long as they put in the time and effort to change their relationships. Feelings of fear and sadness are going to enter our lives, whether we like them or not. Why not be prepared? I use rain, thunderstorms, and hurricanes to describe spiritual pain. We can never really know when bad weather hits. Why not carry an umbrella? Why not know where the nearest shelter is located?
7. The first two paragraphs mainly tell us that .
A. the author was well educated at a young age
B. the author likes reading books and doing sports
C. the author likes to get on with educated people
D. the author lived a difficult life at a young age
8. Why did the author decide to write Emotional Core Therapy?
A. He wanted to prevent himself from being hurt.
B. He wanted to teach people how to love themselves.
C. He wanted to become famous through writing this book.
D. He wanted to remind people of the influence of bad feelings.
9. The questions in the last paragraph suggest that .
A. everybody should buy a book of such kind
B. relationships play a key role in our happiness
C. it’s necessary to read Emotional Core Therapy
D. it’s helpful for us to experience spiritual pain
10. What does the author intend to talk about in this text?
A. His new-published book.
B. His emotional problem.
C. His own experience.
D. His attitude towards his life.

How to develop courage by overcoming daily fears
Sometimes when thinking of courage, we think it only applies to rare and uncommon situations. Yet our ordinary lives can also be full of courage, even if we are not facing the end of a gun, a wild animal or a dangerous criminal. Courage doesn’t just mean doing heroic (英雄的) acts.
11 In fact, where there is fear on a daily basis, there are opportunities for you to show your courage. Here are some suggestions to develop courage by overcoming daily fears.
Recognize your fears.
By realizing that you’re fearful, you’re more likely to get to the bottom of what your fear is.
12 You might come to understand that you’re afraid of failing or taking chances. You may be fearful simply because you don’t have confidence in yourself. The key is not to dwell on your fear, but rather to understand what it is that you’re worried about.
Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen.
If you’re hesitant to take action, ask yourself this: What’s the worst that can happen? Then prepare to accept it. Then proceed to improve on the worst. Is failure the worst thing that can happen? No, absolutely not. 13 Doing nothing is actually the worst thing that can happen. When you take no action, you are assured of getting nowhere.
Take action.
Courage is cultivated through taking action. 14 You need to act to overcome your fear. Your action may put you in discomfort, but you have to just do it. And your action can prevent you from being stuck.
15
To build up your confidence, you need to do the same thing over and over again. Soon you will discover that less courage is needed because you have already gained mastery. You are able to move decisively forward.
A. Share your fears with others.
B. Practice, practice, and practice.
C. So you are already in a comfort zone.
D. You cannot think courage comes just in one day.
E. Each undesired result is just one more step towards your goal.
F. Find out what is truly holding you back.
G. You needn’t wait for an emergency to occur to develop courage.
