In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They declare that if more people rode bicycles to work, there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown part of the city and so less dirty air from car engines.
For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to draw special lanes for bicycles only on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.
But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea-they say it will slow the traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don’t like the idea-they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business.
The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park-the largest place of open ground in New York-is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.

B. but Bike for a Better City is still not satisfied

An apple a day really could keep the doctor away, as long as you don’t throw away the peel.
The particular chemical element behind the apple skin’s waxy(蜡质的) shine is called ursolic acid(熊果素), which helps build human muscles and maintain a healthy weight. Besides, it also keeps cholesterol(胆固醇) and blood sugar under control, meaning an apple a day could do wonders for all-round health.
Researcher Christopher Adams said, “Ursolic acid is an interesting natural compound. It is part of normal diet as well as a component of apple peels.”
The importance of apple peels was discovered by Dr Adams, a U.S. expert. He said, “Muscle wasting is a frequent companion of illness and ageing. It makes patients’ hospital stay last
longer, delays recoveries and in some cases prevents people from going back home. It isn’t well understood and there’s no medicine for it.”
In order to improve the situation, Dr Adams from the University of Iowa studied the genetic changes that occur when muscles waste.
The researcher then added small amounts of the compound to a normal diet of mice and observed their changes in health. It was found that the creatures’ muscles got stronger and their control force became bigger.
The benefits didn’t end there. The mice fed the apple peel chemical had lower levels of cholesterol and other blood fats blamed for damaging the heart, and had around a third less body fat.
It is particularly concerned in apple peels. Dr Adams said, “We know that if you eat a balanced diet like mom told us to eat, you can get this material. People who eat junk food don’t get this.”
He added, “The goal is to establish whether apple peel is as good for humans as it is for mice and work out how many apples we might need to help make muscles strong and keep a healthy weight.”
50. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Muscle wasting may lead people to death.
B. It is clear why muscle wasting can delay patients’ recoveries.
C. The research was carried on a human being.
D. Apple peel can make patients stay in hospital longer.

Neighbors play an important role in our lives. Their lifestyle, friends, and social habits can have a strong influence on our lives. So it’s a good idea to get along well with neighbors and build a better relationship that will last for many years to come. But how should you get along with your neighbors?
When you hear of a special need you can meet, do it, such as sitting with a sick child while your neighbor goes to work or taking an elderly parent to a doctor’s appointment when their car won’t start.
If you hear that someone close by is ill, has had an accident, or is out of work, give him a hot meal or a fresh dessert. Your kindness will add a special feeling during a difficult time. If your neighbor is cutting down a tree or building a doghouse, offer helping hands to him/her.
There is no better way to build relationship. Besides, you never know when the favor might be returned.
Exchange holiday cards, gifts or traditions. Invite your neighbors over for a cup of coffee or lunch. A backyard barbecue can be a great way to share food and fun. If they’ve watched your kids grow up or been concerned about your family events, they may want to share these special events.
Plan a party. Invite all your neighbors to your party. Planning and carrying out the activity helps everyone to know and understand each other.
Your neighbors are like your family in many ways since you have to live with them, or near them, for a long time. Appreciate their strong points and ignore weak points, and everyone will get along well.
54. According to the passage, to build a good relationship with your neighbors, you should_____.
A. do housework for them when they are sick

D. Help your neighbors make improvements on their weak points

Finding ways to diagnose cancer earlier could greatly improve the chances of survival for many patients. One way to do this is to look for specific proteins secreted(分泌) by cancer cells, which circulate in the bloodstream. However, the quantity of these biomarkers(生物标志物) is so low that detecting them has proven difficult. A new technology developed at MIT may help to make biomarker detection much easier. The researchers, led by Sangeeta Bhatia, have developed nanoparticles that can home to a tumor(肿瘤) and interact with cancer proteins to produce thousands of biomarkers, which can then be easily detected in the patient's urine(尿液).
This biomarker amplification(放大,详述) system could also be used to monitor disease progression and track how tumors respond to treatment, says Bhatia, the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT.
"There's a desperate search for biomarkers, for early detection or disease prognosis, or looking at how the body responds to treatment," says Bhatia, who is also a member of MIT's
David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. She adds that the search has been complicated because genomic studies have revealed that many cancers, such as breast cancer, are actually groups of several diseases with different genetic signatures.
The MIT team, working with researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, described the new technology in a paper appearing in Nature Biotechnology on Dec. 16. Lead author of the paper is Gabriel Kwong, a postdoc in MIT's Institute for Medical Engineering and Science and the Koch Institute.
58. The result of the new technology developed at MIT can_____.
A. improve the chances of survival for many patients
B. help examine the body’s response to treatment
C. simplify the complicated disease
D. make more profits by curing the patients
59. Why detecting the specific protein is difficult?
A. Because it circulates in the bloodstream too fast.
B. Because it runs out of body through urine.
C. Because the quantity of it is very low.
D. Because there are more than one kinds in the body.
60. From what Bhatia said we can know that_____.
A. people have no chance to defeat the cancer
B. she doesn’t think the new technology will help a lot
C. breast cancer is the most serious cancer
D. people have tried a lot to cure the cancer

Psychology(心理学)tells us that many people hate to take risks. But it is good for us to take risks, especially when the risk is to achieve a desired result. In that way, we become stronger and braver.
Our human nature should be to take risks, but some people just sit and wish they didn’t have the fear to move on. This is because of one or two failures in their lives. Please step out and don’t let the past hold you back from living life to the fullest. Move forward and move on!
In studying the psychology of taking risks, we find that human nature provides us with the desire to experiment and take chances.
Risk taking is a great benefit that allowed our ancestors(祖先) to become stronger and stronger day by day. By taking risks they fought off enemies and discovered new land. This attitude has become a part of our modern culture. Riding a roller coaster is a common risk taking activity that even the average person seems to enjoy although they have the understanding that it is dangerous.
Getting in a car each day is a risk. Getting out of bed is a risk. We need to take risks so that we can finish many things. Astronauts take risks when they get inside a rocket; however, the things they achieve are great. Businessmen take a risk when they buy parts of a company. However, without doing that, they could not make more money.
We need to take risks so that we can gain something. It is impossible to move forward in life,
